Best Highlights For Dark Brown Hair (2025 Update)

I really liked this kit, I've done two so far, my hair is a light brown/very dark blonde to start. I started with the H65 caramel , and the second time did the H85 champagne. Both gave good results. It does take a long time to pull the hair through the cap, especially if you do every hole, and it really helps to have someone to do the back for you. My husband did my whole head and it took us about 2 hours , and he did it pretty quick. I really like that you know you're getting 35v developer, and not just something random. Also like the leave in toner, seemed to really help take out any hint of brass. I know its not as perfect as getting it done at the salon, but I think its as close as can be, for 10 dollars you really can't beat it.Vicki

This highlighting kit is great for "virgin" hair, but if you already have highlights, I would not recommend it. I had significantly grown out roots, and didn't want to pay the price at a salon, so I attempted to do my own using this kit. The highlights ended up brassy and orange towards my roots, and certain parts of my hair turned yellow. The cap didn't allow my hair to be pulled through enough to get close to the root, and it doesn't allow you to put many near the root line, so I ended up with streaky, chunky blocks of hair–not highlights, at all. You will also definitely need someone to help you pull the hair through when you get to the back of your head. It's darn near impossible to see where to pull the hair through on your own, and I even made sharpie marks on the holes, like someone suggested a few comments back. The plastic tool that it comes with bent after maybe 10 holes, so that was a waste. Toner is supposed to help with yellow and orange brassy hair, and the toner did nothing for my hair. It's awful how expensive highlights are in a salon, but do yourself a favor and take the $11 that this costs and save it towards going to a salon. That's where I ended up anyway, so I wish I had this advice before I shelled out more money.kima124

I have used Loreals Frost design highlighting kits for quite a few years now. Its most definitely my go-to at home kit. I will say that when you choose to highlight/bleach your hair at home with a pull through cap, its a long LONG process especially if you have long hair like I do. Depending on how much of your hair you want lightend, and if you want some in the back/bottom you may need help from a friend (or in my case my fiance is actually always eager to help me, he's gotten used to it is really good at it!) Almost every time I use this kit I always end up having to leave the dye in my hair a bit longer than it suggests in the instructions. Normally if it takes too long I will get out the hair dryer blow hot air on my hair to help speed up the process. One thing that took me a long time to figure out was when I washed the dye out of my hair with the cap still on, it would hurt SO bad to take the cap off because bleach damages your hair and its wet knotted up. So, I take the conditioner included in the kit and let it sit on the highlighted hair as directed, wash out the cap glides right off, pain free! I really like that this kit comes with a toner as well in case your hair ends up too brassy/orange. I have never purchased a drugstore highlighting kit before that includes a toner. I always end up with nice cool colored highlights, and people always ask where I had my highlights done I tell them at home!!! Obviously when it comes to highlighting dyeing your own hair at home you risk it turning out a totally different color then what you wanted. Its actually something that always ends up happening to me EXCEPT when I use THIS kit. Every time I've bought used Loreals Frost Design highlighting kit my hair always turns out perfect!!alisha.s

I do like this product for in between visits to the. Salon or if I wanna add a little more at home. I like that it has a thick formula so it doesn’t get all over the place. I like that it comes with a 30vol developer. I do use it very sparingly on my crown or around my face. I do not keep one certain part so when I feel an area needs a touch up after I get home or before I’m ready to go for a full highlight. If you don’t let it process all the way your hair can be orange so you have to know what to look for. That’s why I keep it really simple and thin pieces when I do this.kimmy.k

I absolutely love L’Oréal highlight kits! They have such a great value behind them. In my opinion they are by far the best highlight kits on the market. Inexpensive and high quality products. Easy to use. I have been using for years and I highly recommend. The only downfall is I wish they were more readily available for purchase. Especially online.jen.b

I received this product and was eager to trial it. There’s nothing quite like a colour touch up to make you feel a little more refreshed and energised! The product was super easy to use and everything needed was contained in one compact box. I followed the directions with ease and all progressed to plan. The end result was reasonably true to the desired colour although my hair did end up more orange than I had anticipated. I accept this can happen with hair colours because there are so many factors that contribute to the end result. The hair colour did address my primary concern – covering the dreaded greys! The smell was not offensive as can happen with some brands and I liked the fuss free application process. A major benefit is the convenience of doing this at home at a time that suits me and a cost that is budget friendly! I have had my colour now for a week and the colour at this stage is still looking fresh with great coverage. I would suggest that anyone with thick hair or very long hair should invest in two packets and not chance a dye disaster!! I have long hair but it is very thin so one packet for me was sufficient. I received this hair dye to trial as part of the Beauty Review Crew. I have used this brand of hair dye a few times over the past couple years. In particular, I have used the shade 'Darkest brown' which is the same shade I'm trialing today. The shade has always been is a lovely vibrant colour and the colour result is similar to my natural hair colour. The dye promises to 100% grey hair coverage and it lives up to its promise. Preparing the dye for application is nice and easy. After applying the gloves that are included in the packaging, you pour the colour formula into the bottle of developer before placing the lid back on and shaking the bottle until completely mixed. It's that easy! Then starting at the roots, you evenly apply the dye. The dye goes on smoothly and, surprisingly, the dye scent isn't as strong as other brands. Other brands tend to have a strong chemical smell which makes my eyes water and nose tingle when breathing it in. Clairol have done a great job at producing a hair product with a low scent. One of the best things about Clairol's nice n' easy hair dyes is the short processing times. Unlike other brands that have a processing time of upwards to an hour to reach your desired shade, these dye have an average processing time of just 25 minutes. The short processing time means you can dye your hair during your lunch break, before a night out, or before a date, without it taking up too much of your time. The rinsing process is also quite a smooth and easy process. After applying some warm water, give your hear/head a little massage and then rinse until the water runs clear from all the dye. It normally takes around two minutes for the water to run clear. Then using the conditioning Clairol conditioning treatment that comes with the hair dye, you apply from roots to tips and leave for a couple minutes before rinsing. The conditioning treatment has a lovely scent and is nice and thick. It's almost like applying a luxurious hair mask. It glides onto the hair smoothly and evenly. After rinsing the conditioning treatment you can instantly feel how hydrated you hair feels. Dying your hair often dehydrates it and your hair can feel a little worse for wear. Clairol's hair dyes are gentle on your hair and the conditioning treatment prevents damage and keeps your hair hydrated and feeling lovely. After towel-drying my hair, I blow-dried my hair until was dry. Looking in the mirror you could instantly see how vibrant and lovely the hair colour result was, and it looked and felt really healthy. I am always so very impressed with the results every time and I often get compliments from friends and family members. As my hair grows fairly quickly, I use this product every 2-3 months to help cover grey hairs. Despite dying my hair so regularly, my hair has remained healthy and manageable, and hasn't compromised my hair in any way. The only downside I can mention is that the dye stains your skin. Normally hair spray or acetone on a cotton ball or cotton pad helps remove hair dyes from skin but I found this dye to be lot stronger and barely budged from the skin. I also tried scrubbing with soap and dishwashing detergent but the dye only faded slightly. It took a few days of scubbing before the dye faded completely. The best thing of all about Clairol's Nice n' Easy hair dyes are they cost just $9 from your local supermarket. Sometimes, you can grab them on special for just $6! SIX BUCKS! Staff Review by BC's Tamara I'm not going to lie – I have greys. Lots of them. But the Clairol Nice'n Easy Permanent Hair Dye did a mighty fine job of making them disappear! I have actually used this dye in the past, and can't recommend it enough. The range of colours on offer is wonderful as there is something there for everyone. I have dull brown hair, so usually opt for a warm shade to brighten my colour – I used the Medium Chestnut Brown 5RB. The instructions are clear and easy to follow and after spending 10 mins applying the product as thoroughly as I could, it took a simple 25 minutes to penetrate before washing it out and conditioning. The colour completely covered my greys (which was my main objective), but overall my hair looks so much healthier as it is shiny and the colour has more life to it. My favourite thing about this dye is that the colour brings out the natural highlights I have and it looks really natural. Although this 2-step process takes me 4 hours including set-up and clean-up, it is worth it. I have peace of mind that I am not putting on my body (or in the environment) any chemicals that may be toxic or disruptive. And if you do it right, it really does cover the gray and look natural. Even my hairdresser admires it. Other than the time, the only downside is it does leave a blue residue on my scalp, only noticeable on my fingernails if I scratch it. The color lasts about 4-5 weeks, same as the chemical stuff, but when it grows out it is gradually noticeable instead of a line of gray roots like with salon coloring. I will never go back. Henna is the ONLY 100% natural hair color, and this 2-step system works without leaving it looking orange.Happy mama

I purchased the Medium Brown and my hair was more than 10% gray. For shoulder length hair all you need is 1 box. It work so well that just after step 1 my grays were covered. It is all natural no chemical scent. The natural scent is earthy not overpowering. I combed out my hair to remove any tangles. I mixed step 1 with boiled distilled water to a mud paste consistency similar to a mud facial mask and let the mud like mixture cool a bit to warm and applied it to my just washed and air dried hair. I applied the muddy paste and added coconut oil to my hair to assist me with working it in I added coconut oil to my muddy hair during the application of both steps 1 and 2 to assist in working the product into my hair in order to try to incorporate it well into my hair. I left step 1 on for two and a half hours and I left step 2 on for 4 hours. I did not put on the plastic hair cap during both steps.After both steps my hair had more volume and shine. In order to maintain the results the instructions recommend repeating this process every month which I will definitely continue to do. I am very happy that I finally did it because I really did miss my natural hair color. Thank you Mother Nature for always having a solution. I am overjoyed at finding this product! After years of dyeing with 'safer' less harmful dyes, my scalp started to burn up and reject the chemicals. I really didn't think natural dyes could be effective on my mostly gray hair. I was pleasantly surprised! The colour holds so well! My natural colour is black. The dark brown dye produces a soft brown that fades gradually. The whole process takes five hours total. The indigo/ second step takes two and a half hours to set. I decided to try this product. I have black hair, which I have dyed with black hair dye to cover grays. I knew that this will lighten my hair and pull out the red. Now it's too brassy. What color can I put on this to tone it down? Blue conditioner? I was hoping for a milky brown color as the end result.Selly

I have medium brunette hair and this kit turned my hair orange. It says that people with brunette to black hair can use this product. I have used many highlighting kits by L’Oréal and had wonderful honey blonde highlighting results. I also regularly color my roots with L’Oréal, so I am not new to coloring. I bought this kit by Clairol on sale and what a mistake that was. I will only use L’Oréal from now on. Do not recommend.Stefanie

Love It. I've now used this 3 times. The first at the tips, the second up on the mids and the third was to add highlights. I used a highlighting cap and use blue conditioner every few weeks. It did not damage my hair in the slightest. I got a lot of compliments. I have natural dark brown hair and it came out an ashy/caramel color and not the slightest bit orange. I will mention that my hair was 100% virgin. There was no color on my hair when I used this…that may affect the results.Kristen

To keep it a buck, I did not want the color that Magenta and Red mixed together created. I wanted more of a burgundy color and what I got was something that looks like…sangria. I asked a professional if I were to do the color from a box, if it would create the color I wanted even though I had naturally dark brown, resembling black hair. She said, “YES! Trust me!” And so, I decided to and ended up not getting the color I wanted, 😅. However, there are some pros! -The color is super vibrant. -My hair is not as dry as I thought it’d be. It’s my first time coloring my hair and I thought my hair would be brittle, but it actually felt moisturized after the completion of dying my hair. -I didn’t use bleach and the color still came out very pigmented. You don’t always need bleach, y’all. -My curl pattern hasn’t changed at all and you could see the definition far more now that my hair is red! Overall, this hair dye was pretty good. I wanted to try the Creme of Nature or even Dark and Lovely hair brands due to less harmful chemicals, but my curls still look very healthy and shiny. I’ve currently had the hair dye for a week and the color hasn’t faded at all when I’ve washed my hair at least 3 times. Although this wasn’t the color I wanted, I am warming up to it as it does compliment my skin tone AND I have had strangers stop me and compliment how much they love the color. I would recommend this to a friend, especially a dark haired friend who wants a vibrant color without having to use bleach! Below are two photos of my hair color. I never used this product before and I’m so impressed with the result. The color is so bright and perfect I’m in love of the color. I use two tubes to color my hair because I have a lot of hair and is kind of long, and yes guys I cut off my hair too is not that long as it was but is not too short too. [brand:loreal-excellence-hair-color] is a tool in my hairdressing toolbox! This is the first color that I have used that will lift dark hair color more than a couple shades. Their entire line is meant for this purpose and this purpose only. You do use 40 volume which leaves the hair in a not so healthy condition. But luckily with the help of [brand:olaplex]  This is a thing of the past. They don’t have a huge Selection to choose from but what they do have rocks. I have used the magenta and red hot Together for an amazing combination.amanda.c

I had used Rainbow Henna before but decided to switch to Madison Reed for ease of use. I used it for a few years but really got sick of how it washed out and stained my towel and pillowcase for 3 days or more after use. My hair is usually dark brown with red highlights. Because of the amount of red left from using Madison Reed I chose black Rainbow Henna to cover over the red. The color is beautiful! It is a very dark brown. It is perfect. The red is covered and I love the rich color. I have a small amount of white hair around my temples, those were also covered. About 2 or 3 strands weren't, but I will make do better with application next time. I used coffee, apple cider vinegar and yogurt. The texture was easy to apply and left my hair feeling amazing! It hasn't stained my towel & nothing on my pillowcase. I rinsed my hair and only used conditioner. The following day I shampooed and condioned and the smell subsided. Henna is good Conditioner for hair It has been used since earlier days for beautifying hand with design and as a natural hair dye. but for coloration of hair you must apply it and cover Head with shower cap to avoid excess drying (which may cause breakage) .keep for 2 hrs at least (Avoid applying henna in cold weather or at evening time preferably at hot afternoon as henna is very cool in nature, may elevate cold and cough) you may add eggs, any your favourite oil 1 tablespoon, or yogurt for additional hair conditioning and will be easy to clean hair while wash. Use- For long hair, apply paste ( With handgloves to avoid nails and hand turning red) at centre of scalp area apply for all hair length n wrap clockwise bun of that strands and secure with extra henna paste. then continue like this for small sections immediately near first bun and wrap around first center bun, apply henna paste each time to secure bun. After 2 hrs first clean with warm water until all henna comes out then use mild shampoo to clean scalp…use old towel and comb after. while drying clean ear or any henna on neck hand face with wet tissue.iHerb Customer

Love this. I used it back in my 20s when I had to protect my hair from product and heat damage, 90's hair!. It worked incredibly then. Now 30 years later using it to cover my grays. The smell isn't that great and smell lasts a week but I don't care because it makes my hair thicker with more highlights and its natural. My normal hair is medium to light brown with reddish highlights, and about 10% white-gray. so I used the medium brown henna added 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar hot extra thick coffee, put a hotel-type disposable shower cap and left on for 2 hours. This stuff really worked for me in terms of colour and overall coverage. (Also found it didn’t cover greys but I wasn’t expecting that since the company says that it’s not meant for grey coverage so I just pluck them.) I did find it a bit drying on my hair, so I recommend an Olaplex treatment to follow up if you often have an issue with dry hair. Good news is that my hair soaks up most products, bad news is that any dye usually dries it out. I read in these reviews to use less time if you have thinner, more dry hair and I totally echo that tip. Start with 5 mins, rinse, dry, style, see how you like it. Can always add more time on follow up applications, but wait at least 4-6 week to try again. Having said all that, this product almost works TOO good. My concern in this part is for your shower, not your hair. If going with a darker colour I highly recommend applying outside of the shower, like with any other hair dye, and washing out in a stainless steel sink. The first time I used it, I applied in the shower and it stained the white walls and white shower curtain. And also stained the label on the bottle! I thought my partner was going to KILL me (his house) and I had a mini panic attack while praying I could get it to come off the shower walls (white plastic tub surround). Rubbing with my fingers was not cutting it. I was able to scrub it off using a powder cleaner, but if you want to save yourself the anxiety, just apply like a regular dye, and wash out in the sink. If you don’t have that option, or would rather risk your shower over your bathroom, just have a good cleaner on hand to clean spots immediately off the walls. DO NOT apply in the shower if you have light-coloured tile! You will never be able to get it out of light-coloured grout, which is the stuff between the tiles holding them to the wall. Do not risk it or you might be paying to re-tile the shower and/or won’t be getting your damage deposit back!GenoaK

I received a free full size sample of the dpHUE Gloss+ Semi-permanent hair color and I am a fan! I am a licensed cosmetologist and I usually stay away from anything that isn't used in a professional salon setting but, after a recent color appointment left my hair over-processed and brittle, as well as too blonde I was excited to give this semipermanent hair color and deep conditioner a try. (We just moved across the country and I don't have the time right now to make it to the supply house for a toner and conditioning treatment) I received the color medium brown. The application process was so easy, I shampooed and conditioned my hair in the shower, stepped to the side and towel dried my hair and combed it out, then applied this semipermanent hair color. I left it on for the remainder of my shower, approximately 7-10 minutes. The pigment is wonderful and rich, and it leaves beautiful warm tones in your hair. If you don't wear gloves to apply, make sure you have soap on standby to clean your hands or it will stain! This product left my hair silky smooth and shiny. I was very pleased with the golden brown color it toned my hair to. I was even more pleased to see that it did not slough off on my flat iron or my white pillow cases. I've already shampooed my hair once and the color stuck around. I can tell it's lighter and that it'll continue to lighten as I shampoo, but that's the point of semipermanent hair color. I think if I was in a pinch and needed to tone my hair between color appointments I would definitely consider buying this product. I'd also recommend this product for friends or family who need a quick fix to tone down and/or condition their hair.Kyra

I loved the ease of not having to mix this product and having both the option to apply in-shower to damp hair or to dry. I used the dark brown which was perfectly suitable for my hair color. For the first application I used the in-shower on damp hair method. This sounded like no brainer… I didn't have to worry about the product getting on anything, I was already going to wash my hair anyway, and I could quickly and easily wash my hands to prevent the pigment from staining my hands… Right? Yes, to all but the latter!!! The company does warn that darker shades can stain the skin but I never imagined that it would stain my hands the second it made contact. I had to scrub my hands with a pumice stone until they were sore and raw in order to get the stains off. You have been warned 🙂 Now fearful of what was the underestimated power of this product, I only left it on my hair for approximately 5 minutes. The results were great, as I did notice my color was a beautiful, deeper, richer version of its self prior to the treatment. Thankfully, my hair is already shiny so I am unable to review that aspect of the products claim. After 2 weeks I thought it only be fair to try this product using the dry method and left it on for the same duration of time for a most accurate comparison… This time, I used gloves 🙂 The results were equally as positive and effective without the stress of staining. Both applications were super easy, as there was no mixing, the product comes in an easy to use bottle with a pump dispenser and the formula is rich and thick making for an effortless application. I would highly recommend this product for anyone looking for more dimension and an easy at home semipermanent color either in between visits to the salon or just to give your locks an extra boost of shine and depth. It has been a long time since I had done a cap highlight on myself but I was open to switching up my hair color and trying out Revlon’s Color Effects Frost Glow. I used the smaller hook end of the tool because I wanted a subtle highlight. It took a few tries before I got the method down for pulling the hair through the cap. I think it is really important to keep the tool flat to your head with the hook pointed up, to get the best results without pulling at your hair. Because I didn’t want a dramatic change, I planned to only pulled hair through the circled holes and only in the front and crown portions of the cap. I found it much too difficult to pull hair from any farther back on my head, so there was no chance I was going to be able to accomplish an all-over highlight, even if I wanted to. I would recommend having someone help you pull hair through the cap if you are going for a full head of highlights and definitely if you are new to cap highlights. The mixing and coloring process was super easy. The mixture did not smell harsh which was definitely appreciated. I would prefer a better fitting pair of gloves to wear. As you apply the mixture and make sure each strand is saturated, the gloves start to slide off and get in the way. I intended to check my hair after 10 minutes but my timer never went off, so it was 15 minutes before I checked. When I checked it, I panicked because it looked very blonde and brassy compared to my chocolate cherry brown hair color. After rinsing it off and shampooing and conditioning with the included toning shampoo and conditioner, I felt a little bit better about the color. It still looked very light (mostly in front) when I started to dry my hair with my Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer. After styling, other than looking a little more 2000’s chunky highlight at the front of my face than I would have liked, I am very happy with the look! I was actually pleasantly surprised that the color chart on the box was accurate! It would be nice to get a bigger packet of the toning conditioner and shampoo. I have shoulder-length fine hair and used the whole packet. Even putting two of each packet would be beneficial especially to those with long or thick hair. I could possibly see myself using this kit in the future, though I would probably force my husband to help pull hair through the cap. From hook to styling, the whole process took me about 3 1/2 hours. It gets a little chaotic trying to hold a mirror and angle yourself just right to reach all of the holes on the cap. If you’re looking to save yourself a hundred (or more) dollars and you have the time and patience, I would definitely recommend this Revlon Color Effects kit!devon.g

Do you ever get tired of dropping $250+ at the salon for highlights? Especially when your hair grows super fast like mine and you have to go often? I’ll be honest, at 13, I had a very bad experience with box dye (haven’t we all?) and swore off it ever since. Well, with very limited skills and a bit more confidence, I gave this box a try. I figured, “it’s summer. If it goes bad there is always the sun.” To my surprise, It didn’t go bad at all, not even close! I actually have some bomb, salon style highlights! I love that this kit comes with a cap and hook. It took a few tries, but once I got the hang of hooking and pulling the hair through I actually found it quite fun and relaxing. The cap goes on nice and tight and will muffle your hearing while it’s on, so I totally suggest doing this when everyone is in bed and you don’t need to really hear anything for a while. The cap is magical because it really does an amazing job at protecting the rest of your hair. There is literally no way to end up with bleach drips or leopard spots on any other part of your hair. This kit is basically fool proof. I pulled my hair through every single hole of the cap. My husband helped me with the very back, as I didn’t want to miss any hair underneath because I wear my hair up often. He had no problems with the hook either. (Because my hair turned out so well, he now thinks he is a master colorist 🙄) My hair is VERY thick. I was worried that I wouldn’t have enough dye with just 1 box, but to my surprise I had just enough to coat every single strand. The color is very easy to mix. Just empty the contents of a powder packet into a bottle containing liquid and shake vigorously. I really appreciate that I didn’t have to worry about having color on too long in one spot and not long enough in others because it looks goes on at the same time, another reason why the cap is so great. I like the smell of hair bleach and always have. This has that smell, but it is very light and not overpowering. My roots were quite dark, so I left this on for 50 minutes checking every 5. I absolutely did NOT want my hair looking orange (hello flashbacks from teenage years!) I was a bit scared to remove the cap because I felt like it was going to pull my hair out at the roots, but it came off with no issues or hair loss. I really love the purple shampoo and conditioner that was provided in the box. It smelled wonderful and made it very easy to get all the product out. I do comb my conditioner through my hair and I did that with this. My hair didn’t feel dry, crisp or brittle at all. The conditioner had a very nice slip and hydrated very well. I’m incredibly pleased with the results overall. My hair has absolutely zero orange tones to it at all. There are so many baby highlights that my hair doesn’t look streaky, chunky or strange. The strands blend in so well giving my hair an overall natural look. My hair feels super soft and healthy too! I was worried it would get brittle because I left the dye on right up until the max time, but I haven’t had a single issue with my hair falling out, breaking or feeling fried. This kit changed my perception of box dye forever! It was so easy to use (you literally can’t mess this up!), made my hair look great and saved me a ton of money! I have always been a fan of Revlon and I have always utilized this product consistently for many years. I attempted to use the product today and was extremely disappointed that they changed the "hook" that is included in the box. It is not as referenced in the "included" items as it has been reconfigured to now be added on the end of the "mixer" versus as a separate item and seems to be cheaper plastic. It bent the very first time I tried it and only got more flexible after only 3 hair pulls (I have very short hair) and I realized it was not usable. I even tried to fix the hook and make my own "notch" several times with no success so unless you have your own "hook" this kit is not usable. It is extremely frustrating to plan to highlight my hair, get everything set up and then realize I can't use the kit due to changes in quality.Disappointed

I used to use this in the darker shade years ago before it stopped being available in the UK so I was excited about trying it again for my lockdown root issues. It was a bit daunting how dark the all-over colour made my hair, covering up my roots and previous highlights. But it was actually very close to my natural, dark ash blond hair colour. I followed the instructions and let that dry fully before patiently taking small sections of my hair from each side and rubbing the blue, highlighting paste in well. I am delighted with the results, although I have had to use a violet hair treatment to stop brassiness. I have included some photos. I took AGES, mixing the paste really well and taking thinner and thicker sections in the areas the instructions suggested for framing my face and I reckon that patience paid off. I followed the instructions exactly as written and I even put the anti brass conditioner for 7 mins instead of 5. But my highlights all came out orangey instead of blonde. The base color was so strong that it hurt my scalp even after 2 days! Terrible mistake of trying this highlight and color product and I have to suffer with this terrible brassy orangey color for another week before I go to the salon as my scalp is still hurting from the base color ( my highlights was 1/4 inch away from roots so I am sure it was the base color that was too strong ) worst part is that my gray is still visible ! Though I normally use John Frieda Foam haircolor to due my hair, I like to have some highlights in Summer. I used to lay $06 the salon to get Caramel highlights out into my Auburn red hair and the result was gorgeous. Paying salon prices was my last resort after trying a few at home highlighting kits which were all disastrous. This is the first one to come out that gives me the same quality results as paying outrageous salon prices. And I actually love the base color of the permanent hair due more than the cold I get from John Frieda. Anyway once I dye my whole head with the base color. I wait until the following day or 2 to do the highlights. This kit comes with Praline highlights which looks almost exactly like the Caramel ones I loved so much against the red. This kit is the first one to make applying the highlights very simple and still ends up with amazing results. You can make your highlights however you prefer… Whether you like chunky highlights, or just face framing ones, or highlights throughout all your hair in thin strips. You can brush them on easily with the brush that is petite enough to give you great control or the finger brush which I prefer. You are able to easily see where you have already applied Highlights and then it's just a matter of time and rinse. Would have given 5 stars except, as others have mentioned, this shade is not a “light” blonde unless in bright, natural light. Indoors or in darker light, it appears dark blonde—so be aware before you use that it may come out looking more like a level 7, not a level 8. I knew this going in but wish they’d re-label their blonde series to match how it actually turns out. Anyways…..

The demi-permanent is easy to use and works almost like a toner—I’d been using T14 toner and, due to the developer, was having problems with it lifting areas of my hair I didn’t want lifted. So I watched a lot of videos and read a lot of reviews on the Wella demi 8a and decided to give it a shot, and it did exactly what I needed it to do—it toned my hair, leaving it a cooler tone but still with a little depth and warmth while leaving my roots alone (no hot roots!).

Will definitely use again but may mix the 10NA and 8A together, as there doesn’t appear to be a level 9 in the demi-permanent line.J W

I was beyond excited when my gi-normous WELLA Colorcharm Demi-Perm Color VoxBox was FINALLY delivered! When I opened it I honesty could not believe ALL the products that were included; 2 boxes of Wella Colorcharm Demi-Permanent Hair Color Cream (3N Meduim Neutral Brown), 1-7.8oz bottle of 10 Volume Wella Cream Developer, 1 application brush, 1 plastic mixing bowl and a pair of gloves to get the job done😉. As far as packaging goes, everything definitely has a salon quality feel to it. The boxes of hair color offer this new color-coded packaging for "at-a-glance navigation and selection," which seriously makes finding your color so easy it's fool proof! Inside each box the color is packaged in a gorgeous teal colored metal tube (much like a toothpaste tube) with white text and a white twist top. The Cream Developer comes in an almost clear, frosted plastic bottle with black and red text on it. Honestly, its packaging really is very minimalistic, no real wow factor. Both the brush and bowl are simple black plastic, nothing is embossed or written on either item. The gloves included are, thankfully, not the plastic bag type of gloves. They are basic "rubber" gloves, nothing fancy…just something to protect your hands. Ok, let's get into the product formulas. What truly has me obsessed with this hair color and makes it so special is that the formula is enriched with Shea Butter! Which I think is a result of being able to apply this color to WET hair rather than dry so I feel it makes it soooo much easier to work with. So to me you really can't go wrong with this color! It smells good, looks awesome, feels amazing and results last up to 24 washes (depending on hair type). Okay- the burgundy color this dyed my hair was not anything like the description “light copper” nor the examples of vibrant red on the back of the box. I normally have my hair a vibrant red (almost the same as the color shows on the box), so if anything I was hoping to touch up my roots and ends. Unfortunately this was waaaaay off. Now it’s not necessarily “bad” if you’re going for something more natural- but that is definitely not really my style. I also went river rafting the day after dying it and everyone though I was bleeding because of how much color kept coming out when being splashed. I notice red pigment on the sides of my face often if I get super sweaty or wet, and it has been over a week. I will say that as time went on the color became a bit more vibrant, but I think that could have just been my underlying color coming through. Overall I loved that it didn’t stink or damage my hair, and there was plenty of dye in one box to do my whole head- but I will stick with my tried and true Runway Red by Vidal Sassoon.kelly.b

this is very similar to a wella t18. it's a light pale ashy blonde toner. definitely not what i would consider to be "pearl" by any means. looks purple/grey when it goes on, develops fast so watch your time. i mixed this with a 10 volume& put it on prelightened level 10. first i did a root smudge with a level 8 and then added the toner and blended downward where the two colors met to transition. it turned out nice but i could have gotten the same result with wella t18 ??????? was hoping for something a little more "pearl" like… like luminous or something i don't know… but i ended up with an ashy blonde. which is fine just not exactly the result i was hoping to get. i love that it's 3 oz though. most toners are only 1.5-2 oz so you get a lot more bang for your buck. i bought 2 tubes and mixed them 1:1.5 and had plenty left over for my extensions.?.

During my first application the product never changed color which I thought was weird, had it on for 20 minutes before I decided to take it off. I tried again mixing a little bit of developer and rubbing it. Immediate change in color. I quickly started applying it starting at my roots and used my fingers to rub it down to the ends of my hair. I wanted to go forna darker gray so I kept it on for about 30 minutes. As you can see from the photos my roots turned into a blue that transition to a blue gray and finally my ends turned into a brown gray color. This was due to my ends not being properly bleached. I rebleached my ends and the toner came off within 5 minutes. Kept it on longer to try to get as much of the orange as I could and am currently toning the ends again. Overall the color I have so far I really like and I've already bought another tube as a back up for the future.M.

I have been in the hair industry for 25 yrs. In that time I have used many professional color lines. Pravana has always been my first choice. They are consistently introducing new colors. I currently lighten my hair and the Pravana Express Tones are the best way to get the blondes I like. This time I used Smokey Silver and Violet. It cooled my blonde nicely. I received this product and was eager to trial it. There’s nothing quite like a colour touch up to make you feel a little more refreshed and energised! The product was super easy to use and everything needed was contained in one compact box. I followed the directions with ease and all progressed to plan. The end result was reasonably true to the desired colour although my hair did end up more orange than I had anticipated. I accept this can happen with hair colours because there are so many factors that contribute to the end result. The hair colour did address my primary concern – covering the dreaded greys! The smell was not offensive as can happen with some brands and I liked the fuss free application process. A major benefit is the convenience of doing this at home at a time that suits me and a cost that is budget friendly! I have had my colour now for a week and the colour at this stage is still looking fresh with great coverage. I received this hair dye to trial as part of the Beauty Review Crew. I have used this brand of hair dye a few times over the past couple years. In particular, I have used the shade 'Darkest brown' which is the same shade I'm trialing today. The shade has always been is a lovely vibrant colour and the colour result is similar to my natural hair colour. The dye promises to 100% grey hair coverage and it lives up to its promise. Preparing the dye for application is nice and easy. After applying the gloves that are included in the packaging, you pour the colour formula into the bottle of developer before placing the lid back on and shaking the bottle until completely mixed. It's that easy! Then starting at the roots, you evenly apply the dye. The dye goes on smoothly and, surprisingly, the dye scent isn't as strong as other brands. Other brands tend to have a strong chemical smell which makes my eyes water and nose tingle when breathing it in. Clairol have done a great job at producing a hair product with a low scent. One of the best things about Clairol's nice n' easy hair dyes is the short processing times. Unlike other brands that have a processing time of upwards to an hour to reach your desired shade, these dye have an average processing time of just 25 minutes. The short processing time means you can dye your hair during your lunch break, before a night out, or before a date, without it taking up too much of your time. The rinsing process is also quite a smooth and easy process. After applying some warm water, give your hear/head a little massage and then rinse until the water runs clear from all the dye. It normally takes around two minutes for the water to run clear. Then using the conditioning Clairol conditioning treatment that comes with the hair dye, you apply from roots to tips and leave for a couple minutes before rinsing. The conditioning treatment has a lovely scent and is nice and thick. It's almost like applying a luxurious hair mask. It glides onto the hair smoothly and evenly. After rinsing the conditioning treatment you can instantly feel how hydrated you hair feels. Dying your hair often dehydrates it and your hair can feel a little worse for wear. Clairol's hair dyes are gentle on your hair and the conditioning treatment prevents damage and keeps your hair hydrated and feeling lovely. After towel-drying my hair, I blow-dried my hair until was dry. Looking in the mirror you could instantly see how vibrant and lovely the hair colour result was, and it looked and felt really healthy. I am always so very impressed with the results every time and I often get compliments from friends and family members. As my hair grows fairly quickly, I use this product every 2-3 months to help cover grey hairs. Despite dying my hair so regularly, my hair has remained healthy and manageable, and hasn't compromised my hair in any way. The only downside I can mention is that the dye stains your skin. Normally hair spray or acetone on a cotton ball or cotton pad helps remove hair dyes from skin but I found this dye to be lot stronger and barely budged from the skin. I also tried scrubbing with soap and dishwashing detergent but the dye only faded slightly. It took a few days of scubbing before the dye faded completely. The best thing of all about Clairol's Nice n' Easy hair dyes are they cost just $9 from your local supermarket. Sometimes, you can grab them on special for just $6! SIX BUCKS! Staff Review by BC's Tamara I'm not going to lie – I have greys. Lots of them. But the Clairol Nice'n Easy Permanent Hair Dye did a mighty fine job of making them disappear! I have actually used this dye in the past, and can't recommend it enough. The range of colours on offer is wonderful as there is something there for everyone. I have dull brown hair, so usually opt for a warm shade to brighten my colour – I used the Medium Chestnut Brown 5RB. The instructions are clear and easy to follow and after spending 10 mins applying the product as thoroughly as I could, it took a simple 25 minutes to penetrate before washing it out and conditioning. The colour completely covered my greys (which was my main objective), but overall my hair looks so much healthier as it is shiny and the colour has more life to it. My favourite thing about this dye is that the colour brings out the natural highlights I have and it looks really natural. The quality of this product is very good. I used the correct concentration of developer to color ratio on a test spot. it did not lift my hair. I haven't been able to achieve HI lift color ( any brand)( and I have tried every brand) on my hair since I have had more grey hair because my dark level 6 has gotten darker with hormonal changes. That being said I believe this product is a good value and is high quality, but unfortunately i cannot use high lift colors on my hair any longer . I went back to my stylist for partial foils with bleach is the only way to lighten my resistant dark hormonal hair and tone the grey highlights to blonde. It has been a long time since I had done a cap highlight on myself but I was open to switching up my hair color and trying out Revlon’s Color Effects Frost Glow. I used the smaller hook end of the tool because I wanted a subtle highlight. It took a few tries before I got the method down for pulling the hair through the cap. I think it is really important to keep the tool flat to your head with the hook pointed up, to get the best results without pulling at your hair. Because I didn’t want a dramatic change, I planned to only pulled hair through the circled holes and only in the front and crown portions of the cap. I found it much too difficult to pull hair from any farther back on my head, so there was no chance I was going to be able to accomplish an all-over highlight, even if I wanted to. I would recommend having someone help you pull hair through the cap if you are going for a full head of highlights and definitely if you are new to cap highlights. The mixing and coloring process was super easy. The mixture did not smell harsh which was definitely appreciated. I would prefer a better fitting pair of gloves to wear. As you apply the mixture and make sure each strand is saturated, the gloves start to slide off and get in the way. I intended to check my hair after 10 minutes but my timer never went off, so it was 15 minutes before I checked. When I checked it, I panicked because it looked very blonde and brassy compared to my chocolate cherry brown hair color. After rinsing it off and shampooing and conditioning with the included toning shampoo and conditioner, I felt a little bit better about the color. It still looked very light (mostly in front) when I started to dry my hair with my Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer. After styling, other than looking a little more 2000’s chunky highlight at the front of my face than I would have liked, I am very happy with the look! I was actually pleasantly surprised that the color chart on the box was accurate! It would be nice to get a bigger packet of the toning conditioner and shampoo. I have shoulder-length fine hair and used the whole packet. Even putting two of each packet would be beneficial especially to those with long or thick hair. I could possibly see myself using this kit in the future, though I would probably force my husband to help pull hair through the cap. From hook to styling, the whole process took me about 3 1/2 hours. It gets a little chaotic trying to hold a mirror and angle yourself just right to reach all of the holes on the cap. Do you ever get tired of dropping $250+ at the salon for highlights? Especially when your hair grows super fast like mine and you have to go often? I’ll be honest, at 13, I had a very bad experience with box dye (haven’t we all?) and swore off it ever since. Well, with very limited skills and a bit more confidence, I gave this box a try. I figured, “it’s summer. If it goes bad there is always the sun.” To my surprise, It didn’t go bad at all, not even close! I actually have some bomb, salon style highlights! I love that this kit comes with a cap and hook. It took a few tries, but once I got the hang of hooking and pulling the hair through I actually found it quite fun and relaxing. The cap goes on nice and tight and will muffle your hearing while it’s on, so I totally suggest doing this when everyone is in bed and you don’t need to really hear anything for a while. The cap is magical because it really does an amazing job at protecting the rest of your hair. There is literally no way to end up with bleach drips or leopard spots on any other part of your hair. This kit is basically fool proof. I pulled my hair through every single hole of the cap. My husband helped me with the very back, as I didn’t want to miss any hair underneath because I wear my hair up often. He had no problems with the hook either. (Because my hair turned out so well, he now thinks he is a master colorist 🙄) My hair is VERY thick. I was worried that I wouldn’t have enough dye with just 1 box, but to my surprise I had just enough to coat every single strand. The color is very easy to mix. Just empty the contents of a powder packet into a bottle containing liquid and shake vigorously. I really appreciate that I didn’t have to worry about having color on too long in one spot and not long enough in others because it looks goes on at the same time, another reason why the cap is so great. I like the smell of hair bleach and always have. This has that smell, but it is very light and not overpowering. My roots were quite dark, so I left this on for 50 minutes checking every 5. I absolutely did NOT want my hair looking orange (hello flashbacks from teenage years!) I was a bit scared to remove the cap because I felt like it was going to pull my hair out at the roots, but it came off with no issues or hair loss. I really love the purple shampoo and conditioner that was provided in the box. It smelled wonderful and made it very easy to get all the product out. I do comb my conditioner through my hair and I did that with this. My hair didn’t feel dry, crisp or brittle at all. The conditioner had a very nice slip and hydrated very well. I’m incredibly pleased with the results overall. My hair has absolutely zero orange tones to it at all. There are so many baby highlights that my hair doesn’t look streaky, chunky or strange. The strands blend in so well giving my hair an overall natural look. My hair feels super soft and healthy too! I was worried it would get brittle because I left the dye on right up until the max time, but I haven’t had a single issue with my hair falling out, breaking or feeling fried. Very easy to use just follow instructions. I use 3/4 dark brown and 1/4 black for darker color. Lasts me around 6wks. I keep in hair 4 hrs in plastic hair cap with cotton hair turban over it. I use med- high heat from hand held hair dryer intermittently for 10 mins than again towards the end of 4 hrs. Use to sit under hair dryer for 45 mins but makes my hair color more copper red. I rinse out with water then use conditioner with strong scent. Henna has a earthy, lingering smell. Use shampoo in 48 hrs. Also use whole egg and olive oil in the mixture for protein. This is by far my favorite natural hair color- no chemicals!iHerb Customer

I tint my eyebrows with dark brown henna. It works for me but please note that it is advised to avoid using it on your face, especially near your eyes, so if you choose to do it is AT YOUR OWN RISK. I mix a small amount with a drop of hot water and leave to stand for 30 mins for the pigment to be released. Then I use an angled liner/eyebrow brush to apply it in a thick layer on my brows, making sure that all the hairs lie flat and are covered by the henna mixture. I leave it on my eyebrows for 30 mins, then use a wet washcloth to remove it and wash my skin thoroughly. It makes my light brown eyebrows dark brown, and lasts a week. The colour looks so natural, not reddish at all. After I do this I can see that my brows are actually much thicker than they normally look because the henna darkens the lighter eyebrow roots and tiny hairs. The package is cute and recyclable. It seems of high quality henna, the composition is all natural no metallic salts. It is for frequent use and appropriate for all scalps and ages. The size is enough for 2 applications, my hair length reaches my shoulders. I have sensitive scalp and it suits me perfectly. The scent is of henna leaves, it is gracy and earthy but I can stand it, what I do I add few drops of rose water or any essential oil suitable for hair.
