Choosing the best electric on-demand water heater for your home can seem like a daunting task. With so many options on the market, how do you know which one is right for you? This introductory guide will walk you through the key factors to consider and questions to ask yourself before making this important purchase.
First, think about your household’s hot water usage needs. How many showers, baths, sinks and laundry loads will need to be supported? Consider peak usage times and whether you’ll need a unit that can supply consistent hot water to multiple taps at once. The capacity and flow rate of the heater will impact its ability to meet your demand.
Next, consider the available space and setup in your home. Tankless electric heaters are wall-mounted, so ensure you have a suitable location. Also, factor in any necessary venting requirements. You’ll want an easily accessible unit, but avoid placing it somewhere with excess humidity or potential freezing.
Where will the unit be installed – indoors or outdoors? What kind of electrical setup does your home have? The voltage, amperage, circuit breaker size and wiring should all match the specifications of the heater you choose. Don’t forget about electrical permits and professional installation too.
Ask yourself about efficiency and operational costs as well. On-demand heaters only operate when hot water is needed, but the electrical costs can still add up. Look for Energy Star certified options with high energy factors. Also consider any noise levels, which are typically higher for electric units.
Take some time to research brands, warranty options and customer reviews too. This will give you a sense of real-world reliability and performance. Do common installation or maintenance issues come up? How helpful and responsive is customer service if you need assistance?
Choosing the optimal electric tankless water heater takes careful consideration. Keep these questions and factors in mind as you evaluate the best model for your home’s needs and budget. Taking the time upfront will ensure you make a wise investment.

Reviews:
I was hoping for so much from this product. Yesterday I took such a hot shower during lunch and then that evening when I gave my daughter a bath, it only came out lukewarm. My shower today was borderline cold. Tomorrow it may be hot again. I live in Northern VA and would not recommend this product. It ruins the experience of our new bathroom remodel. There's nothing worse than remodeling your bathroom to your dream bathroom and hearing your wife say, well that bath wasn't relaxing since she couldn't get hot water.ChristianMC
We purchased this unit about 1 month ago, replacing a Natural Gas water heater with 40g tank. The savings in space, and the removal of the fossil fuel device were our key drivers for this purchase. Our Electric bill has increased significantly, by about 50%, but because we never run out of hot water, showers tend to be longer. And now we can actually fill our tub with hot water without boiling extra water on the stove, so this also has increased our usage. There is an issue with temperature stability, when a toilet is flushed or other demand for water is turned on, the temperature swing is very noticeable. I have added a shower temp gauge, and have seen the temp drop from 42c to 39c when a toilet is flushed, it takes about 10-15 seconds to recover, and likewise, when the water demand drops, the temp goes up from 42c to 44.5c for several seconds. This shower valve has a pressure regulated flow control, so changes in the water will take some time to correct. Pros: Save on Space, endless hot water, retired fossil fuel appliance, not storing heated water we aren't using. Cons: High electricity costs, temperature changes when pressure changes for several secondsChris
Don't buy it…it's terrible,I bought the tempra24 plus from home depot, I installed all specified wires and circuits so it would work properly and efficiently but this this is horrible… my electric and water bill did go down even more than I had Anticipated but hate it…No constant temperature what so ever. I'm getting it removed and getting one installed by a professional.. the tempraplus was a waste of moneyBrian Lackie

Reviews:
A year ago we purchased a new home. I asked the contractor to install a tankless water heater. He installed an electric A O Smith tank unit instead and claimed that he researched tankless units and that they could not keep up with the volume of hot water our three person family would need. We live in a community that provides treated well water. After a year our hot water smelled strongly of sulfer. We were told that the diode in our tank would have to be changed either with a very expensive diode or with the standard one but done annually. Unfortunately A O Smith installs the diode's with a robot or a person that is determined that it would never come out. Removal attempts turned the bolt into a perfectly round piece. It is sunk 6" into the tank which prevents use of a pipe wrench. A new water heater was required or we had to live with the smell. I did my own research and determined that this 2400w tankless unit should provide all of the hot water our family would ever need. I purchased it from Zoro on a Friday and it was on our porch on Sunday when we got home from church. I spent the day replacing the unit. The tankless works great. We are very pleased with it. We have a large tub in our master bath that would only fill half way before the water in the 40 gallon tank model turned cold. The tankless unit stays hot until you turn it off.j The bonus is this takes up only a fraction of the room that the old unit required.Guest
Although this seems like the way to go, I ordered this figuring it would be perfect for the Basement suite that I'm putting in. Ordered it, my contractor took a look at it and informed me that most serviced residential homes do not have enough amps going to them to be able to run this as well as everything else in your home, for a commercial lot it would be fine. That the service to the home would need to be upgraded, which is an even bigger expense. So beware as to whether you're able to use this.frustrated renos
I self installed the unit a week ago. Since my existing electrical panel only had room for one double pole breaker I had to install a 100 amp breaker and run to a sub panel for the two 50 amp breakers required for the unit. I was able to mount the sub panel and the water heater on the wall in the space formerly occupied by the tank heater. I also installed a sediment filter on the input side of the heater. The installation went smoothly and was completed in less than a day. So far the unit is supplying plenty of hot water for my wife and I. We are able to take long, hot showers with no drop in water temperature or water pressure. It can also handle the dish washer and the washing machine, but not at the same time. The unit is well constructed and the installation instructions are good. Total cost of the unit, sub panel, breakers and other fittings came out to less than $800. All and all we are very satisfied and would recommend this unit for any household with similar requirements: 2 people, dish washer and laundry. Three or more people may require a larger unit.

Reviews:
Works great as long as you don't want to take a hot shower. Constant E5 code (cannot keep up with water flow) and shuts down the hot water so all you get is a cold shower. If you let the water just barly trickle outthen it heats up fine. I lost a lot of money setting this up only to find that it will not work unless the water is already warm. Now I have to spend more money to buy a tank hot water heater. Very disappointingRussell Randant
The tank failed and got water all in my house! I sent a warranty claim but never heard any response. I have sent pictures etc to show the product failed again i have yet to hear any response about the issue! Also i used the charts to decide what heater was right for my house but the unit never performed to our liking. It would barely put any water out if i would increase the flow it wouldnt heat the water up. Please contact me i'd love to share more detail.Daniel L
This water heater cannot handle 4.4 gallons per minute. It could not even keep up with my shower or kitchen faucet. It requires a lot of power too. It takes two 40 amp breakers and 8 guage wire to power the elements. When it cannot keep up, it flashes an error code and the troubleshooting guide suggests putting a flow regulator that limits it to 2 gallons per minute (less than half its advertised capacity).claytomcge_6

Reviews:
I've got a large house and more children than most. This unit produces sufficient hot water to run several showers at once and never run out, which is the main point. I'm very pleased with this unit. There's one oddity however; When first starting-up, the water temperature gradually increases until the set-point arrives at the delivery spot and holds there for a few moments, then the temperature wanes to lukewarm/cool, then back to specified temperature. This can be quite a jolt to the system if the user isn't prepared 🙂 But the change is gradual enough to get out of the way in time. This is annoying. The display alternates between my chosen set point "130 F" and "E5", which I assume is an error code. But none of the online documentation provides an error code key from which to ascertain the issue. I have two three-way valves in my installation which allows me to run my system in tankless only, tank only, or tankless preheat followed by tank. In the summer I run tankless only, in winter I typically run tankless as preheat and draw from the tank unit.Engineer Dude
Great heater but relatively short life: I've had to replace this unit twice now in the kitchen in the last four years due to the heating element failing. Moving to Rinnai.Christopher
i had it professionally installed and its keeps popping a fuse and stops working all the time . i think it finally completely failed after 1 years of use only and 900 later. i home RHEEM will send me replacement as its under warranty. but seems liek its one of the worse ones to have. all bad ratings. i would like to upgrade to a better one.asta

It works fine, but it arrived in a shipping box with no manufactruer box inside, just the water heater. One of the dials has come lose and I had to screw it back on. There was no manual. There was no power cord, but it may not have come with one ( I couldn’t tell you since I didn’t get a box or a manual). There was water inside the unit. I think someone must have gotten it before me and then returned it and factory pure didn’t notice- that or the falsely sold me a used unit. I went ahead and installed it, though, because I had already opened up my water line and removed the old unit. If anyone from factory pure is reading this, I’ll forgive you for a fifty dollar partial refund- that’s about what I’d have expected to save by buying used.cade j.
Love the ease of installation and the way it heats water. I installed two of them in a building I have. There are two apartments. Each unit is 1500 square feet and has two bedrooms and two bathrooms. It has worked perfectly for the last year. I’m a true fan!Scott
As for the breaker tripping in other homes, as a licensed electrician of 26 years, I would advise you to take an amperage reading during operation. Most home owners do not have multi meters with an amp clamp so that could be difficult I understand. If the heater is not drawing over 55 amp during operation you may have a defective circuit breaker, it happens. Try replacing your breaker. If the heater is drawing over 55 amps ther is a problem with the heater.Andy A.

Should have done this a lot sooner. Now instead of having to deal with cold water at the kitchen sink for over a minute, we have nice hot water in 2-3 seconds. Got all of the parts (Sharkbite elbows and ball valves, along with a set of 1/2" FIP supply lines) here at Supply House except for a 2' piece of PEX I purchased locally. Most of the work for this project was running the dedicated circuit up from the basement in the sink cabinet. Even that wasn't that tough. Supply House has become my good to place for DIY plumbing and HVAC needsTom in NH
Purchased the four gallons tank instead of the two gallons. Hot water in 3 seconds instead of minutes. When I'm using a lot of hot water it starts to cool a little with the induction of cold water into the tank, but it's still more than just warm and heats back up soon when the hot water from my tankless heater reaches the faucet. By then the tank is refilled with hot water and if someone comes behind me, they have instant hot water also instead of having to wait for the tank to heat up again. LOVE IT!!!Hot and Happy
Well made little water heater. Perfect for under sink or point of use. This is the fourth I've had. Most important thing is to open it up and check the anode rod. Every year or two. It's not as hard as some people keep complaining about. Just keep it in mind when you initially install the heater. When that rod deteriorates and is gone, the heater WILL fail and leak.wrknmn

Reviews:
Like all of the 1 star ratings, my unit failed after about a year. It began leaking which caused it to short out. When I called the customer service, they asked for pictures of the leak and the heating elements. They immediately blamed the leak on me for not maintaining the unit. After I prove I did they asked me to send a video of the unit tripping the breaker which made no sense considering the unit was leaking water. In the end they recommended I re-solder the hole. Really?! So, for the sake of having hot water in the middle of winter, I do. Nine months later another hole appears and the exact same issue occurs. This time I demand a replacement after once again being blamed for the issue. After they run out of excuses on why it happened they then say I never registered my warranty, which I did. How in the world do I prove that I registered my warranty when the same people I registered it with claims I didn't? This product has NO support if and when it fails. STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY!! Buy a better unit for a little more money AND keep all of the warranty information just in case.Andre'
To use this unit you will need to have an electrician bring in 3 high voltage lines into your home. $$$$. Any time you use the unit all the lights in the house flicker. After months of that annoyance I contacted dealer and was given a new control panel that I had to install myself. It solved the problem for a couple months then back to the flickering. Two years later the unit just stopped working. Plumbing service call told me I needed another new control panel. Now company says I don’t have lifetime warranty because I didn’t send in warranty card. They claim That they sent me replacement last time as a courtesy. This company is so short sited, they probably paid staff to argue with me more than it would have cost to replace the part. I bought a new part and had it installed…..back to the flickering lights. And do not buy this thinking you will cover the cost with savings. I’ve seen no difference in my electric bills. Read some other reviews. It’s not just the control panel that is garbage.Val
The first couple of months this product was awesome. Water was super hot and was easy to adjust. Then we noticed the water would not get as hot. Adjusted temperature on unit to 140 degrees, removed the filter off end of kitchen sink and nothing happened. Went through the virtual tech guide multiple times and found heating element was out. Tech support shipped a new one. Installed it, no change. Call back and was told you have to soak the heating elements in vinegar for 2-3 hours every six months. Reluctantly did it, no change. Even had it worked you should not have to do maintenance like this on a product not even a year old. Have had experience with other tankless heaters and never had to do maintenance. I've requested a supervisor call me 3-4 times and have yet to receive a call back. This has been going on for two months. Do not go with this product. Product quality is poor and tech support is as well.Daniel Andrews

Easy to install and seems to work well so far. Water is hot at the tap end which is a good thing.Reviewed by Heater Shop customer
I bought this tankless water heater several years ago to put in a trailer house at the lake. It worked so well that I bought a second one for a houseboat. I read many reviews on different brands and decided on the Stiebel Eltron after researching. I have been completely satisfied and am glad that I chose this particular brand. #sweepstakesBG
I should have made the switch to tankless years ago. This product is superior to the huge water heater I used to have. On demand hot water, the unit looks nice, & the quality is great. I dont run out of hot water any more!bthes97

For about 6 months it was working fine, then I turned on the hot water and it came out cold. I noticed smoke coming from the unit (ECO 8) and immediately ran for the circuit breaker to shut off. I notified the Eco Smart company through their website contact page, but they never even responded. $200 out the window, but fortunately the house didn't catch fire! To make matters worse, no warranty if you install it yourself! I'm not calling a plumber and electrician for such a simple installation.wutsitsa
Got to me fast and a really great movie.annhen0
This works very well although installing the electricity part was somewhat difficult because of the wire size fitting junction boxes located in the nearby cabinets. Plumbing parts were all available at my local Home Depot. I've reduced the temperature from 120 degrees twice now to 105 because the water becomes quite hot, especially if you turn it off and then back on where it has an opportunity to heat in place rather than simply flowing through the unit. I'm only using it to rinse a few items in the kitchen sink rather than having to wait until the main hot water unit, located 75' away, reaches my sink. And I did need to use Teflon Tape on the provided, 1/2" fittings,….souian

Specifically this is better than my previous 21kw tankless. Lower flow rate cut-on (was 0.085 to 0.025). All metal/aluminum housing; plastic housing on old unit was melting from prolonged internal heat. Would recommend rubberized / insulated internal heat windings prolong life expectancy. Not an engineer, but just a thought. Love the product though…..samkson
Needed this for extra boost for a walk-in tub. My wife's 75 gallon tub required more than our electric water heater could handle. At first I thought this would handle the job alone to give her quick warm water. Wrong. Even though I live in mid-Florida with supply temperature at 65 degrees the flow capacity was not enough. I could have gone with a larger unit but i would have need a bigger electric panel. Yikes! So, I kept my electric heater and reinstalled it as a preheater for the Eco. Problem solved. Plenty of capacity now with the preheater set at 100 degrees. I really thought I could do away with my original water heater and utilize that big space. So if you need this for a really big tub or demand get the bigger one if you have the electrical capacity.wbsmgparts
This fits our purposes very well- 2 people, one bathroom. Saves space and $. Does require 2 40amp breakers so professional installation needed for warranty. Had some questions that tech helpline were able to handle well.anonymous

Reviews:
Nicely made unit. Clean lines, nice display, lightweight, easy to mount. You'll need a terminal box to wire it up since it comes with it's own pigtail cable (they don't want you to open up the case since it will void it's warranty, apparently; multi breaker units might be different), so I bought an inexpensive 60 amp A/C unit type cut-off switch box with a pull out switch. Just mount it near the heater on the wall and run your 6 gauge wire to it from your breaker panel. I just wish they had included adapters so that you can plumb it to 3/4" piping, so you'll have to buy your own if you wish to connect it to your existing 3/4" pipe. I had trouble using pipe dope (maybe it was too old or the wrong kind?), so I switched to Teflon tape (5 layers) on each fitting and that did the trick. Love the easy to turn dial, press to turn on/off feature and easy to read digital display which comes on when hot water is called for. Now, we'll see how long it lasts before some type of failure…scottcollins
so just got this unit instated and replaced 6 years old Titan (220watts)that just hasn't been getting up desire temperature lately. read bunch of reviews and this unit had better ratings . it was easy to switch from old unit as water and power hookups are almost the same . tested and it want keep up with fully open single sink , I had to reduce water flow at inlet pipe . did not measure but it seams im getting aprx. 2 gal a minute. no way to use 2 outlets at same time. btw we are in coastal northern Washington stateromanles
New 11.8 installed. Sometimes will get water at set temp. Most of the time it is well below set temp and will intermittently for short period of time jump up to set temp irrespective of other usage (toilet/sink).Larry

Reviews:
After using a tankless and regular tank water heater for years, I would not recommend a "Tank less" unless you absolutely need the space. Issues with trying to take a hot shower then someone uses the hot water say, in the kitchen, surprise! Your hot shower turns cold, lol.aldo63
200 amp service. This thing pulling 66 amps . Heat pump pulling 90 amps . If wife cooks, cleans and drys cloths, I think it wont work. Lights dim now with heat pump on and water heater on. Just my thoughts . So now I have it sitting on a shelf collecting dust. But I really cant blame titan. I should have done more than an hour of home work before ordering.metalpayed

Similar to ones I found in Lowes, but less than half the price. Easy to install, and seems to work finetybeend
Easy to install and provides hot water quickly. My 2nd one since the first heating element became ineffective with mineral deposits after 2 years of use. Recommend removing the element once a year and cleaning to prevent having to purchase a new one. Great product.ergologic
Works just fine for access to hot water in my barn. Use the hot water in the winter to pour into my automatic waters in the stalls to thaw them out when the temperature gets down to 22 or lower and they freeze.Dunsey

Reviews:
The heater requires dielectric unions when installed with metallic pipe. Rona does not carry them. We went to a large reputable supplier and bought 2. The female thread of the union does not extend all the way to the inside shoulder, but stops about 5mm short. The male spigots on the unit are fully threaded, so when the parts mate the shoulder of the union is about 5mm clear of the sealing washer. The spigot on the unit should have a plain (core size) section to take the fittings available. Alternatively suitable unions or adaptors should be supplied or available. Presently, the unit when coupled up leaks at those joints. We have tried both PTFE tape and a sealing compound, but naturally neither works on a parallel thread. We tried the "chat" for the manufacturer and "Gilbert" does not understand what we are saying. A second problem is with mounting the unit to the supplied bracket. If you should try one of these, then test assemble the mounting bracket into the unit off the wall. There is a hard adhesive layer which prevents this and it needs to be removed when the unit is resting on something. "Gilbert" did not understand this previous problem either. This seems to be an example of people having the ability to buy and sell a product without actually understanding it, – depressingly common.Ticked2
I bought a used rv that the previous owner had purchased the 7 gal ecotemp. He had the water connected but not the electric yet. When I bought the rv, I ran the electric outlet and plugged the heater in, but nothing happened. No light on, nothing. Disconnected it, took the cover off and it smelled like an electric short. Now I have to buy a heater to replace the new one that doesn't work.Kathy
I bought one of these units in March 2021. It's actually a really nice little water heater. On my unit, the heating element failed in early June of this year and I have been trying since then to get a new one. They plain and simply will not ship parts for this item to Canada and they do not list parts for it on their Canadian website. What this means for the customer is if a major component like the thermostat or heating element fails the entire unit needs to be replaced. Nice unit but there is zero support for it in Canada. I think their smaller tanks have better support, but make sure you can get the consumables before you buy. I'm taking mine out of service and am purchasing a small Rheem tank instead. I cannot recommend this unit based on the complete absence of product support from the manufacturer.William R

This heats the water great in the summer time, a little cooler in the winter time when the ground is cooler. Make sure you measure the distance from you furthest shower to you water hear location before purchasing, to ensure that your water heater will heat the water efficiently.Anonymous
I was really surprised how energy efficient and compact this water heater is compared To what i grew up with. I live the Bay Area where people are looking for great products for small spaces. The great thing about this is it is suitable for larger homes as well.
This is the best deal I could get, heating up almost instantly for my entire house. I’d highly recommend. Comparing to what it does, it is fairly compact size.
