Best Recumbent Bike For Seniors With Arthritis (2024 Update)

This review will be broken down into two parts: Installation/Delivery & use of the product. Installation/Delivery: Firstly, I am so happy to currently be a member of the Total Tech Membership. As a result, I was able to get this bike for $500. That $500 included not only the bike, but also the delivery AND installation. I ordered the bike about a week ago and set up delivery/install for Friday 1.21.22. The two guys that came to complete the bike delivery and set up were AWESOME! I think we were their last delivery on Friday as they called and said they were driving back from Sheboygan then to Green Bay to pick up bike, then up to Door County. Even though I could tell they had a LONG day these two guys were EXCEPTIONAL. They came in brought the bike downstairs and happily went to work on putting it together. They got the whole thing together and rocking and rolling in about 40 minutes (totally worth me not doing it b/c I'm sure it would've taken me much longer). They gave me a tutorial on use and took everything away. Both of these guys deserve a TEN out of TEN for their efforts & hard work (even on a late Friday night). Thanks MUCH to them Use of Product: my wife did a ride yesterday on the bike and I used it this morning before work. The product is SUPER easy to use and it is VERY VERY QUIET (you can hardly hear it running). I love that they have user profiles that keep track of your workouts and overall distances that you bike (it allows 4 profiles). This bike has a great display for your workouts and it has plenty of choices for programs. It also has a fan and though I haven't used it yet it has a USB port and speakers for listening to what you'd like (I am an ear buds kind of guy). When using the bike it is VERY comfortable (I'm 5'10') and the seat moves with ease. This was the perfect last piece of exercise equipment we needed for our basement gym and it provides a good workout without major stress on the body. I would HIGHLY recommend this product to anyone who is on the fence about buying it. The bike (as you can see in the pictures) does not take up that much room compared to other pieces of cardio equipment as well which is a bonus.Brewerfan3

Schwinn has pulled a complete bait and switch on these units that to me borders on criminal. There USED to be (and is advertised) a free app that you could download to interact with these units as well as keep track of your workouts. However, that has gone the way of the dodo bird – extinct! The old app is still referenced in the owners/installation menu. The app has been removed from all app stores – no matter the device. What Schwinn has done is convert to a Peleton type structure where the app is now a subscription based service. Total money grab. If the app worked like Peleton, I could almost get behind it – not even close. There are only 3 or 4 free "rides" you can do with the new app but none are interactive to where the resistance varies based on the terrain. The app does make the video come to a halt if you stop pedaling – that's it. No matter what speed you pedal, the video just trundles along at the same speed. I did a quick review of the paid "rides" and they all said "video only" so even the paid app does NOT provide any interactive workout other than the view going by at a constant speed – unless you stop. No resistance changes, no speed changes, just a slow ride through the scenery. Also, the Bluetooth….would you expect that to link to your device and let you play music? NOPE!!! The only thing the Bluetooth will link to is the new app. I was told by Schwinn support that it would link to other apps but I tried 3 of what they recommended and no Bluetooth link unless on their app. Worthless. So, there is also a little fan on the console that has a vent similar to an A/C vent in a car. Great idea…..poor execution. The fan is mounted inside the plastic enclosure in such a way that when the air exits the front of the vent, it's blowing at a 45 degree angle and it shoots off to the left, doing a nice job of cooling your left forearm but not a whisp of air on your face. The seating position on this is also uncomfortable. The seat moves up and down at a steep angle – so much so that the instructions say to get out of the seat before adjusting. That is ridiculous. If they were being honest, they would say, "Our design is poor and you can't actually adjust the seat while seated". If you do decide to adjust the seat while actually seated (so you can tell where you need to set it – duh), you better have at least one foot FIRMLY on the pedal, ready to support most of your body weight. Otherwise, the seat will SLAM to the bottom and jam your back – yes, I did it! This is not like any recumbent bike Ive ever been on – the ergonomics just are NOT good. The angle is just not right. Excellent exercise bike at an excellent price. Free delivery was included and much appreciated that they moved the heavy box into the back room for me. Setup took about 90 minutes with assistance from a step-by-step YouTube video that made identifying parts and order a breeze (SEARCH: "Complete! Assemble Schwinn 270 Recumbent Exercise Bike") The bike is very comfortable and includes a console with lots of information and ability to setup custom programs. It's really not too bulky either and fits well along the wall of our room, so its pretty much out of the way. It has wheels in the front and a handle in the back to enable you to easily lift and move the bike. There is also a media shelf underneath the main display to hold your phone or tablet, and also a USB port to keep your device charged during your work out. The only negative thing you might have is that the Bluetooth capability is limited to using their app for downloading information about your session. You can't stream any music to its internal speakers at all. You will need to use the supplied 3.5mm input port and cable to attach to an MP3 player or phone that has a similar jack to play any music from the speakers. But you can just use your own phone or tablet along with wireless earbuds or headphones for better sound. The bike itself is very quiet when pedaling, which is nice. It has 25 levels of resistance which is plenty, and includes a heart rate monitor via the handles mounted on either side of the seat. A little nice addition is the cup holder/storage for your water bottle and/or remote control. Compare all this to the very similar (and more expensive) Nautilus R618 Recumbent bike that has almost identical features and made by the same company.BobG

Assembly is a pain, manual could be designed and detailed better. Seat and backboard need is not spaced accurately and I have to basically lay on the bike so my butt is not hanging from the seat in the back.Varun

It is hard to rate this purchase because I am both pleased and disappointed. I was excited when I saw the thak you card from the company president upon opening the box. What a nice extra touch! But sad when I found they couldn't even keep up the $10 per year domain name to let you know their app is defunct. And of course there is the realization that this company has a corner on this level of fitness equipment (owning Nautilus, Schwinn, Bowflex, and more) so why should they put forth the effort? Despite the extreme cost difference, I would have looked longer at Peloton if I'd known. But, moving past my dismay to what matters most, as a 63 year old female not in the best shape, I put the bike together myself quite effortlessly. That is not to say that it is not quite heavy at near 100 pounds, but the instructions were clear for the most part. One thing I would add is that, when installing the seat bottom, screw the two roads in at the front first, or it will be difficult (if not impossible) to line the screw holes up. In all cases, the best idea when installing multiple screws in a section is to apply all the screws loosely, then tighten all after everything is lined up for that section. As a final fuss, I wish the power cord was less flimsy/more substantial. Functionally, the bike is quiet, smooth and comfortable. The fan has little power, and this is a big deal because wouldn't it be wonderful to feel the wind in your hair as you ride, almost real IF THERE WERE AN APP to elicit the illusion. Rant over, I expect to appreciate the bike this year, and next year if I've done well with goals I may upgrade for more excitement.Deborah

Believe the bike is ok, but never really tried to use it due to shipping damage. The packaging is poor and the Styrofoam breaks down during shipping. I returned the first bike due to damage and ordered a second. Same issue with shipping. Damaged box on front door. Nautilus really needs to improve the packaging. I use it in the winter to compliment my good weather riding on my outdoor recumbent. It is very smooth riding and has more than enough resistant levels. The one problem I have with it is the difficulty moving it from room to room (living room TV watching to storage in spare bedroom). I have a bad back and can't lift it onto it's casters, so I improved it by adding four casters (on the ends of the stabilizers). They are 2 in. rubber casters (two fixed and two locking-swivel). The bike is still very stable, even on hardwood floors. Even for people with good backs, it is much easier and safer to move around. It takes more room to store, but it's not a deal breaker for me.none

I love the bike! But the exercise computer does not work well. I changed the batteries, but that didn’t change the problem. I’ve read the user manual telling of how to reset, have tried all that, and it didn’t change anything. The numbers flash constantly without reason. Is there any suggestions on how to fix this? I like this machine . I just started using it because had to wait for my daughter to assemble it. I am 80 and could not see well enough to do it myself. I got it because my back doctor advised that I start using something like it, for exercise. When i went through PT, prior to a surgical procedure on my back, I was advised by the manager of my therapy to get one for exercise, in lieu of walking on the streets. It took over five frustrating hours for two people to put this bike together. The written instructions were extremely confusing. Without the help from YouTube we would still be struggling to finish the job. One of the brackets under the seat was severely bent and no amount of torc would straighten it out. Consequently one of the screws does will not fit in order to further secure the bike seat. I do not feel that I should be inconvenienced further by having someone help me once again to remove the seat, take a photo and provide further information for my complaint to be resolved. All I asked for was to be issued a $50 credit to my Visa card to compensate for the damaged part. On the plus side the bike seat is very comfortable.Ann

The recumbent bike is fantastic!. Assembly instructions were easy to follow. The bike came together without any problems. The bike has a terrific look and feel. Entering personal info for my wife and me (age, gender, weight and height) was easy. Following the embedded workout programs was also very uncomplicated. The seat is large and the foam padding is very comfortable even for hour-long workouts. I like the heart monitor built into to the sidebar grips makes tracking aerobic aspect of the workout simple. At 71 y/o and with arthritis in my knees bilaterally, I had to give up my 3-mile walks. This recumbent bike is very easy on my knees (not to mention my lower lumbar back). I like and use the builtin iPad/tablet stand for reading and watching videos while pumping away. Also, I like the sleek, narrow design – fits in against the wall minimizing its footprint in the room. I especially chose a recumbent bike because of the low impact to the knees versus an upright bike. I drive a lot and the recumbent bike has helped alleviate the lower back and hip pains. I was concerned about the quality and durability especially w/2 sons that workout all the time. It turned out to be a very heavy duty gym quality bike and reasonably priced. I really wanted to ride along with my 6yr old, but back pain left me unable to bear it for long. These hybrid bikes allow me to sit up straight, and I can ride for a few hours instead of a few minutes. After buying one for myself, I ordered another one for my girlfriend. I was inclined to leave a review because many of the low reviews complained about the same things: 1. To reviewers who said their knees hit the handlebars, you need to adjust the seat back! This is a recumbent bike, not a stationary bike. I’m 6’1, have longer legs, and had no issue with my knees hitting the handlebars after I adjusted the seat. Seat adjustment was very easy. 2. Some complained about the batteries being difficult to install. They are definitely a snugger fit but I was able to pop them in without any issue. 3. The instructions were extremely straightforward and the bike was easy to assemble. Took me about two hours from unboxing to finishing the assembly, and that was because in haste I read a couple of the steps incorrectly and had to go back. Overall very happy with this purchase.Stephen

DO NOT BUY!!! Ok, I had this bike for ten months using it to rehab from a hip surgery. at the onset the ride was nice. I am only 180lbs so well below the weight class recommended. After 10 months the bearing broke inside and it slipped and made noise. I had purchased the extended warranty BUT they gave me the runaround and it took 5 months to get it fixed. The repairman said these bikes aren't built to last. SO DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THEIR EXTENDED WARRANTYAnthony

I really like this bike and recommend purchasing. I did a lot of research and given the current environment and went ahead with this bike. It is very comfortable. (I am 58.) I was looking for a bike with a comfortable seat and I am glad I decided on this one. The seat is very comfortable with good support for the back. It is compact enough and fits nicely in the corner I set aside in my home office. I found a nice mat to fit under that is the exact dimensions of the bike. I don't have a fancy tv screen, but this bike has a nice space for my Ipad or iphone so I can watch tv, check emails, listen to music and any other app I decide to engage. I also have found a couple of great virtual bike rides on YouTube like Mt. Zion in Utah. Great buy!! Some assembly is required. I did read in the reviews about the news bumping against the handlebars. This happen a couple of times, but it is not a big problem at all. It has several workouts built in as well as various resistance levels for a more challenging workout. I can work up a good sweat in 30 minutes on my bike even at the lower resistance levels. I am very glad I made this purchase and decided on the recumbent model.KK

My wife loves this machine. So far it hasn’t had any issues. It wasn’t very difficult to put together either. The assembly instructions were a little tough to walk through, but I managed. the only issue is that the seat bracket that you slide back and forth is a little wobbly due to too much clearance on the rail, but it isn’t a deal breaker. the metal coating seems very tough and durable. it is also nice that we don’t have to plug it in to work. The machine is also very quiet as well. The seat is comfortable too.daniel

The Marcy NS-1201R Magnetic Resistance Recumbent Bike is simple to put together and takes a small amount of time. The Booklet that is included has very good instructions and pictures to assist in assembly. My 12 year old Granddaughter and i put it together with only one simple problem. After it was assembled i read the manual on how it operates and climbed on board to give it a spin. The booklet says the LCD screen wakes up when you begin to cycle but i noticed it did not on mine. I tried pushing the buttons on the screen and the screen lite up but showed stop in top corner even though i was pedaling. I took the screen off and checked the electrical connection and that was fine. Then i checked the connection where the front post connects to the main body and found one of the connections had been bent down. After straightening the connector it worked fine. This exerciser uses magnetic resistance which is adjusted by the user with a knob on the front post to increase or decrease the difficulty of the pedaling. It goes from 1 with is easy to 8 which is hardest. The LCD screen shows how you are doing by scanning your speed, distance, time and calories burned. It keeps a running record of your workout or you can clear the record by holding down the reset button. The seat is very comfortable and adjustable and can get you closer to the pedals or further away as needed. You can hang onto the handle bars next to the screen or the ones located at seat level. I wish the seat back adjusted forward or backward independent to the seat but it does not. The bike is well built and i saw no defects in welds and bolts went into place easily. The bike is quiet and smooth to operate and i feel i will use a lot more than i would go to a gym due to the convenience of having equipment at home.jsjsjsjs

It took longer than estimated to arrive by a little over a week from original date; by w/ the virus shutdown, it's understandable. My wife and I have both used it several times and are both pleased w/ it. Quite sturdy for an inexpensive piece of home equipment. Set up wasn't bad either. Despite some concerns over being comfortable for people of wide ranges in height we have found no real issue. I'm 6'2" and my wife is 5'1" and it accommodates us both well. Excellent exercise bike at an excellent price. Free delivery was included and much appreciated that they moved the heavy box into the back room for me. Setup took about 90 minutes with assistance from a step-by-step YouTube video that made identifying parts and order a breeze (SEARCH: "Complete! Assemble Schwinn 270 Recumbent Exercise Bike") The bike is very comfortable and includes a console with lots of information and ability to setup custom programs. It's really not too bulky either and fits well along the wall of our room, so its pretty much out of the way. It has wheels in the front and a handle in the back to enable you to easily lift and move the bike. There is also a media shelf underneath the main display to hold your phone or tablet, and also a USB port to keep your device charged during your work out. The only negative thing you might have is that the Bluetooth capability is limited to using their app for downloading information about your session. You can't stream any music to its internal speakers at all. You will need to use the supplied 3.5mm input port and cable to attach to an MP3 player or phone that has a similar jack to play any music from the speakers. But you can just use your own phone or tablet along with wireless earbuds or headphones for better sound. The bike itself is very quiet when pedaling, which is nice. It has 25 levels of resistance which is plenty, and includes a heart rate monitor via the handles mounted on either side of the seat. A little nice addition is the cup holder/storage for your water bottle and/or remote control. Compare all this to the very similar (and more expensive) Nautilus R618 Recumbent bike that has almost identical features and made by the same company.BobG

It does not cost much, but works perfectly. what it lacks to it competitors that cost 2x-10x as much is mostly bells, whistles and gimmicks. I took about an hour to put together (it came with a couple of throw away tools) Runs smoothly and quietly, There is a LED display that shows distance, speed, calories. The tensioner is a twist knob, the amount tension is from 0 to 8 and 8 is still quite low in resistance. my only real knock on this bike.Merlin

I've waited a long time to find a stationary exercise bike at a price I was willing to pay. This model perfectly fits the bill at a spectacular price. Not too difficult to assemble, though it does take some patience! I've been using it daily and it is both comfortable and has a lot of the "bells and whistles" much more expensive models have. In this day and age just the fact that this bike came across the country in a few days was impressive. Every subsequent step has been equally so. Unboxing was quite simple for such a multi-faceted item, and the video instructions and toolkit were GREAT. (Tip – use the Youtube video, not the befuddling paper instructions) I felt step number 4 (pedals) could benefit from a better CU in the video or the printed guide, but other than that it was really simple and MUCH better than many IKEA items I've had to assemble/destroy in frustration. I received mine and assembled it right out of the box. The first think I noticed was the quality. Top the the line equipment !! I took my time to assemble with no problems. The next day I exercised on it for a solid 45 minutes on #6 setting. Making a few seat adjustments, etc. I put the puter in scan mode so I could see everything throughout the workout. Checked the pedals and the arm attachments to ensure snug and tight after my initial assembly and 45 minute workout. Snugged a few things up and this machine is ready for some long workouts of up to an hour and beyond. _x000D_ I will say this from over 35 years experience in exercise having had many exercise machines running marathons and Ironman triathlon training that this is an awesome piece of exercise equipment. Would be 5 stars if I thought that the display readings were accurate. Rapid and easy assembly. All parts fit well, some scary reviews not withstanding. Illustrations could definitely be larger, particularly the pedal installation. Product works well and quietly. Step-in/step-out mounting/dismounting is a convenient feature. My wife and I both use it and the seat adjusts quickly and easily. Seat is a good size and comfortable but we would like it a little softer. An illuminated display would be a helpful improvement. Also, I have low confdence in the display readouts, other than the elapsed time. So far we are well satisfied. As for durability, only time will tell.
(UPDATE) Bike developed a slight "clicking" noise at approx 400 miles. Found that left pedal had loosened slighly (my fault). Tightened pedal (securely this time). No more problem! Check those pedals occasionally!Chuck LeMond

I just got the Marcy Magnetic Recumbent Bike and it is absolutely amazing! It has endless cool features. It comes with eight different levels of resistance. The seat has adjustments for long and short legs. Not only does the screen track your distance it also tracks speed, time, calories burned, and odometer. The seat comes with a very comfortable cushion seat, and the bars are made of foam so it will not hurt your hands to hold on to while you are cycling. The foot pedals have plastic bars that help you hold your foot in place while using the bike. It has a maximum weight capacity of 300 pounds. The assembly time is about two hours but it took me less than that. The instructions are very thorough and simple to understand as you are putting the bike together. Overall I would highly recommend this product to someone that is motivated and dedicated to losing weight or bettering their health overall.Bri

This is a standard seated bike that is good for occasional use. The bike came unassembled in 11 pieces and was very easy to unpack. The instructions are okay if you are good at putting things together, but the instructions are not very descriptive for beginners. Once the bike is assembled, the rear “feet” do allow for adjustments so that the bike does not wobble during use. In addition, there is a third knob for adjustment in the middle of the bike to ensure that the bike is stable. Negatives: – The bike does not come with batteries for the center console, so you will need to purchase 2 AAA batteries separately – The ledge on the bike display is too shallow and cannot be used to prop up your phone or tablet safely – At higher gear levels, the resistance does not feel smooth when peddling – When you stop peddling, you can hear the gear slide inside – You can only peddle forward, as there is no resistance available going backward – Bike seems to be made for taller people. At 5’3”, the shortest settings just barely allows me to ride comfortably. I would not recommend this for anyone shorter than 5’2” unless you have longer legs – Bike display is dark and does not have a backlight – Screen is a little bit far to reach if you are sitting back against the back rest – Bike has wheels in the front but is not easily roll-able or movable Positives: – Bike is very smooth on the low resistance settings – The seat and the backrest are very comfortable to sit in – Bike has arm rests/bars to hold onto while biking – The bike is extremely quiet – Foot pedals have adjustable straps Overall, this bike would be great for someone taller who is looking to bike casually or who is just getting back into fitness. This bike is perfect for me. I bought it for cardio and knee-strengthening exercise since the Y pool is not offering aquatic classes during the pandemic. I use it 30 minutes a day, five days a week, and feel stronger. I'm 79 years old, and average weight and height, and while it's perfect for me, I'm not sure that it would serve the needs of someone younger and heavier who wanted a more vigorous workout, as it is not as stable as that might require. I also highly recommend the Handy assembly provided by Walmart. Although it seemed a bit expensive, the technicians were very professional and did a great job.Virginia

I am loving this bike! Just turned 60, and I need a way to exercise in the long winter. This is so comfortable, and so quiet! It holds my iPad so I can watch workout videos, or anything else while riding. If I use ear buds it doesn't bother my husband at all. Almost silent. I'm over 200 and this feels so sturdy. Easily adjustable. Only thing I would have liked is a water bottle holder. Is that a big ask?Lisa E.

Received my bike 3 days ago, took a while to fit together, but once done it is a very sturdy bike, and I love the fact it puts no pressure on my lower back, unlike a standard exercise bike. Brilliant features, and constantly shows my heart rate, and how many calories I am burning. Taking it very slow as I have had issues with arthritis, but know this will help enormously. Only downside was there were no instructions on how to build it, there are many parts, so I had to download the manual (27 pages) – not good if you don't have a computer or printer.Judy1960

The bike is just perfect for me. I am a 80 year old lady and the workout room is closed so this was my best solution since I live in Texas and it's to hot to go for a walk. I had no problem putting this bike together. Took me a while but I did it. The explanation was great, all the parts were there and delivery was on time. I recommend this to anyone. I wanted a stationary bike a couple of weeks ago. I looked around and recalled all the exercise bicycles I'd seen in people's homes not being used, and thought about getting one that would be comfortable to ride and not become tedious to use. After looking at Marcy's reputation for quality gym equipment, I chose the Marcy Pro MRSREB, and it arrived at our home within days of my ordering it. The instructions took a few minutes to figure out, but everything was complete in the box and it took roughly an hour to assemble. I took my time, set it up, and I have used it every day since then. What you see is what you get: an economically priced, simple, efficient piece of exercise equipment that can easily be used while catching up on TV shows, movies or while listening to music. The only reason I give it only 3 stars is that they fail to tell you that the tension dial should be released before trying to attach the tension cable. I had to find that out the hard way. Other than that no complaints. It came securely packaged with the utmost care and seems to be a very good/sturdy piece of equipment. I believe I will get good use out of it.Lisa
