Reviews:
I received this product free from brothers in exchange for my honest review. I love sewing for my kiddos and wanted something that could keep my hems clean. The easy threading system is a huge plus for me. I only do small projects at this point but I am really impressed with how professional my makes look. Looking forward to making baby clothes now for friends.DDuck
Worst machine ever, it makes me cry on a regular basis. I desperately wish I had returned it when I could have, but I stupidly thought I was the problem and just needed to learn. Ive watched all the videos and read all the articles and even joined a facebook group specifically for owners of this machine where many of them are just as miserable as I am. I just spent 2 hours trying to hem the sleeves on a tshirt. Just the sleeves. I managed to get one done, but this machine chewed holes in the other one so now im deciding if I will have a shirt with holes or remove the sleeve and cut a new one. This is the single most expensive thing I've ever bought myseld and its garbage. I cant get my money back and I don't know what to do with it so I keep trying to to use it and keep suffering through hours of fighting with it and rethreading over and over when I could hem stuff by hand faster and easier.Bea
I received this product for free from Brother in exchange for my honest opinion/review of the product. The looks of this machine I thought it was a serger and I couldn't figure out why it was not cutting the material but it is a cover stitch machine. There are so many different stitches you can do with this that it shows in the book, however it does not tell you what settings you need to put the thread/needle on to get that stitch. The basic 2 stitches that they do give you the setting information worked perfect and looks great. At first I could not get the material out/released and it would knot up under the needles inside the machine. I figured out that if you open the front cover and clip the thread that is in the looper the material will come out. The machine is sturdy and the instructions for threading the machine were very detailed. There are so many options to use this machine on….hems of tshirts, attaching lace, tape and elastic, hemming, belt loops etc. Great machine and can't wait to get some sewing done!burnsjs1984

Reviews:
I have used a serger for 30 years. I have never seen anything so difficult to impossible to thread. There have been much better sergers designed and built for years! Why not just improve upon one of the easy-to-thread versions? If you get it threaded, it seems like a solid little workhorse. This one is going back. I don't have time for poor engineering.miralomagirl

Reviews:
I give a 5 Star rating not because for the ease of use but for the possibilities the machine offers. With 14 different stitches, it will suit all my projects. The Singer Professional 5 Serger is just like jumping from the little league to the big one. The key word to really appreciate this machine is practice. The first challenge is threading. By chance there are excellent videos on the net for the book (I mean the printed copy include in the box) is really not enough. There is a CD (also include in the box) where you find more information about the threading of all the stitches this machine can execute, but because the pictures and drawings are of low resolution, it is difficult to get a good understanding. Once again one can find excellent videos on the net. This is something Singer should address in the future. To help me in threading for the different stitches, I add identification labels, look at the pictures. When instruction ask for threading the chain looper I know the thread follows the brown coded guide up to the chain looper which the one nearest me or the first on the left. I do dressmaking as a hobby, not for a living. The Professional 5 is my third Singer machine. My first is the rocking foot model (more than 100 years old), my second is the 348 model (more than 50 years old); they are both working perfectly. So, you can say that when buying a Singer machine, it is for life, and with a good maintenance program this is something your children will inherit and continue to use for many years. More I use it, easier it gets and more I appreciate it. It is a good buy.ttc_f4u
I love my Stylist™ 14SH764 Serger, so when it was time to purchase a Cover Stitch machine, I originally looked at dedicated machines offered by other brands, but I came back to Singer and decided to purchase this combo machine. I have been using it for the past 2 months and I love it! It is a solidly built machine that is surprisingly quiet and comes with lots of accessories! Threading of course, takes some practice but is really quite simple and I love having all the stitch options. The DVD workbook is fab, and I have printed and prepared a binder with stitch samples, something I highly recommend doing to really get to know your machine and take full advantage of all the things this machine can do! One criticism is that in the manual, it does not give instructions on how to remove the fabric when finishing up a run of cover stitch. As you cannot chain off as you would while serging, this was rather confounding for me until I did some research on-line. The manual addresses the inability to chain off, but is followed by a blank section without text so I suspect this is an error in the printed manual. Another is the location of the presser foot lifter is rather awkward to access as it is located on the right side. One feature that I love, is the auto tension dials. They give the ability to fine tune for fabric extremes, but for the most part I have rarely had to adjust them. Another is the cuttings collector…No more serger fallout! Originally my plan was to sell my other serger but as I use the serger and cover stitches so often on the same projects, I have held onto it as I've been using this machine as a dedicated cover stitch machine that offers a great backup serger. Couldn't be happier with my purchase!Kellie
I took this out of the box today, and the stitches look just like the pictures once the tension is adjusted for the fabric. This is my second serger and first coverstitch machine. I got my first serger in 1998 when I was about 12, and while I loved that machine, this one does a lot more. Because I had never owned a coverstitch machine before, and the machine came set up in triple coverstitch mode with the test muslin in place, I immediately realized that I had no idea how to correctly remove fabric during coverstitching. Once I figured that out and got the thread tails to pull to the wrong side, it was all downhill. From the reviews, it looks like the half the reviewers opened the box and freaked out, and the other half love the machine. To the first-time serger owner, don't be scared. You didn't buy "the wrong machine." This thing looks significantly sturdier than the serger I got in 1998, and even that one survived my 12-year-old antics. It's a bit a of a contraption, as are all sergers. But once you set it up, it demands very little finesse on your part. For example, while I can make a rolled hem with a traditional machine, I have to get the fabric fed into the rolled him foot "just so" and then really babysit that edge to keep it rolling correctly–whereas this machine pretty much just does it. It can allow someone without very trained hands to get really nice looking results. If you know enough to even want the features that this serger has over $200 models, then it's NOT "too much machine." You've got this.

This is my favorite home overlock/pearling machine. Works so smoothly and has amazing adjustments for different stitches and tension for all sorts of fabrics and proper seam finishes. My machine arrived fast and in beautiful working condition. The price I got it for on sewing machine plus was a steal! Highly recommendAnthony A
Great serger. Powerful, quieter than others I've owned, and very smooth stitching. The manual could be written better with more detail on stitch settings, uses, etc. But overall I think it's a super value for the price. Shipment was delayed by a couple of weeks due to it being back ordered (and this wasn't indicated on the site at time of purchase, but it wasn't too bad a delay.Mary L
I recently purchased this serger. It arrived promptly and I could not be more pleased. However, I did not receive the eight cones of threads as was advertised. The guide that came with the machine allows for easy threading and the stitching looks great. It operates quietly.Odette O

First let me say I have NOT used it yet. When I do I know I won't be able to edit the review however here goes….Initially I was going to buy a cheaper version from a big box store based on price then decided to get it from QVC's sister network but missed out because it sold out. My last resort was QVC where it was cheaper and the easy pay was cheaper too. Delivery today was relatively quick but I'm a little concerned about if the unit may have been damaged in shipping the box was shipped inside a huge box that the ouside packing tape had started to split and the box was not sealed tightly. In the inside it was packed with one strip of inflated plastic bags. When I opened the box it was not what I expected. I expected it to have color pictures on the outside like it might have in a retail store, it didn't. Then some of the Styrofoam was cracked on top and one of the pre threaded spools was off and loose in the box and plastic wheel thingy was off and embedded in the side of the box. QVC if you're going to ship in such a large box fill it tightly with the inflated bags so the serger box does not move around inside. Wish me luck that its not damaged and will have to be returned. If so I can't exchange because its sold out now. I don't know why but affordable sewing machines and sergers are as hard to find as toilet paper right now.NettaBoo2020
If you are an experienced sewist, then this is a pretty good machine. Do I like it now? Yes. Did I like it at first? No! I’ve been sewing all my adult life, so I figured it out, but it is quite difficult to thread when you decide to change threads from what comes with the machine, which is not as pictured (with 4 large cones). It has four small spools of color-coded thread to help you understand where all the threads go. Those ran out pretty quickly just practicing the overlock stitch, so I had to re-thread with cones of white thread that I purchased. My mistake was cutting colored threads and pulling them out—I recommend you leave them in and follow the thread pathway with your permanent thread and then cut and remove the colored ones. I finally had to go to you-tube for instructions to get it re-threaded as the instruction book was not as helpful as I’d like. Also, if you want to do a narrow satin stitch hem, you have to remove a needle and “stitch finger”, etc., which, again, is just a pain to do, but it does stitch up nicely once you figure it all out. So….if you’re a beginner, you might want to research sergers and go for something simpler. But if you’re experienced and want a pretty good machine at a great price, then give this one a try. I will say the Wal-mart delivery service was excellent.lollygirl
Waste of money! My machine broke after owning it for 7 months making a little girls dress seam with normal cotton fabric. When I tried to take a shop to repair it, one place quoted me more than the cost of the machine, and several places said they won’t touch this model because it’s made to break. I finally found a certified brother repair shop and they said it won’t be covered by a warranty. Several people at sewing/quilting shops have since told me this machine is made to break. Would not recommend for any reason. Will not be purchasing brother machines again.K Mar

Reviews:
This machine looks like it will be a interesting addition to my new adventure in sewing. This is my second time seeing a serger and my first time actually using one. I would suggest reading the manual before using it unless you already have experience using a Serger. It shows & helps you to see how to do different finishes along with the tension settings, fabric, type of needles, type of thread, length, differential ratio etc…. Appreciated by a beginner like me. Janome MOD-8933 Serger comes with a video to introduce you to threading this machine. The video can also be found on you tube. It looks like a old video, but educational and informative. It shows how to thread two different types of sergers. I personally haven’t tried threaded it myself yet. But do plan on doing so soon. I didn’t have to thread it to try it out because it comes threaded for you. This is a plus. It comes with four spools of thread and ready for a test run straight out of the box. I haven’t tried either one of the three stitch methods, rolled hem, etc…. As I stated before in so many words I am new to using a Serger. But I can see great projects ahead after getting over the fear of using it for the first time. It’s color coded to help with the threading process just as the video shows. I would suggest watching YouTube videos to see how to change the threads without having to rethread the machine. But it’s important to know how to do it yourself just in case the need comes. Its almost magical how it cuts & gives a professional hem all at one time. I just did test stitches on scrap fabric. Time will tell the quality of it, but I have no complaints thus far. Looking forward to learning to use it and find out the full potential of my new addition!blaquebeautie33

This serger is great. I love how easy it is to thread. I have always been afraid to thread a serger but this one is very easy to thread. The feet along the threaders and cutter work well to make a great seam. I like how easy this serger is to clean. I can clean this serger but do keep my yearly cleaner to a professional. This serger does not get the fabric clumped up or snagged, the fabric flows through smoothly.Jodi

Does a wonderful job, using either 4, 3, or 2 threads. The differential feed is a must have, since I use a large variety of fabrics. The rolled hem on chiffon is amazing. I bought this Brother 3234DT to replace my Bernette serger after 25 years. Absolutely love that the handle for lifting the presser foot is on the right hand of the machine and not in the back!!!Sandy51

Reviews:
I was using a brother serger that i always had problems with and finally started to research a new serger i always came back to this one. and so glad i did. this machine goes through the fabric like butter. the stitching is wonderful every time. i wish i had done this sooner and saved all that wasted time with the brother.bullseyeannie69
This would have been my 3rd serger. I started years ago with an elna, Then not very long ago with a necchi. Then bought the Juno 3434D at Hancocks yesterday for an outstanding price. All threaded basically the same way. I spent 4 hours on this serger and only accomplished 1 18" long line of serging until the threads broke. It was prethreaded but with abou the 5th stitch, they broke, I know I had it threaded properly because it did sew the 18" length. As long as there was no fabric in it, it would stitch the chain, put fabric in it broke. Also the description said "whispser quiet". EXTREMELY loud, vibrated all over the table. Do not recommend for anyone under any circumstances. It's going back today.lilove11
I bought this make and model after reading reviews. I needed a serger that had a reputation for being heavy-duty and able to cope with most fabrics, heavy or lightweight. The rolled overlook stitch is not as neat as the Bernina. However, the differential is excellent. Knowledge is needed on adjusting the lower and upper loopers to ensure there is no rolling over. If you are someone new to a serger, I strongly advise getting a serger with automatic threading and tension.gr8snoring

Reviews:
I am teaching myself to sew and whenever I do something, I do it 110% so I bought myself a serger having completed one sewing project to my name. I really enjoy this thing. I was pretty overwhelmed after I took it out of the box but after watching a few YouTube videos, I got the hang of it very quickly. I have seen 20 year old second-hand sergers go for $300 or more online and at yard sales, so I think for the money this works great. It’s so satisfying looking at your finished work on this thing. I can’t wait to play around more with it and make some new projects!!!SlothLife

This serger is amazing. I’m seriously in love with it. It comes prethreaded but the thread is cheap, full of lumps & breaks easily but it’s a great to help you figure out your machine and actually see the stitches. Threading it is a bit of a learning curve but once you get it it’s so easy. Troubleshooting it is easy too. It’s truly a beautiful machine, such a game changer for any sewing enthusiast.Chassidy
I’m an experienced seamstress who has used sergers/overlock machines before, and this machine is awful! I didn’t have access to a serger and needed to purchase one for a few projects. This is one of the only ones I could find in a store near me. I took the bad reviews with a grain of salt because sergers are finicky and don’t work unless they are properly threaded, but I should have listened to the poor reviews. The machine was actually pretty easy to thread but that’s where the pros start and end. It would stitch properly for maybe a few minutes and then the threads would unhook on the inside and the machine would stop stitching. I had to rethread the machine 10 times for one project. Even if I could get it to stitch the machine has a serious tension problem. It’s not even consistent. It will be serging perfectly fine and then the tension gets thrown off by itself and the fabric rolls over. I returned it the day after I bought it. I ended up buying the brother 1034d and I HIGHLY recommend it. It’s the same price and works perfectly.Suhad99
Horrible! I think it’s a knock-off.. lower looper dial doesn’t work. To get the 2 loopers to even remotely meet together at the edge of the fabric, upper looper has to be on 7 and lower on a 2.. that’s just crazy and even then they won’t meet together at the edge. The dial seem loose compared to the other dials. Like it isn’t clicking into gear so to speak. That’s just 1 issue.. there are many! As for the book on this machine, doesn’t even look like it’s the original book. The pictures are so black, you can’t even see what they’re pointing to. Words are missed spelled and broken English.. The cone spool holders are weird. I’ve have brother and singers and never seen cone holders like these nd they don’t even fit the spools properly… I am beyond frustrated! If you have this machine and like it, you got lucky bc the issues I’m having aren’t just preference type stuff. It’s stuff that totally ruins your sewingTiff

I love it! I sew with it about 20 hours every week and it is a great machine! Easy to thread and adjust. Not my first serger so didn't seem to be a learning curve for me. Brother still needs to improve their instructions book ! Shipping was so fast it was unbelievable! Thanks so much!hoorayrenee
I had my last serger for about 20 years but there were some fabrics it just couldn't handle the thickness. One example is when I was making zipper bags. I actually bought this machine from someone used and it appeared to have never been used. So far I can say that it has handled everything I have put under it and with beautiful stitches. I almost never have to change the setting like I did with my old machine. Threading is also not as complicated as with my old machine. I enjoy my brother products and have come to trust them. On a final note, I will say that I could not ever find the difference and this and the 1634 serger. I only got this one because of deal I got on it. They appear to be the same though.RunSewRescue

I Absolutely love this machine! Ill give a back story to how i got this one. First i always wanted a serger! So one day at joanns there was one half off at some door buster sale. I got that and a 250$ mannequin. The lady there told me that that one was the best selling and they have a great replacement or return policy if it breaks in less than a year. Well 6 months down the line the whole needle holder broke off and i tried to retun it to the store they said i had to contact the company they said they dont fix return or refund them even if its under a year. So i went to walmart and got one there. I know walmart has a great product replacement plan for products if you get it there. After another 3 months that one broke too walmart paid for a box and return for them to fix it. They said it was a manufacturers defect and it couldnt be fixed they refuned me. I did alot more looking and found this one. At the time about 3 years ago my mother got me this one i was saveing money for, for xmas. Its still going strong. I use this almost daily for my sewing company in Wisconsin dells I do cosplay and having this one is great for crazy fabrics like furs and heavy fabrics. It does great on silks and laces too Easy to thread. Easy to clean
I was so excited and looking forward to receiving my Brother ST4031HD Strong and Tough Serger until, upon unboxing the serger, I discovered THREE presser feet were missing…the pearl, piping and taping feet! I should have received everything included with this serger. This is not good, Brother. Give your customers what they paid in full for!Highly Disappointed
My machine was working completely fine for the first 2 weeks I had it. I bought the machine May 18th. Yesterday, I was sewing lightweight FLEECE and the machine got totally jammed, not only ruining my project, but I was unable to continue using the machine. All of the "Brother Certified" repair locations within 50 miles of me are either closed or have a 3-4 week turnaround time which I can absolutely not afford. I am having to go to a sewing repair place near me despite having a supposed 25 year warranty on my machine, and I have to pay $110 to get it fixed which is a third of the price I paid for the machine!! This machine is an entry level serger which I understand, but i have been doing simple sewing all on fleece which is not heavy weight at all. I should not be going through this, absolutely ridiculous. And of course I can't get in touch with an ACTUAL PERSON at Brother so that is extremely annoying as well. Don't waste your time or money on this machine or any other Brother product. This sucks.jayla

I got this machine about 3 months into my adventure of making clothes from knit fabrics and I am so glad I did! It worked right out of the box and I’ve not heard any issues with it, it’s fairly easy to thread and is simply to adjust. I definitely recommend to beginning sewers!Megan
I love this little machine! It worked straight out of the box and the included instruction manual is very clear and easy to understand. I have made two projects so far with no issues and am so glad I finally invested in a serger. For my needs, 2-3 threads is plenty and I can see myself getting years of use from this machine.Grace

I have used a serger for 30 years. I have never seen anything so difficult to impossible to thread. There have been much better sergers designed and built for years! Why not just improve upon one of the easy-to-thread versions? If you get it threaded, it seems like a solid little workhorse. This one is going back.

This is my first experience using an overlocker, although I've been sewing with my little ELNA Air Electronic for over 40 years and with a 1940s Singer for a number of years before that. Threading is intuitive and very easy. This machine is quiet compared to others. Good quality thread is essential. We needed particular colours for our project and used some thread easily available from a large well known outlet. After many practice runs doing a 3-Thread Rolled Hem that pulled off the material and/or puckered we decided to heed the warning by the lady at the Echidna and used good quality thread. The difference was amazing. It's quite a learning curve with so many possible adjustments to tensions, lengths, foot pressure plus plus. But slowly does it. The experience of buying the Juki overlocker from Echidna was good. Both ladies in the shop were extra helpful. All together a positive experience.Gregory
This machine is fantastic! I've had 3 previous overlockers but none of them could compete with this one! It's quiet and smooth running and the stitch results are perfect! Air-threading is a brilliant feature and saves a lot of frustration! There's an automatic needle threader too for both needles. Juki seem to think of everything with a range of 15 different stitches, sufficient for any item you may want to make. I would thoroughly recommend this machine for the professional finish to your garments!Lesley M

I am new to overlockers but this is easy to thread and seems to stitch beautifullyAnonymous
This is the first overlocker machine I have ever purchased and have really enjoyed the great finish it gives to my makes. Have always felt a bit daunted by overlockers especially reading comments about threading… this overlocker takes all those concerns away. I am still in the learning process with all it can do and I am enjoying the process. So thank you Sewing Studio for the service provided.Anonymous

This is a great little machine, only received mine 24 hours ago, was really nervous about buying online but the machine came fully threaded and it was easy to see how to thread it. There are lots of youtube clips made by Juki that have lots of detail on this machine. Was also surprised how ‘solid’ this machine feels, what I mean by this is it doesn’t feel cheap at all. When in operation it is also very quiet.
My machine is SO picky! I make clothing and bought this to give my knits a professional finish. use high quality fabrics and maxilock threads. This machine hates certain threads, last time it hated the purple, today its the off white. INSANE! I spent 3 hours trying to get my machine to accept white wooly nylon instead of the black.. nope…but if I changed them out again., it sewn fine with the black. I see no issues with the threads 🙁 I'm so over this machine. DO NOT BUY!Megan
