Best Bike Racks For Mini Cooper (2024 Update)

This is a great two bike rack that I had about a year or two ago on my old car. It worked perfect on it! I got a new car last year and just got this rack again for it and it says that it’s compatible with my new car. I used it a couple of times and just now noticed that the bottom part of the rack had dented the trunk and left nasty scratches that now I’ll have to pay for since their customer service is garbage. Don’t put a vehicle on the list that isn’t full compatible… if you get this rack I recommend putting some extra padding on the bottom part of the rack or it could possibly damage your vehicle. It says it holds 70 lbs of bikes. The two bikes I use with it are way less than 70 pounds and the way the trunk is shaped causes it to push in and the metal ends up scraping the trunk. It should be one long foam padding on the bottom instead of one piece of foam on each side.Hunter

This rack might be able to hold two childrens bikes, but definitely not two adult bikes without serious problems. I would imagine the rubbing and bumping together just to get them on the rack would damage the finish…not to mention traveling with them. Theres just simply not enough space between the brackets. Its also the dickens to attach to our Equinox, even though it specifically states that it fits this car. I wouldnt want to carry more than one bike on it, and you need an additional bar (sold separately) to carry a womens bike. We returned it!Beverly

Great price $ and quality. Very solid construction and basic sturdy design. I have a MTB 29,r – 39lb. – this rack can hold 70lb. Single bike racks are usually 35lb. Weight capacity. Only have 1 bike to transport, but didnt want to risk the weight factor. Best thing out there for the $40 dollar price! Highly recommend. WAGWAG

I have an NV hitch rack that I love, so it was an easy decision to stay with Kuat for a roof bike rack. The Trio Rack is not cheap but it is typical great Kuat quality, mounts easy (with supplied wrench), and has the right components to fit my mountain or road bikes without purchasing other components separately. Nicely built rack that's designed for the thru axle fork bikes but can also be fitted to the older 9mm skewer type forks as well. Much better than thule or yakima.kevinaue0

Well built bike rack that is not flimsy. Securely holds bikes and does not round the frames keeping bikes from moving around. Highly recommended. The only fault I have is to use the channels obbmyncrossbadsbyiyjhdurling

Fits great into the HoldUp. It gets pretty big – but it holds 4 bikes easily – what do you want? Again – like the HoldUp, I wish I bought it years ago! Recommended to anyone!Richard

The bike rack is easy to assemble and seems quite sturdy. It seems to hold the bikes quite well and I like that the tires are not spitting in the wind. I have not yet Driven down the road on a long trip with it, so my comments are my initial reaction.Paul

Bought this a few weeks ago but the first time I tried to install it on my 2015 Suburban it was difficult to get the security cotter pin inserted into the hitch receiver bolt, due to the limited amount of space that the Suburban hitch received has to work with. After realizing that there was no way that my wife could install it by herself, decided to return the carrier. Also, the security provided by this carrier was limited at best, and the strapping system was not sufficient on its own to keep the manufacturer from feeling the need to include an additional loose strap for the user to wind in and around the posts and the bike frames to provide a second level of security to keep the bikes in place while being carried.RM Biker

Package was severely damaged upon delivery. Missing a part due to torn package. Assembly instructions were vague (hand drawn, blow-up that was not very clear). No instructions on how to use it with a bicycle – pretty much trial and error. Quality of the product was good – heavy-duty metal. Would recommend with reservations.gjheimes

We purchased 2 of these fork mounts. Love the locking mechanism. But please be ware. The quick release fork mount skewer will not fit all bike forks. Before you purchase this product. Take it out of the box and place your forks into the mount. Then adjust and close. Our 2 gravel Prologue Bikes forks did not fit. Our road bike forks did fit well. The skewer should be at least 1/4 inch longer. If the skewer was longer. Mounted to a 35 inch : 2×4. Now we can transport our 2 Bikes in our Audi Q5. I would give it A five star if the Skewer was longer. As our gravel bikes are our go to bikes when travelling.Gates

I bought two of these after my roof rack and 599 big mouth bike holders were damaged by a tractor trailer. I own a small minivan, mazda 5, and the rack is just high enough that I can just reach so there's always the potential for some difficulty putting a bike up there and this carrier exacerbates the issue. Without a decent tray the front wheel wants to turn and fall off requiring the fork to be held while leaning the bike to get the clamp past the stays and crank, but if the tray is remotely damp the rear wheel will slip out instead. The big issue is the tray really doesn't keep the wheels in place. I've since bought replacement 599s with proper trays and use these two as backups, I've had a lot of thule over the years but with the tray style these use, they're awfulruss

I am an avid cyclist and have used Thule products over the years along with others but keep coming back to Thule. My cycling has moved away from straight road and mountain biking towards gravel cycling. This rack is excellent all the way around and works well with a little prep; put the pedal facing you at the 4-5 o'clock position, push the straps behind the wheel holders, lift the arm up to about 40 degrees. I grab the seat tube and front fork on my BMC Road Machine and it goes right up and drops into place. I don't worry about it either as its stable as a rock at 70mph on the highway and off road at least up to our drop in points. I would not have mountain my prior mountain bike up top…its just too heavy for me to navigate…fit for purpose…hitch mount. It is sad to read the review where the bike shop installed this rack on a Subaru Crosstrek incorrectly, yea read and follow the simple instructions if you are going to mount it driver's side [reverse the jaw/holding arm first…]. Not that difficult. The jaw always opens facing you. In my opinion for a roof rack that lets you keep your front wheel on, especially those of us with Thru Axle's its the best. The pro ride XT is slick and holds onto the bike very tight. It is very easy to use when you actually read the instructions and put it onto the right side! Who knew?! And when lined up properly and tightened right it had no wobble cruising at 100km/h and 80km/h with winds, other than small shakes. Very impressed. Unfortunately It seems THULE decided that security should cost so you have to but the locks separately which just added to the already huge price. But it should last me a long time. I had purchased this bike rack because I was tired of the cheaper ones with hooks and straps that damaged the back of a car. When I received this, I was not disappointed at all. This rack stayed in place perfectly, held the bikes securely, and handled bumpy roads and different terrains amazingly. And even when there were no bike in it, the option to fold it up nice and compact against the back of the car was the best. One of the first things I did to put this rack to the test was a cross-country trip to Utah and I never worried about the bikes or had to check on them at all. I even recently got rear ended on the highway, and this rack actually saved my car from damage. Unfortunately, the rack was damaged beyond use but it could have been so much worse. Even the bikes were okay. I am already planning on replacing it with another one when I have the money. Buy this rack, you will be so happy.Alex B

For the price of this rack you would expect better build quality and durability. It squeaks when opening up the arms and folding the rack down. The rack is also rusting after less than a year. It's disappointing. I should've gotten a Thule. However it is light and compact. It doesn't take up much space. The twist knob to install is great too.W Tam

I bought the HoldUp Evo 2 rather than the Thule equivalent partly on price, partly on bulk (the Thule takes up more space on and off the car) and partly because I wanted to be able to add the Plus 2 extension to the Yakima so I could take four bikes. Overall it has been a good purchase, although I mainly use it for two bikes at a time – one of which is an E-MTB. The rack goes on and off the hitch-mount easily (once you've mastered the art and as long as you're strong enough to lift it). I like the fact that it locks onto the hitch-mount too, and the 'wobbling' problems that some people have mentioned when driving can be avoided if you wiggle the rack around a bit as you're tightening it onto the hitch-mount. On the downside it does have a couple of weak points in its design/construction. First, if you have 29 inch wheels you need to be very careful to position the front wheel clamp as close to the forks as possible (ie well over the arch of the wheel) to avoid the front wheel bouncing out of the wheel holder. Before I realised this I once got home to find one bike hanging off the rack and held on only by the rear wheel strap and the fact that its handlebars had become entangled in the bike next to it when it moved. User-error probably, but something to be aware of. More problematic for me has been that although the rack is advertised as taking the weight of an e-bike, the plastic bolts built into the rear wheel clamps don't seem strong enough. I've had two of those break in the year that I've had the rack, and I've ended up replacing them both with a stainless steel bolt which I bought from Bunnings. This has only been a problem when I've been carrying my E-MTB, not the standard bike. It's not an expensive fix, and perhaps something the factory should consider. Another problem I've had has been the built-in lock cable jamming in its housing so I was unable to use/move it. Living in Brisbane I was able to take the rack into the Yakima supplier and they fixed it for me, but it was irritating nevertheless. I should say that the customer service I've had from Yakima with these problems has been great, both in replacing broken parts and in fixing the lock when I went in to see them. However, given the price of the rack it would have been good if the design was such that the problems didn't occur in the first place. I would give this a 5 for its overall usability but marked down to a 4 because of the niggles I mention above.Jonathan W

Works like a charm. I have a Nissan Juke and this carrier worked perfectly. I had to buy an Allen bar for my women's bike to hang the bike on and then it worked great. This carrier is very sturdy and I feel the bike is very secure and stable on the car. Easy to put on and take off. I am 64 and can do it myself. So glad I found this so I can now go riding without having to borrow my husband's van to cart the bike around.lvdex

The customer service representative said I would have to pay shipping to return it even though they did not state that the bike rack was not universal in their description. Eventually customer service agreed to only charge me half on the shipping cost to return. Pocket friendly bike rack for regular use. Mounting and unmounting is very easy but I found the buckle of the straps to be little loose. Though we purchased the 2-bike carrier but we prefer to carry one inside and one on the rack for longer distances.Sambhabi

I have a hatchback. Works great. Never had a problem with it. Rack two bikes easily, and for far distances, of 2-3hours at a time. I Knot the ends of the rope off just as an extra safety but you don’t have to.Love

very good fork mount bike rack that is super easy to install. this fits perfectly on my yakima aero bars. i would give 5 stars however there isn’t enough clearance for my front caliper and the mounting bolt is constantly rubbing on the plastic base.Daniel

Little pricey, especially when you add the locks, but overall a solid and stable roof top mount. The locking dial made me a little nervous the first time I used it but it's been weeks now and no issues. I used the T slot adapter which eliminates the need for the straps, looks nice and streamlined. Kudos to Moosejaw, the bike mount showed up in 2 days from them. I ordered the T slot adapter the same day directly from Yakima, that showed up well over 2 weeks later.Jpk292

I have been using Yakima roof mount bike racks for almost 30 years with both mountain and road bikes. My current vehicle setup is a Ford Flex with 3 rooftop bars which allows me to load 6 road bikes or 5 mountain bikes with absolutely no handlebar interference issues with other bikes. The newer mountain bikes use a 12, 15 or 20mm thru-axle which doesn’t work anymore with the older style 9mm quick release racks without an adapter which has many issues of its own. I had put off buying new racks as long as possible and after doing a lot of research I had decided: 1) the “front wheel-on rack” options (like the Frontloader) was not going to work for me since it is too hard to load 5-6 bikes with both wheels on, onto the top of a vehicle. 2) a hitch mount was not desirable since my car is long and low to the ground and I have a very steep driveway. The only other rooftop option was the new Highspeed which uses the bikes thru-axle to mount. I like the idea except for one very poor design issue – most mountain bikes will likely not fit into the axle clamp. I have a stock Santa Cruz 5010 with Fox fork and SRAM 180mm brake rotors. The bottom of the brake caliper hits the top of the rack before it can sit down into the thru-axle clamp. I cannot believe this is even an issue as this is a brand new design from Yakima. You may not have issues with bikes with 160mm rotors as the caliper doesn’t sit as low, but a 180mm is pretty standard these days, and many going to 200mm. I didn’t try any bikes with Shimano brakes but assume it’s going to be the same issue. Besides the one big Con above, here are my other Pros & Cons. Pro… The rack is easy to take on and off the vehicle (like 60 seconds). The rack head sits way out over the mounting bar to allow for rear hatch clearance (also a Con). The rack has a wide sturdy mounting head. Cons… The thru-axel clamp head sits way out over the mounting bar, this could be a problem if you turn the racks backwards, I had interference with my rear hatch thus limiting how many bikes I could carry. The rack has a wide head (like 9”) and if you are mounting several things on your roof racks then space becomes an issue. Each rack requires the additional purchase of up to 4 lock cores: 1 to lock the rack to the cross bar, a 2nd lock to prevent the ratcheting knob from being turned (this is your main theft prevention for thru-axel bikes), a 3rd lock for the cable lock which is hard to use and basically useless since it takes about 10 seconds to cut one, and a 4th lock plus the purchase of a locking 9mm quick release is required if you want to lock any bikes with a 9mm quick release fork. I wasn’t willing to risk not having half the bikes I try to load not fitting, so I returned the Highspeed rack and went with a hitch mount which is a whole other story with lots of issues.Alan

Do not purchase this product. You will be completely disappointed if you do. I certainly am. After about 3 uses I noticed my bike had moved while driving and was sliding off the back. The plastic that is used to hold the bike in position is extremely week and bent and cracked after just a few uses. These pieces are not made from quality materials and are not strong enough to support the bikes. It is now useless after only a few uses. Unfortunately dealing with the company has been no better. You would think that they would want to correct the situation, but sadly that has not been the case. After much back and forth, I have only received a partial refund. I now have a useless bike rack and not enough to purchase a quality bike rack to replace this piece of rubbish. You can see in the photos how the plastic has just folded over offering no support to the frame. Aweful!Gregory

I have a Trek hybrid bike that I use for commuting to and from the store. I purchased a Wald folding rear folding bike basket from Amazon that I wanted to use with this rack. When i received the rack, the instructions were so difficult to understand that I had to seek the assistance of a fellow bike commuting enthusiast to help me assemble the rack and install it on my bike. The assembly and installation of this rack left much to be desired. My bike does not have eyelets on the frame or near the wheel hub, so my friend had to fashion two makeshift "eyelets" out of some washers and other screws that he already had. He also did not use the screws that were included with the rack, because they would not fit. Overall, although I was able to get this rack assembled and installed with help, I would not purchase it again, nor would I recommend it to someone else. Save a few extra bucks and buy a true universal bike rack. Oh, my folding bike basket did fit on the rack. I use this rack every time I use my bike (at least once weekly), and it works well. Wow what a cheap piece of cr–! A weld broke on one bracket – that goes down by the rear axle- good thing I can weld. Had to bend things to get stuff to line up. Had to drill out holes for bolts (that weren't included) to fit.Craig

Universal rack means install may/may not go smoothly. purchased this inexpensive rack for a friend's 700CX38 rei novara corsa ladies bike. she wanted to support a tote with farmer's mkt veg so supporting that tote weight steel rack was a must in my opin. rack is a steal at the price. photos i took show i had to use the rear fender mount hole with the parts included. i did try using the rack stays and there was an issue. did end up using some #8 machine screws/nuts. walmart sells a machine screw assortment and that should handle any issue that emerges. note i did end up turning the 45 degree angle attachment upside down if you will. it worked better. but, that's why this call this a universal rack. note i do have a bicycle work stand, good selection of tools, lighting, and patience. this is not a rush job. had to bend the bracket 25 degrees with my vise to perfect fit on fender attachment hole. see photo. if you are unsure of your bike mechanic skills enlist a friend. 4 hands are helpful and another set of eyes to perhaps see a more opportune method of attachment. do not tighten screws/nuts/nylon lock nuts (provided) until all adjustments made and you are pleased. also, drag out a level and be certain your new rack is level. all in all, walmart's vendor offers a great product with this rack at a rock bottom price. summing up: i'm 71 and had a good time making a friend's bike more utility friendly. project was fun.tony

Overall I am content with the function of this rack, but several things could and should be improved. The good: loading and unloading the bikes is fast and easy. The rack fits into my 2” receiver with minimal play and locks down with the supplied bolt. Low profile and folding feature works as expected. The not-so-good: their is play in both pivot points with no way of tightening, so the rack bounces a little when loaded. Also, the release mechanism rattles inside the rack. This rattle is loud enough to hear inside the vehicle, when all windows and doors are closed and driving down the road. So while the rack feels safe and secure, the design allows for excess play and noise that are mildly annoying. So far these issues do not affect the safety or performance of the rack in any way.MNSwede

I bought this bike rack this week and installed this morning. The installation to the hitch mount was pretty easy to do. The only thing that isn't great with the initial part is that the bolt that came with the rack does not go all the way through to the other side of the hitch receiver. Luckily, I preemptively order a hitch lock on amazon, so hopefully that will solve that part. The other issue is that the bolts for the mast are difficult to tighten without a wrench to hold it in place so you can tighten the bolt. If you plan on driving and hitting bumps at speeds higher than 35mph you will see some movement with the bikes on the rack but the rack seems to be sturdy enough on the first trial run with bikes loaded. All in all, I think it's a good rack for the money, but only time will tell. I think if you can get the next level Thule products it may be worth the investment for more peace of mind when driving.Cfosse

The rack is a much better solution than stuffing my bike into a Subaru hatch. The rack made my cycling life much better. However, the hard plastic anti-sway stablizer and band, scratched the paint off my mountain bike where contact was made. Being a mountain bike, I wasn't too concerned, but the bike was newish and clean. The rack also gets loose in the hitch after riding around some short distances, and I have to tighten bolt all the time now. I got a hitch stablizer coming that I hope makes things better. Alas every bike rack solution seems to have a built-in flaw. A shelf rack is probably better than a hanging rack but the shelf racks stick-out pretty far, and they could get lose as wellJohnse0

Very happy with this rack, purchased two for my wife's and my mountain bikes. Slimline design looks good on the roof, not bulky. Easy to use and came with the same coded key ( very helpfull ). Tested on a winding country road with no issues. Slight rattle around corners from the rear mounting plate where it slides into the rack body. As a general rule i detest rattles in my vehicles but maybe as i know what it is and that it's secure, it doesn't seem to bother me too much.
