Best Blonde For Neutral Skin Tone (2024 Update)

My hair was a highly dull off-black with an auburn brown tint from sun exposure. The ends (about 3inches) of my hair was a dark blond from permanent hair dye about 2yrs ago that was still growing out. My hair length is a few inches past my collar bone so I suppose it's medium length. I have high density hair (lots of hair strands) and my hair strands are thick. I would always have to buy 2 boxes of hair dye for my hair because it is so dense. However, I only needed one box of this hair dye and I even had about 1/4 of it left over. The box contains a set of instructions (which are very clear by the way), a sample of their shampoo and conditioner, gloves (which didn't break or tear), hair dye, developer, and an applicator bottle. I personally prefer using a mixing bowl and applicator brush. Next time, I will use those items instead. I parted my hair into six sections and worked one section at a time and started on the roots first throughout my head, then proceeded to the length of my hair. It states to let the dye sit for 20min but considering that my hair is a bit color resistant, I let it sit for about 40 instead. Normally, I wouldn't extend it for this amount of time, but considering this product was natural, I took a chance. I wouldn't recommend you do this but use your personal experience and judgement. The instructions strongly recommend that you do an allergy test (place the hair dye on inner elbow) and watch it over the next 48hrs to see if you will have an allergic reaction before using the hair dye. However, I did not do this. I do have sensitive skin but never had an allergic reaction to any hair dye so I based my decision partly off that. I didn't like the shampoo nor the conditioner that came with it. The shampoo made my hair tangle and it felt like it was stripping my hair. The conditioner wasn't effective in making my hair feel conditioned. The actual hair dye made my hair feel soft becaused it is packed with oils. I still would use the shampoo and conditioner since they are meant to work together after the hair dye process. The hair dye was a COMPLETE SUCCESS! It completely covered my blond ends and the entirety of my head. My hair is now black. I must state that this Poppyseed color (2N) is a NATURAL black so it is NOT jet black. I actually wanted jet black hair but the Vitamin Shoppe that I shopped at didn't have it so I got this instead. Next time, I will definitely be getting the jet black which is called Licorice (1N) which is the darkest shade. I can't wait to do it again!LovelyBreeze

Have been dying my grey roots every 3-4 weeks for about 10 years now and nice n easy in 6N (half a box) had been my drug of choice up to now. Few formula changes later and am ready to try something different. I like that I can easily measure out what I need to use as both are liquid and mixed in a 1:1 ratio. I love that there is no overpowering odour striking as soon as mixing happens although slightly unnerving that this mixes into a plastic-like gel with no other odour?(Not sure how natural it is?) It is odd but you do get used to it, just don’t get lulled into a false sense of security and make sure you take usual precautions to clean up any spillages etc as it does stain quickly as with any other dyes. Colour-wise is about equivalent to nice n easy one and covers grey well but does seem to fade quite quickly so have just started adding a couple of capfuls of 5N to half bottle 6N when applying to roots then rest of 6N for last 5 mins on rest of hair. Bought few boxes in a recent deal so got really good price – making it more on par with other hair dyes.DancingDonnaDee

This is a lovely hair colouring product: easy to use and great colour results. The smell is, not unpleasant, just different. My only criticism would be that using it on my level 7/8 hair, I used 8A, there isnt enough ash in it to counteract the orange undertone that kicks up when you lighten in that mid blonde range, so it looks a bit warmer than I would have liked. Toning shampoo (blue) helps. It will probably get cooler on my second use when I retouch my roots. It looked lovely on the lighter parts of my hair though so my advice would be to use it if your hair is lighter than a level 8, but be prepared for your colour to be warmer than ash if its darker. The hair mask thats included has a, again not unpleasant, smell to it thats different, but gives lovely, shiny results. I will be using this colour product again and would recommend it.aunty_deedee

On a mission to go more green, I wanted to switch out my hair dye. I found this dye in the grocery store and crossed my fingers that the jump in price was worth it. The first thing I noticed was there is almost no smell. I got some on my nose trying to detect an oder! The process was the same as any box dye. While my hair was wet, it didn't look like the dye stuck so I was worried that it didn't work right. It was also really hard for me to get a brush through my hair. Once it dried, all worry was gone. I have the most shiny amazing hair with no funky smell. It even has more volume and feels lighter. Definitely my new go to when avoiding going to the salon. Depending on your stage of gray hair, it lasts about 4-8 weeks. My hair is less than 10% gray and sits right above my shoulders. I've been coloring my hair since I started going grey at 21 and and now in my mid 40's. I've been using this brand for a few years and have always had good results. I use Naturtint for many years and I am very satisfied with the results. This brand has organic ingredients without harsh chemicals. The hair dye to easy to apply on the scalp and does not have bad smell. As a result my hair is healthy and feels very soft & shiny. It is really important for me that Naturtint cover my gray hair. I like thst there is no amonia in this formula and it covers grey hairs nicely. One thing I do find though is that it seems to really dry out my hair and then I can't get a hairbrush through it easily even after using the conditioner included. It takes almost a month for my hair to feel normal afterwards. I have used this brand for at least 10 years and I find they tend to dye your hair darker at first snd then the hair color tends to lighten up after about 4 weeks I find.Emily

This hair colorant is very gentle and no harsh reaction on my scalp nor hair that looks like a scarecrow after using it. The Sandy Blonde, in particular, colors my roots perfectly and grows out beautifully to a high-lighted look that people comment on all the time. Go with Excellence. I normally use L’Oréal Excellence but decided to tried something different and tried Preference in same shade I usually use in dark ash brown. Well, Excellence does a better job… Preference faded and washed out from my gray roots. I had to do a double take to make sure I used permanent dye. Well it was! I have partial gray areas I use the dye to cover. I don’t recall having this issue w/ Excellence. If you have gray you’re looking to cover, go with Excellence. More user friendly also since it’s cream based not liquid as well.Target Shopper

I was looking to color my hair auburn which is exactly what this product did. I had medium brown virgin hair with a few grey's. I would suggest to apply the product to the middle and ends of your hair for 15 minutes and only apply to roots for maybe seven minutes. I did get some hot roots in a small patch near the front of my hairline. I will be googling and youtubing how to correct that spot. I would definitely not keep it on my roots for the full 10 minutes the box suggests. There is not alot of multidimension color but there is definitely color change from my medium brown. I think that the product doesn't need to be as strong as it is. I don't know a ton about color, but this company should maybe use a less harsh developer? They are trying to appeal to a large audience, but they are just messing up alot of people haircoloring experience. I read alot of the reviews beforehand so I knew that my hair would go auburn. If someone just picks the box and thinks their hair is gonna have Carmel highlights they are in for a unpleasant surprise.Sarah

I thought the product was magnificent. The one application was enough to cover my entire head from root to end and when my hair is wet it lands on my shoulders and I have naturally curly hair. I have tons of white hair or with some would call grey very heavy in the front. I have been ill and having colored my hair in 6 months. My hair is naturally black but at 55 I want it to go lighter without anything pulling red. The results are absolutely stunning. Again more than enough color cover all my hair from root to end professional disposable gloves that are easy to take on and off, and a great tube of conditioner that can last me for about three applications. I received this product and was eager to trial it. There’s nothing quite like a colour touch up to make you feel a little more refreshed and energised! The product was super easy to use and everything needed was contained in one compact box. I followed the directions with ease and all progressed to plan. The end result was reasonably true to the desired colour although my hair did end up more orange than I had anticipated. I accept this can happen with hair colours because there are so many factors that contribute to the end result. The hair colour did address my primary concern – covering the dreaded greys! The smell was not offensive as can happen with some brands and I liked the fuss free application process. A major benefit is the convenience of doing this at home at a time that suits me and a cost that is budget friendly! In particular, I have used the shade 'Darkest brown' which is the same shade I'm trialing today. The shade has always been is a lovely vibrant colour and the colour result is similar to my natural hair colour. The dye promises to 100% grey hair coverage and it lives up to its promise. Preparing the dye for application is nice and easy. After applying the gloves that are included in the packaging, you pour the colour formula into the bottle of developer before placing the lid back on and shaking the bottle until completely mixed. It's that easy! Then starting at the roots, you evenly apply the dye. The dye goes on smoothly and, surprisingly, the dye scent isn't as strong as other brands. I have actually used this dye in the past, and can't recommend it enough. The range of colours on offer is wonderful as there is something there for everyone. I have dull brown hair, so usually opt for a warm shade to brighten my colour – I used the Medium Chestnut Brown 5RB. The instructions are clear and easy to follow and after spending 10 mins applying the product as thoroughly as I could, it took a simple 25 minutes to penetrate before washing it out and conditioning. The colour completely covered my greys (which was my main objective), but overall my hair looks so much healthier as it is shiny and the colour has more life to it. My favourite thing about this dye is that the colour brings out the natural highlights I have and it looks really natural. I had my hair bleached at a salon, after few months the contrast of the natural dark brown roots and the blond hair looked unpleasant to me. I made a very bad decision to color everything medium brown, and I thought how hard it could be. I don’t need to go to the salon. I got this box, and applied it according to the instruction, oh the smell of chemicals!!! I left it on the toots for 20min and on the blond hair for 5 minutes, guess what? My hair, dark brown root and the remaining blond part turned completely black, like really REALLY black. What is this garbage?Peggy

My natural hair is dark brown to black (1b-ish) (pictured) and I used the Auburn R6. I wanted a noticeable but not too dramatic red and got the perfect ginger. Some parts of my hair towards the end are darker but honestly I like the depth it gives. On sunnier days my hair looks more firey and changes to even a warm auburn/brown in lower lighting. I really like the color and think it compliments my skin tone. Instead of 25 mins I kept it for 45 just to make sure it took color 🙂 Definitely keeping this as my everyday shade for a long time, also I dyed it Feb 7th (the photos are from March 3rd 5th) and haven’t retouched yet if that info helps !TARAHMISU

I received Schwarzkopf Keratin Color in 8.0 Medium Blonde from Influenster in return for my honest review. I have used boxed colors in the past but for the past 5 years I have been mixing my own hair color using products from Sally's. My hair was in need of color, so this trial came at a good time. I have never used a color that had a pretreatment for your ends. It was easy to use but I didn't see that it made any difference honestly. I liked the texture of the color itself being a cream instead of liquid like some colors. It had an odor but not strong like many blonde colors. It took a bit to wash it out. I found it odd that I had to towel dry my hair and then put on the conditioner, then wait 3 minutes to wash it out. Overall the color came out nicely but still a little brassy despite the brassy correction conditioner. It did leave my hair a little frizzy and the ends aren't as nice as usual. For a box color it is good though.jessica .b

I received a box of Schwarzkopf Keratin Color Cream for True Blondes and was very pleased with the results! Pre-pandemic I was in the salon for color every two months and never thought I could get good color at home. Schwarzkopf Keratin Color Cream made getting great color at home easy, virtually mess free, and from start to finish, it took about an hour. The instructions are easy to follow and required just a bit of mixing. My hair is a darker blonde with some of red. I used Dark Ash Blonde color and and the color came out great leaving a nice wash of color with no brassiness. My hair was left really shinny and had great dimension. The conditioner packet in the box was an amazing addition because it left my hair feeling really silky and smelling great. I would have loved a slightly larger tube of conditioner since my hair is very long and I only got one use out of it. I can't wait to see how long the color lasts but I would definitely use this Schwarzkopf Keratin Color Cream again.keely.n

Well I'm not a huge fan of the Schwarzkopf Keratin Color 9.1 Light Ash Blonde .😔 I normally keep my hair platinum blonde sometimes I might add another color just for fun. My hair is dry brittle from all the bleaching throughout the years but I've never had any problems with it falling out or frying until now. 😮 I thought it was interesting this kit contained a hair Serum to apply before coloring but other than that, the process isn't any different from the other coloring kits. I applied the Serum and mixed applied the color. I left it on roughly 35 minutes. After I washed it out, I towel dried and added toner . I left the toner on another 2 min. I noticed my hair was unbelievable dry . I added some Nexus conditioner let it set for a few then rinsed. While blow drying, I realized I was gonna have to cut a couple inches off my ends. So that's what I did. I personally am not a fan of this color because it's too gray for me plus there are some purple spots . I also noticed it didn't have a real bad ammonia smell like other color kits or highlighting kits I've had in the past.amanda.h

My wife now prefers this over the major brands. She has been using it for a couple of years unless she runs out and we aren't ordering anything on Vitacost. She loves the color (honey blonde 9N) and so do I. Per the FAQs on their website "Naturtint® does not contain parabens, silicones, paraffin, mineral oils, heavy metals, artificial fragrances, SLS, or formaldehyde derivatives. Naturtint® is not tested on animals. Naturtint® uses ethanolamine as the alkaline medium; it is less aggressive than ammonia and achieves the proper pH in a gentler way." So we feel a little better about what's going down the drain, and what isn't. But the color is what matters most and it's a winner. You can buy cheaper hair color, but why?victorspoils

I've been using Naturtint for awhile now. I have long hair and a lot of hair so I find it necessary to use 2 boxes each time that I want to color my hair all over. Sometimes there's some product leftover but it's necessary to ensure I can saturate all the way to the roots. Actually my friend colors for me because when I've done it myself I have ended up with irregular color in spots. Also, I mix colors. I use 1 9N honey blond plus 1 wheat germ blonde. I put 1/2 of each of the colorant into the bottle so that both bottles are the same. I also add a touch of one of the red hues to get a nice strawberry blonde. I get lots of compliments on my color. As a natural blonde starting to go gray it's hard to keep red color on – so it fades betweens colorings. This product fully covers my grays when applied correctly and left on for the right amount of time. I Recommend having a friend help and be sure to get all the way to the scalp to cover roots and the temples are another spot that are easy to miss – be sure to get all the way to your face at your temples. I didn't do much salon coloring before I started naturtint but this seems gentle on my hair. Happy coloring!MagPie

Most natural shade of light/medium golden blonde ever! A real blonde that stops just short of hinting at strawberry blonde. Abundance of SHINE, highlights and lowlights. Most gentle hair color I''ve ever used (saying allot)! I''m not really hypersensitive to much of anything so can''t speak for anyone who is. But Naturtint caused less than the typical, mild sting/burn sensations during or after application. SO easy, smooth and slippery to work in and rinse out. Included shampoo is good, but Multiplier conditioner is extremely impressive with how slippery and revitalizing it is. And it actually foams up HUGE! Hair shed near to nothing…there''s a 1st! My hair is shoulder-length, baby-fine, average density and graying at roots. Texture changed with age (47) from slick-straight to wavy with fly-away ends/outer layer. To curb damage, I co-wash every other day and only shampoo with Rx7 monthly. Glad to find a NATURAL hair color that performs so GREAT. Just bought 5 more boxes.Lisa

I really liked how this turned out on my hair. My hair is already pretty dark but my roots grow in pretty fast so this was absolutely needed. It does not have a super strong chemical smell, and left my hair feeling soft: I have problems using color that often damages my curl pattern. This did not! This is my hair immediately after wash. For reference my hair is a medium to light brown with an ash undertone and some gray hairs. Midnight blue is really nice with an undertone of a blue tint but no actual blue to your hair. Jet black is very dark, sharp and glossy looking. Natural black still solid coverage but a softer tone to it. Chestnut brown has a golden almost auburn color to it. Red hot rhythms is stunning when first applied but quickly loses color in less than a week making your hair look very much like a box dye job. Golden blond is true golden warm tone but again you need a professional to lighten your hair first in order for the color to take all the way through your hair. I don't know who has their nose broken, but the conditioner smells absolutely fabulous. Reminds of a salon honestly. obviously when you're dying you need to have a fan going but even that's not a bad smell. Bottom line as with any color going darker than your hair tone is always easy and possible. And going lighter impossible without a bleach or toner to lighten it first before depositing color. Gray coverage 90%.SERINA

I really liked this brand, it was new to me and this is how I feel about it. Now that I’ve went through the process of dying my hair and the color has now been in for a full day. First the packaging was very neat and you knew what you were working with. Once opened everything was in the box with easy to read instructions. I was super excited to see the dye bottle was a twist off top. Usually I have to cut the tip of the dye bottle in the boxes dye that I normally use. The dye mixed after a few hard shakes, but once I poured into my hair I could see that it didn’t mix all the way so had to give a bit more hard shakes to get it to fully mix. The liquid itself was runny, I like my hair dye a bit less runny. The smell of it was not too powering, and once on the head and scalp it did burn a bit while I sat to catch my hair. The washout was nice and not messy. A few rinses and it came out clear. The product came with a very nice sized conditioner, that has left my hair super soft. The conditioner had a very nice smell. It reminded me of tropical fruit. My hair still smells like it, and I work all day. All my hair caught the color and came out great. I would recommend trying this brand if you have it within reach. My experience here was a bit different than all other previous reviews, so take it as it is. I have very thin curly brown hair and this gave me a nice dark blonde colour. It looks very beautiful in terms of colour, has good coverage and is easy to mix and apply (although you need your own bowl and mixing tool). My hair is long but one box was enough and unlike all other dyes, it didn't bleed to the towel or pillow at all and didn't stain my skin. Now the cons: it has a VERY strong smell when applying! Not sure how everyone is saying it smells good… the smell goes away the next day, but do not apply in a closed space. Also, and this made me fear for my life: my hair got extremely dry right after washing the dye off… it felt like I was touching hay and not hair. I was shocked!! Even after the conditioner from the box, my own conditioner, it felt like it was ruined… only after a week or so of putting leave in conditioner everyday and not using shampoo it got back to normal, so beware you may need to do some extra conditioner care afterwards (this never happened to me before with any other dye). I don't know if I would buy this brand again due to the dryness shock, but I do love the colour result…iHerb Customer

I buying this for my mom. she has 100 % of grey hair. and previously she tried many brands, and no any of them could stay and last more than a 2 weeks. She tried Herbatint and she got amazed. It covered all 100% of her grey hair and still lasting and it us already 2nd month now. Only the new growing hair is grey, So she just need to color the roots. But the rest hair is remaining the color. This Brand is the best. And absolutely chemical free. Because even it drop on clothes after washing it easily gone. I mixed this color (5D light golden chestnut) with 7D (golden blond). The ratio is one unit of developer to one unit of color. So I used a half unit of each color to equal one color unit and blended that with one unit of the developer. The remaining color that I didn't use from each bottle will be used next time, so I get two uses out of each box. I chose to blend those two colors to try to get close to my natural shade, which is a light brown with some golden strands and some hints of red. I did a bunch of research before I bought these colors. I learned that the same shades act differently on all different people and just accepted that I wouldn't be able to predict the exact outcome. If you want to be more sure of the actual result, you can save your hair from the shower for a week and then use that as a test to see how the color takes to your hair. Who knew there'd be a use for that annoying shower hair! My results were quite dark the day that I dyed it — it was a rich chocolate tone. It lightened up after a few washes. It's now been more than a week since I colored it and it looks great. I have about 20% gray and it covered them well. I like that the formula doesn't have a harsh chemical scent. Please note that the packages don't include a bowl to mix the solution in or an applicator for putting the mixture in your hair' plan accordingly so you have the materials on hand. Really impressed with this. I bought 7 Dark Blonde after a particularly bad 'balayage' job (mostly awful white/yellow highlights) and the colour has come out exactly as it's shown on the box. I still had my natural light brown roots and this has blended really well after being on for 20 minutes. It's obviously not the colour I wanted when I set out trying to be lighter with the initial balayage attempt, but it has rescued my hair from that disaster, and at least I can leave the house again without a hat! It's in no way very dark, and as it's a semi dye it will fade and the lighter colours will come through again a bit more in time. If you're despairing about a terrible blonde dye job and want to get back to a dark blonde/lighter brown then this is for you. I did use a purple shampoo on my hair a few days before I used the dye, although I'm not sure how much difference it made to this outcome. This dye seems to have redder tones to it after application which might freak you out initially, but it settles and blends. It does give good coverage, and the blonde comes through with subtle tones, so don't use it if you want to still be mainly a light blonde colour, you will most likely be the colour on the box. If you're looking for something to just tone down yellow brassiness then I don't think this will be for you, as I think it will initially cover your blonde. As ever, it's good to do a patch test if you're not sure you'll like the final results.Anna

I have been using this brand haircolor for years, trying different shades. I recently went through chemo therapy and lost all my hair. Since it’s grown back in its come in with a lot of grey. I have naturally medium brown hair. It is in excellent condition and thought I would color it with this new formula. So many reviews state the new formula is not as good as the old, I love the new formula. No burning on application, no hot roots, more even coverage. Many reviews also stated that the sheets are much darker than reflected on the box. For this reason I purchased suede light brown. It is so dark! Thankfully I don’t mind dark hair on myself. This is the only negative. My hair feels so soft and fluffy. And it was great at covering my greys! I will definitely purchase again. I used to color my hair with Clairol Natural Instincts about 10 years ago and never had an issue. With a special event coming up I decided to freshen my hair up with some color. Upon reading the instructions it seemed as if the product had improved since I last used it. I bought two packages, but one bottle covered my shoulder-length hair just fine. However, after applying and rinsing out the product as instructed, I noticed that my hair didn't feel very good. Back in the day it used to leave my hair super silky and soft, like a model in a shampoo commercial. But the real horror happened after I dried my hair and realized that the color I got was NOT the color on the box! I selected #4 dark brown to get a Hersheys dark chocolate color. Instead my hair came out looking like kona coffee grounds in water (aka, almost black). It looks completely unnatural and now I'm trying to desperately get it to wash out early. (In the shower for the first wash since coloring, my hair felt like even more of a bird's nest than when I rinsed the dye out. Bleh!) I have now sworn off hair dye for the rest of my life. Hopefully by the time I get to the special event this weekend some of it will have washed out.Amanda

I have been using Herbatint for about 10 years, did try different colors combinations: red, brown, blond.—never disappointed with the condition of my hair after coloring. Then i decided to try the Naturigin brand. First i google it—brand from Denmark. I sought why not. Color—light Ash blond is as pictured—true Light Ash blond, but my hair felt so dry—like a hay. I tried differend moisturizer, but damage has been done. I have fine hair and i believe whatever was in this color was too strong for my hair type—it burned and got a lot of breakage. it’s never happened to me after using the Herbatint. Took 3 bottles to cover my whole head. I have shoulder length (when stretched) 4b/4c hair. I feel like less product is coming in the bottles. Buy one more than you think you need. My hair has been previously dyed so the first 2 pictures are more accurate results.Nota_Mermaid

I love the color guide! I used it to help me in choosing the right color for my hair. At least this way I know what to expect my results to be like. I love a good hair color that is designed for women of color! This works great with my skin tone. The nourishing care conditioner is amazing because it can be applied on the skin before you put the hair color so your skin doesn't stain. The conditioner is infused with argan oil and Vitamin E which is great because it has no harm on the skin. I only needed one box for my hair. My hair length is past my shoulder.
