20 Best Straightening Products For Black Hair (Feb 2023 Update)

I am 30 years old. 30! Never in my life have I managed to find the balance between silky and greasy hair. UNTIL NOW. No joke. My hair is thin, wavy (in a bad way), broken, frizzy, and prone to oil build up: so I do nothing and I look like Charlize Theron from Monster, or I do a minuscule amount of styling and look like Wormtongue from LOTR. Last night I wet my hands an applied a very small amount of this – pea sized – to half-dried (shoulder length) hair. It was sticky going in, but then I blow-dried the rest of the way with a round brush and OHMYGOD my hair has never been this silky in my life! All my broken ends were laying down flat and nothing was heavy or greasy like my hair usually is with this type of product. Then I went to sleep (because I'm a night showerer) and woke up the next morning with still silky hair and merely a few kinks here and there that ironed out in 90 seconds. I was late for work because I couldn't stop looking at my hair. I don't know what sorcery this stuff is BUT I'LL TAKE IT ALL!HJ

Wow I am impressed by this product. I read the discription and thought I would go ahead and give it a try. I am naturally dark brown, but I went blonde. Going blonde left me with dry brittle very damaged hair. Lately it has been rough trying to blow dry straight all the little fly aways that comes with damaged hair. I applied this product on my damp hair generously. It felt like a thick sticky cream while applying, and I was nervous that it was going to make my hair sticky and dry or crisp. I applied a generous amount to 4 sections of hair (about the size of a quarder from root to tip). After blow drying with a round coarse brush I was able to have straight hair that looked amazing and it felt smooth. I thought it looked exceptionally straight for the most part and I skipped hot ironing it flat because I thought doing so would eliminate the body that I had already going on with the round brush. It is now day 2 since using this product and wow… Normally my hair is a tangled mess because of all the bleaching. My hair looks AMAZING! It practically looks healthy looking, even though it is not. I have been using this for about a year now, at the suggestion of my hairdresser. My hair is frizzy-curly. I used to never be able to let my hair air dry or blow it dry without straightening it. Thanks to this stuff, I no longer have to worry! It has a fruity smell that helps me start my day off on a positive note. I just put it in my hair every time I get out of the shower. There are no guidelines anywhere, but my hair is shoulder-length (and fluffy), and I use about a quarter size amount in my palm. I rub it between my palms and then spread through my hair. One thing I've noticed is that if you let your hair air dry, it will harden in your hair. However, this is easily mitigated by either brushing your hair again or just running your fingers through your hair when it's dry (or close to dry). Whenever I get too cocky and think that my hair has just somehow magically changed, and I don't use this product for a day, I immediately remember and regret it! It only adds an extra 30 seconds or so to my day, and it has become a wonderful boost for my self esteem.A.B.

It smells nice but for me doesn't do that much. I like this brand though. This product is definitely a balm as in it does not help shape your hair. It does help to smooth frizz but if your hair gets wavy and frizzy in humidity like mine does, this product does not have much impact. I will use it up though. I am really impressed with this straightening comb. The design allows you to get pretty close to the root while keeping the heat away from your skin. The hair guides glide smoothly through the hair. I found this much easier to use than a flat iron and more effective than the heated brush. I love it! I have very thick curly hair. It usually takes me 1 1/2 hours to straighten it with a standard straight iron and this tool cut the time in half. Im usually fighting with a comb and having to lay the straightener down while I pick up the comb to comb it. Its a battle. This product solved my problem. The only drawback is my bangs are very short and it doesnt work with short hair. Will have to use old straightener till they grow out then into the recycling bin with the old. This flat iron heats up quickly and it's great you can control the temperature. I've used this in both the US and in Europe without any temperature issues. My only complaint so far is that I pinch my palm a lot so I have to keep reminding myself to hold the iron with my fingers and try to keep the rest of my hand away which is annoying since I want to hold the entire thing in my hand.wildash07

Bought this flat iron to replace the current one I had of the same brand. This one seems a little bit lighter and the cord is a little thinner, but still a great value for the price. I have to get used to where the buttons are on this handle because they are on the side versus the top and makes it a little difficult not to change the temperature or shut it off while usingRobin

I have the Ion Fusion 2.0. It is the worst straightener I've ever owned. I have thick, loosely wavy hair and even on full heat, 450 degrees, it still takes 4+ passes to get a small section remotely straight. I don't believe it actually gets up to 450. It also pulls my hair so badly, every third pass or so I have to stop and pull out hairs that are stuck in the plates – you can see in the picture how much hair I lost during one straightening session. It gets stuck midway through my hair even though I use a good heat spray AND I brush my hair thoroughly before straightening, plus again each section right before straightening. You can get better quality at the drugstore. I will never buy PYT hair products again and I'll be replacing this one ASAP.andrea.z

I love this straightener. I've been using it for more than 4 years. It doesn't burn my hair. Once I straighten my hair I don't have to touch up until I have washed my hair. I love that this can be used on wet or dry hair. I have very fine, blonde color treated hair and it can end up straw like and dehydrated, I just mist this product on and gently pull it through and it totally closes the cuticle and gets rid of all the extra frizz. Also love that it doesn’t make my hair stringy like most hair oils that are anti frizz would do. As someone who used to use straight apple cider vinegar to wash her hair the smell doesn’t bother me at all, but I prefer natural ingredients over chemical type smells any day.ohio1j

I have been desperate to make my hair lovely with the long absence of the awesome hairdressers… so thought I’d invest in some good products. I had high hopes for this de tangler. I have thick damaged hair and was hoping this may take away the frizz and smooth it out. My hair is definitely easier to brush, but it’s definitely not smooth and silky and doesn’t really feel much different to normal. The product smells really vinegary too which is a big put off. I am a licensed hair stylist & was certified in the Bio Ionic System. I love this product & have seen amazing results on clients hair. I can't agree more with the previous comment. If you get the relaxer on your scalp at all, the hair will break off at the scalp!! Never mind if you overlap the Bio on previously relaxed hair! I have seen it happen many times with people that think they can do it themselves with tragic results. This process involves tons of steps & should take a stylist up to 5 hours to complete on a client with a lot of hair & done properly. Just because this product is sold to the public doesn't mean it should be used by the public. Yes it is a lot of money to have it done by a professional, but its worth every penny & it will last for many months. This is a serious product & can have horrible results if any mistakes are made. I hardly write reviews but for this one i had to. I did alot of research on the best hair straightening formula to use after alot of hours of searching I finally decided on this one and boy am I glad I did. It was my first time doing this and i am so glad i didnt pay $200+ for something so simple that can be home done! You need about 3-4 hours of uninterrupted time. Follow the instructions and you will get beautiful straight hair. I was afraid it would burn my hair but its more fuller and softer then ever. Thank you for such a beautiful product! My hair stylist used this in the past on my hair but can no longer get it locally. Last year, we tried another product and it did not straighten my hair at all. We ended up doing a reverse perm. That worked, but not as well as the BioIonic and it did not last as long. I found this on ebay and purchased it for my latest straightening. Great results-almost too straight! Just beware, make sure you do not color or use any other chemicals on your hair about 10 days before you use this product. I colored my hair once before the straightening and the hair on the top of my head broke off. What a mess, nothing like having little hairs sticking straight up out the top of your head! Also, a lot of people said that the smell was only bad on the first step. I think the smell is horrible on both steps and for the next 72 hours when you can not wash it. May be very hard for those that are very sensitive to smell. Takes a couple of washings to no longer smell the formula. Oh…the cost to look good!bkmn4

At first I was a bit scared because of some reviews I had read.. but I got the product, and if you follow the rules straight, then the result is great! You need to be patient and dedicate this treatment at least 3 hours of one day to make it properly. If you follow the rules, and do not apply the product to your roots you should not get any burning feeling at all. Plus, as I said, you got to have enough time to make it in order for the product to make the effect desired.. And after the treatment, you may experience some changes in the color of you hair (a clearer hue), which honestly it happens with all kinds of permanent straightening treatments. Ive had a salon Brazilian blowout and an Aveda keratin treatment in the past. The Brazilian blowout was the best but the smell about killed me and made my eyes water. This product was similar to that. It has a bubblegum smell but strong. It did make my eyes water a bit but my hair is so smooth and beautiful that it was well worth it. I tend to shampoo my hair to frequently since I exercise everyday and sweat, but if it lasts even 6-8 weeks its worth it. Great price and great product.ellewoods99

It took me 3 hours to do my hair. I am now on my 6th hair wash since doing the treatment. I am happy to say that my hair is still straight! I also bought the shampoo and conditioner that went along with it. I have a couple spots where my hair is still wavy but other than that this is the only product so far that actually kept my hair straight for this long. When I cool dried the product it took sooooo long so I just used my fan and combed it out. And the smell burnt my throat and and chest. At first it smelled like bubblegum. So definatley recommend doing it in more than just your bathroom. (I had door and windows open at all times) So worth the 3 hours! Highly recommend!!berndtar

I had very high hopes for this product but it left me disappointed. It does not get the ends of your hair well and didn’t straighten my hair pretty much at all. After using this my hair looked the same as when I blow dried it…. poofy. If you have thick hair and high density (lots of hair on your head) like I do, save your money. This is THE WORST hair straightener I have ever used. I don’t understand all the good reviews and unfortunately, that is what I went off of when choosing a new straightener. When you squeeze it shut to go down a piece of hair, it doesn’t open back up by itself so you do one piece of hair, stop to open it back, do one piece of hair, stop to open it back, etc. it also has something on the end of the straightener on both sides that my hair gets stuck in. I used INOAR GHair and 1Ka Steel in Brazil and the results are way better. I think a damaged hair doesn't fit this product (I bought Mild). I have been dyed my hair. It's not weak but it's not 100% healthy. The Brazilian Semi perm gives a more natural effect and gives the hair a body (the contrary happened with Liscio), it treats the fiber. If the roots appear, it doesn't get weird. Its not permanent (2 months) but smells good and treats thee hair. Liscio also smells LIKE HELL!!! Your boyfriend is gonna hate too!!Ana

Thank you to everyone's' reviews, really helped me in deciding to do it myself. Now I want to help someone else. I have relaxed hair, was growing it out since last year when I started my research on Japaneses Straightening. I had emailed a salon in New York who had advised that I would have to leave my hair for a year with out further relaxers, then have a keratin treatment then after three months have the JS. I live in London, so no salon that offers the treatment would do it on my hair, specially with relaxed ends. They hear Black in your race and panic. Even when you tell them of your reserach from American salons doing "afro hair". So I started to look into doing it myself. Upon further research Liscio is thought to be one of the best and oldest brands. Things to add, knowing the basic steps of the Liscio; are- get the root softer to help, the protection cream or the Liscio Zero for your relaxed ends, or damaged hair the Liscio straightening IS NOT TO GO ON. or it will break off. Some parts where we (friend helped) were not careful did break off, no biggie to me though. – 24 hours before doing the treatment, do a Aphogee two step protein treatment, (I ordered it and it came after so I used it the first wash after the Liscio) no adverse affects, actually helped it. Hair is silky. – Irony is you do a chemical treatment and need to go green to take care of it hahaha. So… – You don't have to shell out for their expensive add ons if you don't want to, but get sulfate free, paraben free etc, shampoos and deep conditioning hair mask, and styling products (not a must but avoid too much silica). for example I use Pureology or Milk_Shake (used for first wash). They are for Coloured hair but the benefits in it is good for thermal Reconditioned hair too such as uv protection and its vegan (Pureology is) but performs at salon quality. (I don't have coloured hair but I like vegan or semi vegan products that understands hair, not just pure for the hell of it.) – Oh and the liscio serum thing, I was panicking that I didn't get it but it performs the same as MoroccanOil brand Argan oil. Put two parts water to 5 pumps of the oil in a spray bottle and shake. Use with first blow dry when you wash out the first step of straightening. and the last step. Or another serum like it but do use with water. The YouTube Milbon salon steps video she uses the serum with part water. Hair was straight on first wash and love it!Ferreneik
