i love layering this gel on top of innersense i create hold, which is my second topper gel. this ouidad gel pretty much seals and sets my style. the texture is slimy not sticky and creates amazing slip. it has anti humidity ingredients so i would say it does it great job keeping freeze at bay. unless you’re super active (like me lol) then expect your curls to not last too long. overall i would recommend this product! for reference i have 4b tight curls, coarser textures around the nape of my hair.curlyblackgirl
I have tried so many gels from lower price points to high end. I have 2C-3B curls, low porosity and regular porosity strands, shoulder length, and curly bangs. Lots of layers in my hair with the shortest being 2” on top. I particularly love this gel because of its runny consistency, which makes it super easy to glaze and rake through the hair. On top of average 80%+ humidity in summer, I work a job that often causes me to sweat. This gel holds up. I can get away with washing my hair once a week. When I need a refresh, I either simply add water which reactivates the gel or, around mid-week, dampen hair and add more gel. The cast created is buildable – less gel = softer curls with little cast, more gel = stronger cast. I prefer a stronger cast with this product, so I use a dollar coin sized amount THREE times on each side of my hair, working in sections. I say this because some people think this gel doesn’t make a cast, but maybe they aren’t using enough product. It is an expensive gel, but worth every penny for me.cassandra.m
I heard hundreds of recommendations for this gel when I started embracing my natural 2B-3A medium porosity hair. I bought it without question, and even ordered a second bottle (the huge one, too) after the first ran out. I thought the dryness/straw texture my hair got after application was just par for the course with gels since it was my first time ever touching gel. As I learned more about humectants and other ingredients in hair products, I realized that the high glycerin content in this gel is the culprit behind my frizzy locks. Doesn't matter how much or how little gel I put in, my hair frizzes and knots as soon as it's 50% dry and it gets exponentially worse if I apply any while refreshing. For anyone reading: if you live somewhere that's very dry or very humid, avoid humectants like glycerin in the first few ingredients (or at all). Humectants draw moisture from their surroundings, but if the air is dry as bone (like it is where I live), it's going to pull that moisture from your hair (and skin if it's in skin care products) and make it extremely dry. If the air is extremely humid, your hair will feel squishy and icky (and skin will feel oily) if you use products with glycerin in them. All that being said, this is a great gel. It's liquid so it coats hair easily and I never had any problems with it flaking. Its glycerin content is just not right for my environment. If you live in a moderately humid place, this will probably be a fantastic gel for you!Amber

This curl cream would be great for you if you’re not looking to have too much hold in your hair. It’s thick, but it doesn’t create a very strong cast for me. As you can see, my hair is already frizzing at the roots and it’s not completely dry yet. There’s no cast to scrunch out. The pump is also really hard to use and only dispenses like a dime size of product with each pump, which means I need to pump twice just to get enough for one section of hair. It is very hydrating, so I can’t knock it down too much, but it is probably my least favorite ouidad product, which is saying a lot because I LOVE ouidad. I've struggled with finding products to tame my type 3B curls for as long as I can remember. I have tried mousse, leave-in conditioners, gels, and all kinds of creams. I use this product every day with my Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Leave In Conditioning Cream and they work extremely well together. A bottle of this product lasts me about three-four months. I then plop for 10-30 minutes depending on if I’m air drying or diffusing.
I actually prefer to air dry and this product allows that, though it takes hours to dry. Can form a slight cast which I actually love. Once fully dry any crunch is easily scrunched out. I NEVER have shine in my hair due to the coarse texture but with this my curls are defined and shiny. Best part is that even in high humidity this holds perfectly.
I cannot speak to 2nd or 3rd day hair as I haven’t been able to test this part yet.

This thick clear gel reminds me a bit of Aveda Humectant pomade. It also does the same job as John Frieda Goldspun balm too. It's great for finishing off and defining my blonde curly hair. This gel is great for wash n gos, updos, and laying edges. My wash n gos come out super defined and I get big hair as my style gets old. Then I’ll use this gel to slick up my hair into a puff/bun. I’ve tried many edge controls and none of them last past 2 hours then my edges would start to curl up. Here is how you use it, after detangling your hair, and a generous amount to your hair. If you add too much your hair won’t look super curly. After a year of locs- I combed them out. Usually I see a lot of product build up when I take out my locs, however after exclusively using this for a year, there wasn't much at all. I have heat damaged hair as you can see from the color on down. I’m still learning how to care for my natural curls and this product worked great. On wet hair the ginger smell is strong and the hair (damaged parts) were crunchy. My roots were nice and soft. My favorite this about this gel is how soft it makes my hair. It's very hydrating and conditioning to the hair, every time I use this my curls are very soft and bouncy. I have mixed it with several other leave in conditioners and creams, both from the same brand and from other brands, and I have found it mixes well with a few different products. It doesn't mix with everything, test it in your hands first, but I found a few good combos with this gel. It also gives my hair good shine, I really loved that. My wash n go's always lasted a few days with this gel. I wish it had a little more hold, I'd say this is like medium hold. It didn't give a strong cast, which may or may not be a good thing depending on your preference. Even without strong hold, it's still a great and dependable gel. What a fun brand – this packaging is so retro! Even though it is not my go to product, I do enjoy it. I found mine in Marshalls, but other than that you can mainly buy it from Amazon making it harder to find. It does enhance your curly hair create nice texture without weighing your hair down. Easy to distribute and a little goes a long way. So if you can find it in store buy it, but I normally do drugstore having to order online is not always easy to do. BUT, that all changed as soon as I got them into my hands, I'm thoroughly impressed! These pencil liners are the 'sharpenable' format, which I do enjoy. They are both (my favorite) gel formula – allowing them to be intensely pigmented, yet still maintain a very soft smooth application. These liners are multipurpose – great for working into an eyeshadow look, or adding a dash of color onto the waterline. Both of the colors actually look really good blended together, but they also look stunning on their own. I'd been using Herbal Essences' 'set me up' styling gel for years and only purchased Garnier's styling gel because Herbal Essences is no longer making the particular gel I had been using, or for some reason, it simply is no longer available at a reasonable price. I have to say that Garnier's gel is far superior to Herbal Essences' gel. I have extremely short gray hair, and my morning routine consists of a one to two-minute blow dry, a quick brush through my hair, and an application of a small dollop of hair gel. After that, I never touch my hair for the rest of the day. Garnier's product is very light, nicely scented, and it stiffens my hair in place with a very natural look. There is absolutely no white flaking, and the amount required to hold my hair in place is about half what I used to use with the Herbal Essences gel. A dime-sized amount is completely adequate to ensure my hair doesn't move. I am far more satisfied with this gel than with the various ridiculously expensive gels my hair stylist uses on my hair when I go in for a haircut every six weeks. This acts like glue. I have long hair (just above waist) and I tried this because my husband uses it (short hair). I added a quarter size amount to damp hair, scrunched it a bit and let air dry. Nice wavy curls but midday I put my hair up into a messy bun (hair was barely damp). At the end of the day when I let my hair down it was all glued together. When I brushed out my hair it ripped and pulled. Awful. My hair is now damaged and completely frizzed out. I am getting it all cut off this weekend. This is the only hair gel I use. I freak out if I’m out of it. I was traveling and had an early appointment and realized “one of us” didn’t pack it. I have very fluffy/fro-ey hair so I rely on it. It’s water based and light and had an impressive hold. It shakes out or fluffs out without flaking. An easy hair re-wet can help the water based formula reshape and get ya through the last few hours of the day if you need. I used this gel on soaking wet hair, applied with praying hands and gently scrunch up to the root. On dry hair, glaze a small amount to tame halo frizz also to revive my under layer adding some water as well. The scent is really fresh and not overpowering. I love that it gave me long lasting hold without looking/feeling crunchy. I also like that it only takes a small amount of product so the bottle will last a long time! This product definitely have a learning curve for sure but once you get it down pack your curls will be popping. I tried using this product with leave in conditioner and it definitely did not work, but once I followed the directions correctly it showed results. Make sure your hair is soak and wet for the best results. It didn’t leave my hair crunchy or flaky, my curls were soft and manageable without feeling hard. I would say it last for a good three days before I had to pull out my curl reviver spray (I don’t know the actually name of it) from Deva Curl. I'm a natural with 4a/4b hair that mainly does wash n goes. I wanted a gel to layer for hold that had better ingredients than eco and wetline. I planned to use this as a topper. I've experienced that this product offers great hold, it does not control frizz very well due to the light/watery consistency. I used a botanical gel underneath and I think my hair would have had more frizz control if I used it on damp hair vs. soaking wet. I feel as if my hair dried quicker while using this product (I did sit under the hooded dryer) and the application was super easy. I felt that it had slip due to the consistency. The hold that this gives is correct. I would describe it as a firm-medium. Definitely not a strong hold. And I would agree with the reviewer that said the curls need to be sculpted beforehand. This is not going to give you much definition alone. Use this for additional hold and control. Overall, I think I would purchase again and I'm interested in trying their strong hold gel.Jasmine
I love this product. After my leave-in I usually have a few tangles, but when I use this cream instead of my usual cream, it gave me the best slip and gets all the tangles out that my leave in did not attack, and I had no frizz. It cut my wash day in half. It used to take me an hour in a half to do my hair (tangles, ugh!), now it only takes 45 – 50 minutes. My curls were so hydrated and defined. I just love this product. Don't let the size of the bottle make you think you need a bigger bottle because a little is all you need…about the size of a quarter if you're doing sections (I do 4 sections) but use it according to your hair density. My hair is a thick density on the top (this was great for that) and my hair is 3C/4A. It works perfect my sista's. Try it. Also, I noticed it has shea butter in it…a major plus for moisture. I have type 3c/3b Hair so I am always needing a good hair gel. I do like the original gel in this curl talk line. It provides adequate hold. Once this gel was introduced, I knew I had to try it. It does have a sticky consistency. But I am sure that is what helps the gel give that extra hold. You will have a hard cast on your hair once it is dry, but u can always break the cast if u want to. This gel holds up to humidity well. My advice since it is so sticky to the touch and to avoid tangling your hair is to apply your typical styling products before hand, and add this gel at the very last. It will be easier to work through the hair and wont leave a tangles mess. This is not a good gel if you feel like refreshing or combing out your hair the next day, just cause the extra hold that it does give. I found this on sale at Ulta for 3 for $25… It's the PERFECT finishing product for my thick, straight hair. I've tried a TON of styling creams, lotions, sprays, and pomades over the years, but they all made my hair look flat, greasy, stiff, or didn't have enough hold to keep baby hairs from sticking up. I received this as a sample from Ulta with another purchase I had made. I have thin, fine hair and I use this product either with a curling iron or curlers . It says it has #3 hold and it does. I cannot tell you how very pleased I am. I have actually gone two days without styling my hair and it still looks good. This is unheard of for me. For reference I have for 4a hair in the front and 3b hair in the back of my head. I normally use the regular climbing control gel that gives me hold so I thought this should be even better. That wasn't the case. By day 2 after working out my hair looked a week old(wash n go) with the other gel I get about 4-5 days working out 4-5 times a week. I also had a lot of frizz with this gel. This is hands down the best curly hair gel on the market. I use 2-3 pumps for my whole head and scrunch it in after applying a leave in conditioner to very wet hair. It starts by drying hard but then as the day goes on, your hair looks and feels so soft and the curls are still in place. If i’m looking for a stronger hold because of a slick-back ponytail or something, I usually opt for a stronger gel like Not Your Mother’s. However, I still use Uncle Funky’s Daughter every single day and it’s been excellent for my 3b hair! And CGM approved!!! Worth every penny and lasts long.Natalie
I branched out a year ago to try new products for my wavy hair and I stumbled on this one. I wasn’t sure at first because it’s a weird texture. Kinda like a watery gel. I wasn’t 100% sure it would help my hair. Omg. I was so wrong to be skeptical. This stuff is in my everyday hair arsenal. I scrunch this into my wet hair after a shower. Sometimes it’s all I use and it leaves my hair soft and gently defined. If I want stronger definition, I add in Marc Anthony’s curly mousse right after this and scrunch it in with a t-shirt then let air dry. Once dry, I scrunch with my hands or a t-shirt to get the “crunch” out and my hair looks so good after. It holds the waves in nicely all day long and strong.kelly.w
Feels just like snot!! And gets the job DONE! So just so that you know, I’m a lazy 4C natural. Meaning I do bare minimum to maintain a few strands of hair on my non-chemically treated hair. I literally do not use styling products, partially out of laziness but even more so out of fear of breakage and dryness etc. I took a chance, and for the first tome in years, I tried a styling product, and this was it. It’s a gel with the exact consistency of snot. First wash your hair, condition, leave in condition or whatever, and then while your hair is still soaking wet, apply a GENEROUS amount. Finger detangle/shingle/whatever you to that usually gets a little more definition in your hair and boom. Soft not crunchy curls. Such an amazing hold without feeling like your hair is going to fall out. No flaking. I used to LOVE this edge control gel as it provided a firm hold for my edges with no flaking or heaviness. Prior to changing the formula, it was also the only edge control gel on the market that truly provided a firm and lasting hold for my edges. Unfortunately, since the formula has changed, I can no longer use this edge gel because it provides no control for my edges, and it leaves my hair feeling greasy. Whereas, I could previously go all day with my edges laid, now I can’t even go an hour with this new formula. As soon as I dipped my finger in this new formula, I could tell that it didn’t have the same level of tackiness as did the old formula. This new formula is no different than the other brands of edge control currently in the market, and is now useless to me. Please bring back the old formula!!Denly
My hair like many others is kind of sensitive to different products and chemicals. I knew Olive Oil products were good I’ve used them all though I did try others before it. I recently got a hair cut to bring in the new year something different. I wanted something to just kinda keep my edges maintained and slicked down but not make them hard or flakey and possibly dry. I purchased this at my local Walmart for $3.50 and tried it out and I love it and it smells good. Doesn’t irritate my hair but gives it a slight shine and does it’s job.
