My hair is thin and wavy, with low porosity. I rarely wear it in its natural state, opting to dry with a round blow-dryer brush and flat iron. SCENT: This reminds me of the Melrose Place scent, and is noticeable upon spritzing, but fades rather quickly. TEXTURE: A little goes a long way. The right amount gives my hair volume; too much gave it a crispy texture. Overall: I tried this four different ways, With varying degrees of success. First, using my everyday product routine, using Kérastase Nutritive Nectar, Color WOW Dream Coat and Olaplex #6 on the ends of my hair. I misted the OUAI all over, then sectioned and twisted my hair, pinning each section at the bottom and air drying. The result was a somewhat frizzy mess. Second, I used it as a substitute for dry shampoo (which I do not use) to see if it would ‘wake up’ and refresh day-old washed hair. Unfortunately this made my hair look greasy, so that was a quick no-go. Third, I used a curl defining cream (MoroccanOil Curl Cream) and sprayed the Ouai, repeating the styling steps above, and gently blow drying after allowing my hair to air dry for about a half hour. This combination gave my hair very soft, natural-looking waves that I pulled up into a ponytail. This look lasted all day, through being out in the sun, heat, and misters. It was a style I have attempted before, but by the end of the day it is usually flat. This was encouraging! On my fourth and final attempt, I used the curl cream, repeated the original styling steps, and used a diffuser to blow dry my hair. This resulted in slightly defined waves that felt a little crispy, with an overall voluminous effect. Final Thoughts: This is not a product that I would use often, only due to the texture/thickness of my hair. Although it does provide some added volume, finding the right balance between full and crunchy is tricky. For someone who washes their hair 2-3x a week, this can be a tricky product to use. I have 2B hair, and a lot of it, but my hair texture is very fine, unlike many people with strong natural wave patterns. Curl creams tend to weigh down my hair, making it flat and greasy. Salt sprays are of course drying and damaging in the long term. But Ouai Wave Spray is the perfect product! It has the nourishment and definition which other people can get from the shea butter heavy creams, all in such an easy and light manner! I simply rake the spray through my hair and scrunch with it right out of the shower then use a medium-hold gel to maintain definition throughout the day. I received this complimentary product to test from Influenster. I used this Coco Dew as a re-styler on dirty hair to see how it fared. I revamped an old twist out using a mist of water and this product only to flat twist my medium length 4c hair into jumbo sections. The product definitely gives you a salon vibe. Milano products always smell wonderful and this did not disappoint. It smells expensive. The next day I took down my flat twists and revealed plump and juicy definition. My hair smelled freshly washed and was shiny, and moisturized. However, once I manipulated the curls, they got frizzy very quickly on the ends. This is not a product containing hold. The next time, I’ll pair with either holding spray or a curl creme for more staying power. I received this product free from Influenster and Mizani in exchange for my honest experience. First, I have to say that I love the smell, it is a soft coconut scent that is not overpowering at all. The application of the product is super easy thanks to the spray nozzle that gives you more control when applying. I just use a very small amount like directions advised, worked it into my wet hair, scrunched it with my hands and let air dry. My hair is sooo soft, no frizz and my curls are defined. I found this product yearssss ago when I first started the Curly Girl Method. It was very runny, white and much lighter. I ended up repurchasing it and when I opened it, it is incredibly yellow and thick and the ingredient list is completely different. I have the worst problem with frizz. My hair is dry my scalp is dry it hurts, it’s course and thick and just awful😂 I’ve been looking for shampoo to help with this being that I live in an area with hard tap water. THAT BEING SAID. I wanted to wash several times before writing a review. The shampoo went on normally, lathered nice, smelled great. I could feel the moisture in my scalp and my hair being rejuvenated. But the conditioner. THE CONDITIONER THOOOOOO. Usually I gotta put a bunch in my hand and then go back 3 more times till the whole bottles gone in one wash😅 I put a lil on my hand about the same amount of shampoo. When I started lathering it actually reached the ends and all the in between. I didn’t have to go back for more and that had me absolutely shook😂 The spritz is a nice little touch not sure what it does but it smells good and kept my hair so shiny😍elisia.a
I have low porosity, medium density wavy/looser curly hair and honestly, would usually avoid products with protein since it can overload my hair! My hair is tighter curled on the bottom but the hair near my head is looser and becomes frizzy and loses shape quicker, I was gifted this product from my sister and I really love it! Despite being low porosity, our hair still needs protein so this is one of the few products I use that have it. I use it every few days after I wash my hair to refresh my curls and help keep their hold. It smells pretty good, like a clean earthy scent! I have loved just about everything I've used from Paul Mitchell. The product seems to do what it is designed to do, only tried it once. However, I would like to know how this product passed quality control due to the smell?!! It literally smells like the bottom of a litter box with 4 Male cats. I had to spray body spray in my hair because I was afraid other people would think I had on dirty clothes. I haven't decided if I will return it since my hair seems to like it (fine loose curls). It's super easy to apply and I was looking for something that not only added moisture to my hair but would help bring my dry damaged curls back to life and this product has been very good so far! Not a fan. I read many reviews on this product before I purchased it and was highly disappointed after the first use. First, the bottle sprayer part acted funky. It was a short spray and only a little bit of product came out. The product was thick, heavy, sticky, and slightly glob-E. I've been looking for a refresher for quite some time now and it seems that up until this point, they've all been sub-par. They either weigh my hair down too much or do absolutely nothing. I've tried mousses, creams, and sprays and I haven't been a fan of any. I saw this in-store and decided to give it a try. It was pretty inexpensive (and I've spent $30 on some). I use the leave-in from this brand it's pretty good. So I thought, why not? I love the smell this product has. It's not too perfumy and reminds me of a pear scent instead of roses but I don't mind. I did notice an immediate reduction in frizz. I had recently purchased the No Frizz Spray from Living proof and was disappointed by it. But this one tamed my mane in just a few spritzes. I would say, do use it lightly. I can see why some people in the comments have said that it made their hair greasy. It could if you spray too much. I use this product on my wet hair after I apply my leave-in conditioner. Afterwards, I typically do a twist or some other style by applying one of the other Designing Essential products to each twist. I also use this product on my dry hair to refresh my hair / twists in between shampoos. This curl cream was one of my first purchases from Mielle! I was very excited to use it, it actually worked great for my curly hair at first. My hair actually started growing out thicker. I was also using the avocado moisturizer with this curl cream. Unfortunately, I noticed that with or without the moisturizer, my hair still looked like dry curls! Herbal Essence smooths my hair more than these products! The shampoo and conditioner are so harsh are my curly hair, it is left dry and brittle after each time I've used it. My scalp is always itchy also. I use a wet brush in the shower to comb through the conditioner and detangle my hair, but it is a work out with this conditioner. There is no slip. After my hair dries it ends up severely tangled, knotted, and deprived of moisture. Not only are the products poor quality but the packaging is terrible. It's really hard to pop open the caps. I have had to unscrew the lids off every time to get product out. You also can't squeeze them much so that makes it difficult to use all of the product in the bottle as well. Lastly, the smell isn't very nice either. It's tolerable, but not preferable. I wish I could say there was anything redeeming about these products, especially since they were so expensive, but unfortunately these are a huge miss and I can't imagine why any salon is carrying them.Shannon

This is a great product on its own or combined with a few others. I switched from Carol's Daughter refresher spray and I am so glad I did. I love the fine mist with this product and the smell, and it makes my hair much curlier and bouncier. I tend to use this on next day hair, third-day hair etc and I spray it sometimes on its own or first I sprit water, then this product, lifting my hair to get it throughout. Scrunch my hair, and I will either apply the Deva Curl styling cream or the Alterna Caviar light-weight oil to lock everything in and then out the door, I go looking fabulous. I get so many compliments on how good my hair looks! I wanted to try new products for my curls since my pregnancy had caused my hair to react differently to my usual curl hair routine. I tried this product 3 months postpartum, after going through the post baby hair loss and what not. Cut my hair to a healthier length and was ready to get my curls back into shape. Decided to try Devacurl products since I had heard they were amazing. Tried this and some of their gels. It left my hair super frizzy with no curl definition. I tired using the gel 5 times and making sure it wasn't on my hair too soon after washing and it didn't matter. Frizzy and no curl definition. Tried this curl refresher on 2nd day hair and it just made my hair very frizzy and the smell was awful. It left my hair feeling really gross and brittle. I'm so disappointed at these products especially for the price point. I saw other reviews mentioning hair loss and thinning. This spray does give your hair a boost that probably couldn’t be achieved otherwise. It is in liquid form that you spray on your roots and let it do it’s magic. The reason I am giving it three stars is the condition it leaves your hair of the areas the product was applied to. It feels like it has been back combed. This stuff is pure MAGIC! You only need a tiny spritz on the roots. This product is tricky, here is how I recommend using it. On clean wet hair, spray in your leave in conditioner/ moisturizing products first, then rough Blowdry your hair to about 60% dry, then as you Blowdry your hair, use this product on your roots section by section at the root. A little goes a long way so you don’t need to spray it all over, one spray at the root is enough per section to give you volume and hold that will last for days. If you spray too much, your hair will be hard to manage and hard to put a brush through so just a small spritz is enough! This product Can last you forever!!!! I absolutely LOVE and adore this gel! I have medium length 3B/medium porosity hair and this gel has been a total game changer for me! I've been doing the same hair routine for decades with ok curls that I could never leave down because they'd frizz after a few hours. A year ago I started experimenting and really doing research on what could work better for my hair. I have genetic hair loss and have lost a ton of density over the last five years and I'm trying improve and preserve what I have for as long as I still have it. I was always told my curls were "pretty," then I started using the Curl Defining Styling Soufflé after trialing another cream/gel from a different line of product and I got a ton more compliments on my curls and could leave it down for longer. After that trial, I tried this gel and oh my goodness, my curls are even more amazing! They don't feel stiff and scrunchy, they don't look like they are held with gel, but they hold for DAYS, not hours like before, but DAYS! I get compliments all the time on my curls now, even on day 3 between washes! My hair looks shinier without being greasy or stiff too. I can't say enough good things about this gel. I don't use it in the shower, when I tried it on fully wet hair, I had less curls and less volume, but that's just my hair. You'll need to play around with your curls to see what works for you. I comb my hair in the shower while I condition, lightly wrap my hair in a towel for a few minutes when I get out (no rubbing!), then put in my leave-in (Multi Tasking Conditioner) with prayer hands then put in this gel with prayer hands, do some gently scrunching and I'm good to go. I'm unorthodox and I go to bed with wet hair but lay my hair "up" on my pillow to dry and I get a ton more root volume and just have to scrunch and finger comb a bit of volume in in the morning and I'm good to go. Unfortunately, this stuff is awful. I originally purchased the blue one, but the smell of it makes me nauseous so I decided to try the orange. It smells better, but sadly that is the only thing going for it. I tried multiple times, styling both in shower and out and this formula is not for my hair. I had hoped the firmer hold would help my fine, tight spiral curls hold up better on day 2-3, maybe even 4. Instead the gel was as crunchy as crunchy can be. Even after scrunching it to break the cast, going outside in humidity or sweating from walking would make it react and get sticky all over my neck, and then crunchy again. Overnight my curls got flattened and the gel held them in the most awful pressed and messed up shapes. I wouldn't recommend this to my worst enemy. What a mess.Bri
I have a fine hair texture and have some challenges getting my hair to look full. I usually apply a leave-in conditioner or cream before gel but I skipped that since I was trying this product first time and wanted to see what it did by itself. I sectioned my hair and I admit, I used more than a dime size per section. After I applied it using prayer hands, I brush it through using a flexi brush, then brush styled with my Denman brush. The only problem I encountered was it was difficult brush styling with the product in my hair as my hair was sticky. I will probably brush style then apply with soft prayer hands, then scrunch next time to see if that helps. Nevertheless, my curls starting popping while I was diffusing my hair. I'm not sure if it's because I only used one product, or if something about this one product helped, but my dry time was way quicker than normal to (which is great because it was about 85°F today). I went out and 2 people who see me all the time complimented my curls and that was a first. I only bought the travel size to try it, but I think this is one I'm going to repurchase a full size in. Oh, and I got great volume from it once I scrunched it out. The trick for me was not scrunching up to break the cast, but instead grabbing my hair in sections like little ponytails and massaging the hair together while I scrunched. It sounds scary, like it would cause frizz, but I the hold is so good that I didn't really get any frizz. I hope that helps, but I get it might not be for everyone.Waves&Smiles

I got this as a free gift with the air dry leave in conditioner. you're suppose to use them together on soaking wet hair…. they did nothing. it was as if I had no product in my hair. so I rinsed them out n tries it on towel dried hair and that's was even worse. if had to put mousse over the jelly just to get a cast so my large curls wouldnt fall out and had definition. now im left with a crunchy mess that I cant scrunch out and if I comb, pick, or brush it out im left looking like i stuck my finger in a light socket. how can something be a level 7 hold but literally have ZERO hold? the beauty advisors at ulta really need to start listening to customers. when I say I like the light weight of a mousse and how its defines my curls, dont try to sell me on everything BUT a mousse. if that's what im looking for then help me find one for my hair. no extras PERIOD!kalirocker
I started to use this hydro flex jelly last summer when I just wanted to give me hair a rest from defusing. I use this along with leave in cream and just love it. This product another one from the range allows the scalp to breath and not weigh hair down. I was pleasantly surprised with the results when I first used it. The curl definition is amazing and I was left with zero frizz. This jelly has some power and curl pattern is always kept passed day 2. I wanted to love this product so bad but I didn’t love it that much, thought it was ok. The scent is amazing. Very fresh and clean. The texture is nice and has a nice slip to it. I apply a good amount to my damp hair after a shower. The first time I used it I used it sparingly to not over to it. It made my hair feel dry but not have any hold to it, it felt horrible. The next wash day I used a lot more. It didn’t leave the drying feeling as when I used a small amount but the hold was WAY more mild than I expected for a 7 on the scale. I honestly can’t tell if it’s doing anything more for my hair than without. Maybe a little less frizz but it doesn’t make a cast over my waves or curls really. I actually prefer to air dry and this product allows that, though it takes hours to dry. Can form a slight cast which I actually love. Once fully dry any crunch is easily scrunched out. I NEVER have shine in my hair due to the coarse texture but with this my curls are defined and shiny. Best part is that even in high humidity this holds perfectly.
I cannot speak to 2nd or 3rd day hair as I haven’t been able to test this part yet.

I received this sample size product complimentary to try from Influenster and Moroccanoil for my honest review and opinion. I really liked the smell of this cream. My hair is kinda weird it’s curly underneath but on top it’s more wavy and frizzy. The parts where my hair is naturally more curly curled super pretty and looked great but the wavier pieces it didn’t change much. It felt a little heavy also but I may have just used to much product. I feel i would need to use it a few more times to give a more accurate review but right now I’d say it’s an average curl defining cream. I also let my hair air dry and I’m curious how it would look if I used a diffuser. I think I’ll end up buying a full size and give it a try. My daughter also has curlier hair than I do and I feel it may be better with her texture and curl. Overall I liked it and would recommend it for anyone with curlier hair.Meliss86
I LOVE this product and this whole brand. I was sent a sample of the curl defining cream and the smell won me over instantly. It just makes your hair smell so good. My husband thought it was my shampoo or conditioner, but he told me my hair smelt so good the first time I used this product. I even went and bought the perfect defense heat protector spray after they sent me this sample. I use it after I curl my hair with my straightener and it just makes my hair smell amazing, reduces any frizz left, and makes my curls bouncy. I also let my daughter use it and she loved it as well. She has super curly ringlets and used it after a shower and her curls looked so good. They were bouncy and frizzless. Received this as a free sample from Influenster. The sample size was a bit too small for me to get a full idea of how this product works for my hair specifically as I usually need a few weeks of use to make a fair judgement, but from a limited perspective, my takeaways are as follows: Smell- amazing, the standard MoroccanOil smell Texture- I prefer styling creams and used this in place of my current one and I did notice that this left a bit of a shell to my hair after use. If I had enough to try again, I may use a bit less product next time, though I didn’t use much. Seems pretty concentrated. If I had received a full bottle, I do think I’d continue to use it until it ran out but I don’t think I’ll be purchasing this item. Everyone’s hair is different and mine reacted sort of “meh.” Not bad but not impressive either. I think fans of the line will not regret the purchase, however I didn’t find that I had any urge to switch from my current styling cream (although this one smells so much better)roxanneh

My daughter has extremely long and thick hair. So if she doesnt keep it braided all the time, she can get a ton of tangles. I bought this spray because it was cheap. BIG MISTAKE! When I used it on her hair, it did help get the tangles out temporarily, but not for long. Her hair got really sticky and kept getting more tangles everytime I would brush another section of her hair. I didnt use too much of the spray because as soon as I sprayed it I could tell it was going to make her hair greasy. When I was done brushing all the sections of her hair and went to brush it all the way through one more time. Her hair was extremely sticky like I had used Hair Spray instead of a detangler. She said it felt gross so we went and washed it out immediately. When I read the ingredients on the back of the bottle, it says it is made with HONEY!? Really? Who makes a detangler spray with honey? Which is extremely sticky? They might be doing all natutal ingredients…..but honey doesnt work to detangle hair at all. Just beware. You get what you pay for with this product!Cassie
I purchased this for my biracial daughter with coiled hair. In the summer, I spray her hair down with water and apply products. But with it being the winter time, I don’t want her starting the day with soaking wet hair. I like how this nourishes her curls. It’s quick and easy and it allows her curls to bounce back with it isn’t a wash day. The only downside is that it doesn’t last as long as I would like. This isn’t the worst detangler spray but it’s not the best. It left a crunchy feel to my daughters hair once it dried, which isn’t may favorite but doesn’t help with hairstyles. The feeling of it is a little more on the slimy side rather than a silky kind of feeling. Also, it is pretty difficult to spray, especially when your hands are covered in that slime feel. This particular formula would probably benefit from a trigger type spray mechanism. All in all, it gets the job done but something better could be found.Nikkole
