20 Best Hair Straightener Brush For African American Hair (Feb 2023 Update)

As someone who has curly and thick hair, straightening it is the hardest part of getting ready even if I dried it with my blow drier before and it isn't as curly as it normally is. I bought this today when it caught my eye as I was leaving. I have been curious about these kinds of straighteners ever since that first video went viral. I was pleasantly surprised at how well it worked. Two or three passes done correctly and done! You do have to section your hair especially if it's thick but it leaves your hair much nicer than if you used a regular flat iron. Doesn't pull out that much hair, maybe three or four strands here or there, nothing you wouldn't lose with a flat iron. Doesn't take that long to heat up but follow the instructions for your hair type. All around a great product if you count in that it does the same thing those $80 or $90 brush straighteners do for a lower price. As with anything, following the instructions is key. Not recommend for oily hair and you CANNOT use any type of heat protector or any products (heat safe or not) in your hair with ANY of these straightening brushes on the current market. Trust me, I've tried all from the cheap brands to the expensive and they all work GREAT and last awhile when you DON'T add products or have very oily hair because they leave a residue that is very hard if not impossible to fully clean off these things! Even if it looks clean it's still there! its a problem because then after use 2,3,4 etc times it smells, burns and causes it to overheat and damage your hair. The whole point of this is to do little to no damage to your hair but still have similar results that of a flat iron. It also doesn't get down to the roots of curly/very curly hair or thick. Hair tools are one key thing when trying to grow or manage your hair, the wrong tools can hinder most of the progress you are seeking to make. Now if you have soft silky hair, hair management is so easy peasy for you. Great for you, we love you too but we with thick or coarse hair want at the very least to have worthy tools for our battle with the hair. Being black, I have very thick tight;y curled hair, so straightening it takes hours. The thought of just running a brush through my hair and having it all straightened is so drool worthy. The only down side is the limit of its temp setting, if it could go higher, meaning faster straightening for really curly hair. It took some time but it did straighten my hair, without me spending back breaking hours, sectioning and straightening my hair. All it took was slow even brush strokes, through my mane and little by little I saw it straightening my tightly curled hair. Another flaw for me is in its design, that being the position of the control buttons. The buttons being by the side on the grip handle, means that every time you apply pressure to drag the brush through thick hair your fingers will be hitting the controls. messing with the temp settings. With that being said this is worth the buy. This brush has been a worthy addition to my arsenal, its design and function means better control over the mane. Trust me taming the 'Fro' is no easy task and any brush that can tangle with mine and not limp out a broken sordid mess is worth a mention. I have very coarse, thick, wavy hair. I have only ever used a flat iron before. When I bought this I was actually shopping for a replacement for my awesome, but 16+ year old flat iron. I bought this on whim, because honestly, the price. I even asked the Ulta associate about their return policy because I was sure this tiny thing wouldn't work in my giant, poofy, frizzy hair. I was 98% sure I was returning it. Now, as another reviewer said this will not really straighten you hair if you have A LOT of hair, although it did better than expected, but it would make wavy hair pretty smooth. It's not going to give you flat iron results. It also didn't really turn my ends under the way I like. What it did do, and what I actually bought it for was to straighten a terrible cowlick that I have on one side of my head that kinks up over night no matter how satiny or silky my pillowcase is or how careful I am to not sleep on that side of my head. The first morning that used this I had a particularly tossy-turny night of sleep and my hair was a complete mess. I thought it was going to be a ponytail day. But this little thing straightened out all the kinks and left my hair looking like the day before when it was freshly ironed. I'm actually really glad I purchased this and I almost wish I'd purchased the full size unit, but this works just fine. Especially for the price point. At the same time that I bought this I bought a pretty pricey flat iron that was a huge disappointment and will be getting returned. I have thick wavy hair and I like to straighten and smooth my hair every day so I usually use a hair straightener every day. I have never had a brush that straightens my hair so this product was something I was very intrigued by and excited to use. The brush is compact which I absolutely love! I love small appliances that don't take up a lot of space, it would be great for people who travel since it's so compact. It's simple to use, you push a button and it heats up quick. It does a good job at making my hair frizz free and smooth which I really like. I did have to use it a couple of times on the same strands of hair to get stick straight hair. I have a lot of hair so if I am in a rush I will just use the mini brush to smooth out the top layers of my hair. The Instyler Mini brush is a versatile product for sure. I had never used a ceramic straightening brush before but this product made me fall in love with it! I also did not know Instyler had ceramic brushes but glad I now have one since I really enjoy Instyler products. I feel like it makes my hair look great no matter what look I am aiming for. I am actually planning on buying the brush for my mom as a gift since she has really frizzy hair and she is looking for something to help tame away the frizz. I know she will like it since we have similar hair. I am really impressed with this straightening comb. The design allows you to get pretty close to the root while keeping the heat away from your skin. The hair guides glide smoothly through the hair. I found this much easier to use than a flat iron and more effective than the heated brush. I love it! I have very thick curly hair. It usually takes me 1 1/2 hours to straighten it with a standard straight iron and this tool cut the time in half. Im usually fighting with a comb and having to lay the straightener down while I pick up the comb to comb it. Its a battle. This product solved my problem. The only drawback is my bangs are very short and it doesnt work with short hair. Will have to use old straightener till they grow out then into the recycling bin with the old. Cute product. Great concept. I have thick wavy hair, especially my underneath layers. I used washed and dried my hair, which took most wave out. The brush did a good job with the already straight pieces but for the wavy underneath it just didn’t do well at all. the front looks good but if you look in the back, you can tell it was a straightening fail. i tried for about 20 minutes in total spending most time on my underneath layers and the waves just would not get straight. i would not recommend this on its own. I’d rather just take the time to flat iron my hair. Although, i’m sure it would be good for already straight hair, for touch ups, but just not well for wavy / curly hair. slightly disappointed since it says for all hair types.Austyn Pagliaro

This product is excellent. I have very curly hair and do Japanese straightening once a year. When I'm in between treatments, I used to use a straightening iron which just kills my arm (and my hair). I was a little skeptical at first but thought I'd give this a try and I'm honestly pleasantly surprised. I section my hair and brush it while lifting each section and it works great, and because it's not literally burning my hair the way an iron does, it looks much shinier and healthier and takes less time too! The Flower Straighting Hot Brush is fantastic! I am obsessed over this one. It is so easy and quick to use. I have never tried a hot brush but have wanted. This amazing hot brush is so much quicker then my typical flat iron. It glides through my hair so easy, getting any little knot that I may have missed brushing it in the process. With a flat iron I would have to do it little piece by piece and do that piece a few times, but with this, its one, maybe twice and it's smooth and straight. I use it everyday now. There is four heat settings. It heats up to 410 degrees. One of my favorite features is the automatic shut off. After 45 minutes, it will shut off, which I find is super important! It is absolutely adorable also! Simple but perfect all in one. I highly highly recommend this wonderful product by Flower. You will fall in love the first time you use it and will use it everyday! This product was nothing but a disappointment. My hair type is wavy, frizzy, and poofy. Just like a previous review, I also have my hair up in a bun majority of the time and thought this would be a great tool to use to help me straighten my hair more often. This product claims to straighten hair in a faster pace, which I was looking forward too since it usually takes me around an hour and a half to iron my hair with a straightening iron. The only thing this straightening brush did was make my hair even MORE poofy. It did “straighten” (barely, but whatever) my hair in a faster pace, which was around 30 minutes, but my hair looked like a mess. It was SO POOFY. I had to go over it with a straightener to make it look somewhat normal. I did purchase this on their website with an Influenser’s promo code, so I was not able to make a return since I used the code. It definitely wasn’t worth the full price, and barely worth the discounted rate as well. The only reason why I still use this is so I can get my hair “straightened” in 30 minutes and then retouch with a regular iron, rather than spending a whole 1.5 hours on the iron alone. I received my Foxy Bae straightening brush today and I was so excited to try this. I have tried other straightening brushes and not been too happy with the results. I have very long, thick, curly and unruly hair. When I got the box and opened it, the first thing I noticed is that it came in an very stylish box which is an huge plus for me. It looked so beautiful sitting there when I opened it, and to my surprise it came with two hair clips, which I definitely needed considering my others have all been misplaced or taken. I took it out of the box and it felt amazing in the hand. I felt the bristles and they felt very well made. I then plugged it up and turned it on. It’s got an digital face for the temp and so I adjusted the temp. It heated up extremely fast and that’s awesome. I will state that the back of the brush got very very hot to the touch and the sides where the rose gold bezel is at got very hot, I burned my pinky while straightening/brushing my hair on this. I sectioned my hair and began to use their straightening brush. I had just washed my hair yesterday and dried it with Amikas blow drying brush (awesome) and I didn’t use any products to tame the frizz or fly aways. I didn’t curl it or anything. I simply went to bed afterwards. So when I got my straightening brush in the mail today I was beyond excited and my hair was ready to try it. While I found the brush to get extremely hot, it shouldn’t have ever burned me. I burned my ear and my pinky using this brush. It did do its job and tame my hair while straightening it. I could definitely see myself using this brush as an quick fix to just straighten or go over next day hair. I haven’t used this brush on my hair when it dries curly though and so I can not speak to how it does on hair that hasn’t been dried straight. I do know that in the past straightening brushes did not work for me as an straightening tool when my hair has dried curly and for this reason alone I do not use them often. This brush is built better then the Head Kandy straightening brush, which I have used and did not like nor did it work in my hair. I will say the head Kandy had one benefit, it did not burn no matter where you touched it at. I think that Foxy Bae straightening Brush will work for all hair types, even very curly hair like mine. I also think that you shouldn’t allow pre-teens to use this tool alone, as it does and is capable of burning you. Over al this brush seemed to straighten my hair, leave it shiny and beautiful. It isn’t “sleek” like when you do it with an actual flat iron. It looks full and healthy with some volume and body to it, not stuck flat to the side of my head. I like the way my hair looks and feels after using this brush and while I would recommend this brush to someone who likes to use straightening brushes or is wanting to try one. I would warn you about the downfalls of this brush, it gets VERY hot and it can and will burn you and so be very careful. I even lowered the temp way down and it still was hot and burned. My hair is fine and this straightening brush from Remington worked so much better than others I have tried because of the brush design. The brush is deeper and laid out so the heat is on the base and it straightened all my hair, it held my fine hair in the brush well enough to be effective! It's a great design and shape! The straightener was easy to use and comfortable to hold. I love the features as well, it has three heat settings depending on your need, the light indicates the heat selection you are using. It has an auto shut off after 60 minutes, which is a great safety feature. I'm also impressed with the way my hair glides through the brush and the bristles do not snag or tangle my hair. Even more than other heated hair styling tools, your success with this one will depend on what type of hair you have and what your expectations are when styling your hair. My hair is neither curly nor straight, just mildly poofy and a bit frizzy – without heat, it falls into a weird unattractive pageboy type style so on days I don't style my hair with a heated tool, I pull it into a ponytail. Using the heated straightening brush styles my hair just barely enough that I can avoid a ponytail and wear my shoulder length hair down without being annoyed by it every time I pass a mirror. And that is enough for me to be happy with the brush and continue using it; it definitely fills a previously empty spot in my arsenal of heating styling tools as most days I'm not going to bother with a flat iron or heated rollers. I took off one star because the brush handle is awkward and my fingers land on the buttons too often; also it is a bit too heavy. Another negative – it drags though my hair less than smoothly. And it works best with slow passes through the hair which is fine until you get to the ends; it's hard to hold the ends of your hair in the brush. Since I have fine hair, I am able to use this brush like a regular brush, but I would suggest if you have really thick or really wavy/curly hair, that you section your hair for best results. I had the Profecter Styler (by Calista Tools) prior to this styler which is the exact same product for half the cost. After 5 years, my Profector styler stopped working. I started searching on the internet immediately and found this one and decided to try it. I was able to purchase this product in person the next day which was great as I depend on this type of a styler for my hair. I am in my late fifties and have always had baby fine hair. My hair length is between my chin and shoulders. I usually flip my hair at the ends which is a very good style for me. This styler works GREAT for this.Carla

I have curly/wavy thick hair. Depending on the humidity levels and how much or which shampoo and conditioner I used and how much oil I had in my hair before I washed them (many variables in short) my hair can be very curly with tight ringlets or more towards wavy side. I should mention the use of dryer makes them very frizzy and they are frizzy to being with, so I let my hair air dry. So its unpredictable result after letting my hair air dry for 3 to 4 hours. I can use my ceramic straightener and it works wonders on my hair, but like dryer it also takes at least 30 minutes for the length and amount of hair I have. However I get bored with the simple straight hair after a while as well. And they are rare days my hair dries wavy it looks good on me as well. I had not found a way to consistently achieve that kind of hair with waves but no tight curls making hair look less shiny and not well kept. So what I needed was a softer heat that would get rid of the tighter curls but not make it completely straight. Also with the straightener I have to spend 30 minutes once I start, with this I can customize depending on how much smoothing out I need and how much time I have. I just love the output after I use this. It keeps the natural volume my hair has compared to the straightener that gets rid it. It does not look like I have done anything specially, any heat treatment, it looks like my natural wavy, voluminous, air dried hair. Also with less heat, I am causing less damage. So if you are somewhat similar to me, need more of a smoother than a straightener or curler and don't want to spend hours on drying and curling or straightening then this is your product. I have fine hair and usually would stick it up to 'style' it. However, it was getting damaged, so I got it cut short, and then had two problems – one, I didn't want to wash it every day, but it looked horrible otherwise; and two, curling irons and rollers are not for me (I travel too much and my scalp burns too easily). I researched this and saw demos, but was still a little skeptical since I am just not good with tools no matter how easy they look (I lack that magic gene that enables you to style you hair I guess). Long story short, I love it. Just a few minutes and a few flicks and my hair looks like I just had it done in the salon. As a 3c natural hair girl, I am always looking for fun products to straighten my hair and give it some curls that aren't as tight as my natural ones. I was very excited to try this out when I saw it included a round brush. First of all, the space between the two plates isn't very wide, and I am used to it being wide as it is on my other flat irons. That threw me off a little bit. Second, there is nothing that allows you to change the heat setting and because my hair is course, it requires a little more heat to get it straight. With this iron, I was only able to get a sort of puffy straight hair with some frizzy curls. I really liked the easy to use round brush though. I usually don't use one myself when I'm doing my hair, but this one went through easily. I did have a little bit of trouble with making a curl with the brush part at first, but I eventually got it. Also, it takes a little while to heat up. I think this is a good product, maybe just not for my hair type. I would recommend it to friends that have looser hair types. When I received this tool I was a little skeptical with the 4 in 1 feature but after daily use, I will say that I prefer this one to the Amika Strand Perfect Ceramic Styler that I received in my FabFitFun box and now I use the Instyler Max daily. I like to wash my hair every other day and what I really like about the Instyler is that it really does add volume when you place it under your hair close to the roots like the instructions say. It's great for me because My hair loses its volume easily. I also really like the lights that turn on, and how quickly it heats up. I have used this as a strighener and as a volumizer. I have not tired to curl my hair as I usually wear it straight. It straightens quickly and it keeps my hair feeling smooth and soft. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is that because it's not very thin, it's hard to straighten the baby hairs around my face and that's very important to me. I have been trying to find a fit for my hair needs, with the right hot iron hair tool for years. I'm so happy I have found what I have been looking for. The Instyler max has cut the time it takes to do my hair in half. I can straighten, curl and give my thin hair the extra volume I have been seaching for endlessly. I received the MiroPure as a gift and was fairly skeptical because my hair is very curly and these types of straighteners never quite work on my hair. I was incredibly surprised when I used it for the first time and after a few passes my hair was fairly straight. This is a great product to use when wanting to team and calm down frizzy and curly hair in a jiffy. Since this is a brush straightener it doesn’t quite get to the roots to completely straighten, and my ends always tend to be drier than the rest. I love this brush. It's great for when you want to straighten your hair really fast. It definitely does not do the same job as a regular flat iron would, but it's close enough. This thing is amazing, I did a quick 10-minute straighten and i was thoroughly impressed. I will be using it daily! So..I am biracial. I usually use a flat iron to straighten my hair which requires me to stand in front of the mirror for about 45 minutes. My hair is down to my waist. I used this product while watching tv. Sitting on my couch. Although I do not feel that it straightens as well as a flat iron, I will say Im happy with this purchase. Takes about the same time but with much less effort. I literally just brushed my hair. Its straight, but lighter and with more volume than with a flat iron, I dont feel the ends are as straight as I would like, but I do believe that by the time I tie my hair up for the night when I awake I will see no difference between the brush and the flat iron. This brush straightener works great. I have fine/ thin hair that just needs some touch-up, but with the adjustable temp I'm sure it could do much more also. This brush does not have the cool tips like some I have seen, but the outer bristles and inner protector spikes are longer than the heated spikes, so you don't burn your head.ashberg

I might have just found a new favorite hair product! My hair is naturally very straight (no wave, no curl, etc) and can get stringy looking if I don't comb it often. I like this product because it saves me a step when straightening (more like finishing) my hair. I always have to brush it before straightening it with a regular straightener, but with this styling brush, it takes that step away and gives me a more smooth and pretty finished product. I tried it after I slept on it wet one night. I woke up with kinks and weird bumps in my hair. This styling brush smoothed it right out and my hair was ready to go within just a few minutes. I also tried in a similar situation–after my hair had been in a ponytail, this smoothed those kinks right out. I only like to wash my hair 2-3 times per week, and this works great for giving my hair a smooth and quick finish on those days I haven't washed. My ten year old daughter's hair is slightly different than mine–mostly straight with a bit of curl and waviness (especially in the back). This worked awesome on her hair and worked quickly as well. I think my favorite thing though is that she can use this herself with ease and likes the results it gives her as well. I tried doing some curls and I couldn't figure it out. It will do some light flips out or under, but is nice because it is a very subtle flip. I think the biggest testament to it is that I have used it everyday since I have gotten it. I have curly, 3a hair. It's porous/often dry, thick in quantity, and fine in texture. Often frizzy and easily damaged… I'm a devacurl haircut and product girl. I don't straighten my hair often because it is the biggest pain you could imagine… it usually takes about an hour and a half to blow dry + flat iron my hair. I was VERY hesitant about getting one of these brushes because a) I didn't want to have to hold my hair taught in the brush and b) there seemed to be mixed reviews on it's effectiveness. But with ULTA's return policy, I just had to go for it and try it out. and let me tell you, I am so glad that I did. This product is absolutely amazing. Other brushes stink because you have to hold you hair taught in the brush, but the clamp solves that problem. The clamp holds your hair in the brush GENTLY so that there is no pulling. You can put large portions of hair in the brush because the "bristles" are long (as opposed to a flat iron where you have to portion out small sections of hair). It straightened my hair in no time… took me ten minutes to do my entire head; that's right… 1.5 hours down to TEN MINUTES. After one swipe through, it leaves your hair textured enough so that I could use a curling iron to get those nice big barrel curls. If I want to go all the way straight, I just swipe the brush through again. My process is this: 1) shower at night and put in devacurl leave in conditioner and morrocan oil 2) wake up with crazy, but dry, hair and spray 'Hot Sexy Hair Protect Me' heat protection spray and then run the brush through. Ten minutes later I have sleek, straight hair!Victoria H.

The GLOSSIE Ceramic Styling Brush makes straightening my naturally curly/wavy hair much quicker and still leaves me with a smooth finish. In the past, I've used flat irons to get the smooth and straight look, however ironing sections of my hair one at a time is often time consuming. With the GLOSSIE Ceramic Styling Brush, I found I could straighten much larger sections of hair at a time and it wasn't quite as tedious. The precision press feature that holds your hair down tightly against the heated bristles was a lifesaver making this product a great combination of brush and iron. I did pre-comb/brush my hair but even then my fine hair got stuck at times in the GLOSSIE's bristles. However, it was easy to de-tangle and start again. I found I had to make multiple passes to get the straightness I desired but even with these set-backs it was still a time saver for me. It did take me a little time to get used to the bulkiness of the brush and some experimenting to see the best way to hold and use it. One thing I wish I could do with this brush was get a little closer to my scalp as I felt like the size of the brush head made it more difficult to straighten the hair closest to my head. With some maneuvering, I was able to get the top parts straight enough for my liking. The different temperature settings were nice and definitely provided enough heat. Unfortunately, I tended to touch my straightened hair a little too early without letting it cool off some first which resulted in some discomfort but no major issues. While I enjoyed using this product, it wouldn't be something I would use everyday as I usually only straighten my bangs on a daily basis so I probably would not have purchased it. While i had never heard of this brush before participating in this program, it was a great product to try. I would recommend this brush to people who straighten their hair daily as it could save them a lot of time!UpDaisy

This company is AWFUL!!!! Their product is absolute JUNK!!! This thermal brush does NOT work and their ghetto company is so thirsty for customers that have ghetto, 'broke business' policies to hijack a THIRD of your money if you return it. Purchase the Revlon or T3 trio hot brush instead. Sutra will keep $30 of your money for a return of their trashy product. It's desperate and its sad.

Lesson to you: Do not EVER EVER EVER buy anything from no-name companies unless you buy it through Amazon. Amazon will protect you from sleaze bag businesses like this.Principled Thoughts
