Best Mousse For 3A Curly Hair (2025 Update)

I’ve tried so many different gels, mousses, creams, oils, to enhance my poor little damaged waves and I always come back to this. My hair started getting wavier in my teens but I just didn’t take care of my hair very much so my little waves were not flourishing as they could’ve. This product definitely helped enhance them while nourishing them to lock in my conditioner. My hair is slowly graduating from very damaged 2a to relatively damaged 2b hair! I love this product. It locks in your conditioner and adds that moisture you need while sealing up your waves. I like to put a little conditioner on my hair while it’s still really wet from the shower, then comb through my hair with a brush (if I use my fingers like I’m supposed to then the top of my hair at the roots gets really wonky so I have to use a wider wet brush to get some of it normal) then I put this stuff in and I scrunch it up and put it in my little hair towel and I’m done! It works it’s magic, I take off the towel and go to bed!Alli

I have fine, low-density 2C-3A curls and generally follow CGM, but I wanted to try a new mousse because it's still not spring and I'm super bored! I wish I'd looked at the ingredients more closely before buying this mousse, though, because it contains propane, which honestly just freaks me out. I still tried it because I spent money on it, but I wasn't super impressed. The mousse is ***VERY*** thick, so I mixed very small amounts with water before scrunching it into my hair. After diffusing and scrunching out the crunch, my curls were actually very well-defined and had good volume, but even though I used VERY little – an amount that was maybe the size of a plum for my entire head of hair (falls between jawline and shoulder) – my roots felt extremely gummy and gross. I know it's the mousse because the only other product I used was the ultra-light leave-in I've been using for years. I can't imagine being able to use much less product, though, just because of how the mousse comes out of the can. So overall, it does define curls, it may leave a gummy residue (my hair may really be just too fine), and it contains scary ingredients. The scent is also pleasant, but very strong and appears to last (I did my hair hours ago and I still smell like coconut). I wouldn't buy this again, but I'll probably save this as a back-up product in case I run out of my holy grails – and stay far away from open flames, yikes.CB

I was quite looking forward to using this most from all my purchases. However, I was quite disappointed. It is more of a foam not mousse. The hold is not there and my hair is low porosity type 2b hair and i did not find it reducing frizz either. I pair this mousse with the Curl Enhancing Smoothie from the same product line and they work really well together! I section my hair and evenly distribute the Smoothie, then I use this Mousse to focus on my ends. Finally blowdry with a diffuser attachment. When I use both products together my curls clump together nicely and my ends stay frizz-free. I can also use the Mousse on its own for a more natural/less defined curl. Wow! Amazing ingredients and quality. I am so lucky to have found this amazing products. I use it after washing my hair on a damper hair, my hair feels very soft and settled down. I am happy to be able to help with the projects of reinvest back to women in Africa. The scent is very good and the bottle is very easy to use. I shake it a little to get all ingredients to mingle. The package was received in a perfect condition nicely wrapped with paper in a thick cardboard box. No item was moving freely in this box which is great. With 3b curls that are dry, coarse, long, tangly and graying…I've been struggling lately. I want so badly to keep my hair long and grow it longer than I've ever had the patience to. I purchased this Ouidad VitalCurl mousse today (last one on the shelf!), because I was desperately trying to just get my hair to look good. I got home with my new product and hit the shower right away. After washing/conditioning I put a bit of my previously purchased Ouidad VitalCurl Tress Effects Gel in my palm and added a a nice dollop of this mousse on top and mixed it together until no foam remained and I was left with a wonderfully slippery gel-consistency. I repeated the process once more to make sure I coated everything. I used an Olivia Garden brush to distribute the product and let it dry naturally. It didn't take as long to fully dry as when I use my gel with other hair creams and my hair had a cast that was so perfect it still looked wet when it was fully dry. I was so happy with the results that I feel like I can let this unruly mom keep on growing. At least my ponytail would look good and not a frizzy mess like it usually does. This is THE one product from Ouidad that I feel I can't do without. Granted, I haven't used it by itself but when a curly girl finds her perfect recipe, it's a challenge to stray from it for fear of ruining the outcome. As a side note, I have used the gel mentioned above by itself and I loved the curl formation, however, it's a very foamy gel once I start applying it and it makes a squooshing noise and turns white. If your hair loves the Tress Effects Gel, try mixing it with this amazing Tress Effects VitalCurl Mousse. I hope you'll have the amazing results I got with this cocktail. HG status!Happylovejoy

I've Purchased 3 bottles already! I'm new to the wavy/curly hair game and when I tell you this is the only product that has done what I needed it to do….I've tried at least 3 other hair mousses and none of them compare. The ONLY reason I did not give 5 stars was because its fairly a pricier hair mousse and runs out VERY quickly. 1 bottle would last me a month and I usually scrunch in my hair 2-3 times a week.Janel K.

This Mouse has given my curls more volume and definition than any other curly products I've tried. It's my go to product now. I apply root to ends, scrunching and diffuse dry upside down. Just the right amount of crunch hold that can be scrunched out for soft curls. Love it!Sally D.

I have tried numerous expensive hair mousse. This is the best one for curly hair. My curls are soft and bouncy. I let my hair air dry. Highly recommend it.Rebecca

I bought this to try after using the curl talk cream and gel religiously for a while which I LOVE. I have mostly type 2b/c hair with some 3A pieces and don't usually have a problem with definition/volume, but this pretty much gave me neither just made my hair frizzy and I really don't like the way it feels to the touch. It leaves a pretty strong cast that is difficult to get out even when scrunching with oil and if you live in a super humid place like me, then so much humidity will make your hair crunchy all over again. I ignored the reviews in hopes that maybe it would work for me to simplify my routine, but I wish I had just repurchased my tried and true instead. I honestly prefer just my hair air dried with only a light leave in (pretty loose waves-not like what I get with the cream/gel but doable) to what this gives me. I'm gunna try to power through and finish this but I have a feeling I won't. Listen to the reviews and just save yourself the time and money it's not worth the like 2% chance this will actually work for you. Although I think if you have super fine, extremely loose waves and you reallllyyyy struggle with volume this may work for you. Maybe. Possibly.Mayham27

Very sticky mousse! Dispensing this foam and rubbing it between my hands felt like I had just opened a bottle of hair spray and poured it into my hands. I couldn't believe how sticky this stuff was! I used a very small amount, applied to my roots first and the combed the rest through my hair with my fingers. After scrunching my hair, washing my hands and blow drying on the lowest setting with a diffuser I was left with wet-looking, crunchy curls. Trying to reactivate the next day by misting my hair with a little water and letting air dry I was left with really dry, hard hair feeling like I had used lots of hair spray. Couldn't get my fingers through it, no way a comb or brush would make it. So happy to wash this stuff out of my hair. Throwing this in the trash and will look for something else. Probably the worst hair product I have ever used and that's saying a lot!Debby

I have low porosity, medium density wavy/looser curly hair. The bottom part of my hair has tighter ringlets/curls while the hair closer to my crown is a bit looser and tends to be weighed down or fall. I use this after applying leave-in and curl cream on wet hair and scrunch in! If I’m using gel, I don’t usually use this since my hair doesn’t really need both! It smells really good (the entire line does!) and it doesn’t weigh my hair down! It’s really easy to emulsify, you don’t need a lot of product. It helps control my frizz and defines my curls much better and it’s so easy to refresh day 2-3 hair with this product too!maria.m

I first discovered Oribe years ago through Birchbox and have been a super fan ever since. The Curl Shaping Mousse smells, like all Oribe products, divine and the benefits don’t stop there. My curls are bouncy, healthy and shiny looking and best of all, feel hydrated and so full. You really only need about a half-dollar dized dollop (depending on the length of your hair. Mine is long – to the middle of my back) so the bottle lasts a decent amount of time. Yes it's expensive, BUT it's also the best curling mousse I've ever tried. The VOLUME and hold alone make it a must-have for me, but on top of that it's great to have it in your hair from the day before when you're refreshing your day-two curls. Of course I use it with a curl cream and light defining gel as well, but when my hair is longer I'm excited to try it just by itself and see what kind of mane I get. I have wavy hair after 1/2 a lifetime of straight hair. I never know how to deal with it. It isn't straight & if I wear it straight it looks like a wig. I have literally tried EVERYTHING for wavy and curly hair but I am always looking off the holy grail. I decided to go back to this again today and my hair, which my stylist added layers & took weight out for more texture, looks fantastic! & the waves turn into curls and actually last! I don't know why I stopped using this but I am buying another can of it right now & I am going to stockpile it. Don't use too much. I heard other reviews and videos rave about this mousse and had to try it. I have to say, they are right. I have fine texture, low porosity natural hair. My hair is short, but when stretched the back comes to my collar bone and the front comes to the end of my nose (to give you a reference). I get good definition using a gel, but this product really defined my hair, and I had more body. Body is a problem for those of us with fine hair. My curls lasted 4 days, especially in the top which is longer. My hair is shorter on the sides and since I sleep on my side the definition fades sooner. I still had a little definition on my sides day 4, but the top still had curls. The first time I used it I only used a moisturizing deep conditioner and the mousse. It did great defining my curls, but left my hair very dry. The next time I used a moisturizing deep conditioner, leave-in conditioner, a moisturizing gel, and a sealing oil with the mousse. Sounds like a lot, but this is the process I have to use every wash day to keep my hair moisturized for 3 days. I did not have any problems with dry hair at all this time. This mousse has become part of my weekly regimen.Breezinby

I have thick heavy waves/curls. The product worked well when I used it with a leave in conditioner. The day I was in a rush and didn't put a leave in my hair was course and felt dehydrated. It doesn't help to clump your curls on it's own, but was easy to style and mold my curls with my brush. Dried quickly and smelled good. I didn't get a chance to use it for a long period of time to see the overall quality. The bottle untwisted just enough while under my sink and spilled. Luckily I had it in a container. The bottle easily untwist. You should keep the product right side up and make sure it doesn't knock over. Unfortunately it's the bottle quality that keeps me from buying this again. I did hope to see how the long term use would go for my hair. Hope my review helps you make your decision.Daniella

I have a short natural tapered cut and the mousse works best went I finger twirl the top and front. I love the slip and the shine. Even though the hold is soft – it survives my sweaty workouts. As long as I don’t touch my hair and let it air dry – it will last 5-6 days with minor touch-ups. This has become my sole and primary styler!GeeMilli

Been using this brand a couple years now on the advice of my hairstylist. My hair is healthier, more manageable than ever. I've tried other root boosters and they dry my hair out or are too sticky. This one does not do that. It doesn't take a lot of product to do the job either. A little goes a long way,which is another bonus! I love this volumizer! The “pump spray button” somewhat broke which was frustrating at first but ended up working in my favor. Now I put a little bit on my hands and rub into my roots making it feel much lighter but still volumized. And you can tell a difference with my fine hair. It’s great! I wanted to like this, but I just don’t. It leaves your hair feeling dirty and crusty the same way a sea salt mousse would. I use mouse in my hair quite often. I like the way gives my hair and curls bounce without stiffness. This one though whether your hair is clean or not, leaves your hair feeling dry, dirty and crusty. It’s supposed to be for dry curly hair. it’s supposed to soften, defined and volumize with a flexible hold. well it doesn’t hold flexibly. actually, after you put it in just makes your hair feel like straw. My first impression is I love the packaging the blue and gold is very pretty. I also like the smell. It’s a really strong coconut scent. So if your not into strong or coconut fragrances I wouldn’t recommend this line of products from Maui Moisture. First I used this mousse first on my daughters tightly coiled hair along with the gel and it worked okay but nothing to rave about it defined the coils and gave a nice shine. The second day however I noticed her hair had so many flakes I had to wash it out. I would say that I will not use this again for her because it has somewhat of a drying effect on naturally coiled hair. When I used it on my hair I didn’t like the way it felt going on. It felt kinda stiff and drying so I didn’t use on my full head. I would not recommend to for thick coiled or tightly curled natural hair.kristina.b

When I am going to use a mousse, I always have some expectation of a certain “feeling” in terms of the texture of my hair. The reviews that state that it is difficult to run your fingers through are true… it is… but it feels more like strong hold hair spray. In areas I put too much, it is stiffer but if I did it lightly and directly on my roots, it does not feel that way. I have fine hair for reference. Now the important part and the reason I purchased the product…volume. I have SO MUCH volume. Even when I flatten my hair and then try to “fluff” it up again, it’s so voluminous.
My advice would be to apply small amounts directly to the roots and run your fingers through your hair as you dry.Haleema Irfan

I'm really tired of mousse that are too strong or sticky. This mousse is GREAT and no sticky feel. It really does a great job giving my hair lift. I have layered, color treated shoulder length hair. Sometimes I style it straight, sometimes in a natural wave. This works well either way. And did I say, no sticky feel??!Mature and still wearing makeup!

I bought this mousse looking for a little more lift with my blowouts and unfortunately I ended up returning it. I added some volume and thickness to my hair for sure but I hated how it made my hair feel! So weighed down and almost like I couldnt get a brush through it! Unlike the other reviewers, I am extremely impressed with this product. Although it dispenses like a mousse, on the hair is has a consistency of a balm, so very little product is required. At application, it is slightly sticky on the hair. While air-drying, my waves behaved with no frizziness or flyaways, but my hair felt a little stiff. To my great surprise, a little scrunching removed any stiffness, leaving only perfectly tame and soft waves. My hair was soft and super shiny. I use a dime-size dollap on the ends of next-day hair and I am good to leave the house. To put things in perspective, this is the only product that my hair needs when air-drying – one product instead of four to five! My only nit? This mousse behaves far more like a gel. I cannot stress this enough. I was recommended this product by a friend who was recommended by a hairdresser. So far, I've tried it with partially towel dried hair, "plopped" hair, and very wet hair. This product works best on wet hair, period. Any sort of drying, even just plopping, can alter the results. I can imagine this would still work for some people, but ideally, you will want to scrunch this into wet hair. My best results so far paired with a leave in conditioner, a styling cream, and a gel (a very hydrating gel). I am excited to try with other combinations and without the other gel, too. There's so many possibilities, and aside from the learning curve, it's a great product that smells fantastic and has GREAT hold. The key to success is proper hydration and pairing, which is what you could say about any product, really. I almost want to deduct a star for the learning curve but it's a great "mousse" and I owe it to exploring its full potential before dinging a star off.KP

Love this product. I have wave/curls, and this makes my waves hold, prevents them from falling flat and frizzy, and allows my curls to actually form. I typically have to wash my hair every 3 days, and most products I’ve tried tend to build up and make my hair greasy before day 3. This one doesn’t. It’s super light, and I can easily refresh my hair each day by getting all my hair wet and adding in a little more mousse. The other thing I love is that it doesn’t have an overpowering scent. Ive been using Cantu products for years now. I absolutely LOVE their coconut curling cream, so I decided to give the curling mousse a try. Upon first using the product, it has the same great smell and easy application process… however.. after my hair dried, this product left it with a very “greasy” textured look. I usually pat my hair dry with a towel, do some skincare, and then run wet hands through my hair to re-wet it before I put this stuff in. I find that helps it dry faster but keeps enough moisture for it to fully activate. Always make sure to shake this before you use it! I see lots of reviews where people say you can’t use the last 1/4 of the bottle, because if you don’t shake it, the mousse comes out super thick and creamy, meaning you’re using too much concentrated product and it’s not mixed with the propellant well enough. Read the directions for sure. When I break the cast, my hair is so defined and soft. No crunch or stickiness, however less is more with this. It took me a while to find the perfect amount which is a lot less than I figured.tenortwentysome

It is my all time favourite mousse I have ever used! I can't emphasize how much I love this product. Let me tell you why I choose Bumble and Bumble… First off, I was obsessed with always flat ironing my hair to the point that it was damaging my hair so much that I needed to stop and find a different styling routine. I came across this product and fell in love instantly. It was everything I wanted in a product, which was to define my curls without that sticky feel, like all the other mousses out there and to volumize my hair! It truly made me appreciate my hair. The product made a difference in my routine, I spend less time using heat on my hair. I shower, put a bit of mousse, let it air dry and voila! First of all, I haven't used mousse for my curls in forever! LOL But gave this my best shot. I have 2C/3A hair. My hair tends to get very frizzy as it's thick and coarse. It needs a good strong styler to give it the control it needs. But I don't like my hair crunchy or to be too waxy. SO when I used this layered with Bumble and Bumble leave in conditioner, primer and then the mousse, it left my hair very pretty frizzy, probably more so than with the creme. I was not feeling confident about my hair. BUT when I used this the same way as above and then put the gel-oil on top of that as sort of a sealer to any frizz I saw before I blowdried my hair, my hair was AWESOME. Soft, supple curls. NOT crunchy. Felt really confident. Big curls, little frizz. Really, really love this combination in my hair. Also have pretty good 2nd day hair after this combo too! I struggle to get good 2nd day hair anyway but this combination with leave-in, primer, mousse, and gel-oil gives me hope!PearlCurl

I received this product complimentary from Influenster for review. I was pleasantly surprised with this product. I have tried so many creams, gels, sprays and mousses for my fine curly hair and most of them just weighed it down or made my hair feel crunchy. This foam is really lightweight and definitely helped to boost my curls and hold them in place. I didn’t need a whole lot and it kept my curls in place, even after sleeping on them. The next morning, my curls still looked great. It dries a little stiff at first but I just scrunch the curls to break the cast and they turn out nice and soft. I love how it smells, too! It’s like a tropical fruity smell. And the best part is that it doesn’t contain any harsh chemicals or alcohol, which is even better for my already damaged hair. I received this product free for testing purposes. My views are completely my own, of course. I love the weightless feel and how easily the foam blends into my hair. I love the lightly floral/ fruity scent. I don't think that it is strong enough to hold my curls tight because of the length of my hair, which is to my upper back. I did note that when it dried it didn't flake and it was easy to brush out. I am not sure what it costs but I think for short hair this would be a fun addition. I can't recommend for longer hair.Paula1134

I love this. It has a nice lightweight formula that still gives a solid hold. I use this when I do my French braids and it keeps my hair frizz free for about a week. It also don’t make my scalp itch or feel sticky. I also use this when I style my curls. Also it doesn’t make my hair crunchy. I’ll definitely be buying this again.Lura A.

So far I really like this product! My curls lasted the whole night. I always have trouble with my curls lasting. At the end of the day most of my hair is back to it’s natural state, straight. The next morning my hair was still curly!fatima.b

I honestly…love any type of mousse that can help my hair have more volume. This is one of those. I had gotten this mousse on sale at my local Walgreens with a coupon. So when I did try it out for the first time…I couldn't believe how little of product I used on my hair…and it still turned out fabulous…and side note: I have long hair…and I actually use just a little mousse combined with the hairspray …man..I couldn't believe how the outcome of my hair was…it was awesome!! ❤❤ my wavy curls lasted all day!!! I really love this product and a lot less expensive than Aquage root lift. Shake really well, hold the can upside down and apply directly to parted hair at scalp only. I apply to five sections from forehead to crown. Then I mush it all around on my scalp and let sit while putting on my makeup. Then blow dry and wow lots of volumne!!! Love, love, love!!KellCali

I have thoroughly been enjoying Mielle's products since my first proper introduction to them about 3 months ago. I heard about Mielle while I was wearing locs. So I really didn't pay attention to this company because I wasn't apart of their customer demographic. Most of 2020, I was battling cancer and lost all of my hair. Yes, Im free of it now and actually have some hair on my head again. I was spoiled with 3 years of get up and go hair. I literally owned one bottle of shampoo, retightened my roots 2 to 3 times a year and my anthem was, "I woke up like this." So dealing with loose hair felt foreign to me. More so than it feeling foreign were the PTSD flash backs of me trying to style my loose natural hair. I admit it, in the past I wasn't as accepting of my natural curl pattern. I wanted big 3b curls while God blessed me with 4a/c curls. So the thought of going back to wet sets, twist outs and tons of heavy gel scared me. What impresses me the most with Mielle's products, including this Curl Defining Mousse w/ Hold, is that it is so easy to style my hair. You would think I could just slap anything into my short 3c/4a hair (chemo curls) and it look good. Noooo, this theory was quickly disproven especially when trying other brands. I picked up a sample packet of the Curl Defining Custard at the local Dollar General and I was hooked ever since. Although, The Curl Defining Custard is perfect as is with the shine, definition and hold, I still felt it wasn't soft enough as I wanted. When the bulk of Covid is over, I want hands running through my hair. 😉 LOL It was suggested by Mielle staff to try the Brazilian Curly Cocktail Curl Cream under it. Yes, my hair was still shiny and defined and now it was soft. That combo made my hair super curly also. Its just that my hair took forever to dry and it was a lot of effort to put through my hair. That leads me to this Curl Defining Mousse w/Hold. O-M-G, this is truly wash and go hair with this product. I just run in through sections and I'm done. It dries clear and without flakes. My hair doesn't even have to be soaking wet. It almost looks like I wet set my hair on perm rods. It has the shine of setting lotion and the soft feel too. But my hair has hold and bounce. I just stocked up on this product because I haven't seen it in stores yet and this current price is looking really good. With products like these I don't think I want to go back to wearing locs. In addition to how well the products work, can we talk about the packaging. There are pumps for most of Mielle's products and you can easily lock them closed. Amazing!Dany J.

This is the defining mousse of all mousses! The pomegranate & honey curl defining mousse is EXCELLENT! A must have for all natural ladies & girls! It’s light, smells great, and gives high definition to all your curls with a soft hold (No crusty crunch). There’s no need to wonder if this is the right product. I love this product🙌🏽🥰. The journey for finding the right natural hair products has been a challenge, but I can truly say this product does its job. It works, I did a Aztec with Apple cider vinegar clay mask. After washing it out I added the rice water drops with Mielle Babassu & Mint deep conditioner. I then followed it up with Rosemary Strengthening Shampoo, and added the White Peony Leave in Conditioner. I selection my hair in four twisted it up and slept in a satin cap. The next morning I reapplied water with mist water bottle, the pomegranate/honey defining mousse added two other gels that’s not in the Mielle collection to get my curl define look. I say all this to say even though I substitute other products in, over all the main products were Mielle. I just bought more products this time I will use all Mielle products and see what the outcome will look. -Thank you 🙏🏽MielleCK
