I received this product and was eager to trial it. There’s nothing quite like a colour touch up to make you feel a little more refreshed and energised! The product was super easy to use and everything needed was contained in one compact box. I followed the directions with ease and all progressed to plan. The end result was reasonably true to the desired colour although my hair did end up more orange than I had anticipated. I accept this can happen with hair colours because there are so many factors that contribute to the end result. The hair colour did address my primary concern – covering the dreaded greys! The smell was not offensive as can happen with some brands and I liked the fuss free application process. A major benefit is the convenience of doing this at home at a time that suits me and a cost that is budget friendly! I have had my colour now for a week and the colour at this stage is still looking fresh with great coverage. In particular, I have used the shade 'Darkest brown' which is the same shade I'm trialing today. The shade has always been is a lovely vibrant colour and the colour result is similar to my natural hair colour. The dye promises to 100% grey hair coverage and it lives up to its promise. Preparing the dye for application is nice and easy. After applying the gloves that are included in the packaging, you pour the colour formula into the bottle of developer before placing the lid back on and shaking the bottle until completely mixed. It's that easy! Then starting at the roots, you evenly apply the dye. The dye goes on smoothly and, surprisingly, the dye scent isn't as strong as other brands. Other brands tend to have a strong chemical smell which makes my eyes water and nose tingle when breathing it in. Clairol have done a great job at producing a hair product with a low scent. One of the best things about Clairol's nice n' easy hair dyes is the short processing times. Unlike other brands that have a processing time of upwards to an hour to reach your desired shade, these dye have an average processing time of just 25 minutes. The short processing time means you can dye your hair during your lunch break, before a night out, or before a date, without it taking up too much of your time. The rinsing process is also quite a smooth and easy process. After applying some warm water, give your hear/head a little massage and then rinse until the water runs clear from all the dye. It normally takes around two minutes for the water to run clear. Then using the conditioning Clairol conditioning treatment that comes with the hair dye, you apply from roots to tips and leave for a couple minutes before rinsing. The conditioning treatment has a lovely scent and is nice and thick. It's almost like applying a luxurious hair mask. It glides onto the hair smoothly and evenly. After rinsing the conditioning treatment you can instantly feel how hydrated you hair feels. Dying your hair often dehydrates it and your hair can feel a little worse for wear. Clairol's hair dyes are gentle on your hair and the conditioning treatment prevents damage and keeps your hair hydrated and feeling lovely. After towel-drying my hair, I blow-dried my hair until was dry. Looking in the mirror you could instantly see how vibrant and lovely the hair colour result was, and it looked and felt really healthy. I am always so very impressed with the results every time and I often get compliments from friends and family members. As my hair grows fairly quickly, I use this product every 2-3 months to help cover grey hairs. Despite dying my hair so regularly, my hair has remained healthy and manageable, and hasn't compromised my hair in any way. The only downside I can mention is that the dye stains your skin. Normally hair spray or acetone on a cotton ball or cotton pad helps remove hair dyes from skin but I found this dye to be lot stronger and barely budged from the skin. I also tried scrubbing with soap and dishwashing detergent but the dye only faded slightly. It took a few days of scubbing before the dye faded completely. I have actually used this dye in the past, and can't recommend it enough. The range of colours on offer is wonderful as there is something there for everyone. I have dull brown hair, so usually opt for a warm shade to brighten my colour – I used the Medium Chestnut Brown 5RB. The instructions are clear and easy to follow and after spending 10 mins applying the product as thoroughly as I could, it took a simple 25 minutes to penetrate before washing it out and conditioning. The colour completely covered my greys (which was my main objective), but overall my hair looks so much healthier as it is shiny and the colour has more life to it. My favourite thing about this dye is that the colour brings out the natural highlights I have and it looks really natural. I received this hair color for free from Influenster for my honest opinion. I used it on my hair which tends to be dry and gets bleached out by the sun in the upper layers. I had quite a bit of white growing in certain areas and I had a lot of color difference between the upper layers and underneath where my hair was much darker. This hair color was easy to use and didn’t smell terrible while I was using it. After I rinsed it out, my hair didn’t feel like straw as is usual with hair color. This hair color was much gentler on my hair. The color difference was very subtle as my hair was sun bleached on the layers where the sun hits it anyway. My hair is naturally strawberry blonde to red and this evened out the colors and made it to where the underneath layers matched the top layers much more. It also completely covered my white hairs. It looks very natural too. I’m happy with the results.angelica.h

I will say that my hair was already kind of gray and on the ashy side to begin with, and it did make it a bit more golden. But the final color matched the description on the box, I found the conditioner to work well, the products were easy to use, and I have no adverse side effects. I appreciate that this line is formulated with gentle ingredients, rather than harsh chemicals, because I’m very concerned about hair breakage and fall out right now. I will say that the color didn’t seem to grab on to my grays as well as it could have, but that is probably because the hair was so much lighter than the color result was supposed to be. I do enjoy that it left in my hair is natural color variation, rather than dying it all one flat monotone shade. I would try those hair dye again, and I am surprised I’m saying that. 👍👍👍 I suggest doing some research yourself on the ingredients, if turning to a less abrasive chemical die sounds good to you. Long review here! I was so excited to try this hair color (shade 5.0) as I have dyed my hair at home for years using L'Other brands of hair color. My natural hair color is a dark brown (level 3-4) and I like to lighten and brighten my hair just to a level 5. First, I love the fully recyclable packaging even though it's not super sturdy – totally fine to sit in my bathroom. The instructions for this were typical except the developer that comes in the squeeze bottle was VERY thin, while there is a color tube that you mix into the bottle which has a thicker consistency. Once mixed, the color thickened nicely and didn't drip much. A big complaint is that the color tube was VERY hard for me to get out by squeezing; it's one of those stiff metal tubes and my hands were really suffering as I tried to make sure I squeezed it all out in order to get the intended mix. The scent of the color was slightly floral but otherwise not too offensive. I followed the directions and applied the color to my roots first, which I usually don't like doing because I get "hot roots" that turn orange. I was SO pleased that this color did not do that! The color came out even, truly neutral without any orange, and slightly darker than other "medium brown" shades I've used. (It behaves like a semi permanent color and doesn't seem to lift at all.) It covered my few grays and came off my skin decently but not completely after rinsing. It was kind of difficult to wash out due to the thickness and it did stain my towel that I used to dry my hair, which doesn't usually happen with my regular dye. I spent a really long time rinsing it before and after using the conditioner. My hair feels like it could use a bit more conditioner, but it is shiny and looks great. All in all, the fact that my roots match the rest of my hair when dyeing them first is a HUGE pro to me, outweighing the staining and the extremely difficult color tube. I really liked how this turned out on my hair. My hair is already pretty dark but my roots grow in pretty fast so this was absolutely needed. It does not have a super strong chemical smell, and left my hair feeling soft: I have problems using color that often damages my curl pattern. This did not! This is my hair immediately after wash. For reference my hair is a medium to light brown with an ash undertone and some gray hairs. Midnight blue is really nice with an undertone of a blue tint but no actual blue to your hair. Jet black is very dark, sharp and glossy looking. Natural black still solid coverage but a softer tone to it. Chestnut brown has a golden almost auburn color to it. Red hot rhythms is stunning when first applied but quickly loses color in less than a week making your hair look very much like a box dye job. Golden blond is true golden warm tone but again you need a professional to lighten your hair first in order for the color to take all the way through your hair. I don't know who has their nose broken, but the conditioner smells absolutely fabulous. Reminds of a salon honestly. obviously when you're dying you need to have a fan going but even that's not a bad smell. Bottom line as with any color going darker than your hair tone is always easy and possible. And going lighter impossible without a bleach or toner to lighten it first before depositing color. I really liked this brand, it was new to me and this is how I feel about it. Now that I’ve went through the process of dying my hair and the color has now been in for a full day. First the packaging was very neat and you knew what you were working with. Once opened everything was in the box with easy to read instructions. I was super excited to see the dye bottle was a twist off top. Usually I have to cut the tip of the dye bottle in the boxes dye that I normally use. The dye mixed after a few hard shakes, but once I poured into my hair I could see that it didn’t mix all the way so had to give a bit more hard shakes to get it to fully mix. The liquid itself was runny, I like my hair dye a bit less runny. The smell of it was not too powering, and once on the head and scalp it did burn a bit while I sat to catch my hair. The washout was nice and not messy. A few rinses and it came out clear. The product came with a very nice sized conditioner, that has left my hair super soft. The conditioner had a very nice smell. It reminded me of tropical fruit. My hair still smells like it, and I work all day. All my hair caught the color and came out great. I would recommend trying this brand if you have it within reach. I decided to try this product. I have black hair, which I have dyed with black hair dye to cover grays. I knew that this will lighten my hair and pull out the red. Now it's too brassy. What color can I put on this to tone it down? Blue conditioner? I was hoping for a milky brown color as the end result.Selly

I have medium brunette hair and this kit turned my hair orange. It says that people with brunette to black hair can use this product. I have used many highlighting kits by L’Oréal and had wonderful honey blonde highlighting results. I also regularly color my roots with L’Oréal, so I am not new to coloring. I bought this kit by Clairol on sale and what a mistake that was. I will only use L’Oréal from now on. Do not recommend.Stefanie

Love It. I've now used this 3 times. The first at the tips, the second up on the mids and the third was to add highlights. I used a highlighting cap and use blue conditioner every few weeks. It did not damage my hair in the slightest. I got a lot of compliments. I have natural dark brown hair and it came out an ashy/caramel color and not the slightest bit orange. I will mention that my hair was 100% virgin. There was no color on my hair when I used this…that may affect the results.Kristen

My hair has been through it. I was doing rainbow colors till covid hit and then got ballsy and tried bleaching my hair; burned off a good chunk. Followed up by a hairdresser tangling my hair to where I lost another chunk :(. It's been a bad few years on my hair to say the least and I'm in repair mode now. It has been a long time since I had done a cap highlight on myself but I was open to switching up my hair color and trying out Revlon’s Color Effects Frost Glow. I used the smaller hook end of the tool because I wanted a subtle highlight. It took a few tries before I got the method down for pulling the hair through the cap. I think it is really important to keep the tool flat to your head with the hook pointed up, to get the best results without pulling at your hair. Because I didn’t want a dramatic change, I planned to only pulled hair through the circled holes and only in the front and crown portions of the cap. I found it much too difficult to pull hair from any farther back on my head, so there was no chance I was going to be able to accomplish an all-over highlight, even if I wanted to. I would recommend having someone help you pull hair through the cap if you are going for a full head of highlights and definitely if you are new to cap highlights. The mixing and coloring process was super easy. The mixture did not smell harsh which was definitely appreciated. I would prefer a better fitting pair of gloves to wear. As you apply the mixture and make sure each strand is saturated, the gloves start to slide off and get in the way. I intended to check my hair after 10 minutes but my timer never went off, so it was 15 minutes before I checked. When I checked it, I panicked because it looked very blonde and brassy compared to my chocolate cherry brown hair color. After rinsing it off and shampooing and conditioning with the included toning shampoo and conditioner, I felt a little bit better about the color. It still looked very light (mostly in front) when I started to dry my hair with my Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer. After styling, other than looking a little more 2000’s chunky highlight at the front of my face than I would have liked, I am very happy with the look! I was actually pleasantly surprised that the color chart on the box was accurate! It would be nice to get a bigger packet of the toning conditioner and shampoo. I have shoulder-length fine hair and used the whole packet. Even putting two of each packet would be beneficial especially to those with long or thick hair. I could possibly see myself using this kit in the future, though I would probably force my husband to help pull hair through the cap. From hook to styling, the whole process took me about 3 1/2 hours. It gets a little chaotic trying to hold a mirror and angle yourself just right to reach all of the holes on the cap. If you’re looking to save yourself a hundred (or more) dollars and you have the time and patience, I would definitely recommend this Revlon Color Effects kit!devon.g

Do you ever get tired of dropping $250+ at the salon for highlights? Especially when your hair grows super fast like mine and you have to go often? I’ll be honest, at 13, I had a very bad experience with box dye (haven’t we all?) and swore off it ever since. Well, with very limited skills and a bit more confidence, I gave this box a try. I figured, “it’s summer. If it goes bad there is always the sun.” To my surprise, It didn’t go bad at all, not even close! I actually have some bomb, salon style highlights! I love that this kit comes with a cap and hook. It took a few tries, but once I got the hang of hooking and pulling the hair through I actually found it quite fun and relaxing. The cap goes on nice and tight and will muffle your hearing while it’s on, so I totally suggest doing this when everyone is in bed and you don’t need to really hear anything for a while. The cap is magical because it really does an amazing job at protecting the rest of your hair. There is literally no way to end up with bleach drips or leopard spots on any other part of your hair. This kit is basically fool proof. I pulled my hair through every single hole of the cap. My husband helped me with the very back, as I didn’t want to miss any hair underneath because I wear my hair up often. He had no problems with the hook either. (Because my hair turned out so well, he now thinks he is a master colorist 🙄) My hair is VERY thick. I was worried that I wouldn’t have enough dye with just 1 box, but to my surprise I had just enough to coat every single strand. The color is very easy to mix. Just empty the contents of a powder packet into a bottle containing liquid and shake vigorously. I really appreciate that I didn’t have to worry about having color on too long in one spot and not long enough in others because it looks goes on at the same time, another reason why the cap is so great. I like the smell of hair bleach and always have. This has that smell, but it is very light and not overpowering. My roots were quite dark, so I left this on for 50 minutes checking every 5. I absolutely did NOT want my hair looking orange (hello flashbacks from teenage years!) I was a bit scared to remove the cap because I felt like it was going to pull my hair out at the roots, but it came off with no issues or hair loss. I really love the purple shampoo and conditioner that was provided in the box. It smelled wonderful and made it very easy to get all the product out. I do comb my conditioner through my hair and I did that with this. My hair didn’t feel dry, crisp or brittle at all. The conditioner had a very nice slip and hydrated very well. I’m incredibly pleased with the results overall. My hair has absolutely zero orange tones to it at all. There are so many baby highlights that my hair doesn’t look streaky, chunky or strange. The strands blend in so well giving my hair an overall natural look. My hair feels super soft and healthy too! I was worried it would get brittle because I left the dye on right up until the max time, but I haven’t had a single issue with my hair falling out, breaking or feeling fried. I have always been a fan of Revlon and I have always utilized this product consistently for many years. I attempted to use the product today and was extremely disappointed that they changed the "hook" that is included in the box. It is not as referenced in the "included" items as it has been reconfigured to now be added on the end of the "mixer" versus as a separate item and seems to be cheaper plastic. It bent the very first time I tried it and only got more flexible after only 3 hair pulls (I have very short hair) and I realized it was not usable. I even tried to fix the hook and make my own "notch" several times with no success so unless you have your own "hook" this kit is not usable. It is extremely frustrating to plan to highlight my hair, get everything set up and then realize I can't use the kit due to changes in quality.Disappointed

I have darker brown hair with reddish highlights (especially in the summer). My family LOVES to hike and backpack. Ticks can sometimes be a problem when we hike and the tiny pests are hard to find amongst my dark hair, so I decided to dye it as light as I can. I got the extra light natural blonde because I thought I'd end up sort of strawberry blonde or light auburn. It did! I also have olive skin, so the strawberry blonde/light auburn hair color looks great on me. It's not blonde, but I started with hair much darker than recommended on the box. Knowing this, I went ahead and dyed my hair. It did NOT turn out orange, as I was guessing it might, but a beautiful reddish blonde that looks great on me. About 10 years ago,I purchased Revlon hair dye routinely. I don’t know if the formula changed but I stopped because it seemed to dry out my hair and damage it. I saw this new natural formula and thought I would try it. WOW! It’s the best natural hair dye I’ve used in years. Used the Light Auburn on my gray/white hair and wow, it came out wonderfully. I am 70 and decided I am sick and tired of the gray…wanted something vibrant and stylish (my hair is buzzed on the sides and longer on top) and I got a whole new look. Easy to use, doesn't smell horrible, but the dye does stain the shower upon rinsing, but did wash away with a bleach/ bathroom cleaner…only drawback. The color at least on my hair came out more like a copper-y auburn. (left on the 35 minutes as recommended for this shade) If I went to a salon it would have been pretty expensive..so not only do I love the color, I loved the price.Corey

I didn't even open the hair color box before today…I wanted it to be a cool reveal! Unfortunately, I didn't receive the conditioner or the stain eraser, so this could be considered an "incomplete" result…but I wanted to review what I could. I started out with platinum blonde hair and my roots were growing in silver and dark grey. IGK had it's work cut out for it. The box color was Olsen's (I'm guessing to replicate MK A Olsen), and my hair looks almost too natural blonde!* I can't decide if it lays a color on, or bleaches your hair. Either way, it's a great color to be'naturally blonde' if that's what you're going for. Why the 4 stars instead of 5? Because I had to scramble to find an extra hair coloring kit (to steal the shampoo/conditioner packets) in order to get it washed/conditioned properly… because we all know, a standard conditioner doesn't cut it when you're stressing out your tresses with harsh chemicals no matter how nice it smells. In summation, it's a great color, smells a little odd (like a cooked green vegetable) but not bad, made my skin tingle/sting a bit, and the kit wasn't complete. *pictures show the color changed the platinum to a more medium natural blonde, and lightened the roots – which are normally pretty dark greyjennifer.l

This was my first time trying an IGK hair color product. I found it quite easy to do. The packaging it comes in opens up into a tray that shows you step by step how to instructions. The only thing it didn’t tell was whether your hair should be washed that day or not and I was able to find that info on their site. This product has several steps some of which I was not used to from other brands. It included a barrier gel to put on your forehead and ears to keep from getting dye on your skin. I’ve never seen that before with other brands but it really was a big help. The dye itself was easy to mix and it didn’t have any terrible ammonia smell or anything. It’s thick in consistency so you don’t have to worry about it running much either. After washing out and treating with the conditioning step there is an eraser step which helps with cleanup. That was very nice to have. It easily removed all dye that managed to get on my arms and sink. I will say the shade that was chosen doesn’t really feel like it’s very different that my starting shade. It did however give my hair added depth and tone. I see different highlights and lowlights and my hair is definitely much shinier. My hair even feels softer.This hair color is cruelty free as well as vegan. I definitely would recommend this hair color brand and will be purchasing the next time I color.shivon.s

I was so excited to try IGK’s Permanent Color Kit because they are a cruelty free brand and the product is clean and vegan. My normal hair color is dark brown and I tried the color Back to Brown (5N). To be honest, I had gotten kind of lazy with covering my grays (which somehow seemed to multiply rapidly during the pandemic), so I was in dire need of coloring my hair. The first thing I noticed was that my kit didn’t include gloves, which must’ve been a mistake since the instructions specifically say to put on gloves before applying the color. Since I didn’t want to have my hands stained dark brown, I ended up having to ruin a pair of rubber kitchen gloves, which ended up being pretty bulky and cumbersome during the process. The kit also didn’t include an applicator brush of any kind, but thankfully I happened to have a spare applicator brush from an old dpHUE hair color kit because there’s no way I could work the color through my hair with just the bulky rubber kitchen gloves. My grays are pretty stubborn so I left the color on for over an hour (the instructions say 35 mins but 45 mins for stubborn grays). Aside from the color, the kit included packets of Protect Color Block Barrier Gel, Erase Stain Removing Cleanser, and Post-Color Treatment Mask, which were nice touches. However, the instructions say to cleanse with your favorite IGK shampoo before applying the Treatment Mask, so I was confused why they didn’t include a sample packet of shampoo as well. I didn’t have IGK shampoo on hand at home so I used a different brand of shampoo for color-treated hair instead. Unfortunately, the end result was pretty disappointing. Despite letting the color process for over an hour, the grey coverage was awful. I don’t know if having to use bulky rubber kitchen gloves was to blame, but I could still see plenty of grays peeking through immediately after I completed the process, which you can see in the before and after pics. The missing gloves, lack of applicator brush and shampoo packet are inconvenient but nothing I can’t work through. However, when I don’t even have complete grey coverage afterwards, there’s no point even using this product. There are other cruelty-free brands out there with better results so I wouldn’t recommend this product.kirsten.c

I love to change my hair color from time to time to something different, so I applied to test out the New Revlon Color Silk Buttercream in shade Light Golden Brown. I was so excited when my Revlon Hair Dye arrived, the Revlon package is so intriguing with such beautiful viberate color! I couldnt help but notice that this hair dye is an All-In-One and comes with not one, not two, but three Butters & a Nourishing Mask as well as a Precision Brush, instructions, and gloves!! I really love that Revlon literally thought of everything and included it all, especially the 2 packs of conditioner!! You use one of them after you wash your hair to lock in your gorgeous color then use the other one two weeks later! In my opinion the hair dye conditioner that comes in the kit are absolutely the best conditioners ever, not only do they smell incredibly amazing they leave your hair feeling silky and so soft! I really wish that these type of hair conditioners were individually bottled and sold separately as well! Moving on to the hair dye- my hair was a medium brown and I mixed up the hair dye and covered my hair. Then proceeded to wait for 25 minutes before washing the color out and then applying the conditioner. I'm here to tell you that this hair dye kit is truly one of the best that I have ever used! I really love the viberate Light Golden Brown look and the fact that My hair is soft! I will definitely be using the Revlon All-In-One Kit for my hair coloring and I highly recommend this amazing kit to everyone!Scrim92

The BEST "drugstore" hair color I've used! First off, I love the precision brush and how mess free the buttercream is. The brush is bigger than I expected which was nice. I dye my hair frequently and I notoriously drip hair color onto my bathroom sink and floor and all over my "hair dye shirt." I didn't drop any dye mixture for the first time ever with Revlons Colorsilk buttercream! The instructions are easy to follow and I was surprised that the gloves included in the kit are actually decent quality. I didn't rip through them and dye my hands like I have with other brands, which can be pretty horrific when I use black dye like this one. The buttercream formula is ammonia free and truely has NO harsh chemical smell like every other brand ive used. Just that fact alone made me feel like it was going to be GOOD for my hair. Hair dye that is legitimately nourishing for your hair and not damaging is unheard of with drugstore dyes. Being a frequent dyer, this is vital! The buttercream was super easy to rinse out and I could instantly feel the difference in the way my hair felt. I LOVED the post coloring conditioning treatment! It smelled amazing, felt amazing, and having it in addition to the nourishing buttercream, gave me the softest hair I've had in a looooong time. The color is absolutely stunning. It covered my uneven, bleached, streaked, and damaged hair evenly. Just when i thought my excitement about the dye was over, Revlon includes a 2-week nourishing mask! Once again I got to experience a change in my hair that blew me away. To actually feel the 4 nourishing oils work is exactly what my hair has needed for so long. I picked this colour probably about 6 to 12 months ago. Wasn't sure about it at first. I have dark brown hair naturally. I usually dye it a chestnut colour. So this is a bit different than what I usually dye my hair with. But people have been complimenting how they love the colour my hair, so I kept it this colour since then, and I absolutely love it. It is my favorite colour for my hair. I really hope they don't discontinue this colour, as this will probably be my lifetime hair colour lol….. Although I'm having troubles finding it in stores right now, so it's making me a little worried that is just a limited time. And if that's the case, I don't know what to do for my hair colour. Go back to my chestnut colours. I do recommend this color and product. Love how it feels in my hair. My hair soft and the colour is very vibrant. It lasts long time. I do wash my hair with cool to cold water though. It helps keep the red bright longer. One thing though, it does continue to run every time you wash your hair so when your hair is wet it will stain your towels, or your shirts, or bed, or pillows. This is the first time I have ever dyed my hair, I’ve had naturally red curly hair all my life but wanted to change it up a bit. I’ve always wanted to dye my hair burgundy so I got shade BR2 passion fruit. I will say it is such a pretty color but it isn’t exactly like the picture on the box. I’m sure that’s to be expected especially since I already have natural red hair. The color turned my red hair into a darker color with purple undertones, there’s definitely a noticeable difference which is what I was looking for. The reason for 3 stars is because this hair dye smells absolutely HORRIBLE. The whole time I was applying it to my hair my eyes were watering as well as my nose burning. It felt like I had inhaled a ton of chemicals, even almost 10 hours later It still feels as if I’d inhaled chemicals. This was my first time dying my hair at home. I have medium brown hair and when longer it has natural highlights. Since I wear it short, the darker colors clash with the gray, so I got this since the box matched my natural color. It definitely covered all gray and was easy to apply (I used bowl and brush instead of squeeze bottle). However, it came out as a copper color highlighting my hair, not simple ash brown. I like the color, though! But it’s just not what was on the box. The other nice thing about this color compared to colors I’ve had at salons is it didn’t irritate my skin at all. I have very sensitive skin, and this didn’t sting or burn, like I’ve had from salons. Also a plus is the after color conditioner. It leaves your hair SOO soft and smooth. I’m continuing to use it about twice a week to keep my hair smooth since the small bottle lasts a while on short hair.LucasA

The ammonia smell hits you when you first squeeze the colour out, but it mixes nicely with the Schwarzkopf dedicated developer. It’s smooth and has opaque coverage. 100% grey coverage when mixed with natural, large colour selection. I use it for certain clients but not everyone.gina.s

If a hair dye could be said to be a soul-mate… I have found my soul-mate! For years, I have used those direct deposit "fun" colour type dyes on part of my hair. Some brands are better than others, of course, but they always faded out too fast for me, or left me with stains everywhere (and not just from wet hair… but while dry… pink sheets, pink fingernails – from merely running my fingers through my dry hair!), so there was always some sort of drawback with them. I have naturally porous hair, so I never needed to pre-bleach in order to get coverage (luckily, I also never aimed for a pastel, either) despite having around a 6 or 7 level hair and auburn/ginger in colour (the orange in my hair did mean that the end colour was not true to the intended colour, though). I did pre-bleach for this colour, but only to remove the last bits of a deposit dye and because I was unsure about the coverage of this dye. I shouldn't have worried. Not only did it take wonderfully to the bleached hair (and softened it back up to near-undamaged, as my hair did not like being bleached at all), but it also covered some of the unbleached hair that I accidentally included in the dye coverage, some of which also still had direct dye still staining it. You cannot tell the difference between bleached, unbleached, and any remaining direct dye stained areas (some bleached parts still had it too). It's all covered, and looks the same, but without looking flat… it has dimension to it, like hair should have. So, it doesn't look like a flat matte lifeless solid wig of pinkish hair… it just looks like… (fuchsia/plum) hair! 🙂 Now, although this colour is a level 9, so you would think it is a light colour… it is not. The end result (bleached or unbleached) is around a 6 or 7 level (same as my normal level), indoors it does appear slightly darker, too (maybe a 5 or 6 level). This could be due to how porous my hair is, but having seen pictures of others who have used it, I think it just is that dark due to being very pigmented. But! That *is* what I wanted! The colour is glorious! The -98 part of the number system indicates violet red. 9 = violet, 8 = red. So if you are looking at other Igora colours, keep that in mind. An -88 will be a red red, a -99 will be a violet violet, etc. The order does matter, as the first number is dominant, the second is to shift it. So an -89 would be redder, and the -98 is more purple. The end result is a wonderful medium/bright fuchsia/magenta (pink!!) in sunlight, and indoors looks more medium/dark plum/wine. It glows and shines and is sovery soft! Because it doesn't just coat the hair on the outside, it doesn't leave any weight or feeling of having something coating your hair (I don't use styling products, so that's sort of a big deal to me)… and no funky coloured fingernails! And the shine! It isn't just vibrant – it shines! It doesn't leave the hair dull looking at all. My natural virgin healthy hair looks dull in comparison (seriously, I am contemplating actually getting some of this line in a shade to match my own hair colour, just for the shine factor). If you like a deep purple/pink colour, I highly recommend this colour (and if you don't change colours every two weeks or something, that is). If you have naturally darker hair than a level 5 or 6, I don't know what will happen for you (I used a 20 developer, so a 30 may give better results for darker hair), but if you have 6 or lighter, it should come out as a deep berry/wine/plum (the red/pink hue is still present, just muted) indoors and deep bright magenta/fuchsia outdoors. If you want to add a little pizzaz to a brown dye, just to kick it up a notch, I'd also say this would do the trick, if you add just a bit in with your brown dye and developer. The Igora line also offers some "fun fashion" colours, most of which are in the pastel family. I would say this could be added to those to achieve a lighter colour of pink, or to punch any of those up a few notches as well. I do not know about mixing it with any other brand of dye, or what that would do to the end result, so I will not comment on that other than to say "proceed with caution" if you choose to do that. I cannot, as yet, make any claims about the fade factor or how long it will last. But, other reviews of this line say it lasts and lasts with little fading, even the reds. So, I have high hopes, and even if it does fade, I expect it to be slower than any direct dye (and hopefully more evenly). I wish I had used the Igora developer (contains oil), because if it came out this soft and lovely to the touch (over fried bleach hair!) with cheap no-name developer (it's what I had on hand from my daughter)… I can only imagine how much better it would have been with the higher quality stuff. To keep it a buck, I did not want the color that Magenta and Red mixed together created. I wanted more of a burgundy color and what I got was something that looks like…sangria. I asked a professional if I were to do the color from a box, if it would create the color I wanted even though I had naturally dark brown, resembling black hair. She said, “YES! Trust me!” And so, I decided to and ended up not getting the color I wanted, 😅. However, there are some pros! -The color is super vibrant. -My hair is not as dry as I thought it’d be. It’s my first time coloring my hair and I thought my hair would be brittle, but it actually felt moisturized after the completion of dying my hair. -I didn’t use bleach and the color still came out very pigmented. You don’t always need bleach, y’all. -My curl pattern hasn’t changed at all and you could see the definition far more now that my hair is red! Overall, this hair dye was pretty good. I wanted to try the Creme of Nature or even Dark and Lovely hair brands due to less harmful chemicals, but my curls still look very healthy and shiny. I’ve currently had the hair dye for a week and the color hasn’t faded at all when I’ve washed my hair at least 3 times. Although this wasn’t the color I wanted, I am warming up to it as it does compliment my skin tone AND I have had strangers stop me and compliment how much they love the color. I would recommend this to a friend, especially a dark haired friend who wants a vibrant color without having to use bleach! Below are two photos of my hair color. I use two tubes to color my hair because I have a lot of hair and is kind of long, and yes guys I cut off my hair too is not that long as it was but is not too short too. [brand:loreal-excellence-hair-color] is a tool in my hairdressing toolbox! This is the first color that I have used that will lift dark hair color more than a couple shades. Their entire line is meant for this purpose and this purpose only. You do use 40 volume which leaves the hair in a not so healthy condition. But luckily with the help of [brand:olaplex]  This is a thing of the past. They don’t have a huge Selection to choose from but what they do have rocks. I have used the magenta and red hot Together for an amazing combination.amanda.c

In order for me to achieve black hair that doesn't turn green after the 1st wash,I would have to do a filler color first like a medium brown. I don't want to put all those chemicals on my hair. Plus I don't want black hair! I DID NOT USE THIS! I have used feria in the past though, I have used their bleaching kit and their auburn, red and black cherry shades. It is the only box dye I will use. It not only has an essential oil you add to it for a better smell but it also helps the hair feel softer and more hydrated as well as look shiny and healthy, well as healthy as dyed hair can look. For a box dye it's not bad. If I had gotten a color I approved of I totally would have used it! My daughter has medium golden brown hair and has been debating allowing me to use this on her. The box came with everything I needed for color application as well as after care. Instructions were easy enough to follow. There was enough color to fully saturate my hair. I started with light brown hair and it got it to a dark vibrant black. Washed as instructed and used after care products and my hair did not feel damaged. I have washed it probably close to 10 time and there is minimal fade. Definitely recommend if you are wanting to box dye your hair.wynona.l

Dear L'Oreal, I've been using L'Oreal Excellence hair color 7R Red Penny for many years. Everywhere I go I am complimented on my amazing hair color – the beautiful color, the shine and softness. Imagine my disappointment when I found out that my color was discontinued! I, too, have tried 6R and the color was bland in comparison. I have now been forced to try other brands to try to duplicate the look of 7R, but to no avail. Please, please, please bring Excellence Cream 7R Red Penny back! People (strangers!) have even stopped me in the middle of stores to ask me if my hair color is natural (because it looks so natural) and if not, what product and color I use. I have recommended your product, in particular 7R, to dozens of people! Again, please bring 7R Red Penny back! I want the same amazing hair color with its softness and shine, and I also want to continue to recommend your product to those who stop to compliment my beautiful red hair!bleaurose

I used the 5AB color because I wanted to cover my brassy lifted hair and go maybe a shade darker. Make sure you use 10 volume developer not the one they give you if you’re just going darker. If you use the one they give, it will be harsh and lift your hair and you risk having even more red or orange in your hair. I have a really thick head of hair but only ended up using half a bottle since my hair is short. It feels pretty soft and I didn’t lose much hair rinsing it out. We’ll see how it wears! I’m not quite sure what people are doing wrong, but I have used this product for years if not decades to cover up grays. I have black/brown hair with bright white grays and I use the dark brown color. The color lasts for two months . I have no problem with matching- because the color always “reveals” itself at two weeks- which is normal for all box dye in my experience. I love everything about this kit. I purchase extra gloves nitrile, hair dye brushes, cheap butterfly clips and disposable shower caps. I do it on a day where my hair is greasy because I’m about to take a shower (this protects my scalp from the color and my hair from damage). I mix the color and developer together and let it sit while I rub the pretreatment in with my gloved hands. I shake up the color a lot (60 seconds!) and after I see actual color develop I shake it some more and then start applying. I apply to the top of my hair, brushing it in and then I clip that section off. I work in sections, top, sides and back and then let the dye work for 40 minutes from when I finish applying- cover it with a disposable cap so I don’t drip dye everywhere. I use all of the bottle for my shoulder length hair. This is key!!!! You need to let the part of your hair that is seen the most sit for the entire time. I rinse it out with cold water only (gloves!!!) and then add the conditioner (the whole tube) and let it set in my hair for 5 minutes (also in a cap) before rinsing it out with cold water and washing it with color safe shampoo in cold water. I do not apply this with a comb. There is a comb attachment- but I use a brush to spread it on my hair and the comb attachment to spread it on the brush. You want to paint your hair, soaking it with dye. The other trick is that when I shower, I condition first before I shampoo. This keeps the color in more and I get an incredible volume without my hair getting crunchy.tiziny

I personally think this dye is great, but I can think of another brand that has more staying power and is cheaper, so for that reason I can only give this 4 stars. The tone of this pink is unique to pinks I have bought previously and I think that's great when wanting some dimension! The texture is hard to describe but not its really creamy or gel like. And I think it smells like peppercorn, which doesn't bother me. I find a tube of this goes a really long way too, which is fantastic! The staying power is pretty average for your vivid pinks. Its rare for them to last too long. But I touch mine up every few washes around the roots and let the rest fade to a pastel, so its no big deal.dominique.f

I recently tried this product for the first time and I think it’s now one of my favorites! I’ve gotten TONS of compliments since I used Blue Ruin and I’ve used them all, over the years. Warning: stuff is Pravana Vivids level of stainage. RIP to a couple of ratty old towels, lol. My hair is between a level 2-3 with grays and I bleach and then highlight it to level 7-8. Pro tip is that I mix this product with a little conditioner and Olaplex 3 and then leave it in my hair for 2 hours. It really saves it from being fried. I have a feeling I’ll be using that combo for a while.lisa.b

I tried to manage my expectations a little with this product, as it’s recommended for light blonde or pre-lightened hair but mine was a balayage with dark blonde/light brown. Turns out it defied my expectations and still came out as a super vibrant red! My hair is chest length and the tube had just about enough to cover nearly my whole head (my roots are dark so I avoided those) with a small amount of conditioner mixed in to stretch it a bit further. I’m now on wash 3 or 4 and I’m surprised by how much colour is still in my hair! The vibrancy has been toned down but it’s definitely still red and I expect it will be for a while yet.Nicole

Best bleach I’ve used for hair. Comes with a 35 vol developer and enough bleach for a root touch up A whole head I’d recommend buying the full size bottles! Lifts my dark brown hair into a blonde and I never get stuck in an orange phase like other bleaches which makes me usually have to do the process twice. Love this hair color, definitely not dull. You get so many different highlights yet a solid color. It doesn't damage my hair as others have. I've learned to stick with loreal when it comes to home color. I use a blonde color and I have some red in my hair, this brings it down to almost what the box shows. Always use lighter color than you actually want. I had one trial color the second was absolutely what I wanted.cheri.m
