Best Co Wash For Low Porosity Hair (2025 Update)

so this is the second jar for me and it lasts a while. I only use it every now and then maybe one or two times a week. the consistency is like a conditioner and it definitely doesn't lather (no wonder since it's not a shampoo) BUT, co wash is the wrong word for this product if you ask me. co wash is washing with conditioner only. This co wash really cleans the hair but also tends to make my hair feel a LITTLE dry. so I use my regular conditioner afterwards! make sure to rinse it really good so it doesn't leaves residue (never happened to me) in your hair. my scalp gets really clean and my hair too, the hair feels clean but a little different than after using shampoo. I don't know if I really love this product but for the price it is ok and I definitely like it.. if your hair is really dry you should be careful with using it every day or every wash. make sure you use a conditioner afterwards, I don't think you can skip that part with this product. maybe I'd call it creamy non foaming shampoo instead of cleansing conditioner.squish85

I needed something to nourish my locks, clean my scalp, but also keep the texture I have with my hair. I use this in combination with the Curl Smith brand of conditioner, and together they help make my hair look shiny and healthy again. This cowash is wonderful. The smell is light and pleasant. It does not smell like traditional coconut scented products that are usually overwhelming and super sweet smelling. Which is great for people (like me) that dislike and would not purchase anything coconut scented. It is perfect for using daily especially for those who worry about dryness on their scalp and or hair; it keeps it quite moisturized. It is easy to apply and you don't need to use too much. It doesn't lather like a shampoo however it gets the job done so long as you do not have a tremendous amount of build up or tons of product in your hair. It's great to use to after a workout or any activity where you don't need a squeaky clean feeling (especially if it's your second wash of the day). The package size is quite large and it lasts quite a while. However, I removed 1 star only because of the packing format. It only comes in a tub so it's not as shower friendly to use one handed like a bottle and probably causes most to use more than needed scooping some out, however don't let that deter you because it's a really a fantastic product. Just take a little scoop out and close the container and you're all set! If you really dislike the tub, you can also funnel it into another shampoo like bottle. This is one of my favorite brands of shampoo. It aroma is very pleasant and the lather is always up to par. I started using this brand after a friend referred it to me and I haven't used another since. Even though my hair is bleached, I'm an every day wash person. I've only ever been able to skip shampoo for 1 day before getting gross. The only other co-wash I've tried is the TGIN one (which was less cleansing than this but also nice- maybe a good fit for folks who find this too harsh). For me, this hits a nice balance between cleansing and keeping my hair in good shape. It definitely strips my hair MUCH less than a traditional shampoo, but it cleanses more than washing with a conditioner typically would. I've been able to use this instead of shampoo for 2 days in a row without feeling like my scalp is gross. I use ~1-2 quarter sized pumps in my shoulder length hair. IMO that's more a bit more product than I "should" need to use at this price point, but nothing wild. I condition after I use this as well. My hair is weighed down pretty easily and this didn't weigh me down. For context: my hair is 2B, bleached (high porosity), and dense with fine/fragile individual strands.Claire

Relevant info: I have shoulder length, extremely fine (like, hairdressers comment on how fine it is), 2C/3A hair. I decided to try this on a whim because I love curlsmith's moisture memory reactor so much. I haven't had much luck with cowashing in the past, because my hair is so fine it gets weighed down and buildup very easily. But boy am I glad I tried it! I've used it 3 times so far (every other day) and I haven't had to use my regular shampoo/conditioner at all. I tried it originally without using styling products after, because I wanted to try it on its own, and honestly I expected it to weigh my hair down as other cowash products have. I was shocked after it dried (I always air dry) that my hair was extremely soft and fluffy. No product left behind, no clumps, nothing. It was actually a bit too fluffy for my taste, so the next time I used the moisture memory reactor afterwards (as a leave in) and my hair was as perfect as it ever has been. Not weighed down, but not frizzy or fluffy, nice waves/curls, soft and touchable, not crunchy. Love it. It didnt lather well (which makes sense as a thick cream consistency) but it was hard to really know if it was getting evenly distributed. I have been wearing a kinky pony tail natural or weave and edges out all summer, so I use this leave in conditioner with water to do a slick pony and make my pony kinky but not dry and it’s so good on my hair! Can we talk about how this smells amazing!!! I love how soft my hair is and it does leave residue at all! Most black girls wouldn’t think a product like this would work on there hair but girls if your natural it will! I have been using this leave-in for years, through dreadlocs, twistouts, Wash-n-Gos, and blow drying. It consistently provides the best results. Especially for blow drying with a Revair! You can't put oil on your hair before using that blow dryer, and every other leave-in causes that to leave my hair dried out. But also especially for WnGs, because the curls! Especially if you put this on right after washing out regular conditioner while hair is soaking wet and then put on a plastic cap before getting out of the shower. Your curls will be amazing. I can't even do a WnG without using this product before any custard/gel. I've experimented with many, many other leave-ins, but keep coming back to this one. The only reason I even try to find any others is that I have a mild allergy to one of the ingredients in this. It makes my eyes a little itchy/watery. But you just can't beat this for moisture, so I stick with it anyway. I'm giving this two stars because I often have trouble finding hair products that won't cause an allergic reaction- this product doesn't seem to have any dyes or fragrances that irritate me, so that's a plus. Typically, when I used regular shampoo and conditioner, it looks fine the first day, and a little oily but not horrible on the second day. With this product, it seemed okay the first day of the first wash, but since then my hair has been getting more and more oily. It has been two weeks of washing my hair with this product every other day. This morning, I washed my hair and blow dried it without any additional products and it STILL looked greasy. In the past, I've tried co-washing with different products, I've even tried the baking soda and acv combo, but either my hair never felt clean or it felt dry or my scalp felt dry or it felt like a grease trap. I have a naturally oily, sensitive scalp and fine hair. For years I'd given up and just used the traditional shampoo and conditioner products out there. So one day I'd use a volumizing shampoo and conditioner, a couple of days later I'd have to use t-gel, then I'd have to use a moisturizing set, then I'd have to clarify every so many washes. I was constantly chasing a happy scalp and clean hair. I got a sample of this in a buy $$ and get a bag free deal, and I waited to try it. Surely it would weigh down my fine hair and make my scalp even oilier. Finally I tried it out of curiosity and I dried my hair and immediately noticed it felt clean and soft. Throughout the day I'd check it in the bathroom, and it was still clean– I didn't have the greasy roots I was expecting to see. I used the sample until I was almost finished, and decided to make the plunge and buy the big bottle. I waited too long and had to wait a couple of days for my order to arrive so in that time I had to use traditional shampoo and conditioner and started the whole scalp hair battle again. My order came in last night and I was so happy and relieved to use this when I got ready this morning. I seriously took all the shampoo and conditioner out of my bathroom and put it in a donate box, I can't go back to those products after this. If you're on the fence, try the sample size, it seems like a big purchase until you calculate what you're not spending on two or three different types of shampoo and conditioner.TabK

I got a sample of this last year but just used it recently. I love it! I especially like that you don't have to use a conditioner also. It has a very light scent that smells really good. I like this better than Wen. Sorry Wen people. You don't have to use as much either. I have scalp psoriasis and my hair is extremely dry. I do put a bit of leave in conditioner on the ends though. I've never used a co-wash before this one, and it is WONDERFUL. I don't use it every time I shower, but when I do it leaves my hair so soft and hydrated. I have thick, dry, easily damaged hair and this product is fantastic for it. My only note: be sure you read the directions! I love this stuff. I have been using it for a while but would use regular shampoo once every 10 days or so. Then, for the last couple months I did not do any regular shampoo just this cowash. My hair was so good- less frizz, more shine, not dry and fluffy. My hair is wavy. Then as an experiment I washed with shampoo yesterday. I wish I hadn't! I had to use extra product to try to get it from looking too fluffy and straw like. I won't go back to shampoo. I am so frugal I hate to spend the extra money but I really love this. I wasn't sure how this item would perform compared to my expensive salon brand, but I must say that I love this product. It works as a cleanser and conditioner in one bottle, which is such a time saver when I don't have time to wash and condition separately. It leaves me with soft, detangled hair and I don't feel like I have a heavy film on it. The price is very reasonable and the scent is fresh and light, not overly-perfumed like some other brands. I have used this product consistently for over 5 years now. I have tried other things from time to time and every single time I end up coming back to this because nothing else is as good. It's so much gentler than shampoo but not heavy or greasy. I don't need to use conditioner or styling product with it and my hair comes out great. I am also sensitive to strong smells and this just has a light coconut smell that isn't overpowering and isn't too strong smelling on your hair once it dries. I have gone back and forth between using shampoo or a cleansing conditioner/co-wash for many years ever since I started wearing my hair in it’s naturally textured (wavy) state. I honestly try and use shampoo, but then after a while I find it dries out my hair. And, then I would switch to co-washes because they aren’t drying to my hair at all. However, I will admit, based upon the formulation of certain co-washes and the products that I would use in my hair, they honestly didn’t cleanse my hair and scalp as well as they should have, and I would incur buildup as a result s d my hair would be noticeably greasy and limp afterwards. I honestly on my haircare journey haven’t found a shampoo that I absolutely consider a must-have in my regimen all year round, as I am still on the hunt for such, idle it even exists, so this is why, I decided to go back to co-washing my hair but with an actual cleansing conditioner. Now, when I first tried this product, I wasn’t super wowed by it and stopped using it. However, I decided to give it another try, because I have switched up haircare products tons of times in my hair, so honestly some haircare products are best removed with a shampoo based upon their formulation. However, I now currently use Innersense Organic Beauty’s I Create Hold as my current styler of choice and i can say that it is 100% water soluble and I can easily remove all of it from my hair with this cowash without any issues. Now, this product has a tropical coconut type of scent, which I am okay with, as it’s nothing overpowering. It gets my hair and scalp completely clean, and it leaves my hair in a very manageable state afterwards. My only slight con about this product is that I wish it had a bit more slip to it, which is the only reason why I rated it 4 stars. But, outside of that, I no have major complaints about this product at all and most surely will buy it again. This is a product that anyone can use on their hair, whether they have straight or textured hair. It does not matter. Cow ashes and cleansing conditioners can be used on all hairtypes and hair textures. But, you must understand that based upon the ingredients in your products, cowashes will have a tough time removing ingredients that truly need a shampoo to fully remove such from ones hair and scalp. If you use a product with a silicone or silicones or heavy butters, and/or lots of oils then you need a shampoo to thoroughly remove such from your hair and scalp. Oh, and something that’s very important- when using a cleansing conditioner/cowash to cleanse ones hair with, after applying it to your head and massaging it around for a while let it set within your hair for at least 5 minutes (or even a bit longer) thereafter, before rinsing it out.sybil.w

This is my first cowash product, and I love it! It has a nice smell and feels lovely and soft in my hair. My scalp has been a bit dry over the past year (most likely from being stuck inside with the AC and dry, stale air so much during the pandemic), and the week I used this in place of my typical shampoo + conditioner routine, my scalp wasn't itchy or irritated at all. The other reviewers raved about this product, but I don't know that I'm as sold on this cleansing conditioner. The first time I washed it my hair with it, I was in love. My wild mane was easy to brush, felt nourished, and smelled amazing when I got out of the shower. I also felt clean. While my hair is wavy and a bit coarse, somehow, I'm also cursed with oiliness. Perhaps due to that, I've found that if I wash my hair with this product twice in a row, my hair looks greasy and unkempt. Since figuring that out, I've been alternating between this cleaning conditioner and a regular shampoo/conditioner every other day to even things out. This product works great for my hair. I'm transitioning from permed to natural hair and had read a lot of positive reviews so decided to give it a try. My roots are natural(about 4in) but I haven't cut my below shoulder length. This products works great but I'd recommend you having a leave in conditioner to go along with it. If you have length, it's best to section your hair and wash it in sections to minimize tangle. Her products bring out your natural wave or curl pattern. Be patient with your hair & use as much conditioner as you can afford and use it often. Seriously the more the better….I have since purchased other products(leave in conditioners(the almond smells so good) and the hair pudding. Renpure cleansing conditioner is my regular hair cleanser. I purchased this bottle when the store was out of the Rosemary and Mint – my normal scent. I was VERY impressed with the scent. I'm used to the herby smell of the Rosemary and Mint, but this Bamboo version was just to die for! I have curly hair, so I don't wash it every day, and when I do wash it I try to stay away from sulfates and other chemicals that will make my hair dry or frizzy. This cleansing conditioner has no sulfates, and the one silicone it contains (amodimethicone) is soluble by washing with cocomidopropylbetaine, the surfactant in this cleansing conditioner. That being said, sometimes it does build up in my hair, but it dissolves very easily with a good scrub and a regular shampoo. If you follow the instructions, it recommends using a regular shampoo every once in a while anyway. This is an ideal cleanser for my hair, and I even use it as a leave-in conditioner with great results. It keeps my hair healthy and doesn't weigh down my curls. I recommend it to all my friends who have curly hair or wash their hair every day! If you tried the Rosemary and Mint but didn't like the smell, go for this one!melanie.s

Love this! I was skeptical because I tried WEN in the past and didn’t feel like my hair was clean. Renpure is wonderful! I have long fine hair and a chronic skin condition on my scalp. I need to wash my hair daily to keep my scalp from itching and becoming more inflamed. I also need a natural shampoo due to allergies. Daily cleansing is necessary for me, but also dries out my hair and scalp. Renpure vanilla mint cleansing conditioner is the answer! My hair feels clean, smells great, looks shinier and healthier, and is so soft. Plus, my scalp doesn’t feel as dried out and itchy as it does with other products. Before finding this cleansing conditioner, I alternated between multiple prescription, medicated, and specialty shampoos and conditioners. Now, I use Renpure vanilla mint almost exclusively (probably 5-6 days a week and free and clear shampoo and conditioner the other day or two). I just wish they carried it in my local store. It would also be nice if they offered a larger size so I wouldn’t have to order so often. I also use Renpure body wash and lotions. So far, I haven’t used any of their products that I don’t like! They are natural with no harmful ingredients, work well, and are much cheaper than other comparable brands. I will definitely continue using and recommending them.Stacy

Cleansing conditioners like Wen are more popular now, thank goodness. This is the ONLY product that made my scalp feel clean and fresh! And I HAD scalp problems, sadly. Tried high end shampoos, charcoal, tea tree, vinegar, all natural products… This is the only product that helped consistently. Gets rid of build-up, but is also gentle on my hair. So easy to detangle after using this. Bonus– also removes underarm deodorant build-up! (Though I've switched to Clarins deodorant, so I don't get nearly as much build-up as when I was using drug store brands.) I used this for several years, and now it's the only product I use on my toddler's long hair too. Getting harder to find though.Marie

i never write reviews for anything but holy cow this quite literally saved my hair. for reference i have a mix of 2b, 2c, and 3a hair due to years of coloring and heat damage. i have quite a bit of hair and it's thick, low porosity, and protein sensitive. no matter what "hydrating" products i've used my hair has always felt dry and never absorbed anything i put in it. i got my colored red hair retouched recently and not quite sure what my stylist used to treat my hair this time around but it came out sooo dry and brittle. after some research and finding out more about my hair type i decided to try this plus the conditioner that goes with it. and wow is all i have to say. i've never had hair this soft straight out the shower and it's so easy to comb through now. curls i thought were lost forever returned. i'm also noticing less hair fallout probably from my hair not being so tangled anymore. this shampoo cleanses really well without stripping my hair and it just overall transformed the look and feel of my hair. 10/10 recommend if you have a similar hair typepia

This SheaMoisture High Porosity Moisture Replenish Shampoo is GREAT. I really like the scent and how clean my hair is after use. It is not watered down nor is it very thin, it comes out smoothly and I only need a small amount to thoroughly clean my hair. I like the way my hair feels afterwards and the very nice smell. I use SheaMoisture products and this too shall be added to my normal hair care routine and will replace my current shampoo. It lathers extremely well and rinses out even better…my hair is softer and easily styled after using the shampoo. I always buy SheaMoisture products for my girls. These products are made of high quality ingredients and safe for their hair. This particular shampoo is wonderful for hair that has brittle ends. The shea butter, jojoba and mongongo moisturize and revitalize hair. It’s also great for color treated hair! It smells wonderful so your hair will smell wonderful. This shampoo is sulfate free. I was really excited to try the Honest Conditioner in the Sweet Almond scent. Almond is my favorite, both in cooking and in body products. I especially like other Honest Company products I've tried (hair detangler, and diaper cream, for example) because they use naturally derived ingredients and are made without silicones, parabens, dyes, synthetic fragrances, formaldehyde or phthalates. I'll easily pay more for a product when I know it's not loaded with chemicals. So, needless to say, I was pretty psyched to try the Honest Conditioner in the Sweet Almond scent. Of course, as soon as it arrived, I opened it up to give it a good sniff. The scent is soft, not overwhelming, which is important for my little one's winter-sensitive skin. My 16 month-old daughter has always had long hair. I recently gave her her first haircut, just to even up the length. For months I had struggled to keep tangles away, which is really hard with a 100 mph toddler running around. Our routine had previously included using a typical baby shampoo and then using detangler after her bath. That required me to chase her down after the bath to spray the detangler on…which, right before bed time, seemed counter intuitive, since I don't like to put her to bed with wet hair. This extra step was necessary, even though more time-intensive and exhausting for me! I hadn't considered using a conditioner on her hair before receiving the Honest Conditioner and I'm glad that I started using it. Her hair is definitely softer and shinier and it definitely helped to fight those tangles that I was battling so hard against. Now, I just use a little bit of conditioner right after her shampoo and I can notice that her hair is instantly smoother- I can run my fingers through her hair with ease. We could definitely use the Honest Conditioner every night, but we already don't shampoo and condition every night if we don't have to. One critique I do have is actually about the bottle, and not the conditioner. Trying to wrangle a wet, squirmy toddler is hard enough. Trying to do that AND use two hands to get shampoo or conditioner in your hand is a whole other ballgame. What I disliked about the Honest Conditioner's nozzle is that the pump will not go completely down if your hand is anywhere beneath the nozzle. To have the pump go completely down, you have to get your hand as close to the bottle as possible or tip the bottle with one hand so that gravity helps all of the product go into your other hand and not between your hand and the bottle. A little picky, I know. Since it worked so great on her hair, I thought that I would give it a try. I have curly hair and I'm loyal to my special curly-girl shampoo and conditioner. Although the Honest Conditioner did leave my hair smooth, it's just not quite the same as my go-to curl products. Overall, I am really pleased with the Honest Conditioner. I've been using this on my 2 year old who has curly, dry hair. Her hair used to feel wirey and was constantly tangled. This has made a huge difference though. Now she has soft bouncy curls. I also love that it's fragrance free, since she has sensitive skin, and is tear free! The one downside is that it's quite hard to rinse out which, on a squirmy 2 year old, can be a bit tricky. Overall though, it's worth the rinsing hassle and I'll definitely continue using this.christina .j

I am so sad. I love this brand. prior to the formula revamp i bought the regular shampoo and the hair conditioner and my hair was so happy! it smelled amazing and my hair was so soft and bouncy all the time. I am not sure why they changed the formula but the new one, I can't wash it out of my hair fully no matter how long i scrub my scalp. Whats worse is it says 'low poo' but it does not 'poo' (lather) at all. So i can't tell how much i have left in my hair. I wish they would switch it back to the old formula. The cleanser doesn't go on like shampoo. You cleanse from your scrap to your ends. It has a slight smell but not to overpowering and doesn't smell like chemical. I like that you can use it with color treated hair. My curls have lost some definition. I always condition after. But with Devacurl, I noticed after rinsing my hair felt really soft, so I skipped the conditioning. I also noticed how my hair felt less oily and their was less frizz. I used this and so many more As I Am products for my children. They are mixed with curly, course hair. Shampoos and conditioners made for Caucasian hair are always drying for them. The coconut cowash is amazing. It smells great and doesn't weigh down your curls. I swear by As I Am for my babies hair. Always looks clean, shiny, their curls are bouncy and soft. This is the only cowash I have used and am hesitant to try any others because I don't think they'll be as good as this one! I shampoo my hair once a week and cowash once in between. This has been amazing for me! I massage it in at my scalp for a good amount of time to ensure the mild surfactant in it has been given the opportunity to clean up any oil build up, then I gently use a scalp brush and apply the cowash to the lengths of my hair and begin finger detangling. Let it sit while I do my other shower stuff then rinse. If I don't use this once a week then my scalp becomes itchy in the winter. It cleans well and my fine curly hair loves it! Amazing! I was looking for a product which i can use inbetween wash or instead of using normal shampoo. This product do exactly what is suppose to do, my hair feel conditioned and moisturized as compare to normal shampoo. It is not harsh on the hair, it does not strip your hair from its natural oil. I have 4c hair and is dry, this product really nourished my hair and i was able to detangle my hair with ease. My hair feel soft and bouncy. I love it and i highly recommend it.gertrude.k

I was gifted by Pattern Beauty the Medium Conditioner to try. My hair is coily and this worked okay. I don't love it but I don't hate it also. It does give my hair hydration and more definition, but I prefer my other product. I would recommend giving this a try, just personally not what I love.hmre

As much as I’ve heard great things about pattern hair products for girls with curly hair, I can’t seem to relate to the ones raving about it. I feel that yes the product is on the thicker side but my hair feels extremely dull and dry after using. Like it strips off all of my oils and leaves me with dry brittle hair. This conditioner makes my hair so soft. I've been using it together with the hydrating shampoo and styling cream. Immediately after rinsing this out my hair feels super soft, this makes my curls very well behaved and together with the styling cream I have minimal frizz. I recently transitioned to natural hair after heat straightening for years, after using this for a while my curls are very well behaved and manageable for the first time in my life. I started seeing improvement in my curls when I started using multiple Jane cosmetics together. This cleanser automatically makes my hair get wavy/curly after washing, but doesn’t leave it feeling as clean as other products. I bought this product on the advice of my hairdresser to use once a week in order to control build up on the hair. Previously I’d been using herbal essences and other more affordable high street brands thinking that they were good enough for my hair. After conducting a scrape test on my hair, I was very grossed out to see the amount of whitish debris in each strand. This is apparently due to the build up of silicone and other less desirable ingredients – although silicone is great for that silky smooth feel, it essentially stops your hair from absorbing any nutrients from better hair products, which is why this shampoo is a must since it clarifies your hair and removes the build up but by bit. You don’t want to use this more than twice a week for the first month and then more than once a week after, otherwise I can image it would be significantly drying for your hair. The product itself is silicone free but build up comes from other factors such as the environment (I.e dusty city air, smoke and hair setting products). I’d recommend using alongside a hydrating and moisturising conditioner and shampoo for the best results. I really do highly recommend this product and use a website called skincarisma and EWG to check out what’s really in my products – it’s the best way to know what you’re buying and whether the product is right for you!Laura

I adore this cleansing conditioner so much! Showers can be rough on me due to being disabled/chronically ill. Washing my hair has been so hard but now its been made easy with this product! Its made my showers so much quicker and less pain! Only downside is it only comes in a 300ml bottle 🙁 I wish it came in the 750ml like all the other range as my hair is super long, which means the bottle is being used up way faster then i'd hope for. Its also kind of hard to tell if the product is all over the hair as it melts into the hair like an oil? It still cleanses and conditions the hair amazingly though. My hairs so much healthier now and every wash its left my hair super soft, feels hydrated, clean and it makes styling it a breeze. I love this product, I love washing my hair again instead of dreading it.Becca
