Best Home Highlighting Kit For Blondes (2024 Update)

I received this product and was eager to trial it. There’s nothing quite like a colour touch up to make you feel a little more refreshed and energised! The product was super easy to use and everything needed was contained in one compact box. I followed the directions with ease and all progressed to plan. The end result was reasonably true to the desired colour although my hair did end up more orange than I had anticipated. I accept this can happen with hair colours because there are so many factors that contribute to the end result. The hair colour did address my primary concern – covering the dreaded greys! The smell was not offensive as can happen with some brands and I liked the fuss free application process. A major benefit is the convenience of doing this at home at a time that suits me and a cost that is budget friendly! I have had my colour now for a week and the colour at this stage is still looking fresh with great coverage. I would suggest that anyone with thick hair or very long hair should invest in two packets and not chance a dye disaster!! I have long hair but it is very thin so one packet for me was sufficient. I received this hair dye to trial as part of the Beauty Review Crew. I have used this brand of hair dye a few times over the past couple years. In particular, I have used the shade 'Darkest brown' which is the same shade I'm trialing today. The shade has always been is a lovely vibrant colour and the colour result is similar to my natural hair colour. The dye promises to 100% grey hair coverage and it lives up to its promise. Preparing the dye for application is nice and easy. After applying the gloves that are included in the packaging, you pour the colour formula into the bottle of developer before placing the lid back on and shaking the bottle until completely mixed. It's that easy! Then starting at the roots, you evenly apply the dye. The dye goes on smoothly and, surprisingly, the dye scent isn't as strong as other brands. Other brands tend to have a strong chemical smell which makes my eyes water and nose tingle when breathing it in. Clairol have done a great job at producing a hair product with a low scent. One of the best things about Clairol's nice n' easy hair dyes is the short processing times. Unlike other brands that have a processing time of upwards to an hour to reach your desired shade, these dye have an average processing time of just 25 minutes. The short processing time means you can dye your hair during your lunch break, before a night out, or before a date, without it taking up too much of your time. The rinsing process is also quite a smooth and easy process. After applying some warm water, give your hear/head a little massage and then rinse until the water runs clear from all the dye. It normally takes around two minutes for the water to run clear. Then using the conditioning Clairol conditioning treatment that comes with the hair dye, you apply from roots to tips and leave for a couple minutes before rinsing. The conditioning treatment has a lovely scent and is nice and thick. It's almost like applying a luxurious hair mask. It glides onto the hair smoothly and evenly. After rinsing the conditioning treatment you can instantly feel how hydrated you hair feels. Dying your hair often dehydrates it and your hair can feel a little worse for wear. Clairol's hair dyes are gentle on your hair and the conditioning treatment prevents damage and keeps your hair hydrated and feeling lovely. After towel-drying my hair, I blow-dried my hair until was dry. Looking in the mirror you could instantly see how vibrant and lovely the hair colour result was, and it looked and felt really healthy. I am always so very impressed with the results every time and I often get compliments from friends and family members. As my hair grows fairly quickly, I use this product every 2-3 months to help cover grey hairs. Despite dying my hair so regularly, my hair has remained healthy and manageable, and hasn't compromised my hair in any way. The only downside I can mention is that the dye stains your skin. Normally hair spray or acetone on a cotton ball or cotton pad helps remove hair dyes from skin but I found this dye to be lot stronger and barely budged from the skin. I also tried scrubbing with soap and dishwashing detergent but the dye only faded slightly. It took a few days of scubbing before the dye faded completely. The best thing of all about Clairol's Nice n' Easy hair dyes are they cost just $9 from your local supermarket. Sometimes, you can grab them on special for just $6! SIX BUCKS! Staff Review by BC's Tamara I'm not going to lie – I have greys. Lots of them. But the Clairol Nice'n Easy Permanent Hair Dye did a mighty fine job of making them disappear! I have actually used this dye in the past, and can't recommend it enough. The range of colours on offer is wonderful as there is something there for everyone. I have dull brown hair, so usually opt for a warm shade to brighten my colour – I used the Medium Chestnut Brown 5RB. The instructions are clear and easy to follow and after spending 10 mins applying the product as thoroughly as I could, it took a simple 25 minutes to penetrate before washing it out and conditioning. The colour completely covered my greys (which was my main objective), but overall my hair looks so much healthier as it is shiny and the colour has more life to it. My favourite thing about this dye is that the colour brings out the natural highlights I have and it looks really natural. never ever ever buy this product. I have been highlighting my own hair for 20 years. I have never ever used this brand, but my normal brand was out of stock everywhere. the cap is ridiculous because you can't see any of the holes or circles or anything on it. then once you do find a hole you can't punch through it. I've never really enjoyed coloring my own hair, but I do it out of necessity for saving money. but I've never hated it this much. if you like your sanity do not buy this product. I would give it zero Stars if I could.Taren

I cannot say enough good things about this product. I have been doing my own highlights for years and normally use the one intended for long hair. However, when I need to do touchups, this is my go-to. The color matches the long hair package. I have very dark brown (almost black) hair, and this works great over that. It doesn't fade to orange, or turn into an ugly color. If it does turn brassy over time, a simple purple shampoo can help to balance it out again. I don't use the cap and hook that come in the box. Instead, I use 2 highlighting combs, foils, a highlighting board, and a tinting brush. This method works great for this product, and gives closer to a salon result. I will definitely be using this product in the future.Amy

This was my first attempt at doing my own permanent haircolor. Ambitious, yes, but it went perfectly! Took a couple practice trys getting the hair to come through the cap nicely, and that ended up being the hardest most time consuming part. Having someone to help would've made that a lot easier. I just did crown highlights and it gave nice small strands of color all over. A helper would be a must if you're going to do all over highlights (unless you feel like sitting with a plastic cap on your head for 4 hours). I have light golden brown hair, and in 25 mins it was done. Only drawback is the smell of the leave-in toner which is the last step 😛 So many haircolors (Feria) are nice smelling, why couldn't Loreal do this? Especially on a leave-in product. Oh, and when you mix everything you get this huge tub of haircolor about 1.5×1.5×4 or 5 inches. I barely made a dent in it and I have hair about 2in past my shoulders.. Maybe if you're doing this with your sister or something you could rinse re-use the cap. You'd definantly have enough dye.monica.c

I really liked this kit, I've done two so far, my hair is a light brown/very dark blonde to start. I started with the H65 caramel , and the second time did the H85 champagne. Both gave good results. It does take a long time to pull the hair through the cap, especially if you do every hole, and it really helps to have someone to do the back for you. My husband did my whole head and it took us about 2 hours , and he did it pretty quick. I really like that you know you're getting 35v developer, and not just something random. Also like the leave in toner, seemed to really help take out any hint of brass. I know its not as perfect as getting it done at the salon, but I think its as close as can be, for 10 dollars you really can't beat it.Vicki

This highlighting kit is great for "virgin" hair, but if you already have highlights, I would not recommend it. I had significantly grown out roots, and didn't want to pay the price at a salon, so I attempted to do my own using this kit. The highlights ended up brassy and orange towards my roots, and certain parts of my hair turned yellow. The cap didn't allow my hair to be pulled through enough to get close to the root, and it doesn't allow you to put many near the root line, so I ended up with streaky, chunky blocks of hair–not highlights, at all. You will also definitely need someone to help you pull the hair through when you get to the back of your head. It's darn near impossible to see where to pull the hair through on your own, and I even made sharpie marks on the holes, like someone suggested a few comments back. The plastic tool that it comes with bent after maybe 10 holes, so that was a waste. Toner is supposed to help with yellow and orange brassy hair, and the toner did nothing for my hair. It's awful how expensive highlights are in a salon, but do yourself a favor and take the $11 that this costs and save it towards going to a salon. That's where I ended up anyway, so I wish I had this advice before I shelled out more money.kima124

I have used Loreals Frost design highlighting kits for quite a few years now. Its most definitely my go-to at home kit. I will say that when you choose to highlight/bleach your hair at home with a pull through cap, its a long LONG process especially if you have long hair like I do. Depending on how much of your hair you want lightend, and if you want some in the back/bottom you may need help from a friend (or in my case my fiance is actually always eager to help me, he's gotten used to it is really good at it!) Almost every time I use this kit I always end up having to leave the dye in my hair a bit longer than it suggests in the instructions. Normally if it takes too long I will get out the hair dryer blow hot air on my hair to help speed up the process. One thing that took me a long time to figure out was when I washed the dye out of my hair with the cap still on, it would hurt SO bad to take the cap off because bleach damages your hair and its wet knotted up. So, I take the conditioner included in the kit and let it sit on the highlighted hair as directed, wash out the cap glides right off, pain free! I really like that this kit comes with a toner as well in case your hair ends up too brassy/orange. I have never purchased a drugstore highlighting kit before that includes a toner. I always end up with nice cool colored highlights, and people always ask where I had my highlights done I tell them at home!!! Obviously when it comes to highlighting dyeing your own hair at home you risk it turning out a totally different color then what you wanted. Its actually something that always ends up happening to me EXCEPT when I use THIS kit. Every time I've bought used Loreals Frost Design highlighting kit my hair always turns out perfect!!alisha.s

I decided to try this product. I have black hair, which I have dyed with black hair dye to cover grays. I knew that this will lighten my hair and pull out the red. Now it's too brassy. What color can I put on this to tone it down? Blue conditioner? I was hoping for a milky brown color as the end result.Selly

I have medium brunette hair and this kit turned my hair orange. It says that people with brunette to black hair can use this product. I have used many highlighting kits by L’Oréal and had wonderful honey blonde highlighting results. I also regularly color my roots with L’Oréal, so I am not new to coloring. I bought this kit by Clairol on sale and what a mistake that was. I will only use L’Oréal from now on. Do not recommend.Stefanie

Love It. I've now used this 3 times. The first at the tips, the second up on the mids and the third was to add highlights. I used a highlighting cap and use blue conditioner every few weeks. It did not damage my hair in the slightest. I got a lot of compliments. I have natural dark brown hair and it came out an ashy/caramel color and not the slightest bit orange. I will mention that my hair was 100% virgin. There was no color on my hair when I used this…that may affect the results.Kristen

Lol 🤣 I'm not an expert at doing highlights at home. 99 percent of the time I go to the salon to get this done. With this it worked ok because I used the cap LoL 🤣. But it's been a minute. Having naturally very dark hair, when I lighten my hair at home, it can appear brassy or orange, however, this kit lifts my very dark hair to blonde, without any brassiness. It has been a long time since I had done a cap highlight on myself but I was open to switching up my hair color and trying out Revlon’s Color Effects Frost Glow. I used the smaller hook end of the tool because I wanted a subtle highlight. It took a few tries before I got the method down for pulling the hair through the cap. I think it is really important to keep the tool flat to your head with the hook pointed up, to get the best results without pulling at your hair. Because I didn’t want a dramatic change, I planned to only pulled hair through the circled holes and only in the front and crown portions of the cap. I found it much too difficult to pull hair from any farther back on my head, so there was no chance I was going to be able to accomplish an all-over highlight, even if I wanted to. I would recommend having someone help you pull hair through the cap if you are going for a full head of highlights and definitely if you are new to cap highlights. The mixing and coloring process was super easy. The mixture did not smell harsh which was definitely appreciated. I would prefer a better fitting pair of gloves to wear. As you apply the mixture and make sure each strand is saturated, the gloves start to slide off and get in the way. I intended to check my hair after 10 minutes but my timer never went off, so it was 15 minutes before I checked. When I checked it, I panicked because it looked very blonde and brassy compared to my chocolate cherry brown hair color. After rinsing it off and shampooing and conditioning with the included toning shampoo and conditioner, I felt a little bit better about the color. It still looked very light (mostly in front) when I started to dry my hair with my Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer. After styling, other than looking a little more 2000’s chunky highlight at the front of my face than I would have liked, I am very happy with the look! I was actually pleasantly surprised that the color chart on the box was accurate! It would be nice to get a bigger packet of the toning conditioner and shampoo. I have shoulder-length fine hair and used the whole packet. Even putting two of each packet would be beneficial especially to those with long or thick hair. I could possibly see myself using this kit in the future, though I would probably force my husband to help pull hair through the cap. From hook to styling, the whole process took me about 3 1/2 hours. It gets a little chaotic trying to hold a mirror and angle yourself just right to reach all of the holes on the cap. If you’re looking to save yourself a hundred (or more) dollars and you have the time and patience, I would definitely recommend this Revlon Color Effects kit!devon.g

Do you ever get tired of dropping $250+ at the salon for highlights? Especially when your hair grows super fast like mine and you have to go often? I’ll be honest, at 13, I had a very bad experience with box dye (haven’t we all?) and swore off it ever since. Well, with very limited skills and a bit more confidence, I gave this box a try. I figured, “it’s summer. If it goes bad there is always the sun.” To my surprise, It didn’t go bad at all, not even close! I actually have some bomb, salon style highlights! I love that this kit comes with a cap and hook. It took a few tries, but once I got the hang of hooking and pulling the hair through I actually found it quite fun and relaxing. The cap goes on nice and tight and will muffle your hearing while it’s on, so I totally suggest doing this when everyone is in bed and you don’t need to really hear anything for a while. The cap is magical because it really does an amazing job at protecting the rest of your hair. There is literally no way to end up with bleach drips or leopard spots on any other part of your hair. This kit is basically fool proof. I pulled my hair through every single hole of the cap. My husband helped me with the very back, as I didn’t want to miss any hair underneath because I wear my hair up often. He had no problems with the hook either. (Because my hair turned out so well, he now thinks he is a master colorist 🙄) My hair is VERY thick. I was worried that I wouldn’t have enough dye with just 1 box, but to my surprise I had just enough to coat every single strand. The color is very easy to mix. Just empty the contents of a powder packet into a bottle containing liquid and shake vigorously. I really appreciate that I didn’t have to worry about having color on too long in one spot and not long enough in others because it looks goes on at the same time, another reason why the cap is so great. I like the smell of hair bleach and always have. This has that smell, but it is very light and not overpowering. My roots were quite dark, so I left this on for 50 minutes checking every 5. I absolutely did NOT want my hair looking orange (hello flashbacks from teenage years!) I was a bit scared to remove the cap because I felt like it was going to pull my hair out at the roots, but it came off with no issues or hair loss. I really love the purple shampoo and conditioner that was provided in the box. It smelled wonderful and made it very easy to get all the product out. I do comb my conditioner through my hair and I did that with this. My hair didn’t feel dry, crisp or brittle at all. The conditioner had a very nice slip and hydrated very well. I’m incredibly pleased with the results overall. My hair has absolutely zero orange tones to it at all. There are so many baby highlights that my hair doesn’t look streaky, chunky or strange. The strands blend in so well giving my hair an overall natural look. My hair feels super soft and healthy too! I was worried it would get brittle because I left the dye on right up until the max time, but I haven’t had a single issue with my hair falling out, breaking or feeling fried. This kit changed my perception of box dye forever! It was so easy to use (you literally can’t mess this up!), made my hair look great and saved me a ton of money! I have always been a fan of Revlon and I have always utilized this product consistently for many years. I attempted to use the product today and was extremely disappointed that they changed the "hook" that is included in the box. It is not as referenced in the "included" items as it has been reconfigured to now be added on the end of the "mixer" versus as a separate item and seems to be cheaper plastic. It bent the very first time I tried it and only got more flexible after only 3 hair pulls (I have very short hair) and I realized it was not usable. I even tried to fix the hook and make my own "notch" several times with no success so unless you have your own "hook" this kit is not usable. It is extremely frustrating to plan to highlight my hair, get everything set up and then realize I can't use the kit due to changes in quality.Disappointed

I have dark brown hair and dye it a golden brown every 4 weeks, mainly due to greys. After noticing colour build up and the greys not holding the colour, I decided to go for highlights. I chose this because of the reviews and I pleased I did. The cap could be better. I had help from my partner who said that the layer of plastic underneath the cap made it difficult to pull the hair through. The instructions are easy to follow. All the tools are included, although I might purchase a better highlighting cap for next time. I left the product on for 90 minutes and I got multi-tonal blonde highlights. No orange or brassiness. My hair is a little dry afterwards but it is bleached so I use a conditioning treatment. I’m really pleased with the results. I bought this today just to touch up some dark patches of hair that my hairdresser missed when highlighting and that were really noticeable when I tied my hair back. Simple instructions, all the equipment you need, 30 mins and the pieces of hair I coated had gone from dark brown to a lovely light blonde. The cap you get is amazing quality and I’ve carefully cleaned everything so I can use again in future as you can buy their peroxide and colour separately! No ginger or weird colours. It really is fool proof. I was nervous to use despite the brilliant reviews but you can always just do a small underneath part to try first. You won’t regret it.LaurenC

Bought this kit after reading the good reviews. My partner did it for me, I personally think you need someone to do it for you to make sure you have even coverage, my hair is really fine and mousy brown, the dye was on for 15/20 mins. Excellent result really happy with it, I have had loads of compliments. Definitely buying it again. I did see it cheaper else where, but £6 is nothing compared to salon prices. As time has gone on the ends of my hair are a little dry, but dye does that an a little conditioner helps with that problem. All in all a great product.Helen B

I didn't approve or ask for this shade! I got starry black. I'm a natural blonde. In order for me to achieve black hair that doesn't turn green after the 1st wash,I would have to do a filler color first like a medium brown. I don't want to put all those chemicals on my hair. Plus I don't want black hair! I DID NOT USE THIS! I have used feria in the past though, I have used their bleaching kit and their auburn, red and black cherry shades. It is the only box dye I will use. It not only has an essential oil you add to it for a better smell but it also helps the hair feel softer and more hydrated as well as look shiny and healthy, well as healthy as dyed hair can look. For a box dye it's not bad. If I had gotten a color I approved of I totally would have used it! My daughter has medium golden brown hair and has been debating allowing me to use this on her. The box came with everything I needed for color application as well as after care. Instructions were easy enough to follow. There was enough color to fully saturate my hair. I started with light brown hair and it got it to a dark vibrant black. Washed as instructed and used after care products and my hair did not feel damaged. I HAD dark blonde hair. Spent a week looking at products and I wanted to be Blonde not bleach blonde just light blonde. I picked this kit because it does contain BLEACH. BLEACH is the only way to lift hair color. I left on for an hour and I look like an orange pop. The max time is an hour. I called the 18006317358 number that is on the box and they are closed today because of the holiday. So, for now I am stuck with orange hair or go to a salon and spend money, lots of it for a hair color correction. A company like this should have someone on call 24/7 if your going to have a help line and sell boxed color at stores that are open 24 hours. People do need help after hours and on holidays. I went to sally's and they said bleach it again. I am scared to bleach again so soon. So today I will wear a hat and conditioner and wait for them to open tomorrow , to maybe give me some advice on what to do with this orange hair. First, I was very SKETPICAL to use this product, because I have only ever used Ion hair color from Sally’s in Lightest Cool Blonde. I decided to give this a shot, because of the high level of ratings on this product online. I also googled and checked Amazon reviews and checked reviews on the manufacturer’s website. All had like 80% of reviewers critiquing it as high. So, I gave it a shot…. I was not disappointed at all! I am naturally dirty blond/dishwater blond and my hair lifts to platinum blond easily. This color did exactly that. It lifted evenly and gave me very, very platinum blond hair like the white, ethereal color that I was wanting. The instructions were very easy to follow. The box recommends anywhere from 10 to 40 minutes. I left mine on for 20 minutes and then checked it. It had completely lifted to platinum. My hair was yellow… THIS IS NORMAL though, because some people’s hair lifts to either yellow or orange when going so light. Go to Sally’s and get the WELLA TONER in T-14 “Palest Ash Blond” (another name is “White Lady”). I left this on for 5 minutes! BE CAREFUL not to live it on too long when it starts turning, RINSE IT OUT! This lifts that yellow or orange out of your hair and will literally make your hair look amazing!!!! This stuff includes a shampoo packet that I found to be great and it leaves your hair ridiculously soft!ksm2v

I have naturally dark brown hair which I had dyed to a dark auburn color months ago. My roots were already showing and the color I had it dyed to was fading. I wanted to bleach my hair blond and used this product. The first time my hair was orange and my roots turned out yellow. According to the research I did I had to bleach my hair again to get it to the yellow that I wanted. Well my mistake was that I used this product again. I thought it should work on the second attempt. And no, all it did was make my hair turn into an even brighter orange! I left it in my hair on both attempts for 45 minutes. Plus it had left my hair dried out. Needless to say I'll never use this again and recommend that you do not use this product. It will not make you blond. Instead it will turn you into a carrot top as you can see in the picture. This was taken after the second time I used it to bleach my hair. That was almost $20 down the drain. I bought this because I love the maybelline brand and was on the hunt for a new bronzer. The product is affordable and is sold at many drug stores. This kit is not my favorite and I most likely will not be buying again after comparing it to other bronzing kits. I use the lightest color for a highlight because it has a nice glow and shimmer and the third color as a bronzer. The darker shades have a shimmer to them and it is not very subtle. The more I used the palette I noticed the harder it was for my brush to pick up the product. Not sure if this was because of the product or the brush, but I am thinking it is because of the product.brittany.m

Beautiful highlights!! I use this palette every time I beat my face bc the colors are so pretty. The bronzers are good for sculpting cheekbones and forehead. The highlights shine so great and I always get compliments that my highlighter is popping 🙂 I definitely recommend the two light shades as a highlighter or even for some bright eyeshadow looks! I really liked how this turned out on my hair. My hair is already pretty dark but my roots grow in pretty fast so this was absolutely needed. It does not have a super strong chemical smell, and left my hair feeling soft: I have problems using color that often damages my curl pattern. This did not! This is my hair immediately after wash. For reference my hair is a medium to light brown with an ash undertone and some gray hairs. Midnight blue is really nice with an undertone of a blue tint but no actual blue to your hair. Jet black is very dark, sharp and glossy looking. Natural black still solid coverage but a softer tone to it. Chestnut brown has a golden almost auburn color to it. Red hot rhythms is stunning when first applied but quickly loses color in less than a week making your hair look very much like a box dye job. Golden blond is true golden warm tone but again you need a professional to lighten your hair first in order for the color to take all the way through your hair. I don't know who has their nose broken, but the conditioner smells absolutely fabulous. Reminds of a salon honestly. obviously when you're dying you need to have a fan going but even that's not a bad smell. Bottom line as with any color going darker than your hair tone is always easy and possible. And going lighter impossible without a bleach or toner to lighten it first before depositing color. I really liked this brand, it was new to me and this is how I feel about it. Now that I’ve went through the process of dying my hair and the color has now been in for a full day. First the packaging was very neat and you knew what you were working with. Once opened everything was in the box with easy to read instructions. I was super excited to see the dye bottle was a twist off top. Usually I have to cut the tip of the dye bottle in the boxes dye that I normally use. The dye mixed after a few hard shakes, but once I poured into my hair I could see that it didn’t mix all the way so had to give a bit more hard shakes to get it to fully mix. The liquid itself was runny, I like my hair dye a bit less runny. The smell of it was not too powering, and once on the head and scalp it did burn a bit while I sat to catch my hair. The washout was nice and not messy. A few rinses and it came out clear. The product came with a very nice sized conditioner, that has left my hair super soft. The conditioner had a very nice smell. It reminded me of tropical fruit. My hair still smells like it, and I work all day. All my hair caught the color and came out great. I would recommend trying this brand if you have it within reach. It has been a long time since I had done a cap highlight on myself but I was open to switching up my hair color and trying out Revlon’s Color Effects Frost Glow. I used the smaller hook end of the tool because I wanted a subtle highlight. It took a few tries before I got the method down for pulling the hair through the cap. I think it is really important to keep the tool flat to your head with the hook pointed up, to get the best results without pulling at your hair. Because I didn’t want a dramatic change, I planned to only pulled hair through the circled holes and only in the front and crown portions of the cap. I found it much too difficult to pull hair from any farther back on my head, so there was no chance I was going to be able to accomplish an all-over highlight, even if I wanted to. I would recommend having someone help you pull hair through the cap if you are going for a full head of highlights and definitely if you are new to cap highlights. The mixing and coloring process was super easy. The mixture did not smell harsh which was definitely appreciated. I would prefer a better fitting pair of gloves to wear. As you apply the mixture and make sure each strand is saturated, the gloves start to slide off and get in the way. I intended to check my hair after 10 minutes but my timer never went off, so it was 15 minutes before I checked. When I checked it, I panicked because it looked very blonde and brassy compared to my chocolate cherry brown hair color. After rinsing it off and shampooing and conditioning with the included toning shampoo and conditioner, I felt a little bit better about the color. It still looked very light (mostly in front) when I started to dry my hair with my Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer. After styling, other than looking a little more 2000’s chunky highlight at the front of my face than I would have liked, I am very happy with the look! I was actually pleasantly surprised that the color chart on the box was accurate! It would be nice to get a bigger packet of the toning conditioner and shampoo. I have shoulder-length fine hair and used the whole packet. Even putting two of each packet would be beneficial especially to those with long or thick hair. I could possibly see myself using this kit in the future, though I would probably force my husband to help pull hair through the cap. From hook to styling, the whole process took me about 3 1/2 hours. It gets a little chaotic trying to hold a mirror and angle yourself just right to reach all of the holes on the cap. If you’re looking to save yourself a hundred (or more) dollars and you have the time and patience, I would definitely recommend this Revlon Color Effects kit!devon.g

Do you ever get tired of dropping $250+ at the salon for highlights? Especially when your hair grows super fast like mine and you have to go often? I’ll be honest, at 13, I had a very bad experience with box dye (haven’t we all?) and swore off it ever since. Well, with very limited skills and a bit more confidence, I gave this box a try. I figured, “it’s summer. If it goes bad there is always the sun.” To my surprise, It didn’t go bad at all, not even close! I actually have some bomb, salon style highlights! I love that this kit comes with a cap and hook. It took a few tries, but once I got the hang of hooking and pulling the hair through I actually found it quite fun and relaxing. The cap goes on nice and tight and will muffle your hearing while it’s on, so I totally suggest doing this when everyone is in bed and you don’t need to really hear anything for a while. The cap is magical because it really does an amazing job at protecting the rest of your hair. There is literally no way to end up with bleach drips or leopard spots on any other part of your hair. This kit is basically fool proof. I pulled my hair through every single hole of the cap. My husband helped me with the very back, as I didn’t want to miss any hair underneath because I wear my hair up often. He had no problems with the hook either. (Because my hair turned out so well, he now thinks he is a master colorist 🙄) My hair is VERY thick. I was worried that I wouldn’t have enough dye with just 1 box, but to my surprise I had just enough to coat every single strand. The color is very easy to mix. Just empty the contents of a powder packet into a bottle containing liquid and shake vigorously. I really appreciate that I didn’t have to worry about having color on too long in one spot and not long enough in others because it looks goes on at the same time, another reason why the cap is so great. I like the smell of hair bleach and always have. This has that smell, but it is very light and not overpowering. My roots were quite dark, so I left this on for 50 minutes checking every 5. I absolutely did NOT want my hair looking orange (hello flashbacks from teenage years!) I was a bit scared to remove the cap because I felt like it was going to pull my hair out at the roots, but it came off with no issues or hair loss. I really love the purple shampoo and conditioner that was provided in the box. It smelled wonderful and made it very easy to get all the product out. I do comb my conditioner through my hair and I did that with this. My hair didn’t feel dry, crisp or brittle at all. The conditioner had a very nice slip and hydrated very well. I’m incredibly pleased with the results overall. My hair has absolutely zero orange tones to it at all. There are so many baby highlights that my hair doesn’t look streaky, chunky or strange. The strands blend in so well giving my hair an overall natural look. My hair feels super soft and healthy too! I was worried it would get brittle because I left the dye on right up until the max time, but I haven’t had a single issue with my hair falling out, breaking or feeling fried. This kit changed my perception of box dye forever! It was so easy to use (you literally can’t mess this up!), made my hair look great and saved me a ton of money! I have always been a fan of Revlon and I have always utilized this product consistently for many years. I attempted to use the product today and was extremely disappointed that they changed the "hook" that is included in the box. It is not as referenced in the "included" items as it has been reconfigured to now be added on the end of the "mixer" versus as a separate item and seems to be cheaper plastic. It bent the very first time I tried it and only got more flexible after only 3 hair pulls (I have very short hair) and I realized it was not usable. I even tried to fix the hook and make my own "notch" several times with no success so unless you have your own "hook" this kit is not usable. It is extremely frustrating to plan to highlight my hair, get everything set up and then realize I can't use the kit due to changes in quality.Disappointed

I don't know why I never learn from my past mistakes but this is the third time I've used this bleach and it will definitely be the last time. I spent about two years leaving my hair alone to grow our naturally and didn't bother to color it. This bleach was the only one I could find in the store at the time and this just didn't do anything for me. It smells awful, there isn't enough for a full head, and the anti brass purple conditioner is a genuine joke. I'm going to try something else to bleach my hair this week but I'm hoping this review will save people from making the same mistake I did. Just don't do it. Find something else. The instructions are clear and I am very appreciative on being able to have everything needed for the incredible price. This kit is dummy-proof. I had no experience in dying my hair prior to using this kit and I achieved the look I was going for. My hair is dark brown and there was no previous bleach or dye in it. I used the sectioned ponytail method and I did not tease the hair. I wrapped each ponytail in foil after fully saturating each one. I left the product on for the full 45 minutes and did check for color lift/change at 30 minutes. I used the included comb to apply the product as well as the conditioner. I have medium short hair, but I have an undercut so one bottle was enough for me. If I had a full head of hair and longer, I would probably have needed another bottle.DIYmumprof

What a mess. The black ink smears all over the bottle when you are mixing/processing/applying to you hair. Gloves are a must! It dried out my hair so I’m pretty sad. I had been using another product prior to color my hair but I wanted to try a new one and it dried out my hair & some hair was/is light orange and the rest white blonde. So terrible! I’ve been doing my own hair for 15 yrs so I know what I’m doing. When you shake the product and remove the lid it explodes all over. Went all over my bathroom wall & porcelain sink. Thin product. It was worth a try but I won’t use it again. I bought four boxes. I’d ask for a refund if I could. It is affordable just not for me. I’m going back to L’Oréal Paris 205 lightener. It was a fantastic product everything was neat and well instructed. I really loved the results in the end. It wasn’t messy our hard to do so that really helps. I also feel it did not damage my hair as much as the bleaching process does.member-f1414

I do like this product for in between visits to the. Salon or if I wanna add a little more at home. I like that it has a thick formula so it doesn’t get all over the place. I like that it comes with a 30vol developer. I do use it very sparingly on my crown or around my face. I do not keep one certain part so when I feel an area needs a touch up after I get home or before I’m ready to go for a full highlight. If you don’t let it process all the way your hair can be orange so you have to know what to look for. That’s why I keep it really simple and thin pieces when I do this.kimmy.k

I absolutely love L’Oréal highlight kits! They have such a great value behind them. In my opinion they are by far the best highlight kits on the market. Inexpensive and high quality products. Easy to use. I have been using for years and I highly recommend. The only downfall is I wish they were more readily available for purchase. Especially online.jen.b

I have natural medium/dirty blonde hair, that is 2c/3a curly. I have never used any dye, professional or otherwise on my hair. I use the Sun Bum hair lightener when I am outside in the sun and it has brought my hair to the light blonde color I want. My hair has a natural golden undertone so I have used the purple Sun Bum tone enhancer and it has helped give a more neutral blonde tone to my hair. The hair lightener has not made my hair brittle or dry, but keep in mind I do use several hydrating treatments on my natural curly dry hair anyways. Be cautious and evaluate your hair type when making product decisions, but I will continue to use this product and give it 5 stars!Haley

I have dark brown hair, and I know it isn't made for that, but I wanted to try this spray on certain strands of hair to get some subtle highlights, and it works!! I sprayed this on random strands of hair and sat out in the sun to let it work, and after like 3-4 sessions of doing that, you can really tell a difference! I did make sure to leave several days between lightening sessions and made sure to deep condition my hair after every use since it can be a bit drying. I'm really happy with the results, it looks like I went to the salon and got highlights! I also can't really speak to the brassy tones that other reviewers have experienced because my hair has always been kinda dark Auburn-ish, so of course when lightened it looks more like a dark strawberry blonde. However, if you are in the same boat and that would bother you, I'm sure some purple shampoo would do the trick. This product is definitely worth a try and is way cheaper than getting your hair colored at the salon!K

I absolutely LOVE this product and would recommend it to anyone that has blonde/light brown hair. This stuff smells amazing, makes my hair feel so nice and soft, and actually does help make my hair more blonde in the sun! I have never dyed my hair before other than with natural highlights from the sun! In the winter my hair starts to get darker, when spring rolls around I start using this product in my hair whenever I am going to be outside and I am always impressed at how quickly I can start telling the difference. I received this product and was eager to trial it. There’s nothing quite like a colour touch up to make you feel a little more refreshed and energised! The product was super easy to use and everything needed was contained in one compact box. I followed the directions with ease and all progressed to plan. The end result was reasonably true to the desired colour although my hair did end up more orange than I had anticipated. I accept this can happen with hair colours because there are so many factors that contribute to the end result. The hair colour did address my primary concern – covering the dreaded greys! The smell was not offensive as can happen with some brands and I liked the fuss free application process. A major benefit is the convenience of doing this at home at a time that suits me and a cost that is budget friendly! I have had my colour now for a week and the colour at this stage is still looking fresh with great coverage. I would suggest that anyone with thick hair or very long hair should invest in two packets and not chance a dye disaster!! I have long hair but it is very thin so one packet for me was sufficient. I received this hair dye to trial as part of the Beauty Review Crew. I have used this brand of hair dye a few times over the past couple years. In particular, I have used the shade 'Darkest brown' which is the same shade I'm trialing today. The shade has always been is a lovely vibrant colour and the colour result is similar to my natural hair colour. The dye promises to 100% grey hair coverage and it lives up to its promise. Preparing the dye for application is nice and easy. After applying the gloves that are included in the packaging, you pour the colour formula into the bottle of developer before placing the lid back on and shaking the bottle until completely mixed. It's that easy! Then starting at the roots, you evenly apply the dye. The dye goes on smoothly and, surprisingly, the dye scent isn't as strong as other brands. Other brands tend to have a strong chemical smell which makes my eyes water and nose tingle when breathing it in. Clairol have done a great job at producing a hair product with a low scent. One of the best things about Clairol's nice n' easy hair dyes is the short processing times. Unlike other brands that have a processing time of upwards to an hour to reach your desired shade, these dye have an average processing time of just 25 minutes. The short processing time means you can dye your hair during your lunch break, before a night out, or before a date, without it taking up too much of your time. The rinsing process is also quite a smooth and easy process. After applying some warm water, give your hear/head a little massage and then rinse until the water runs clear from all the dye. It normally takes around two minutes for the water to run clear. Then using the conditioning Clairol conditioning treatment that comes with the hair dye, you apply from roots to tips and leave for a couple minutes before rinsing. The conditioning treatment has a lovely scent and is nice and thick. It's almost like applying a luxurious hair mask. It glides onto the hair smoothly and evenly. After rinsing the conditioning treatment you can instantly feel how hydrated you hair feels. Dying your hair often dehydrates it and your hair can feel a little worse for wear. Clairol's hair dyes are gentle on your hair and the conditioning treatment prevents damage and keeps your hair hydrated and feeling lovely. After towel-drying my hair, I blow-dried my hair until was dry. Looking in the mirror you could instantly see how vibrant and lovely the hair colour result was, and it looked and felt really healthy. I am always so very impressed with the results every time and I often get compliments from friends and family members. As my hair grows fairly quickly, I use this product every 2-3 months to help cover grey hairs. Despite dying my hair so regularly, my hair has remained healthy and manageable, and hasn't compromised my hair in any way. The only downside I can mention is that the dye stains your skin. Normally hair spray or acetone on a cotton ball or cotton pad helps remove hair dyes from skin but I found this dye to be lot stronger and barely budged from the skin. I also tried scrubbing with soap and dishwashing detergent but the dye only faded slightly. It took a few days of scubbing before the dye faded completely. The best thing of all about Clairol's Nice n' Easy hair dyes are they cost just $9 from your local supermarket. Sometimes, you can grab them on special for just $6! SIX BUCKS! Staff Review by BC's Tamara I'm not going to lie – I have greys. Lots of them. But the Clairol Nice'n Easy Permanent Hair Dye did a mighty fine job of making them disappear! I have actually used this dye in the past, and can't recommend it enough. The range of colours on offer is wonderful as there is something there for everyone. I have dull brown hair, so usually opt for a warm shade to brighten my colour – I used the Medium Chestnut Brown 5RB. The instructions are clear and easy to follow and after spending 10 mins applying the product as thoroughly as I could, it took a simple 25 minutes to penetrate before washing it out and conditioning. The colour completely covered my greys (which was my main objective), but overall my hair looks so much healthier as it is shiny and the colour has more life to it. My favourite thing about this dye is that the colour brings out the natural highlights I have and it looks really natural. This is by far the best Bleaching kit that I have found. It dramatically lightened my dark blonde tresses to a Bombshell Platinum shade. Very easy to use and it came with complete instructions on step by step easy to read and understand instructions. It lifted my shade atleast 6 shades. I am a huge fan of Jerome Russell products and I will definitely be purchasing this product again. I highly recommend that if you want to achieve a high lift of blonde, then this is the product that you want.becky.h

Came with 40 Developer and two bags of bleach and a brush. was disappointed there was no mixing dish or conditioner . However there was a cap and gloves and hair cap. Worked better than most I've tried. as it left my hair very soft and not dry damaged . I use a little and touch up later. making this box last awhile.christy

I used to use this in the darker shade years ago before it stopped being available in the UK so I was excited about trying it again for my lockdown root issues. It was a bit daunting how dark the all-over colour made my hair, covering up my roots and previous highlights. But it was actually very close to my natural, dark ash blond hair colour. I followed the instructions and let that dry fully before patiently taking small sections of my hair from each side and rubbing the blue, highlighting paste in well. I am delighted with the results, although I have had to use a violet hair treatment to stop brassiness. I have included some photos. I took AGES, mixing the paste really well and taking thinner and thicker sections in the areas the instructions suggested for framing my face and I reckon that patience paid off. I followed the instructions exactly as written and I even put the anti brass conditioner for 7 mins instead of 5. But my highlights all came out orangey instead of blonde. The base color was so strong that it hurt my scalp even after 2 days! Terrible mistake of trying this highlight and color product and I have to suffer with this terrible brassy orangey color for another week before I go to the salon as my scalp is still hurting from the base color ( my highlights was 1/4 inch away from roots so I am sure it was the base color that was too strong ) worst part is that my gray is still visible ! Though I normally use John Frieda Foam haircolor to due my hair, I like to have some highlights in Summer. I used to lay $06 the salon to get Caramel highlights out into my Auburn red hair and the result was gorgeous. Paying salon prices was my last resort after trying a few at home highlighting kits which were all disastrous. This is the first one to come out that gives me the same quality results as paying outrageous salon prices. And I actually love the base color of the permanent hair due more than the cold I get from John Frieda. Anyway once I dye my whole head with the base color. I wait until the following day or 2 to do the highlights. This kit comes with Praline highlights which looks almost exactly like the Caramel ones I loved so much against the red. This kit is the first one to make applying the highlights very simple and still ends up with amazing results. You can make your highlights however you prefer… Whether you like chunky highlights, or just face framing ones, or highlights throughout all your hair in thin strips. You can brush them on easily with the brush that is petite enough to give you great control or the finger brush which I prefer. You are able to easily see where you have already applied Highlights and then it's just a matter of time and rinse. This kit makes it so easy, I think even a beginner could master this and again, the results are salon worthymalinda.s
