i love layering this gel on top of innersense i create hold, which is my second topper gel. this ouidad gel pretty much seals and sets my style. the texture is slimy not sticky and creates amazing slip. it has anti humidity ingredients so i would say it does it great job keeping freeze at bay. unless you’re super active (like me lol) then expect your curls to not last too long. overall i would recommend this product! for reference i have 4b tight curls, coarser textures around the nape of my hair.curlyblackgirl

I have tried so many gels from lower price points to high end. I have 2C-3B curls, low porosity and regular porosity strands, shoulder length, and curly bangs. Lots of layers in my hair with the shortest being 2” on top. I particularly love this gel because of its runny consistency, which makes it super easy to glaze and rake through the hair. On top of average 80%+ humidity in summer, I work a job that often causes me to sweat. This gel holds up. I can get away with washing my hair once a week. When I need a refresh, I either simply add water which reactivates the gel or, around mid-week, dampen hair and add more gel. The cast created is buildable – less gel = softer curls with little cast, more gel = stronger cast. I prefer a stronger cast with this product, so I use a dollar coin sized amount THREE times on each side of my hair, working in sections. I say this because some people think this gel doesn’t make a cast, but maybe they aren’t using enough product. It is an expensive gel, but worth every penny for me.cassandra.m

I heard hundreds of recommendations for this gel when I started embracing my natural 2B-3A medium porosity hair. I bought it without question, and even ordered a second bottle (the huge one, too) after the first ran out. I thought the dryness/straw texture my hair got after application was just par for the course with gels since it was my first time ever touching gel. As I learned more about humectants and other ingredients in hair products, I realized that the high glycerin content in this gel is the culprit behind my frizzy locks. Doesn't matter how much or how little gel I put in, my hair frizzes and knots as soon as it's 50% dry and it gets exponentially worse if I apply any while refreshing. For anyone reading: if you live somewhere that's very dry or very humid, avoid humectants like glycerin in the first few ingredients (or at all). Humectants draw moisture from their surroundings, but if the air is dry as bone (like it is where I live), it's going to pull that moisture from your hair (and skin if it's in skin care products) and make it extremely dry. If the air is extremely humid, your hair will feel squishy and icky (and skin will feel oily) if you use products with glycerin in them. All that being said, this is a great gel. It's liquid so it coats hair easily and I never had any problems with it flaking. Its glycerin content is just not right for my environment. If you live in a moderately humid place, this will probably be a fantastic gel for you!Amber

I bought this stuff on sale a year or so ago. I blow dry my hair every time I wash it which is about every 4 to 6 days. It's thick and curly and unruly with breakage and split ends. So I blow dry and flat iron it then I have to flat iron it every day in between because the curls and frizz come back pretty quickly. So since i go as long as possible between washes since I'm mending the damage I caused my hair as a teen and young adult and trying to grow my hair out things can get a bit greasy and flat towards the last day or two before I've finally had enough. It never looks greasy because my hair is extremely dry and thick and the super oily never gets past the roots but it definitely flattens my hair and weighs it down at this point. And since I'm used to having a lot of volume except for those couple days it drives me crazy. So I thought I could use a volumizing product so I didn't have to damage my hair by teasing it and so it would last until the end of my wash. Well it was easy enough to put in my hair and on my roots. It took a bit of product to get it an inch or so down every bit of my roots so I felt like it was kind of wasteful since a little did not go a long way. I blow dried my hair like normal and flipped it upside down and just brought my roots straight up with a ceramic large round brush to help cement the volume and get it as high as possible. It actually weighed my hair down though and it got oily much quicker when I used this product. It literally didn't do a thing for my hair at all. Now maybe this would work for someone with really fine hair who wasn't using other products in conjunction. I don't know. But what I am sure of is that out of the few different times i used this with different tips and techniques that are supposed to give you the best results it never once worked for me. And because of that I can't recommend. The good things about it are all technical but it is part of the product so I counted it and rated it with these included. The dispenser is like a lotion pump where you just push down and out comes the product and you continue that until you have your desired amount. My favorite this about this gel is how soft it makes my hair. It's very hydrating and conditioning to the hair, every time I use this my curls are very soft and bouncy. I have mixed it with several other leave in conditioners and creams, both from the same brand and from other brands, and I have found it mixes well with a few different products. It doesn't mix with everything, test it in your hands first, but I found a few good combos with this gel. It also gives my hair good shine, I really loved that. My wash n go's always lasted a few days with this gel. I wish it had a little more hold, I'd say this is like medium hold. It didn't give a strong cast, which may or may not be a good thing depending on your preference. Even without strong hold, it's still a great and dependable gel. I am going to give it a 3 since I couldn’t give it a 3.5. The Defining Gel has a great non-sticky appeal. Neither my hands nor my hair felt heavy, coated or sticky but it did have some “crunchy” pieces. I don’t like that crunchy gel feeling in my hair. My hair wasn’t curly after using the diffuser as it is with another product I use. It was just barely waves. I will try it again with a different diffuser and see what happens. I'd been using Herbal Essences' 'set me up' styling gel for years and only purchased Garnier's styling gel because Herbal Essences is no longer making the particular gel I had been using, or for some reason, it simply is no longer available at a reasonable price. I have to say that Garnier's gel is far superior to Herbal Essences' gel. I have extremely short gray hair, and my morning routine consists of a one to two-minute blow dry, a quick brush through my hair, and an application of a small dollop of hair gel. After that, I never touch my hair for the rest of the day. Garnier's product is very light, nicely scented, and it stiffens my hair in place with a very natural look. There is absolutely no white flaking, and the amount required to hold my hair in place is about half what I used to use with the Herbal Essences gel. A dime-sized amount is completely adequate to ensure my hair doesn't move. I am far more satisfied with this gel than with the various ridiculously expensive gels my hair stylist uses on my hair when I go in for a haircut every six weeks. This acts like glue. I have long hair (just above waist) and I tried this because my husband uses it (short hair). I added a quarter size amount to damp hair, scrunched it a bit and let air dry. Nice wavy curls but midday I put my hair up into a messy bun (hair was barely damp). At the end of the day when I let my hair down it was all glued together. When I brushed out my hair it ripped and pulled. Awful. My hair is now damaged and completely frizzed out. I am getting it all cut off this weekend. The biggest appeal for me is the scent, it smells very good when I put this gel on I smell as though I just came out the shower. This gel is great for wash n gos, updos, and laying edges. My wash n gos come out super defined and I get big hair as my style gets old. Then I’ll use this gel to slick up my hair into a puff/bun. I’ve tried many edge controls and none of them last past 2 hours then my edges would start to curl up. But with this gel, I apply it and lay my edges, tie a satin scarf around them, set for 10 minutes, and I’m good to go for the whole day. Tresemmé has changed the formulation. The label info listed by Target, as of today, does not reflect the changes that Tresemmé has made. The old formula worked wonderful for my hair. This new formula with coconut oil causes my hair type to frizz. This new formula didn’t hold its style as a 5 hold either. My hair ended up limp and frizzy. The prior formula held all day and combated humidity. With the old formula I could do a quick refresh without having to rewash my hair for another 2-3 days. I washed the new version out of my hair the next day since it wasn’t the product for me. Some hair types do fine with coconut oil so if that’s you I’m assuming it works quite well.happyapple

If you want gel thats actually going to hold this is it good ol' gorilla snot lol. You gotta know how to use gel otherwise tou will get frustrated, use with water or wet your hair before using. the thicker your hair the less water you want to use for a stronger hold or vice versa. If you want your hair in place, look no further. Gorilla Snot in the yellow bottle is what I ask for when I walk in our store. Every employee who works in the department knows exactly what it is and where it is. I ride a Harley and I spike up my hair some, 70 mph with no helmet (don’t judge, it’s not the law here) and my hair doesn’t budge. If you have hard to handle hair this stuff works. But side note, barbers don’t want you coming in their shops with it still in your hair. They don’t call it Gorilla Snot for nothing. I guess it’s hard on their scissors and clippers. So on haircut days wear a hat, all the other days grab this bottle.Pops

This stuff is a life saver!! I tried everything to lay down my frontals including got 2 b and bold hold glue, but they all only lasted a few hours. Gorilla snot can easily last up to 4 days, and sometimes even a whole week! (if it's not humid outside). It's crazy because gorilla snot is much cheaper than any other glue or gel on the market, yet it works the best. I highly recommend this product for any wig/frontal users, and I also recommend it for anyone struggling to find a good edge control. I always had trouble laying down my natural edges, but this product keeps them down with no problem. I'm beyond happy that I finally found a product that works for me.laurielle
