I feel I'm better informed as to what fertilizer we will need to thicken the grass we have to support horses in our pasture. I used this in 8 different area in my years to test PH. Not sure if I got accurate readings or if the kit just doesn't work. Every reading I got was the same color and showed each pH level color exactly the same and much higher than I expected based on the soil I was testing. The instructions are unclear as to whether you are to empty the capsules into the sample or allow the capsules to dissolve. If you allow the capsule to dissolve, then every test will be green showing high pH. So that can't possibly be right. This was a cheap test, but did not even slightly meet my needs in anyway at all. The test of soil in my vegetable garden and power pots indicated depleted Nitrogen, Potassium and Phosphorus. The pH in the vegetable garden beds is 7 which is tolerable. It came out to be 6 in the flower pots. So I know why the vegetables were doing so poorly and the blooms look very weak. I collected three soil samples in sealed glass jars. Soil was taken from each jar to run a pH test using the kit. The remaining soil was sent to a reputable commercial laboratory in BC to be analyzed for pH. Kit results all indicated that each sample was at or slightly lower that 7 pH. The lab results indicated that pH ranged between 7.67 and 8.45. So the cheap kit test indicated slightly acidic soil and the expensive lab test indicated slightly alkaline. I'm going with the expensive lab test.Glenn
While I was able to get a reading on the soil PH, none of the other 3 tests in the kit worked. I did the tests 3 times, twice on my outdoor garden soil, and once on a high quality bagged potting mix, and still ended up with the same kind of results. The little capsules holding the powder for the tests are horribly difficult to open, and a few times I had to use up another capsule since the first opening resulted in dumping the contents all over the place.Melly

We don’t have a lot of extra time to dedicate to our garden so we co-op with a neighbor and family member and they use our garden. So it’s important to us to have the right tools and get great results since it effects more than just our family. We liked being able to use this kit to see exactly what the garden needed. It’s easy to use, comes with a good set of instructions and plenty of tablets to test again multiple times. There are 40 tablets in all. It even has a handy growers map on the back which is a nice reference when shopping around different plants and vegetables. It does require a few more tools than what is included and requires you be able to discern between shades of color for the reading which stumped us a little as we would lean one way or another but it’s a good basis to get started with and is certainly cheaper, faster, and easier than having to source the results from a professional lab. All in all it is effective and will last us a long time so the value is there. My grass wasnt seeming to do well with patches of brown here and there so I decided to test my soil in order to see what nutrients the soil was ccx deficient in and rather than call a company to take a soil sample and then have it take a few weeks, only to then try and sell me a huge service I probably didn't even need decided to try and do it myself. I decided oi n this kit as each of ube was to test for a different nutrient! I followed the easy to read clear cut instructions and took a soil sample from approximately 6-12 inches underground. Then removed any debris from the soil itself, and let it dry overnight. Then I put it into the test tube added the tablet, and turned it upside down and right side up 10 times. I then within a few minutes got my results. My soil had a higher than normal ph level ! I like that not only does this kit give you very easy to follow directions, but cones with a color results chart showing everything in nice bright bold colors that are easy ty o match to what shows up in the testtube. I like that theres enough tablets to run each test 10 times and that everything can be restored in the clamshell packaging. I like the fact that all the tablets come in a blister pack for freshness and ease of use. I was thrilled that even an inexperienced soil tester such as myself, can be made to feel confident with these results. I can’t remember the last time I had this much fun regarding lawn care. I absolutely love this soil testing kit. I felt like a child in a science class. I also had my four-year-old watch and observe and he thought it was so fascinating. The kit was so incredibly easy to use even for someone like myself who absolutely has no idea how to do soil testing and does not know much about gardening or taking care of soil. The kit came with a booklet that was very easy to read and follow. The booklet also had pictures and steps and color coordinated instructions that went along with the color coordinated tubes. Anyone can do this, even a young child, as long as they can read. I took some soil from my lawn since I am trying to work on growing my lawn and I always heard about soil testing but was intimidated because I had absolutely no idea. The tests don't work!! I compared the tests using my soil to tests from fertilizers with known quantities of nitrogen, potash and phosphorus after I doubted the results from my initial soil tests. I found on the P and K tests i could shake it for a whole minute and then if I let it set for 10 minutes it settles out to much to give an accurate test. The directions even say on the P test if that happens shake it again. I found both the P and K tests have to be shaken several different times several minutes apart then let them set for the prescribed 10 minutes and this kit gives VERY CONSISTENT results Very good product. This product works very well but you MUST follow the instructions. I have seen complaints on other web-sites that the reading from this product doesn't change from 7.0, but the user could not possibly have followed the instructions. I tested this product at around 20 different locations in my garden and got readings ranging from 5.5 (soil that had been recently composted) to 7.2 (soil next to a cement slab, which was leaching lime into the ground). To verify the accuracy of the pH meter I also tested the same soil samples using a universal colour testing kit (thymol blue, methyl red, bromothymol blue and phenolphthalein). Each sample matched the colour test to within 0.5, colours varying from orange to yellow to green. How to test: 1. Use a small hand trowel to dig a small hole where you want to test (10-12cm deep and 6-8cm across). 2. Remove any rocks which may damage the pH meter, don't worry about small pebbles. 3. Get some pH neutral water (rain water or distilled water) and pour half a cup into the hole. NB: It is important to use pH neutral water as tap water in some areas may be alkaline or acidic. 4. Stir the soil until you get a wet muddy mix. 5. Gently insert the pH meter into the soil and gently swirl it around so it fully contacts the wet soil. 6. The readingwill start to change. Leave it in for a minute and then remove it. 7. Write the pH down on a plastic plant label and insert it in the soil. 8. Gently wipe the pH meter clean and you're ready to take your next sample. I've lived here a long time and never really knew the exact Ph of the soil around me. Differant plants need a differant Ph so if your serious about what you grow, this is a must have. However, it is advertised above that the "Digital readout Prevents over watering Indoor/outdoor use". It is NOT a Moisture Meter. This seems like a pretty innovative idea. If there are DNA at home test kits, why can’t there be soil home test kits. I live in an area in the southeast with hard red clay that is a struggle to grow stuff or garden in. Some years I get things to grow and other years not so much. I decided to give this a try to see what nutrients I need to help things grow better. This kit comes in a simple box that includes the instructions, a return pre-paid envelope, a soil scoop and a container with some solution for the soil. The instructions are fairly simple. Dig 5 to 7 spots up to 6 inches deep, mix the soil in one bowl or bag, scoop a sample and mix it into the solution and then mail. The soil must be mailed within one day. I assume because it has some type of preservative that breaks down in a couple days. You register your kit online with the bar code or the include QR code with your phone. I do wonder why they need your address to register the kit, I am not sure that is necessary. The sample results were fairly quick as it took about 9 days in my case. The results are fairly straightforward with the nutrient and PH levels of the soil and fertilizer recommendations. I can only assume that the results are accurate as I have no other way to verify unless I had professional testing done. One thing I am pretty sure of in the results was the Sulphur results which indicated high and in the land of red clay, I can definitely say that is true. The one thing that I am a little leery of is that they make recommendations of fertilizer to buy from their “trusted vendors.” I can understand they are trying to sell their products, but is makes me a bit suspect in that regard. When I am not using a My Soil Test Kit in my own yard, I am using one for friends and neighbors. Soil testing doesn't get any simpler and I can do it all from home. The test kit comes to my door. When I get it I open it up and register the kit. There's even a QR code to make it simple even for first time users to register or returning users to log in. Then when I am ready, because the kit has a shelf life that does not require you to use it right away. When have time to take the test I dig several small holes in the yard and get literally a spoonful of dirt from just a few inches deep. I combine the small spoonful from the several holes and head inside. I mix the samples in a baggie and clean out and debris / twigs etc. All that is left is to put the dirt into the provided plastic scoop for measuring then pour the scoop into the provided container. I screw the lid on tightly and put it into the PRE-PAID envelope, then put it out for the mail man. That's it! In a couple of weeks you get a comprehensive soil report with recommendations for you to follow so you can add the proper amendments to your yard / garden. This is crucial if you want to take your lawn to the next level of a healthy and full stand of grass. If you didn't want to do the extra work then just show the test to your lawn care provider and get their feedback on what they can do for you. I purchased three of the Luster Leaf moisture probe, but one is not working (always shows plants dry even though they are wet). Plan to return for replacement. Otherwise, they are a great tool to have as I have a lot of different plants in pots and it really helps to check them with the probe.anonymous
The only thing rapid about this moisture meter is the rapidity with which it failed, in multiple ways. My previous meter lasted about ten years before breaking. This one lasted less than a half hour. My first two probings went as expected. On the third one, I felt a crunching and saw that the white plastic ring that separates the head from the rest of the spike had cracked and partially separated. On the fourth probe, the clear plastic cover to the gauge half popped out. On the fifth probe, the body separated along the seam. On the sixth probe, the spike pushed back up into the body. All subsequent probings proved fruitless, since the inner workings were obviously broken. None of the probings were in anything other soil that had been watered within days, so it wasn't that I tried to push it through too-hard soil. All were still crumbly or moist.CC

The filtering device cracks whenever one pushes down the plunger. This has happened twice. You sent me one replacement. The sediment leaks into the plunger so no readings can be made, BTW I am a chemical engineer and used to doing chemistry experiments. Purchased for my son's science fair project. Works well although I want something more than just a low, medium or high reading for the phosphates nitrates so I purchased the LaMotte Soil Test cards. (I wanted to make sure he could relate nitrates and phosphates in the soil to the nitrates and soil in the water). I'm also a science teacher. I used this product to test the N-P-K levels in my garden. Plants were turning yellow and dying. This kit consistently showed low chemical levels, so I added and kept adding synthetic and organic fertilizer. The readings remained the same: low levels of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. This did not make sense, so I did my own control test using nitrate fertilizer as my sample. The results said low levels of nitrogen. I talked with the R D guy at the company. He offered no explanation, other than the chemicals in the test kit may have been expired. They weren't; the label said they were good until Feb, 2021. I finally took samples of my garden soil to a local lab. The nutrient levels in those samples were actually 5 times the normal amount of N-P-K you would expect in a rich soil. This kit was 100% wrong and mislead me into adding more fertilizer to my already saturated soil. Don't waste your money. The information you get from the kit will be unreliable, and invalid.val m.
