I went into the local music store expecting to buy a Taylor 114 or Taylor 214 also. I picked up the 214 and it just wasn't the guitar for me. I picked up a fender 140 c e and it had no Bass to it at all hardly. Didn't like some of the other readers here I stumbled across another guitar thinking it was a fender and it sounded beautiful. To my surprise it was a Yamaha fgx800c. Never considered buying a Yamaha but it sounded as deep and Rich as I could have wanted. Just goes to show you when you listen with your ears and not with the name brand and price tag you get the same response many of the reviewers here got. You will need to add another strap button to the neck because it only comes with one. For the money this is Bar None the best guitar I think that is made. I went out of my way to write this review so somebody out there searching for a good acoustic guitar who leads worship at church as I do and in youth groups would not miss out on this deal!AndrewSGI
Bought a Fender guitar to practice with an acoustic guitar (I own 5 guitars total classical, electric, and travel guitars). The bottom bridge came unglued after ten days of taking it home, so I wanted something different and better built. I wanted to stay in the $800 or less budget, so I headed to Guitar Center; I played with over 30 guitars for over two hours (including Taylors and the mini travel Martin's). I stumbled on this Yamaha which had the most clear rich sound! I was very impressed with the quality of the electronics; particularly the tuner! I took it home and plugged it up to my amp, and once again, I was very impressed with the guitar's capabilities! I highly recommend this guitar even when it never crossed my mind to own a Yamaha.Tavo
I'm backing up a woman who writes, plays a Taylor, and sings like an angel. We play at some venues that are crowded with lots of other musicians running around on and back stage. I had been playing a $3600 Martin HD-18V and was somewhat nervous about it getting damaged or stepped on. So I set out to find reasonably priced guitar with good sound. I hit all the local music stores in the Atlanta area and played just about everything on the market for under $1000. NOTHING came close to the Yamaha FSX800 and FGX800 series as far as consistency, quality, playability, or PRICE. To get a Martin or Taylor that sounded and played this good, one would have to spend at least 700, and more like $1000 to get a comparable guitar. One that that really stood out to me as I spent 2 days of test driving acoustics all over Atlanta was the incredible consistency in the Yamaha guitars. Even in their models that were under $200. So with the intention of having a nice sounding a playable "insurance policy" substitute for my Martin, I ended up with a great sounding guitar that I really enjoy. And, if it were to be stolen or demolished, I now know that I could get a replacement for it that would be as good. While it's not quite the guitar that my expensive Martin is, it really lacks nothing. It's sounds good and plays good. It's fun to play and is incredibly loud. The electronics (when plugged in) actually sounds as good or better than my music partners $2K Taylor. Strongly recommend anyone looking for a good quality acoustic guitar to check out Yamaha. I bought this guitar to check out a budget friendly offering from Yamaha. I have to say I was not disappointed! Excellent tone and volume, the top really resonates. The guitar was really well setup right out of the box. It needed about 3/4 of a clockwise truss rod adjustment, no prob. Other than that it didn't need any fret dressing whatsoever. That's really impressive for a Chinese guitar. Heck even one of my Mexican Martins needed fret dressing out of the box! Also intonation was spot on and this also is important in your guitar. Very impressed with this guitar, intermediate/advanced feel but priced at a beginner budget. You won't regret picking one up, I assure you!Big Bone Murphy
There is a point of quality when an instrument reaches when it stops being seen as "better or worse" but rather just a different flavor. This Yamaha has reached that point. You can play it alongside a guitar costing 5x more and it stands up well. Yamaha is also one of those rare companies with a long history of top quality across all kinds of products, and guitars are an area Yamaha knows well. This is just a beautiful guitar through and throughout. You can get beautiful uncompromisingly great studio recordings with this guitar. Hitting the low strings hard with strumming gives a nice deep and rich tone. Also, the hardware / tuners are nice.Scott
I've owned many acoustics over the years, MANY, and this Yamaha is one of the best sounding I've ever owned. Went to GC just to check out a few lower end acoustics to pick up for jamming on, and tried almost every one in the room. Picked this one up last just before I was ready to leave, and immediately was blown away by the sound and playability, brought a couple friends to listen and tell me which one they thought sounded the best, and hands down this won over all of them. It has the tone and warmth of a Martin D34, which I have owned a few, and it plays like a dream. The neck is so sliky smooth, easy to fly up and down with no effort. It has amazing sustain and beautiful tone, I fell in love with it and just couldn't put it down. I didn't expect a guitar of this price range to sound as good as it does, got it home and I couldn't put it down. Played for 4 hours straight, and even after trying to put it down to go to bed at 1am I found myself playing a for a few more minutes before I could actually go to sleep. Love this Yamaha more than any guitar I've bought in the last decade. The best thing about it is, It gave me the desire to pick up playing guitar again, after hardly touching any of my other guitars for almost a year it's the one I want to play more than all of them. After suffering a permanent back injury I could no longer play my elictric guitar as it was too heavy or my acoustic electric guitar because it felt like it was twice it's normal size because I could no longer find a comfortable position for myself to play it. I bought a keyboard thinking that I could still play music. Afterv two weeks of playing around with the keyboard I gave up pllaying. Then I saw on the internet one night an advertisement for a 3/4 size Yamaha acoustic electric guitar guitar with a slimline bosy which looked like a nice guitar so I checked out males and females playing it and sounded very nice so I bought one. Man am I'm so glad I did. I got the sunburst like this one on sale. I was excited as l took it out of the box and went straight to my mancave and started playing it. It was perfecty in tune and for a guitar of this size it's got such a beautiful tone playing ACOUSTIC. So I plugged it in and it's as good as it sounded on YouTube. As an 67 yesr old man who started playing guitar when I was 16 years old, this is a beauty. I recommend this guitar to beginners, anyone with small hands and even people who want a good guitar to take with them without taking up much space in your car. Yep, it's a beaty.Deano
I typically play single cut electric guitars and I think the APX600 is an incredible transition to acoustic guitar. I love the neck profile and weight. Nato wood must be very strong for its density because it has a slim profile akin to a mahogany neck, but it's light like a maple neck. I haven't used the electronics much yet (personally didn't buy it for the preamp at all) but I've been pleased with the acoustic tones thus far. I would highly recommend a setup from Sweetwater as well because this is already a great price and a professional setup virtually eliminates the woes of fighting a "cheap" instrument. Lastly, thank you so much to Michael DiGiorgio for making every transaction seamless! P.S. 4.5 rather than 5 because I did not choose to upgrade to an aftermarket nut/saddle with my setup and I think that's probably the only way to get this beauty to a 5/5 tone/playability wise. I'm not as concerned with plastic versus bone but I think a blank nut/saddle would give the luthiers more to work with. I think for the price Yamaha and Sweetwater are both 5/5 here, but I wanted to objectively review the guitar.
The only thing I'm not entirely happy with is the action. It's just a little too high. Other than that, I love it. It's a very nice looking acoustic for the money. It stays in tune extremely well and I was shocked at how full the sound was even with such a thin body. Sounds even better plugged in. The thinner body is super comfortable to handle and hold. It makes the transition from electric to acoustic very easy. The built in tuner is one of my favorite features. It works great and seems to be as accurate as any other tuner I've ever used. Overall, I would recommend this acoustic to anyone on a budget looking for a great sounding and feeling acoustic who doesn't mind the action a little on the higher side. (Side Note – I might be too critical on the action since I'm used to my electrics set up for such low action.)

Overall: So, I have owned this guitar for several months now. It is without a doubt a very good sounding guitar, it's up there with my Gibson's and Martins. Strumming or finger picking it just sounds amazing. I did not love the string spacing, so I replaced the nut with a bit wider spacing for my style of playing. The whole point about me taking the plunge on this guitar was that it was all solid woods, ebony fingerboard and bridge, and one of Yamahas absolute best acoustics available. I have no regrets buying this guitar at all. My friends are amazed at the beauty and sound of this very well-built guitar. The electronics do a good job plugged into the PA for playing live, and it will amaze you how good it sounds unplugged all by itself. I never thought I would buy anything but Martin or Gibson's…. this changed my mind completely. if you're thinking about one of these just buy one!! My honest opinion is the price will go up on these as the solid woods and craftsmanship are stunning.Michael
I’ve had my A3M for three years now. I still look at mahogany wood grain in awe. This guitar has a nice rounded tone that can compete with Taylor and Martin guitars made from mahogany. Plugged into an acoustic amp sounds even better. I notice the price point has increased $100 (not sure of due to inflation) which shows that it is a respected instrument. I spent months spinning around for a acoustic guitar and I was truly pleased with the Yamaha A3M. I think it can keep up with Martin and Taylor on stage as a reliable gig machine.bryan nuñez
I dropped into GC to grab some strings and ended up buying this guitar. It's just that good. The build quality is excellent, the finish is flawless, the tuners are high ratio (and feel like butter), and the frets are all leveled and polished with no sharp ends. The neck is fairly thin and narrow, and is very playable and comfortable. Sound-wise it has a clear open voice with a tight, well-defined bottom. I also have a Taylor 814CE and the two guitars sound VERY similar with the difference being that the Taylor sounds a tad more full, but just a tad. If the Taylor sound is something that appeals to you, then you will be pleased with this Yamaha. In closing, the one draw-back I found was that there was a TON of relief in the neck. Fortunately the truss rod is easily accessible (a 4mm hex fits perfectly) and after a few tweaks the playability was top-notch. For a budget guitar, Yamaha has knocked it out of the park.Jim D

I was looking to add an Acoustic-Electric with a cutaway to my collection and already had an FG800. So I was a huge fan of the quality and value of Yamaha's 800 series. I played the FSX800C at Guitar Center…kept playing it… and playing it…fell in love with it… took it home! It is extremely comfortable to play, both the neck and body size, and has a nice sounding pick-up system which I run through a Fishman Loud Box Mini. I am a keyboard player and a band leader in the church, however, I am a fairly advanced guitar player. Currently own a Kawai, Martin LX1E and Aklot guitars. I was looking for an acoustic electric guitar with an easy action, not bulky, not heavy and fun to play with. I went to few GC and Sam Ash shops in my area to try and compare guitars. I was sold on Guild, GS Mini and Yamaha CFS1M. Then one day, I come across this guitar that was set up and sounded right to my ear. Overall: So, I have owned this guitar for several months now. It is without a doubt a very good sounding guitar, it's up there with my Gibson's and Martins. Strumming or finger picking it just sounds amazing. I did not love the string spacing, so I replaced the nut with a bit wider spacing for my style of playing. The whole point about me taking the plunge on this guitar was that it was all solid woods, ebony fingerboard and bridge, and one of Yamahas absolute best acoustics available. I have no regrets buying this guitar at all. My friends are amazed at the beauty and sound of this very well-built guitar. The electronics do a good job plugged into the PA for playing live, and it will amaze you how good it sounds unplugged all by itself. I never thought I would buy anything but Martin or Gibson's…. this changed my mind completely. if you're thinking about one of these just buy one!! My honest opinion is the price will go up on these as the solid woods and craftsmanship are stunning.Michael
I’ve had my A3M for three years now. I still look at mahogany wood grain in awe. This guitar has a nice rounded tone that can compete with Taylor and Martin guitars made from mahogany. Plugged into an acoustic amp sounds even better. I notice the price point has increased $100 (not sure of due to inflation) which shows that it is a respected instrument. I spent months spinning around for a acoustic guitar and I was truly pleased with the Yamaha A3M. I think it can keep up with Martin and Taylor on stage as a reliable gig machine.bryan nuñez
I dropped into GC to grab some strings and ended up buying this guitar. It's just that good. The build quality is excellent, the finish is flawless, the tuners are high ratio (and feel like butter), and the frets are all leveled and polished with no sharp ends. The neck is fairly thin and narrow, and is very playable and comfortable. Sound-wise it has a clear open voice with a tight, well-defined bottom. I also have a Taylor 814CE and the two guitars sound VERY similar with the difference being that the Taylor sounds a tad more full, but just a tad. If the Taylor sound is something that appeals to you, then you will be pleased with this Yamaha. In closing, the one draw-back I found was that there was a TON of relief in the neck. Fortunately the truss rod is easily accessible (a 4mm hex fits perfectly) and after a few tweaks the playability was top-notch. For a budget guitar, Yamaha has knocked it out of the park.Jim D

It's exactly what you expect. Not quite a classic guitar but will get the job done. I was thinking the smaller neck would be easier to transition to from electric but I'm thinking it may be a little too narrow for me now. I guess I'm use to the feel of a real classical guitar neck and with nylon strings this neck feels too small. Not the manufacturer's fault, the guitar is exactly as described. I could see this being good for someone who's never played a classical guitar though. I bought this guitar on a SDOD special because I wanted a nylon string guitar to play when my fingers get too sore from my steel string. The construction is typical Yamaha quality (i.e. good) and the guitar feels good. The action was a little high for my liking, but other than that this is a great inexpensive guitar. Not that loud guitar, with rich bass and very smooth treble, without the annoying sizzle of modern acoustic guitars, perfect for recordings. One thing that no one talks about this guitar is the fact of how reactive is to the pick thickness, thin picks sound drastically brighter than the heavy. Yamaha nailed it with this product I genuine believe in the future this guitar will be even more of a legend than it currently is. To get that sound and quality in American made guitars you will have to pay at least twice as much. One of my best buys for sure, I am thinking that I should buy the FS5.
I mostly play for my own amusement, but I've been at it for about 40 years. The FS5/FSX5 is a well built, nice looking, and easy playing guitar. Setup was about perfect out of the box… I might take it down just a touch at the bridge, but it was definitely in the ballpark. The neck feels comfortable, and I have had no issues with buzzes or rattles anywhere on the neck. Tuners are smooth and accurate. Out of the box, the guitar sounds very full and open, with good balance between the strings. The sustain and volume are also both pretty good. The guitar responds pretty well to dynamics, and you can dig in a bit before it starts to hit the ceiling. I've played some that have a little more dynamic range, but the FSX5 hangs. Offers pretty good clarity for fingerstyle, and I have no problem bringing out the notes I want to emphasize. I am really happy with how it sounds with strummed chords…rich, yet clear and punchy. The aesthetics are low-key, but still classy and elegant. The A.R.E aged top under the satin finish is a lovely warm orange-gold, and the simple black binding with smaller white inner bands frames it nicely. The ebony pickguard is a nice touch.. much richer look than simple plastic. The electronics get the job done. I like about an 80% mic blend, and a bit of a bass cut. I run it through a Fishman Platinum EQ and Preamp… and would recommend a good preamp to get the most out of this pickup system… you can dial in a good tone without one, but you'll get the best results with a preamp. Overall, I think Yamaha made some great decisions with this guitar. Although some of the basic fab work is done in China, the finishing touches fall under the auspices of the Japanese craftsman. They used quality materials for the build (bone nut and saddle, ebony bridge), but otherwise kept the "bling" to a minimum, and concentrated on delivering quality in the sound and feel. I have to say that, other than a similar appearance, this is an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT ANIMAL from the lower level Yamaha acoustic guitars. These are made in the Yamaha Custom Shop in Hammamatsu, Japan, and are all-solid-wood and crafted to a very high standard from the best materials. The sound is crisp, rich, and deep. I think this guitar is very close to Martin's newer D-18 (one of my all-time favorites) at HALF the price! Unfortunately these are very seldom in stock but, with GC's generous return policy, it's well worth the risk.C J Camp

For what it is – a very cheap, small, travel guitar, this is great. You'll need a strap as it doesn't sit high enough on your leg to be comfortable to play. Also – the action was high, but a bit of adjusting with a belt sander on the saddle and that came down well. The scale length is short, but plays OK – takes a bit of getting used to from my full-sized acoustics. Putting a capo on it and making chords further up the neck is tight, but OK. Sound is very good for a travel guitar of this size. This would be a great kids guitar or even for an adult beginner. I did put 11s on it – sounds a bit weaker, but is fine, and that's what I use on my other acoustics. I had a washburn rover before – this is better, though not as small, but worth the extra size, I think. I have a GS Mini, which is much better, but a good bit larger, and much more expensive. Tuner works good, haven't tried plugging it in yet. Bought this for the boat – seems pretty sturdy.Alexander
I bought this guitar because I have chronic pain and am a small lady and found that even smaller acoustic guitars are too big and bulky and unplayable. I like to play high up on the neck so wanted a cutaway and occasionally perform so having an electro-acoustic version means it ticks all the boxes. When play acoustically it does sound really tinny, there's not getting away from that. It also tends to be unbalanced toward the neck end, so I need a strap to keep it in place. But it is much more playable for practice and I am almost managing to play bar chords again. Not chance on a normal size guitar. It has a full fret board just smaller but not too small.Michelle S.
I ordered this for my pastors wife who wanted to learn a new instrument. She is tiny ( less that 5 ' tall) and a full size guitar would not fit her body type. I was shocked when the guitar came in. The photos on line do not do the finish justice. I was even more shocked when I played it. Most student guitars in this price point have horrible action. The set up on this from the factory was great. It was very easy to play and the sound was extremely good for a thin body acoustic . Then we plugged it in. I could not believe the sound quality of the electronics in this guitar. On Sunday, I pulled out after church and let the music team take turns with it. Everyone that played it raved about every aspect of this little guitar. The instrument also came with a quality gig bag. The material was thick, padding was good, the zippers and hardware appeared to by sturdy. Even more importantly, she loved the guitar. I bought this guitar to check out a budget friendly offering from Yamaha. I have to say I was not disappointed! Excellent tone and volume, the top really resonates. The guitar was really well setup right out of the box. It needed about 3/4 of a clockwise truss rod adjustment, no prob. Other than that it didn't need any fret dressing whatsoever. That's really impressive for a Chinese guitar. Heck even one of my Mexican Martins needed fret dressing out of the box! Also intonation was spot on and this also is important in your guitar. Very impressed with this guitar, intermediate/advanced feel but priced at a beginner budget. You won't regret picking one up, I assure you!Big Bone Murphy
There is a point of quality when an instrument reaches when it stops being seen as "better or worse" but rather just a different flavor. This Yamaha has reached that point. You can play it alongside a guitar costing 5x more and it stands up well. Yamaha is also one of those rare companies with a long history of top quality across all kinds of products, and guitars are an area Yamaha knows well. This is just a beautiful guitar through and throughout. You can get beautiful uncompromisingly great studio recordings with this guitar. Hitting the low strings hard with strumming gives a nice deep and rich tone. Also, the hardware / tuners are nice.Scott
I've owned many acoustics over the years, MANY, and this Yamaha is one of the best sounding I've ever owned. Went to GC just to check out a few lower end acoustics to pick up for jamming on, and tried almost every one in the room. Picked this one up last just before I was ready to leave, and immediately was blown away by the sound and playability, brought a couple friends to listen and tell me which one they thought sounded the best, and hands down this won over all of them. It has the tone and warmth of a Martin D34, which I have owned a few, and it plays like a dream. The neck is so sliky smooth, easy to fly up and down with no effort. It has amazing sustain and beautiful tone, I fell in love with it and just couldn't put it down. I didn't expect a guitar of this price range to sound as good as it does, got it home and I couldn't put it down. Played for 4 hours straight, and even after trying to put it down to go to bed at 1am I found myself playing a for a few more minutes before I could actually go to sleep. Love this Yamaha more than any guitar I've bought in the last decade. The best thing about it is, It gave me the desire to pick up playing guitar again, after hardly touching any of my other guitars for almost a year it's the one I want to play more than all of them. Overall: So, I have owned this guitar for several months now. It is without a doubt a very good sounding guitar, it's up there with my Gibson's and Martins. Strumming or finger picking it just sounds amazing. I did not love the string spacing, so I replaced the nut with a bit wider spacing for my style of playing. The whole point about me taking the plunge on this guitar was that it was all solid woods, ebony fingerboard and bridge, and one of Yamahas absolute best acoustics available. I have no regrets buying this guitar at all. My friends are amazed at the beauty and sound of this very well-built guitar. The electronics do a good job plugged into the PA for playing live, and it will amaze you how good it sounds unplugged all by itself. I never thought I would buy anything but Martin or Gibson's…. this changed my mind completely. if you're thinking about one of these just buy one!! My honest opinion is the price will go up on these as the solid woods and craftsmanship are stunning.Michael
I’ve had my A3M for three years now. I still look at mahogany wood grain in awe. This guitar has a nice rounded tone that can compete with Taylor and Martin guitars made from mahogany. Plugged into an acoustic amp sounds even better. I notice the price point has increased $100 (not sure of due to inflation) which shows that it is a respected instrument. I spent months spinning around for a acoustic guitar and I was truly pleased with the Yamaha A3M. I think it can keep up with Martin and Taylor on stage as a reliable gig machine.bryan nuñez
I dropped into GC to grab some strings and ended up buying this guitar. It's just that good. The build quality is excellent, the finish is flawless, the tuners are high ratio (and feel like butter), and the frets are all leveled and polished with no sharp ends. The neck is fairly thin and narrow, and is very playable and comfortable. Sound-wise it has a clear open voice with a tight, well-defined bottom. I also have a Taylor 814CE and the two guitars sound VERY similar with the difference being that the Taylor sounds a tad more full, but just a tad. If the Taylor sound is something that appeals to you, then you will be pleased with this Yamaha. In closing, the one draw-back I found was that there was a TON of relief in the neck. Fortunately the truss rod is easily accessible (a 4mm hex fits perfectly) and after a few tweaks the playability was top-notch. For a budget guitar, Yamaha has knocked it out of the park.Jim D

In You Tube in guitar forums, every review has something positive to say about this guitar well, they all saying the truth, this guitar is simply amazing. Not that loud guitar, with rich bass and very smooth treble, without the annoying sizzle of modern acoustic guitars, perfect for recordings. One thing that no one talks about this guitar is the fact of how reactive is to the pick thickness, thin picks sound drastically brighter than the heavy. Yamaha nailed it with this product I genuine believe in the future this guitar will be even more of a legend than it currently is. To get that sound and quality in American made guitars you will have to pay at least twice as much. One of my best buys for sure, I am thinking that I should buy the FS5.
I mostly play for my own amusement, but I've been at it for about 40 years. The FS5/FSX5 is a well built, nice looking, and easy playing guitar. Setup was about perfect out of the box… I might take it down just a touch at the bridge, but it was definitely in the ballpark. The neck feels comfortable, and I have had no issues with buzzes or rattles anywhere on the neck. Tuners are smooth and accurate. Out of the box, the guitar sounds very full and open, with good balance between the strings. The sustain and volume are also both pretty good. The guitar responds pretty well to dynamics, and you can dig in a bit before it starts to hit the ceiling. I've played some that have a little more dynamic range, but the FSX5 hangs. Offers pretty good clarity for fingerstyle, and I have no problem bringing out the notes I want to emphasize. I am really happy with how it sounds with strummed chords…rich, yet clear and punchy. The aesthetics are low-key, but still classy and elegant. The A.R.E aged top under the satin finish is a lovely warm orange-gold, and the simple black binding with smaller white inner bands frames it nicely. The ebony pickguard is a nice touch.. much richer look than simple plastic. The electronics get the job done. I like about an 80% mic blend, and a bit of a bass cut. I run it through a Fishman Platinum EQ and Preamp… and would recommend a good preamp to get the most out of this pickup system… you can dial in a good tone without one, but you'll get the best results with a preamp. Overall, I think Yamaha made some great decisions with this guitar. Although some of the basic fab work is done in China, the finishing touches fall under the auspices of the Japanese craftsman. They used quality materials for the build (bone nut and saddle, ebony bridge), but otherwise kept the "bling" to a minimum, and concentrated on delivering quality in the sound and feel. I have played guitar for 50 years and owned many fine instruments; I currently own four Martins. This is the first upper level Yamaha I've seen "in person" and I was curious. I have to say that, other than a similar appearance, this is an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT ANIMAL from the lower level Yamaha acoustic guitars. These are made in the Yamaha Custom Shop in Hammamatsu, Japan, and are all-solid-wood and crafted to a very high standard from the best materials. The sound is crisp, rich, and deep. I think this guitar is very close to Martin's newer D-18 (one of my all-time favorites) at HALF the price! Unfortunately these are very seldom in stock but, with GC's generous return policy, it's well worth the risk.C J Camp

The overall build quality of the guitar is very good. the quality of the wood is excellent. There are a few things I think could have been better. For example, the abalone used for the purfling/rosette is not very good quality. Some pieces are almost transparent, and it gives the inlay a kind of motley look. The fret ends are a little rough, but not terrible….easy to remedy. But the main reason I bought the guitar is for the sound….and it sounds fantastic, right out of the box! The setup is spot on. The neck is nice and comfortable, and the tuners are tight and responsive. The maple binding is a nice touch. I would recommend this guitar to others, but it might be best if you hand pick the one you want. I think the abalone inlay could have been better on a guitar of this price range. I gave the guitar 4 stars because of the abalone, but the build quality, sound, and playability deserve a solid 5 stars.britto71
After decades of playing every high end acoustic available I had finally whittled my collection down to three favorites; an expensive Ovation, Taylor and Cort Jumbo Cutaway. All acoustic-electrics. I've owned four Martins, two Guilds, Gibson, Breedlove, Takamine, Zager, Ibanez, Epiphone and countless others. I wanted to add an all solid rosewood dreadnought again but just couldn't justify the price points of the major makers these days. With a simple google search I came across the Yamaha LL16 and checked out some demos on YouTube. They sounded great online so I took a chance and bought one without playing it first. Now I can say, like so many others. that there are no disappointments with this instrument. The tone is so well balanced I was surprised. Not bottom heavy like Martins but plenty of beef there when you want to dig into it. Beautiful overtones and clear and distinct top end too. A great players guitar as well as balanced accompaniment for singers. If all the LL16's sound as good as mine then this instrument is the best value in a solid rosewood guitar on the market today IMHO. I like it so much I'm thinking about adding their mahogany and 12-string versions to round out all the acoustic sound options that appeal to me. Don't hesitate to buy one of these. It's everything they advertise and more. One thing that seemed odd was that they used hard plastic for the nut and saddle, but these are easily upgraded and don't seem to degrade the sound quality at all.MacMan
I also have an LL16 with a bigger body. Both have a very refined sound. Unsurprisingly this smaller guitar doesn't quite have the depth or volume of sound of it's larger relative but it does have a nice refined "voice" that works well with my vocals. It is also portable and easier to manage. I have chosen to play and record with these rather than more expensive big name alternatives. I like the pickup system and prefer to use an external pre-amp so this set up suits me. No complaints, only praise for the product.eddiemole2000

I was looking for a slimmer guitar, something in the $300 range and had just about decided on the Ibanez AEG20 (or 25, etc.). I had played the Yamaha APX500 at Guitar Center but it sounded and played awful and I was already somewhat enamored with the Ibanez, so I quickly put the Yamaha down. Anyways, a week or two later I headed to a much better guitar store in my neck of the woods which actually sets up all of their instruments. I picked up the Yamaha again and boy what a difference a good set-up makes! Now I had a decision to make and the Ibanez was no longer the clear winner. Both guitars are a good value for the money. Both guitars have great, thin, fast necks that are especially desirable for a new guitarist like myself. Both were able to hold a nice low action. Both had very good electronics built in. Honestly, they are very similar guitars. Why did I go with the Yamaha? Simple. When I was able to play the two properly set-up guitars right next to each other, the APX500 was the clear winner. I'm not sure how to explain it except to say that the Yamaha rang fuller and truer and had a more pleasing sustain. Strumming one, then the other, the APX500 just shined while, by comparison, the Ibanez sounded slightly dull or muted. Because I had not directly compared the Ibanez previously, I thought it sounded pretty good. But when I put the two side-by-side, I was able to pick a winner. Other thoughts? I ended up getting the APX500FM (Flamed Maple) as I thought the standard APX500 was somewhat plain, especially given how nice the Ibanez that I was previously set on looked. I think it is worth the extra cash, but that's a personal preference. As I hinted at, the electronics are quite good for the price point – better than I expected. It is a thinner guitar and so it sounds a little thinner than other larger guitars, which is to be expected. That said, it sounds a lot better than I thought it would. And when you plug it in, it really shines. The EQ allows you to shape your sound and if you have any sort of EQ or modeling on your amp, etc. then you will have a blast playing around. It is a less expensive guitar, but the components seem to be of higher quality than one might expect. At this price point, often consistency is the biggest problem, which is why you will find 10 people who love it and one who thinks it is terrible. I would always be sure, when purchasing a guitar of this level, to buy from someone/somewhere that allows easy exchanges. If you find that yours is pretty lousy – unless you were simply expecting too much from a thinner body – you probably got a lemon and it would be worth trying another one. Anyways, if you are looking for a thinner guitar, around $300 or so, you are going to have a hard time finding a better one than the APX500. There are some competitors that you may be just as happy with, but you won't find anything (that I know of) that is much better than this one. As with all guitars, a good setup is worth the trouble. All Yamaha guitars need the saddle shaved down a bit and replaced with bone. The Strings are a bit on the heavy side but once Custom Lights were put on… Perfection. You might have to have the Nut filed a bit as well. The finish is A1. The size is perfect for practice , around the house and on trips outdoors. It holds its tone forever. Besides the Saddle, Nut and pins being plastic (not bone) the only other negative would be the beefyness of the neck. I love the 1 3/4" neck but it is a little chunky to the feel. If the neck were like a Taylor… It would be Great. I played many guitars worth thousands more nad always came back to this one. I'm not a heavy strummer and love the resonance and sustain this guitar has. Everyone that came over and played it could not believe the quality and sound. It is truly remarkable. I did sell the guitar recently, thinking I would go for an all solid wood one. But I find myself now on the hunt for another LS6. Worth every penny and then some. Of all the L series, this is by far the best bang for the buck. Great Job.gorillaman
I needed a new gigging guitar, wanted something between a dreadnought and a concert size so I chose this body type, a mini jumbo. I've been previously playing Yamaha's CPX-series guitars and also NEX-bodied Takamines as my stage guitars, and the LJ16 has just a slightly bigger body . The sound of this guitar is lovely. Really balanced, no overpowering bass, nice sustain. Bright, but not too bright. Works for both strumming and fingerpicking. The Zero Impact pickup works well, actually I was quite surprised how nice it was. Not overly spiky highs and harsh mids, as long as you plug it into a nice DI or preamp. It's a passive pickup, so input impedance of your DI/pre does matter, but I bet it works perfectly with every acoustic amp out there. I can't say anything about the tuners yet, they seem alright and I have nothing to complain so far. I need to lower the action just a hair and widen the nut slots a bit, that's all. Do that with every guitar I buy. The softbag is nice too, seems sturdy. Yamaha is always a solid choice if you want quality for your money. Only complain i had was the finish, there were some blemishes. The "actual" finish/lacquer is flawless, no problem there. Just the final touch was missing and I had to do it myself, glue spots etc. I've seen cheaper guitars with better overall finish so I was a bit pissed about that. BUT, I'm not saying this is the case with every LJ guitar, I seriously doubt that. But yeah, no regrets buying this one!
The sound from this guitar is phenomenal, YouTube really doesn't do it justice. The neck is lovely and the whole guitar looks beautiful. The only downside is that the frets came quite rough. Even when adding vibrato to notes you can hear the string scratching against them. I'm sure this will be sorted easily with a fret polish though.Max C.

My first Yamaha guitar, bought boxed, expecting a solid finish but the finish around the neck is real poor at this price. Unfinished, bumpy and black paint even been pianted over the inlay to the right. On top of this the strings dont sit central to the centre hole, off by about 5mm! Apart from this Im having tons of fun playing it and just couldnt be bothered returning it. Hesitant to buy a yamaha again unless I get to see it first. This review wont win any prizes.Daniel G.
What a great guitar! Really beautiful finish all glossy but the neck is as smooth as silk I don't know what they use but it's so nice to play. The guitar sounds very well rounded with a little extra in the low end. So the Reverb and Chorus sounds with a touch of a button are ultra cool, kinda like surround sound. You get used to it real quick very inspirational. Yamaha really went above and beyond on this one. With or without the electronics this is a great sounding instrument but with a trick like that I'm using it. Plugged in sounds amazing! There's no bass or treble knobs? So the EQ they give you is what you get really nice bass response though and the highs are very clear, I was impressed. Just an absolute joy to play.
Every time I pick this guitar up, I get more joy out of than the last time I picked it up. As others have noted: this guitar sounds amazing even without the transacoustic sound effects! IMO, it sounded better than much more expensive Taylors! So, yeah, not only does this guitar "sound great," but it's price is absolutely reasonable too! What's even more amazing: reviewers who pick this guitar up, on YouTube, seem to gush over it! I'm so happy to have one!Michael

I'm a semi-pro. I've played in various bands, solos and duos for 40+ years. My main gigging guitar has been an Alvarez Yiari for the past 30 years. I finally decided to upgrade the old technology pickups in that guitar and when I started discussing it with my luthier, I decided that the project would require too much plugging of old holes in the guitar and so I decided to purchase a new guitar. I had looked at new acoustics for several years and most of the guitarists I'm around are playing Taylors. Many of the older Taylors have an amplified sound that has too much treble in my opinion, although my rhythm guitarist in my current band has a couple of newer high-end Taylors which sound great! However, they were well beyond my budget for a stage guitar which can get knocked around. My new Yamaha A3R is good looking and is solid rosewood back and sides with a sitka spruce top. It has a rich sound unamplified, Plugging it in, I noticed a world of difference between it and my old Yiari. The A3R has beautiful tone plugged in! I especially like the two mic models and the blending switch between mic and piezo. I will predominantly use the mic setting for my acoustic duo and will blend in more piezo in my playing in the full band. I think the piezo will help cut the mix a little bit more. We go from ballads to rockers so with the turn of a single dial, I'll be able to better adjust the output of the guitar based on the type of song we're playing. I was concerned that the A3R would be more difficult to play compared to my Yiari and it is slightly harder to play leads on but it came with Elixir 12s and I usually play 11s. I do plan to take the A3R in to have the action lowered slightly after I've worn out this set of strings and then I feel there will be minimal difference in playablility between my two guitars. Hopefully, this guitar will hold up well. I plan to have it for a long, long time!BB Wolf
Love this guitar! Was a little worried at first thought it might be too tinny but once the strings got broken in it sounds nice and crisp. Stays in tune. Intonation is good out of the box. Can't beat the electronics. Love the look and feel! Might switch out the nut and saddle when it's time to switch out the strings. People have said this guitar punches above its weight and now I see why.Jeff
Purchased an A3R and received it last week. The guitar was beautiful out of the box and played great. I purchased because I wanted a guitar with solid rosewood back and sides for the tone and this guitar has not disappointed, it sounds great. Sweetwater was the only site that had a new A3R all the others I found were used or returned. Sweetwater was great to deal with and delivery was fast. I have played several more expensive guitars and the A3R holds its own against them. I have played 40 years plus and several different genres, but these days I play only in church and for fun with friends.
