20 Best Products To Make Hair Wavy (Feb 2023 Update)

Ok, so here's the thing this is a great product and I don't want to leave a crappy view because it didn't work in my hair the way I expected. Here's a little background on me, I have 3A with some 3b and I would even say there's some 2c. My hair is also very fine and gets weighed down VERY easily, therefore, it's up to me to look at product ingredients before purchasing because oils and butters, etc weigh my hair down. I purchased this product KNOWING better. I HAD to try it, after all, I loved the results that other people have had with this product. Unfortunately, with my fine and thin hair this product isn't the best match. I did get amazing definition, but what good is that if my hair is basically flat. SO, Pros: It gives me GREAT definition. I've basically already stated the cons, but if you've already purchased this and can't return it the best thing to do is play around with the amounts you're using. The first time I went in a little heavy handed because the product seemed light weight. I was wrong. I tried again using significantly less product with better results, BUT I was left with a little more frizz and still weighed down. If you know your hair gets weighed down easily, check the ingredients first. If you're hair doesn't get weighed down easily and loves oil, I would say this product would probably be amazing. I WOULD recommend this to other people, but for those with thicker/fuller hair.Jennifer

I saw on the Rizo’s Curls Instagram that everyone had the same curl pattern as me, so when Target was having 20% haircare that’s when I decided to try out most of these hair products. It’s a thick curl cream, with a strong lemon scent which I didn’t mind. I was so thrilled to try it out. Once I did, I remember being so happy, but realizing now my hair didn’t even curl. It was more of a poofy mess, and my hair was frizzy and dry. This product as well as this line did not work for me. The price is also a little expensive being almost $20 a piece. Hispanic/Caucasian with 3a-3b curls. I've used tons of products that make my hair curly and pretty for a day, but also like I'm wearing product. I've never had luck with using one product by itself. This curl cream works alone and gives me the curliest, bounciest curls of my life!!! The best part is, it looks completely natural and stays springy for days. My hair was in very bad shape, it was dry and frizzy looking. My curls were pretty much gone. I had it cut shorter and layered all over thinking that would fix it. It made the dry frizz look worse. I tried 10 different products but nothing helped until this little bottle of magic! I can not believe how great this texturizing cream works. My hair is cut to just above my shoulders, it's fine and thin. I put about half a dime size on towel dried hair, rub it between my hands and apply it to one side of my head roots to ends. I do the same for the other side, the top and the back. I kinda position it with my fingers, like where I want it parted and how much pushed back or forward. Then I use my damp towel and scrunch it into place. I have found that if I use my hands which are sticky from the product it pulls the outer hairs up and away from the rest and then it looks a bit frizzy. Now I either air dry or use my diffuser to dry from the bottom up. It's amazing how much it lifts my curls and it holds them all day. All bouncy, shiny and full without any frizz. If any area feels a little bit crunchy I use a tiny bit of It's A 10 between my fingertips to rub onto that area to soften the feel. It does not drop the curls at all. When I wake up, my curls are out of control. I wet my hands and scrunch my hair into place and it looks great until I shower later or until the next day. I'm in love with this product. I've used other TIGI products before over the years and they were all great. I just never tried a texturizing cream before. I thought it would weigh down my hair, but it did not. This has been part of my hair routine for years now. I have very fine curly hair, and this really helps to encourage the curls and define them. I only use a little (3 1/2 pumps on my just-past-shoulder-length hair) and I make sure my hair isn't too wet when I scrunch it through, because if it's too wet it makes the crunchy issue that some reviewers complained about. First of all, my bottle arrived and looks like it has been used and returned to merchant. The bottle seems to be broken as it doesn’t distribute the product like it is designed to do. It doesn’t do what you would expect. It doesn’t amplify and define curls. It’s more like a very light weight moose. As the hair dries, the product softens and your curls fall out. Once you put it in your hair, DO NOT use a comb or brush to distribute it. At most just your hands (fingers). And make sure hair is soaking wet (not damp) when you apply. Not so good for natural wavy curls but maybe if you have coily, bouncy curls it would work.JenM

This curl cream would be great for you if you’re not looking to have too much hold in your hair. It’s thick, but it doesn’t create a very strong cast for me. As you can see, my hair is already frizzing at the roots and it’s not completely dry yet. There’s no cast to scrunch out. The pump is also really hard to use and only dispenses like a dime size of product with each pump, which means I need to pump twice just to get enough for one section of hair. It is very hydrating, so I can’t knock it down too much, but it is probably my least favorite ouidad product, which is saying a lot because I LOVE ouidad. Just for reference, this was purchased for and used on biracial, relatively thick, spiral curly hair. This is a very lightweight, non greasy product with relatively good slip. It ends there. If this was the only product you wanted to use. No gel, no mouse, no oils, no creams, no leave in, no frizz control, I mean zero other products, then this might work for you. It immediately interacts with other products by leaving white clumps all over your hair. It doesn't matter if you use less/more of it or if you use less/more of the other, it is a disaster. I've tried this with SEVERAL other products from different lines and it always ends with the same result. It doesn't absorb later and disappear, instead the clumps turn into white flakes. Thousands of small white flakes. Like you've had glitter distributed through your hair. Water doesn't rid it. You must completely shampoo out the product.Donna L

I have 2C, high density, coarse, porous, long hair. Since adding heavy highlights to blend the grays, my hair has been a dry, frizzy nightmare! I have read endless product reviews, watched countless You Tube Videos regarding care and products for my hair. I have purchased so many products that it is insane, and none fully managed to clump my curls/waves and provide humidity protection.
I use a leave in conditioner applied in the shower to soaking wet hair. I then use a curl primer. I scrunch these products into hair and micro plop to remove excess water. I then apply curl keeper just like gel, using praying hands method to coat each curl. I add more to the crown and smooth over waves. I then plop for 10-30 minutes depending on if I’m air drying or diffusing.
I actually prefer to air dry and this product allows that, though it takes hours to dry. Can form a slight cast which I actually love. Once fully dry any crunch is easily scrunched out. I NEVER have shine in my hair due to the coarse texture but with this my curls are defined and shiny. Best part is that even in high humidity this holds perfectly.
I cannot speak to 2nd or 3rd day hair as I haven’t been able to test this part yet.

This conditioner is amazing! Of all the conditioners I’ve ever used (I’m in my 20’s so I’ve been through a looot of conditioners!) this one is by far the best. I don’t need a huge amount of it to get my hair untangled, and when I do brush through it I barely have any tangles at all. It’s also very gentle on my hair and the smell is light and not overpowering. So impressed with this product and very glad to have found it. Okay, at first I was suspicious about this product because I really only knew Sun Bum for their sunscreen so I was a little confused seeing they did products for hair. But guys…this product is AMAZING. As someone who constantly buys products to help her curly hair, this has been a life changer. I bought this on a whim because I was like, what's the harm in another product supposedly for curly hair? Boy was I surprised!! I used to cowash because I was having such a hard time keeping my hair from getting frizzy but as a consequence my roots would get kinda greasy and sometimes my curls didn't look as hydrated as the cowash would advertise. Finallyyyyy I found a product that actually hydrates my hair, makes it look great curly, and isn't making it frizzy or puffy. The only con about this product is that I really really wish they made versions of this product in larger bottles because the conditioner tends to go quickly especially if you have long curly hair like me. Delicious! Smells so good! I bought it to control frizz in my wavy hair. I am using in conjunction with the Curls & Waves Styling Creme and it is a nice combo for soft hair. was def excited to try a hair gel complimentary from DevaCurl for my honest opinion that claims to be not crunchy. I'm always very skeptical about products that claim to work hair miracles because I've experienced many let downs.. One difference about this is it says to work it in while curls are soaking wet. I still did get a little frizz but nothing like with what i usually use. I would purchase this and recommend it to other curly people. I did take one star for the frizz but would be curious to see how it holds up in an environment that's isn't as humid as whereI live.Laura

Yes! Her hair is fly-away frizzy with light curls like mine, and I think she'll appreciate this as I do. Even when I unthinkingly put a cheap gel on first one day (that I usually layer on when my hair is dried), it came out great with the 2 products piggybacked! And the effect lasts a few days between washings. I just need to fluff it up with a pic, even teasing parts a bit (I'm THAT old!) then smoothing over and applying hairspray. I did like the previous formulation better; I s'ppose the company got shamed into changing it (due to a TV documentary). But this is a great product for my fine hair.joyce

I used to use the Arc Angel gel and always liked it. I switched to Ouidad, which works great, but if I leave Ouidad on my hair for too many days without washing it, my scalp gets itchy. I saw Deva had changed the formula so I gave it a try. The gel has a nice thick consistency and you don't need a lot, which is great, however, you don't get nearly the definition and shine you used to get with Arc Angel. At the end of the day my hair is frizzy, the next day it's really a mess. I'm going to go back to Ouidad and just try a different formula. If you were a fan of Arc Angel, prepare to be disappointed.Mary

I use this on my curly hair— a little goes a long way— to hold my curls but to keep them soft and not crunchy. I put it on after my clients when they get a perm and many of my other clients who used to use Redken Curl converted to this because it gives the same feel but without the hefty price. This has the texture of a cream more than a gel, but still has quite a bit of hold for a thinner product. I have 3B ish hair that is very easily weighed down when wet, and this did a great job of giving enough hold without being too heavy. I also liked that I could use a lot of it (to get the benefits of a creamier texture) without getting weighed down. I am looking forward to trying the rest of the line, as this was such a nice experience! I think it would work well for a lot of different hair textures, as you can easily layer it or use less depending on your needs. First, I wouldn't call this product a gel. It's more of a cream gel, which should've been my first indication it wasn't going to work for me. Smell is good, product feels good. It provides a natural hold and my curls are very soft and touchable. However, I have high-porosity hair and need a product that forms a cast on my hair. This isn't it. If your hair is normal or low-porosity this product might work for you, but it just doesn't provide the hold that my curls need.Kristy

I want to be 100% clear here: the bottle pictured is for a new line to Redken's extensive products, CURVACEOUS, and the bottle pictured is for the already discontinued packaging. The product was introduced Winter of 2015 and repackaged by Spring 2016 (the bottles are now a grass green color). I am a licensed Cosmetologist, and I work in a Redken Salon (educated in a Redken franchise school "TSPA" so I am VERY familiar with every Redken product ever made). This line was developed specifically for people with wavy to curly hair, and it contains proteins, sugar crystals (to help curls reform into their natural shape), and Moranga oil (to provide deep moisture for dehydrated, porous curls). All Redken shampoos/conditioners are considered "treatment" shampoos and conditioners. I love this one for all hair types, even straight hair, because it is very concentrated (put a small amount in your hand then add water from the faucet!) so a small 8.5-10 oz bottle can outlast any gallon of cheap drugstore brand. I love this particular shampoo/conditioner line because it is amongst the lowest sulfate content (not a fan of the newest "high foam" formula for people who are convinced lather = clean) because it is the safest for color or otherwise chemically treated hair. Got a perm? Get curvaceous so it'll last and look its best! I LOVE LOVE LOVE this conditioner because it is extremely lightweight and designed to be used as a rinse out OR a leave-in! I find even in the salon, most people don't know this (even other Redken trained professionals like myself). So, for anyone with extremely dry, brittle, dull, damaged hair, especially those with a 3c-4c curl pattern, this conditioner can provide the best hydration, curl formation, and deep penetration of necessary proteins and oils to strengthen, improve, and add shine. This is a truly brilliant professional salon product, and Redken is amongst the most affordable of all professional salon products on the open market. LOVE IT!! (Be sure to look for it in salons ONLY as drugstores, supermarkets, and stores like Target or websites like O.co and Amazon are now carrying expired, discontinued, and even counterfeit products in violation of the contractual agreements these companies have to be sold ONLY by licensed professionals). Be sure to look for this with salons and other licensed professionals authorized to sell Redken products (Ulta Beauty is an excellent choice!) and look for it in the GREEN bottle, not this discontinued BLUE bottle. The styling/treatment products such as Rewind, Ringlet, and Full Swirl are all fantastic, too. Absolutely worth the money! In fact, when used correctly, you'll SAVE money over the water, sulfate, silicone, petroleum, alcohol, and filler infused junk you get at the drugstore that goes down the drain faster than your money and does nothing but leave your hair coated with petroleum and dimethicone giving the illusion your hair is softer and healthier when it's actually getting dryer and more damaged. I have loads of very fine, very curly hair. I've often been one of those that try new products and then try something else once it's halfway gone because it's only OK. Not this product. The curls are super well defined, no tackiness or crispiness, no dullness, just fresh light bouncy weightless curls. It's the only product I've used repeatedly. Tracee Ellis cut the check hunny! Lol honestly I tried this product on a whim, with no expectations and I was thoroughly impressed. The consistency of it is very creamy, smooth and rich. A little bit goes a long way. It's kind of pricey so I recommend starting off with your regular leaving conditioner that's water-based and let that product set on your hair, and then finish off with the styling cream! The smell is lovely, kind of a beachy but clean smelling! Left my curls soft, bouncy and not crunchy. I will be adding this styling cream to my routine!marilyn.e

I don't really give out 5 stars, that says I do enjoy this product and have repurchased it. Sephora please carry the jumbo size for us Canadians who don't want to order from the US. I have tried many hair moisturizers and this is the best one that I have used so far. It is pricy but last several months. It moisturizes and defines my hair. I like to apply it on soaking wet freshly washed hair (in the shower) and then finger detangle my hair. To further define my hair I use the Pattern hair brush and focus on my ends. During the week I lightly wet my hair and then apply a bit more product. I do not apply product to my hair everyday, water is enough to reactivate the product. I have dry hair and wash my hair one to two times a week. To provide more info I have type 4 coily/curly hair that tends to be on the dryer side, I also have a lot of shrinkage.DianyT

I really wanted to like this, but this product did very little for my hair. For reference, I have 2c-3a waves and curls. This product smells very nice, but the texture is very thin and sticky. Well this product does not work well with oil. It turned into white balls all over my hair. It make my scalp itch and flaked really bad. You will get a very hard curl so if this is what you want, it's for you. I would sample a small amount while at home with no other product. I have psoriasis on my scalp and my hair is curly dry and frizzy. My daily routine is add oil on my scalp and massage my scalp with it and then I put my curl cream and diffuse my hair. LOVE, Love, love it! I initially only bought the style cream, which was hard to distribute through wet hair and made it tacky. Then I noticed the style gel on the website and saw that it was a CREAM gel. Bought it, tried it on my wet hair after applying the leave in, then finished with the Jojoba oil blend and, "WOW!" my waves instantly popped and were elongated. My 2C/3A hair is transitioning and I chose not to do the "big chop", but whether I twist, braid, or bantu knot style, this gel provides superior slip and juicy moisture on wet hair and gives me an almost even wave pattern from root to end. It air dries soft (not glass hard like traditional gels) within a day, and makes my waves–even at the crown roots–feel like butter! I now only use the styling cream on dry hair when re-moisturizing and reactivating waves, as that works better for me. I also use the gel with the rehydrating mist on dry hair when restyling from loose waves to a ponytail to rehydrate and detangle the roots for a smooth finish…oh, and it smells good, too, without overwhelming my sinuses.Sandra C.

Very happy with my purchase so far. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I'm happy I gave this line a try. My last two washes, I give my hair a quick 5 min in a microfiber towel then spray the hydrating hair mist all over, followed by a quarter size of the leave-in conditioner, and then a quarter size of the curl gel. I let this air dry and I have SOFT, well formed, barely-frizzy waves. I would say, this definitely weighs down my curls a tad, as they're not as well-formed as I know they could be, but I am also not diffusing my hair and instead letting it air dry. My hair feels SOFT–I cannot stress this enough, as other products leave my hair feeling dry or crunchy, or both–and there is actual movement in my hair, which I rarely get. I know others mention the smell of the products is awful, but I have not had an issue. It's a very synthetic cucumber smell, but I find it quite faint. I absolutely positive love love love this hair product. Its called "Stricktly Curls" by @marcanthony. I started using this a little over a year ago and I've been in love ever since. @influenster -My hair does whatever it pleases, but works best this a few different products that are my go to's. This is creamy and molds, shapes, and holds my curls all day. It keep my curls pretty and curly all day. Plus it doesn't ever leave my hair crunchy, they are always soft. *So a) holds and automatically "curls" my hair (i put it in which scrunching my hair with my hand a a little, but it does the rest …. wizardry I tell ya.) And b) holds all day curls, keeping them soft and never crunchy. -Personally, I make sure my hair is damp first, then scrunch with my hands the product. As I journeyed through my 50’s, I was frustrated by the amount of time and money I was wasting on hair colour. So my hair stylist and I worked together to get my hair to its beautifully, naturally high-lighted, shade of gray. My hair is healthy and shiny, but I was missing the volumizing property that adding colour to my hair gave me. Then I was introduced to Puff shampoo and all my volume concerns were no more. I have fine hair but lots of it. The shampoo and conditioner are amazing!!!! My neighbour even commented on my hair and is now a die-hard Puff fan too. I am having a great experience with these products so far. I purchased the curly hair bundle, so shampoo, conditioner, curl balm, and spray gel. And after the first wash I feel like my hair just came to life. My curls are soft, they hold their shape, and lasted for like 3 days even after sleeping on them. My only disappointment is that when they arrived my shampoo bottle had been leaking all over the box. I guess the lid was not fastened all the way on, and so all my bottles were a little sticky and covered in shampoo. But with a quick rinse off everything was fine. OMGOSH, why couldn't I have discovered this stuff a long time ago! This is a really nice and inexpensive styling product for us folks with curly hair! I use it at night after I shower and wash my hair. The next morning I spritz my hair with Love Me 5 in 1 Miracle Treatment, also from Lotta Body, then just pick out my curls a little and I'm ready to go…easy peasy! This is my go to products for super curl definition! It has a nice, light scent and it does not leave the hair feeling crunchy! I wash my wigs, or natural hair, apply this and braid it up and let it dry overnight. When I take it down, I have the most amazing, defined curls! I love it!vee.w

WOW! This is the most incredible hair product. I've been using Oribe Gold Lust shampoo, conditioner, and oil for years. I decided to try this because many of the reviews I read were positive. This cream does everything it says it does, but to the touch it feels like nothing is there- it's light as air, holds my curls in place, adds healthy shine, and makes my hair feel like silk to the touch. I'm obsessed with this product- my only regret is that I didn't find it sooner!LucyMunson

First of all this cream smells very nice. I don’t know if this just isn’t a fit for my hair type but it’s really kind of sticky and doesn’t give me much silky or sleekness. My hair is fine and naturally curly, also chemically treated and frizz prone. This kind of made my hair feel sticky and tangly and not silky at all when I blew it out, and I definitely got frizz later when I went out in the humidity. I like other Oribe products but this didn’t work for me or my hair. For the price I was really hoping it would be a knock out but I’ll go back to my other tried and true favorites 1) Olaplex #6 and 2) Kerastase Discipline smoothing cream. They work better and overall cost less.steelerkate

I finally gave up just looking at this and finally ordered without any expectations even reading the excellent reviews. I been using kerastase discipline for years and happy with it as it kept my thick curly hair straight for a week even in humidity just a few touch ups between washes. But wanted to try this because my friend swear by it and the oil as well. It is AMAZING!!!! Is very thick when put it on your hands but once you rubbed it became a cream easy to spread on the hair, the smell is citrusy to me but very light, once I put it on my damp hair I do a twist and clipped wait for maybe 20 minutes and start blow drying, just doing that my hair is soooo soft and shiny with a beautiful salon look but I do flat iron after and OMG the softness is even more and my dry/splits end just disappear! Hair looks super healthy, and no greasy at all no matter how much you use, hair looks naturally straight and very light to the touch.I’m obsessed with this cream it’s been very humid here in Canada and my hair stay the same as when I ironed. It is worth the price and is just a bit more than the discipline one so I think I will stick to this one as a get more benefits. Hope they start selling in the stores too. I have tried countless gels, mousse, creams, etc. over the years with no success. After trying Tresemme's Flawless Curls shampoo and conditioner I decided to try their hair cream and was so excited when I saw the results! I am biracial so I have thin hair, greasy roots, and dry ends with lots of frizz/kink! Once I started to use the defining hair cream after my showers I immediately saw a difference! Not only has it smoothed out my frizz, it has also brought out curls in places that I never knew could curl! I have always had flat hair on the top that curled near the bottom but now my curls start at my roots and they keep their shape for the entire day 🙂 The only downfall is that my hair is extra "crunchy" in some places if I use a lot of cream (which I do). Some people may like this and I don't necessarily mind it but it would be nice if it was either 100% crunchy or 100% soft, not just certain spots. Perhaps a different technique while styling would help with this. Either way, it is definitely worth a try on your hair journey 🙂JayB

I have long thick natural curly hair and I have used TRESemme shampoo and conditioner for years as it is salon quality and very reasonably priced. I was tickled pink to try this flawless curls defining cream! I get so much hair gel and hairspray build up in my hair and always have to use a detangler to get through my hair. With TRESemme defining cream I do not have to use a detangler. After washing my hair I only needed to put in a dime size amount of this cream in my hair for ease free brushing! This huge bottle will last a long time as it goes a long way! I love the soft coconut and avocado oil scent! My curls are more defined and intact. I would definitely recommend this product.ThriftySteph

The cream! Okay to start off it is not incredibly sticky like gel consistency, which is nice, doesn’t have a strong smell which is better. Now I have extra long hair that runs down my back and at this point is quite heavy to where my curl becomes a weird semi curl/wave(if that makes sense). I rarely ever have my hair natural because of this and end up straightening or curling the ends because of how unruly it is. So yes, I was skeptical at first, but willing to try it. On my first try, I used a little to just to get the ends because they are the only ones that actually do cooperate and then used the diffuser. Curls popped out nicely, didn’t put enough to go to the root much and that was my mistake(the one pictured, after a crazy day at park chasing kids around). On the following attempts, I used a good amount to cover my whole head then used the diffuser same way. And all I gotta say is that even my short baby hair made a curl, which NEVER happens! It usually sticks out like crazy but I did finish it off with the spray that helped a lot. Now the feel after it’s dry is not the crunchy wet look you would think. It’s actually soft, it dries out well without frizz. This is too long of a review so here it is; would I recommend it? Yes, I think it would work with individuals who have texture on their hair. Might not work on straight but then again I don’t know, so I can’t say. Try it out!laura.h
