Best Shampoo For Very Oily Hair (2024 Update)

So I have very hard, chlorinated water in my apartment and my hair is platinum blonde. I started noticing that my hair was getting this ugly yellow tone to it and purple shampoo was not helping (I use Matrix.) I also recently started using a toning mask (Pravana.) Although those seemed to help, it would be short lived because on the days I'd wash with a moisturizing shampoo, I was noticing the yellow tones again. I went into Ulta and asked the sales associate which shampoo would be good for hard water, and she recommended this or Living Proof. I decided to go with this because it was not as expensive, and you get more product than the Living Proof kit. I have only washed with this once but let me tell you my hair looks so much BRIGHTER, and way less yellow! It also left my hair soft, clean and refreshed. My scalp feels amazing. I will definitely be purchasing this on a regular basis to keep my blonde clean and free from the chlorine that's in my apartment's water!Ashley

I brought this on a trip to Phoenix, AZ to use after swimming to remove chlorine. I have bleached hair (Asian dark brunette to blonde/grey) and did not want to risk my bleached hair turning green. This product worked fantastically and was not overly drying. I did use a conditioner after shampooing though. I just bought the shampoo and conditioner and it is soooo good! It smells great and leaves my hair so soft. I have thick and frizzy straight hair and I’ve been looking forever for a shampoo and conditioner that help with the frizz. I use to buy the "Hairitage" products because they were good on my hair and scalp. My hair was still dry even when skipping a day or two. I bought these shampoo and conditioner "Hair Food" and I have to say… I'm impressed. My hair is smooth, it's not frizzy (even with the humid air), and it smells so good! I woke up with non-crazy hair. I feel like I don't need to wash my hair the next day and my scalp doesnt feel itchy dry! I've had probelms in the past of my hair falling out, itchy dry scalp, and buying what I think would work. It's actually my son, who's 14, who heard about it and since I know he's struggling with his curly, somewhat dry hair and scalp, I wanted to let him try it. He loves it! A few months back I purchased this clarifying shampoo. I am pretty pleased with it, it does what it says. I get build up from styling products and this helps remove that. I picked up this shampoo because I live in an apartment and my shower has a lot of hard water and minerals that come from the pipes. I was very hopeful this shampoo would help to remove all that mineral and hard water buildup, which it did. however if you are going to use this, use a moisturizing mask afterwards because this will dry out your hair and make it tangly and unmanageable. Also only use this 1-2x monthly to avoid severely dehydrating your hair. This is an inexpensive product compared to other hard water or detox shampoos, but i have noticed the pricier options hydrate your hair a bit more while washing with them. This shampoo SAVED my hair. I’ve been using Native shampoo conditioner for about 6 months and I noticed my scalp start to have so much dandruff. It was REALLY bad. My hit also seemed really oily pretty quickly. At this point, it felt like I just couldn’t get it out no matter how long I rinsed. There was just lots of build up. This shampoo literally saved my hair. After one wash, it felt significantly better and actually clean. I honestly picked this because it was the cheapest clarifier I could find with a good amount of fl oz. I was comparing to other brands. This clarifier is very good and I am glad I picked it up. It does exactly what it’s supposed to do. This product will also last long since we should not be clarifying our hair often. I have curly hair with a kinky texture. The directions says to use a dime-quarter size amount and I would stick by that. I used a little more than quarter size and my hair/scalp was clean fast. I had such high hopes for this brand, and especially the shampoo. I love the way the bottle looks it's so cute in the blush color, and I've heard great things from so many people about that they love the shampoo. I hate it. I need a clarifying shampoo because once a week I put a ton of oil, and sometimes hair masks as well, on my hair. I'm trying to regrow my hair, a little bit over a year ago I was completely bald, so I use mostly biotin and Castor oils. This shampoo did not wash the oil out of my hair at all! I was worried after shampoo because I didn't feel that squeaky clean feeling I expect from a clarifying shampoo, but I kept going thinking that maybe it was just more moisturizing than others. Nope. I got out of the shower, blow dried my hair, and it looks like I still have a ton of oil in my hair, probably because I do. I really don't understand how this is a clarifying shampoo, I even shampoo twice in my shower too, that's my routine I always shampoo twice but especially when I have oil in my hair. My first order of business today will be returning this thing to Ulta and getting the Ouai Detox that I should have just splurged on in the first place. Then I need to rewash and blow dry my hair again, for the second time within 24 hours which is infuriating. Add to all of that the fact that this thing doesn't have any scent that I can smell. I expect my hair care products to be highly scented, I prefer musky non floral scents but regardless it should be scented. When I stick my nose in the bottle I can vaguely smell something, but when using it in the shower and after: nothing, smells like literally nothing. Usually, my head begins to itch after I wash my hair, but with this shampoo, there was no itch! So I was pleasantly surprised by that. I finished off my hair with the tea tree special conditioner. After I finished showering and dried my hair with a microfiber towel, I noticed no residue on my hair and it felt very clean! I couldn't see any flakes and my scalp wasn't itchy! Just from this, I am very impressed with this shampoo. To address the hair loss comments, I did not notice any significant hair loss when I used the shampoo. I am the type to shed a lot of hair as it is since I have thick hair. I also wash my hair about once a week, so I tend to lose a bit of hair because of that because stray hairs build up over that time. DISCLAIMER: tee tree can be poisonous in raw form. If you have allergies, do not use this. For people with psoriasis this will not be for you. Keep out of reach from pets as it is poisonous to cats and dogs even as a topical product. Anything with essential oil products can be potentially dangerous and I urge you to research before you buy! I really really love this product because wonderful smell. It is refreshing to my scalp. Makes my hair feel fabulous. However, I don't know why but it makes my hair have crazy static electricity! It took me a couple of months to figure out which Lange product was doing it and I finally narrowed it down to the peppermint products. It is the strangest thing. I have very fine, oily hair. I ran out of my Lange mint shampoo in the fall and we were in the middle of a move and having a baby that it slipped my mind to order some before I needed more. So I’m fairly new to L’Ange trying out all the products, and decided to go ahead and order this because I am trying to hair train. For the first time in my entire life, I’m washing my hair once a week! Tried the Degrease Shampoo because my hair is quite on the oily scale. Packaging is great and high quality bottle and tamper proof lid/foil. Upon first usage, I noticed a very floral, fruity, citrus-like scent. It smells great and reminds me of sorbet or candy. After rinsing off, the scent is much more subtle which is great that it doesnt overpower you. The shampoo so far has been great. It doesn't dry out your hair like other shampoos for oily hair and it keeps the hair soft and very clean. Glad I got to try it out and I like it!Stanley S.

I have thin, fine greasy hair and my daily exercise routine and having hard water does not help. I found this degrease shampoo online and it is the first shampoo that has helped my hair not be so greasy. It worked the first time I used it and it is still working well three months later. My hair is less greasy and fuller. Throughout the day, especially on a warm humid day my hair stays cleaner and the next morning my hair isn’t nearly as greasy s it used to be. Just bought my third bottle of this product online and I've finally been able to stop searching for a better one. I've tried so many shampoos over the years! Between oily scalp and product buildup, I never thought I could skip a day, but my baby fine hair was suffering for it. I honestly think most shampoos designed to remove oils and residue overstrip and create increased oil production (much like most acne medicines). It becomes a vicious cycle. This product works and does not dry out my hair and my scalp doesn't overproduce oils to make up for overdrying. I use a scalp massager brush to work the shampoo in good and it's very tingly and wakes me up! Being free to not shampoo every day helps even more. This shampoo has also substantially decreased the volume of hair loss I'd been previously experiencing. This is really not typical shampoo. It does not smell amazing and package is not very cool.. but still I keep re-purchasing it. All goodness that it relies on soap nut for lather, and it works great! Really bubbles enough and cleanses gently but well. No itchiness, no funny residue after it. This is oily hair shampoo which I got by mistake (normally choosing same brand’s dry hair shampoo). Even so, I didn’t feel any negative effect on my dry hair. Price is really good and it takes quite some time to finish a bottle. This is a great shampoo for when your hair is growing back from cancer or alopecia. It is all natural no chemicals whatsoever. It is very gentle yet cleans thoroughly. Tea tree is used to repel head lice. I buy this shampoo for my 3 girls to use during the school year. Prior to buying this product, at least one of my 3 girls would end up with lice within the first month of school. After using this product, we haven't had a single case of head lice in the house. They only need to use it once a week and it still protects them. It does have a strong scent, but its pleasant. I also feel like it leaves a tingly feeling on your scalp during use. It goes away after your hair is dry. With 4 girls in the house and 4 different hair types, this shampoo works for all without drying or weighing down. My hair was so frizzy, dry, and unmanageable that I was wearing a hat almost every day. Even worse, I was noticing more and larger clumps of hair coming out in the shower. I was VERY surprised at how well this works. The shampoo lathers generously, I found rubbing it in between my hands for a bit and then putting my hands through my hair was sufficient to produce enough foam for my medium long hair. The conditioner is a little less intuitive, it’s a bit harder to tell how much is enough but again, just moving the bar over my hair a few times turned out to be enough. Now the best part: my hair felt and looked great afterwards. Lighter somehow and very healthy, without the usual frizz. I will definitely keep using this duo. The only thing I might wish for is a slightly stronger scent. It is very neutral smelling in my opinion. I bought this shampoo on a whim when looking to change from my normal shampoo. I loved the lack of palm oil etc It's easy to use and produces a lot of lather easily! I use this everyday as that's just my normal hair care routine. I think it has improved it. With the liquid shampoo my hair was more difficult to work with and I swear I was losing more hair. I get more volume and my natural waves form a lot easier despite that not being the main reason I purchased it. I even gifted one to my mother, she loved it as well. I haven't used this product in a long time. I do remember it very clearly. I bought this at one of the discounted or liquidated stores. If I remember right it was either t.j. Maxx or Burlington. It is very Vivid in my imagination that I was trying to do everything to get rid of it. I know it stayed in my downstairs bathroom with a little bit left in the bottle. I hated the residue that it left on my hair and the lack of my hair feeling clean after using this. My ex-husband was very bad about using the last of a product once it got down to the bottom of it. Anyone who dyes their hair copper knows that copper pigmented hair dye will not stay onto the hair particle for long. A brand new copper color hair do will last about a week or two before it fades into a honey brown color, and eventually a yellow-brown color. With this in mind, there are products that will help to prolong the dye coloration and slow down the fade process, and I turn to Redken shampoo every time​ to get the job done whenever I need to prolong my copper dye. I use this along with the Redken conditioner Color Extend and shampoo three x a week, conditioner once a week, and my copper pigmented color will last about 2 months before it fades onto a honey brown and eventually to a yellowish brown by the 4 months mark. I have used St Clements Shampoo Bar for over a year now and have since then switched to Ethique conditioner as well. I hope to leave some helpful thoughts on this bar as I have gotten to know it well over the past year. PROS: The sustainability, the results, the smell- there are so many good things I can say about this product. I have pretty thin hair. I originally switched to this bar because the shampoo I purchased at the grocery store was causing my hair to fall out. I decided I wanted to go natural to eliminate the chances of that ever happening again. I originally purchased this bar on Amazon simply because of its natural ingredients- without knowing anything about the Ethique company itself. Once I tried the bar and learned more about the values of the company, I was hooked. This is currently the only shampoo bar I have tried and could see myself venturing into other shampoo bars from Ethique in the future, but either way I have definitely found a soap company I will stay with. The bar helps my hair feel lighter, has allowed me to go an extra day in between washes, and is just as easy to use as liquid shampoo (once you get the hang of it). I also appreciate their value on sustainability and being kind to the environment. After my initial order on Amazon, I have ordered directly from Ethique to receive a plastic-free shipment. That alone is 100% worth the few extra dollars for shipping. Plus, the free sample size product they give you usually equates to the cost of shipping anyways and is a great gateway to trying other products from Ethique. CONS: Product-wise I don't have many bad things to say about this bar, but I did dock one star for one main reason: lifetime. I love this bar so much that I don't mind paying more for Ethique products. I do not, however, agree that the price of this shampoo bar is comparable to a bottle of "normal" shampoo at the grocery store based on its lifetime. The month and half time average is based on the bars I used correctly. This also correlates to storage. I live in a pretty low humidity climate- its really dry here. I store my bar on soap saver pad on a metal-bar shower shelf and when I leave the shower I make sure to leave the shower doors open and the bathroom fan on for a while after I'm done. I find that the bar still remains really soft in between washes, and often breaks down while in use. This results in me going through the bar a lot quicker, since large clumps pull off the bar into my hair. I did not have this problem with the first few bars I used, but it has since been common in my past few purchases. If there are any recommendations from people who have experienced this on how to fix it, I would greatly appreciate it! Hair feels clean. I was using a now discontinued liquid Charcoal Shampoo from another company, which I was happy with. This is even better for my hair and scalp. I cannot use "cheap" or "supermarket" shampoo due to reaction to additives but am not having a reaction to St Clements because it is free of the toxic (to me ) preservatives in most shampoos. I chose this brand over a cheaper option at Priceline, because Ethique has a cleaner ingredient list while the other brands stocked contain nasty (to me ) ingredients and/or preservatives. My naturally poker straight hair is not artificially lifted by this shampoo bar and is very clean with four short strokes on my waist length hair. Only issue is trying to keep the bar dry, as bathroom often in use. If you have a busy bathroom, a face washer isn't going to keep the bar dry and the box will stay wet. Should be sorted soon as getting a free pink container with latest order. Thank you for not putting Aloe in everything, as I am allergic to it and appreciate Ethique adds ingredients because they are beneficial or essential to the formula, not because they are "trending" like some other brands do.Jen

I love this shampoo. It's meant for oily hair. I tried a "normal" hair shampoo and it convinced me to try this. I've been using it forever now and I love the effect it has. It makes my hair soft. I do still use a "normal" based hair conditioner (I think it's kookabar) for extra silk texture. I am a little annoyed because it's recebtly started to get really soft and slip between the grates of its rack. (Photo to follow) This has started in the past month roughly. I keep it away from the stream of water, uncovered to air dry. It seems to only affect this recipe since, as previously stated, I did try one "normal" sampler and a normal block. I've been looking for a restorative shampoo for my dry and very damaged hair after too many bleaching sessions. I tried Dercos Protein Shampoo from Vichy and found it effective to repair the poor condition of my hair. I didn't get any allergic reaction, it's very gentle to my scalp. This shampoo has a creamy texture, subtle scent (not too strong, not too overpowering) and helped to deeply re-hydrate my hair making them softer, smoother in touch, stronger and generally healthier. I noticed the improvement after the second wash and I was very pleased. There is no silicone and no parabens, the formula is very nourishing. My hairdresser recommended this shampoo as the front of my hair would go solid when I ran the straighteners over it due to a build up of hairspray that my shampoo wasn't washing out properly. After 1 wash my hair is back to normal and I can use my straighteners again. I have now done the 2nd wash in it, but will put it away and only use it after styling my hair with hairspray. Totally recommend this product, my whole head of hair feels so much nicer.Kazz79

Let me start of by saying I have oily hair and that I've tried ALOT of different brands claiming to help with oiliness. However this right here, this shampoo has been doing absoulete wonders for my hair! It leaves my hair feeling cleaned but doesn't strip my head. The only thing I would love was for a bigger bottle as the texture of this is gloopy and you get through it quite fast, but that's not too much of an issue as it deffo works. If you struggle with oily hair I 100% recommend this!! Also works really well with their nettle dry shampoo too.shannon.s

People that say they used this once or twice, you have to give the product time to balance your scalp. GIVE IT TIME. I mean do you use an acne line for one day and say it "doesn't work" because your skin isn't pristine the next day? I buy this product in store and love it, at first I thought it wasn't lathering enough and questioned that but I thought "by God I bought it I'm going to use it." Lol- well about a week after using it (daily use) I was pretty impressed that it was working. Give it a chance and don't believe any naysayers who review ANY product and bash it after one use. So admittedly I haven't had a lot of definable results. I got 2 sachets of the shampooing mask 2 in 1, and a small bottle of the shampoo with nettle, as a gift to try them out. Now with both products I tried to follow the instructions on the packages. To start off the small bottle of shampoo with nettle unfortunately wasn't really enough to do a while lot of anything to my hair. It didn't lather very well so 95% of my hair was completely untouched by the shampoo despite all my attempts to spread it out. I really dont think this was make for thick hair. Maybe it would work better for thin hair? Needless to say I didn't really feel any results after washing it out and when it dried I had to wash it all over again. Now i did get more results from the shampooing mask. That one at least by combining powder from both packets along with water did actually get most all of my hair. Now doing that mask in the shower was a pain in the butt! And was a bit of a mess. But I did see a little bit of difference in the oiliness of my hair. Not really a whole lot but I imagine longer usage would see better results. So overall I'm a little on the fence about both of these products. I'm not 100% if I would recommend this to my friends, family or followers. Honestly I just didn't get enough of this to give a accurate try.heavenly.m

I have dry, extremely thick, frizzy, somewhat curly hair. Additionally, we have very hard water. To put it truthfully, my hair is awful. I used Mastay, Use Me First clarifying shampoo for several years and it was like a miracle to me but it was discontinued. I am still looking for something as great as Use me First. I really like this green apple shampoo. It is not drying and my hair feels clean and fresh after using it. The drawback is the fragrance. It's so strong that I sometimes become nauseated by it. I have discontinued its use because of the strong smell. It's too bad because it really is a good shampoo for problem hair. fully, my hair is awful.Anna

I was looking for a really great clarifying shampoo to help with build up from dry shampoo. With the season changing, my scalp has been getting oily SUPER fast so I've been laying on the dry shampoo. I stumbled upon this and it is AMAZING. It really does a fantastic job at getting the build up off my scalp but not drying my hair out too much. My intial plan was to use the Fekkai Apple Cider shampoo once a week and something else the rest of the week. That didn't work out. I only used the Fekkai because nothing else made my hair look as good as the Fekkai. It smells great, makes your hair smell good too! Order off of Amazon because it's cheaper than Targwt!nanette.v

This shampoo is amazing! I have been using a different brand of tea tree shampoo for several years, but I needed a change, since I wasn't getting the same results I did years ago. I am so glad I decided to try the suave brand! Not only does this shampoo have tea tree oil in it, but it has hemp seed oil. The tea tree helps me with my dry scalp and prevents me from developing dandruff. The hemp seed oil helps with stimulating and maintaining hair growth. I love this shampoo since it gives my entire scalp a refreshing feeling. Since I have been using my hair is shiny, soft and silky. Best of all, it is tangle-free! I have also noticed I have lost a lot less hair since using this product. I love the natural ingredients. If you are looking for a new shampoo, give this a try!Marcey

I have had dry scalp for many years now and am constantly searching for different shampoos that will help me get rid of it. I've tried everything from expensive T-gels to almost every brand of dandruff shampoo out there. I have used Tea Tree oil shampoo before, and while it helped a little, wasn't very effective. By the second day after using it, the dandruff was back. This Suave Tea Tree and Hemp Seed Oil seems to be much better at helping with the dandruff. I have had much less white flakes even into the 3rd day after washing when I use this. One thing I have noticed however is that it tends to make my hair more frizzy and statically charged. I braid my hair after washing when it's wet, and then the day after I pull out the braids to have that nice wavy look to it. But with this shampoo, it makes my hair frizzy for the second day (which is good is you need more volume in your hair, otherwise, not so helpful), and by the third day, my hair is sticking to everything from the static charge. So while great for dandruff, I have to weigh in the frizziness and static to the review also. I would definitely recommend the product because of it's excellent job on dandruff despite the unfortunate side effects.rosepaw

I was so excited to try out Suave's new Revitalizing Tea Tree & Hemp Seed Oil Shampoo!! I've heard and read of all the great benefits of the two oils, but have yet to try either. I'm very picky about which products I use on my hair. As my hair is long, curly, frizzy, has some damage and just needs extra care. I wasn't sure how I would like Suave. Right away I noticed the scent, I love the smell, like mint! Not too strong, or light, just right. I did notice that the shampoo is not a thin, or as runny as some other's. Which is a good thing. It laters up and massages into my hair quite nicely. It also rinses out fast and easy, bonus. I love the fact this has tea tree oil in it, as it helps with various things. Such as dandruff, I don't suffer with dandruff, but it also provides antibacterial benefits, which help hair growth. It also has hemp seed oil, which has it all! Hemp seed oil contains many dietary nutrients, like vitamins, minerals, proteins, omega fatty acids, & more to support and help promote healthy hair. All of which I absolutely love and need right now with my hair. I just had it cut last month. Perfect time to take the best care of it I can, and providing it with both oils I feel will help my hair to become less frizzy, more voluminous, less damaged, and looking all around better. This is the only dandruff shampoo that I use and that really works. Have used it for years and would not use anything else. It may cost a little bit more than other shampoos but it is worth every penny. Kind and gentle and leaves hair feeling really clean. Thoroughly recommend this product.077_fuller
