Best Mousse For Curly Hair Not Crunchy (2025 Update)

I’ve tried so many different gels, mousses, creams, oils, to enhance my poor little damaged waves and I always come back to this. My hair started getting wavier in my teens but I just didn’t take care of my hair very much so my little waves were not flourishing as they could’ve. This product definitely helped enhance them while nourishing them to lock in my conditioner. My hair is slowly graduating from very damaged 2a to relatively damaged 2b hair! I love this product. It locks in your conditioner and adds that moisture you need while sealing up your waves. I like to put a little conditioner on my hair while it’s still really wet from the shower, then comb through my hair with a brush (if I use my fingers like I’m supposed to then the top of my hair at the roots gets really wonky so I have to use a wider wet brush to get some of it normal) then I put this stuff in and I scrunch it up and put it in my little hair towel and I’m done! It works it’s magic, I take off the towel and go to bed!Alli

I absolutely love this mousse for my curly hair. It is part of my hair routine after I wash my hair. I am on my second bottle or can? Whichever you would like to call it. I wish I'd looked at the ingredients more closely before buying this mousse, though, because it contains propane, which honestly just freaks me out. I still tried it because I spent money on it, but I wasn't super impressed. The mousse is ***VERY*** thick, so I mixed very small amounts with water before scrunching it into my hair. After diffusing and scrunching out the crunch, my curls were actually very well-defined and had good volume, but even though I used VERY little – an amount that was maybe the size of a plum for my entire head of hair (falls between jawline and shoulder) – my roots felt extremely gummy and gross. I know it's the mousse because the only other product I used was the ultra-light leave-in I've been using for years. I can't imagine being able to use much less product, though, just because of how the mousse comes out of the can. So overall, it does define curls, it may leave a gummy residue (my hair may really be just too fine), and it contains scary ingredients. The scent is also pleasant, but very strong and appears to last (I did my hair hours ago and I still smell like coconut). I wouldn't buy this again, but I'll probably save this as a back-up product in case I run out of my holy grails – and stay far away from open flames, yikes.CB

I was quite looking forward to using this most from all my purchases. However, I was quite disappointed. It is more of a foam not mousse. The hold is not there and my hair is low porosity type 2b hair and i did not find it reducing frizz either. I pair this mousse with the Curl Enhancing Smoothie from the same product line and they work really well together! I section my hair and evenly distribute the Smoothie, then I use this Mousse to focus on my ends. Finally blowdry with a diffuser attachment. When I use both products together my curls clump together nicely and my ends stay frizz-free. I can also use the Mousse on its own for a more natural/less defined curl. Wow! Amazing ingredients and quality. I am so lucky to have found this amazing products. I use it after washing my hair on a damper hair, my hair feels very soft and settled down. I have wavy/curly hair, medium texture. Pre-pandemic, I was recommended Moroccanoil by my stylist. But, since the product I was using at the time was working well, I didn't bother trying Moroccanoil. However, recently, my usual product reformulated and changed drastically for the worse. It no longer worked. So, I decided to try a few products from Moroccanoil (oil treatment, curl defining cream, and curl control mousse). To my dismay, all the products I tried smell like alcohol and aftershave. While I do get a little more bounce and a little more curl than my previous brand, non of the products I tried is great with frizz control. I've tried letting my hair air dry and I've also used a diffuser on low and medium settings. I'm fine with paying for a product that works. But, I feel that I have been ripped off. I LOVE this product and this whole brand. I was sent a sample of the curl defining cream and the smell won me over instantly. It just makes your hair smell so good. My husband thought it was my shampoo or conditioner, but he told me my hair smelt so good the first time I used this product. I even went and bought the perfect defense heat protector spray after they sent me this sample. I use it after I curl my hair with my straightener and it just makes my hair smell amazing, reduces any frizz left, and makes my curls bouncy. I also let my daughter use it and she loved it as well. She has super curly ringlets and used it after a shower and her curls looked so good. They were bouncy and frizzless. This product works! The only thing is that there are other products on the market for curl defining that are very similar for way less and that’s why I took off a whole star. As of now, I’ve stuck with Cantu’s curl defining cream so I can compare it to that. Unlike Cantu’s, this cream is super lightweight! Doesn’t feel heavy or greasy but still gets the job done. My curls were super shiny and they were defined. I put mousse over it and it did a wonderful job of keeping my curls frizz free. The smell alone was amazing. I would only get this when I want to splurge. Although it did wonders, it’s still not something I’d spend $36 on. These products tend to run out quick if you have curly hair or long hair and it’s just not worth it. I was buying the bumble and bumble mousse for almost 40 bucks and replacing it every 3-4 weeks until I had to put an end to it!melissa.r

Yes it's expensive, BUT it's also the best curling mousse I've ever tried. The VOLUME and hold alone make it a must-have for me, but on top of that it's great to have it in your hair from the day before when you're refreshing your day-two curls. I have wavy hair after 1/2 a lifetime of straight hair. I never know how to deal with it. It isn't straight & if I wear it straight it looks like a wig. I have literally tried EVERYTHING for wavy and curly hair but I am always looking off the holy grail. I decided to go back to this again today and my hair, which my stylist added layers & took weight out for more texture, looks fantastic! & the waves turn into curls and actually last! I heard other reviews and videos rave about this mousse and had to try it. I have to say, they are right. I have fine texture, low porosity natural hair. My hair is short, but when stretched the back comes to my collar bone and the front comes to the end of my nose (to give you a reference). I get good definition using a gel, but this product really defined my hair, and I had more body. Body is a problem for those of us with fine hair. My curls lasted 4 days, especially in the top which is longer. My hair is shorter on the sides and since I sleep on my side the definition fades sooner. I still had a little definition on my sides day 4, but the top still had curls. The first time I used it I only used a moisturizing deep conditioner and the mousse. It did great defining my curls, but left my hair very dry. The next time I used a moisturizing deep conditioner, leave-in conditioner, a moisturizing gel, and a sealing oil with the mousse. Sounds like a lot, but this is the process I have to use every wash day to keep my hair moisturized for 3 days. I did not have any problems with dry hair at all this time. I have thick heavy waves/curls. The product worked well when I used it with a leave in conditioner. The day I was in a rush and didn't put a leave in my hair was course and felt dehydrated. It doesn't help to clump your curls on it's own, but was easy to style and mold my curls with my brush. Dried quickly and smelled good. I didn't get a chance to use it for a long period of time to see the overall quality. The bottle untwisted just enough while under my sink and spilled. Luckily I had it in a container. The bottle easily untwist. You should keep the product right side up and make sure it doesn't knock over. Unfortunately it's the bottle quality that keeps me from buying this again. I would suggest checking The Doux’s channel on YouTube to see how she uses the styler depending on the length of the hair. I have a short natural tapered cut and the mousse works best went I finger twirl the top and front. I love the slip and the shine. Even though the hold is soft – it survives my sweaty workouts. With 3b curls that are dry, coarse, long, tangly and graying…I've been struggling lately. I want so badly to keep my hair long and grow it longer than I've ever had the patience to. I purchased this Ouidad VitalCurl mousse today (last one on the shelf!), because I was desperately trying to just get my hair to look good. I got home with my new product and hit the shower right away. After washing/conditioning I put a bit of my previously purchased Ouidad VitalCurl Tress Effects Gel in my palm and added a a nice dollop of this mousse on top and mixed it together until no foam remained and I was left with a wonderfully slippery gel-consistency. I repeated the process once more to make sure I coated everything. I used an Olivia Garden brush to distribute the product and let it dry naturally. It didn't take as long to fully dry as when I use my gel with other hair creams and my hair had a cast that was so perfect it still looked wet when it was fully dry. I was so happy with the results that I feel like I can let this unruly mom keep on growing. At least my ponytail would look good and not a frizzy mess like it usually does. This is THE one product from Ouidad that I feel I can't do without. Granted, I haven't used it by itself but when a curly girl finds her perfect recipe, it's a challenge to stray from it for fear of ruining the outcome. As a side note, I have used the gel mentioned above by itself and I loved the curl formation, however, it's a very foamy gel once I start applying it and it makes a squooshing noise and turns white. I bought this to try after using the curl talk cream and gel religiously for a while which I LOVE. I have mostly type 2b/c hair with some 3A pieces and don't usually have a problem with definition/volume, but this pretty much gave me neither just made my hair frizzy and I really don't like the way it feels to the touch. It leaves a pretty strong cast that is difficult to get out even when scrunching with oil and if you live in a super humid place like me, then so much humidity will make your hair crunchy all over again. I ignored the reviews in hopes that maybe it would work for me to simplify my routine, but I wish I had just repurchased my tried and true instead. I honestly prefer just my hair air dried with only a light leave in (pretty loose waves-not like what I get with the cream/gel but doable) to what this gives me. I'm gunna try to power through and finish this but I have a feeling I won't. Listen to the reviews and just save yourself the time and money it's not worth the like 2% chance this will actually work for you. Very sticky mousse! Dispensing this foam and rubbing it between my hands felt like I had just opened a bottle of hair spray and poured it into my hands. I couldn't believe how sticky this stuff was! I used a very small amount, applied to my roots first and the combed the rest through my hair with my fingers. After scrunching my hair, washing my hands and blow drying on the lowest setting with a diffuser I was left with wet-looking, crunchy curls. Trying to reactivate the next day by misting my hair with a little water and letting air dry I was left with really dry, hard hair feeling like I had used lots of hair spray. Couldn't get my fingers through it, no way a comb or brush would make it. So happy to wash this stuff out of my hair. Throwing this in the trash and will look for something else. I have low porosity, medium density wavy/looser curly hair. The bottom part of my hair has tighter ringlets/curls while the hair closer to my crown is a bit looser and tends to be weighed down or fall. I use this after applying leave-in and curl cream on wet hair and scrunch in! If I’m using gel, I don’t usually use this since my hair doesn’t really need both! It smells really good (the entire line does!) and it doesn’t weigh my hair down! It’s really easy to emulsify, you don’t need a lot of product. It helps control my frizz and defines my curls much better and it’s so easy to refresh day 2-3 hair with this product too!maria.m

I just purchased this product and tried it today. I love the way it was so easy to style my hair. My hair is just below my ears and starting to have a mind of it's own since I began growing it out a bit. I can tame and style it where I want and keep my curls in the back with this product. My hair is soft and manageable, no frizz or stiffness. It's a keeper!Beth

If you haven’t used this mousse you need to. I’ve been using this for years on myself and clients. I literally use this on EVERYONE that sits in my chair. It does it all. Seems I'm always searching for a product that will define curls, provide hold, add body and combat frizz all without adding weight or making my hair crunchy or stiff. The only reason I bought this is because there was a 3 for 2 deal. I have only used one other mousse before so I thought hey, lets give this a try. I have to say, after trying two different mousses, I'm not sure I'm a fan of them. This one said it doesn't leave scrunch in your hair, and whilst I did use more than a golf ball size on wet hair (I have thick and very long hair), it did leave a crunchy and sticky cast. It was a little difficult to scrunch out this scrunch too. However, I will say that I was surprised by the results. After it airdried completely and slept on it, I still have hold and definition. I didn't have as much as I would with a gel, but I actually liked this change because it did give my hair a more natural look in my opinion. It also didn't fall flat, it lasted like this for about 6 days. However, by the end of this week, my hair has definitely been feeling dry. I used a leave in conditioner underneath this, had a trim prior to using this nee product and used a strengthening conditioner before styling, so I know for a fact that it is this product. My hair doesn't usually feel like that. It did dry out my hair! It also left me with product build up. My scalp is flaking with more dandruff than usual, even though I barely focused the mouuse onto the roots to avoid this very issue. Maybe mouuse just isn't for me, but because of how it made my hair feel by the end of the week and for the other points mentioned, this definitely wont be a part of my weekly hair routine. Maybe this is best for occasional uses. I tend to find that mouuse is suppose to be used on more damp, towel dried hair as opposed to gels, which should be applied to more wet hair when you scrunch it into your hair. I received this product complimentary from Influenster for review. I was pleasantly surprised with this product. I have tried so many creams, gels, sprays and mousses for my fine curly hair and most of them just weighed it down or made my hair feel crunchy. This foam is really lightweight and definitely helped to boost my curls and hold them in place. I didn’t need a whole lot and it kept my curls in place, even after sleeping on them. The next morning, my curls still looked great. It dries a little stiff at first but I just scrunch the curls to break the cast and they turn out nice and soft. I love how it smells, too! It’s like a tropical fruity smell. And the best part is that it doesn’t contain any harsh chemicals or alcohol, which is even better for my already damaged hair. I received this product free for testing purposes. My views are completely my own, of course. I love the weightless feel and how easily the foam blends into my hair. I love the lightly floral/ fruity scent. I don't think that it is strong enough to hold my curls tight because of the length of my hair, which is to my upper back. I did note that when it dried it didn't flake and it was easy to brush out. I am not sure what it costs but I think for short hair this would be a fun addition. I can't recommend for longer hair.Paula1134

I love this. It has a nice lightweight formula that still gives a solid hold. I use this when I do my French braids and it keeps my hair frizz free for about a week. It also don’t make my scalp itch or feel sticky. I also use this when I style my curls. Also it doesn’t make my hair crunchy. I’ll definitely be buying this again.Lura A.

Pros: #1 it's very affordable and it will last you a long time. #2 It will give your curls amazing definition. #3 It's a medium hold, it will leave a cast but once the cast is broken you are left with super defined, flexible hold and soft curl. Cons: #1 It's a Canadian products and its hard to come by. Mostly sold on the ground for about $5.99 at Marshall's and T.J Max. It's also found online for a higher price. #2 For those who are protein sensitive -It contains protein. If your curls like or can handle protein I would still recommend you use a moisturizing leave in or cream under this gel. Use an oil or a moisturizing leave in to SOTC. As the gel tends to leave you with a dry felling after day 2.My honest opinion: I am in love with this gel so much so I ordered 2 more jars online @houseofbeautyworld ($7.99). If you are looking for a CGF gel to provide definition, soft long lasting curls, amazing volume and you want a budget friendly gel, this is it. My curls are Fine 3B Medium porosity. My hair looks and feels thicker and each curl is very defined and so soft. My wash and go's can last me up to 6 days. I've also used the mousse to use as a refresher. Also a great product.mrs..l

What a fun brand – this packaging is so retro! Even though it is not my go to product, I do enjoy it. I found mine in Marshalls, but other than that you can mainly buy it from Amazon making it harder to find. It does enhance your curly hair create nice texture without weighing your hair down. Easy to distribute and a little goes a long way. So if you can find it in store buy it, but I normally do drugstore having to order online is not always easy to do. I felt no tacky residue and curls dried good. Overall I had a positive experience just disappointed with availability. 💖lindsey.j

THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE 'TRESLÚCE BEAUTY – INTENSO LINER DUO', not yet in the Influenster database. To be honest, I wasn't really excited for these. BUT, that all changed as soon as I got them into my hands, I'm thoroughly impressed! These pencil liners are the 'sharpenable' format, which I do enjoy. They are both (my favorite) gel formula – allowing them to be intensely pigmented, yet still maintain a very soft smooth application. These liners are multipurpose – great for working into an eyeshadow look, or adding a dash of color onto the waterline. Both of the colors actually look really good blended together, but they also look stunning on their own. I found that this particular formula was very difficult to remove, which is great for lasting power!melissa.j

Well holy crap! This is a funky product! You pump some into your hands and scrunch for some easy, sexy volume and texture. The scent is great too. I bought this for $9 USD at Boxycharm PopUp and it is so worth it. My second day hair looks like q magnificent 70s rockstar. I find it doesn't weigh hair down or make it look greasy. I so far have only applied in dry hair. I have thick but fine shoulder length, colour treated hair.francesca.a

I haven’t really tried this yet. I have fine straight hair and this is geared more to curly hair, so I’m hoping it will work for me. I wanted to try something new, and I have tried all the products I can that are for fine straight hair. Which I have liked all of them, some more than others. I hope they make more styling products geared towards my hair type. I love all the R & Co hair videos, I am always wishing my hair could look like the models hair.Tatia H.

I love this product. After I put my other products on I spray this on my wet hair & let air dry. My curls are light weight & carefree with an amazing smell. The only down side isn't the cost. But with the curly struggle this is a drop in the budget. So with every dollarNikki

I was excited to try this out on my hair for the first time. Usually when I use mousse, I shoot for that "scrunchy wet look" finish. Well I didn't get that with this product. I'm very sad about it because it's just gonna sit there on my dresser until I find a better one. 💔L

I use mousse for scrunching my curls and this works perfect for it is worth the splurge! Stock up when there’s a sale! It smells good!! This product had good hold but I am dissatisfied with how quickly it went flat. I used as directed but the bottle has at least 90% of contents left and no longer expands into a foam when dispensed. It is a runny mess to use and I suspect I use too much when it doesn’t expand. Hair ends up heavy and frozen as if it is still wet. I will not purchase this product again.Jenny

Everything about the packaging is great except I do find it hard to only get small bit into your hand. This could be a good and bad thing depending on how you use the product but when I use it I do have to waste some product because so much comes out. The results left my hair very voluminous. I had a huge difference in my hair, which was great. It lasted a while which was even better. The only downfall is it did leave my hair feeling greasy, if I would run my hands through my hair, my hands would feel oily with the residual product on them. My hair did also begin to look oily towards the end of the day (this was freshly cleaned hair and my hair normally doesnt get oily until I sleep on it for a night). But I did overall love the lift result and someone elses hair may absorb it way differently than mine and may not actually leave any residual product. Definitely worth the risk because of the result so I do recommend to try.Mad968

I usually like this product as it gets my hair nicely loose and volumed for blowdrying, and so I ordered 2 bottles online. One of them is fine but the other doesn’t foam up when pumped – it comes out as liquid mush. Returning is too much of a hassle – who has time for that for a $13 product. And I don’t think I can take it into a store and swap it , they will tell me to use the online return process. So am stuck with an unusable bottle of this product.Greg1010

I've been using this mousse for years at least 10-15 years and when I couldn't find it in the store I freaked because it's the best product I've put in my hair especially when I have course, thick, wavy hair. I have thoroughly been enjoying Mielle's products since my first proper introduction to them about 3 months ago. I heard about Mielle while I was wearing locs. So I really didn't pay attention to this company because I wasn't apart of their customer demographic. Most of 2020, I was battling cancer and lost all of my hair. Yes, Im free of it now and actually have some hair on my head again. I was spoiled with 3 years of get up and go hair. I literally owned one bottle of shampoo, retightened my roots 2 to 3 times a year and my anthem was, "I woke up like this." So dealing with loose hair felt foreign to me. More so than it feeling foreign were the PTSD flash backs of me trying to style my loose natural hair. I admit it, in the past I wasn't as accepting of my natural curl pattern. I wanted big 3b curls while God blessed me with 4a/c curls. So the thought of going back to wet sets, twist outs and tons of heavy gel scared me. What impresses me the most with Mielle's products, including this Curl Defining Mousse w/ Hold, is that it is so easy to style my hair. You would think I could just slap anything into my short 3c/4a hair (chemo curls) and it look good. Noooo, this theory was quickly disproven especially when trying other brands. I picked up a sample packet of the Curl Defining Custard at the local Dollar General and I was hooked ever since. Although, The Curl Defining Custard is perfect as is with the shine, definition and hold, I still felt it wasn't soft enough as I wanted. When the bulk of Covid is over, I want hands running through my hair. 😉 LOL It was suggested by Mielle staff to try the Brazilian Curly Cocktail Curl Cream under it. Yes, my hair was still shiny and defined and now it was soft. That combo made my hair super curly also. Its just that my hair took forever to dry and it was a lot of effort to put through my hair. That leads me to this Curl Defining Mousse w/Hold. O-M-G, this is truly wash and go hair with this product. I just run in through sections and I'm done. It dries clear and without flakes. My hair doesn't even have to be soaking wet. It almost looks like I wet set my hair on perm rods. It has the shine of setting lotion and the soft feel too. But my hair has hold and bounce. I just stocked up on this product because I haven't seen it in stores yet and this current price is looking really good. With products like these I don't think I want to go back to wearing locs. In addition to how well the products work, can we talk about the packaging. There are pumps for most of Mielle's products and you can easily lock them closed. Amazing!Dany J.

This is the defining mousse of all mousses! The pomegranate & honey curl defining mousse is EXCELLENT! A must have for all natural ladies & girls! It’s light, smells great, and gives high definition to all your curls with a soft hold (No crusty crunch). There’s no need to wonder if this is the right product. I love this product🙌🏽🥰. The journey for finding the right natural hair products has been a challenge, but I can truly say this product does its job. It works, I did a Aztec with Apple cider vinegar clay mask. After washing it out I added the rice water drops with Mielle Babassu & Mint deep conditioner. I then followed it up with Rosemary Strengthening Shampoo, and added the White Peony Leave in Conditioner. I selection my hair in four twisted it up and slept in a satin cap. The next morning I reapplied water with mist water bottle, the pomegranate/honey defining mousse added two other gels that’s not in the Mielle collection to get my curl define look. I say all this to say even though I substitute other products in, over all the main products were Mielle. I just bought more products this time I will use all Mielle products and see what the outcome will look. -Thank you 🙏🏽MielleCK
